Dodger infielder Nomar Garciaparra recently completed a full battery of of medical tests and doctors now believe his constant struggles with frequent calf pulls may be the result of unidentified blood-flow problems, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: Garciaparra, who sat out three weeks because of a strained left calf last summer, went on the disabled list April 26 with another strain in the same area. And while he doesn't consider the situation career-threatening, until doctors find the reason for the problem the six-time All-Star said they have no idea how to treat it.

Our View: Hardy has struggled to meet offensive needs, posting just seven RBIs through the month of May.
Randy Johnson, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/3, 10:21 PM CT
Arizona LHP Randy Johnson pushed himself into the second spot on the all-time strikeout leaders list this evening, but despite a strong effort from the mound, the offense failed to back his work and left him with the loss in a 7-1 fall against Milwaukee. Johnson pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, surrendering just one walk with eight strikeouts.

Our View: Johnson now carries a record of 4-2 on the season, and while he was a perfect 3-0 for the month of May, he is starting June on the wrong foot (though you have to like his 15 walks versus 64 strikeouts thus far).
Mark Reynolds, 3B, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/3, 10:15 PM CT
Arizona was struggling from the outset this evening, taking the 7-1 loss against the Milwaukee Brewers, but the finger of blame does not fall towards third baseman Mark Reynolds . Reynolds went 2-for-3 with a walk at the plate, the only Arizona batter with multiple hits, hitting his seventh double of the season to total one RBI on the night.

Kazuo Matsui, 2B, Houston AstrosTuesday 6/3, 9:55 PM CT
Houston put 10 hits on the Pirates this evening and needed each and every one of them pulling the 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Second baseman Kazuo Matsui led the way, going 4-for-4 (all singles) with two runs scored.

Our View: Matsui was caught stealing for the third time this season and his numbers have slipped a bit coming into tonight, hitting just .259 through the month of May. This may give the jolt needed to get back on track.
Phil Dumatrait, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 6/3, 9:51 PM CT
Pittsburgh LHP Phil Dumatrait pitched reasonably well for his Pirates this evening, but the end result was a 2-0 loss. Dumatrait pitched six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Chase Utley, 2B, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 6/3, 9:19 PM CT
Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley continues to work as a force of reckoning, going 2-for-3 this evening with a walk and his 17th double of the season as the Phillies put the Reds to bed, 3-2.

Our View: Utley totaled one RBI and one run scored as well, now sporting at least one RBI in each of his last eight games with at least one run scored in his last nine.
Jimmy Rollins, SS, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 6/3, 9:14 PM CT
The Phillies did plenty of hitting his evening but had to fight for the 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The man of the hour was leadoff man Jimmy Rollins , going 3-for-4 at the dish with his 15th double of the season and two stolen bases (now carrying 10 on the season) with a run scored.

Our View: Rollins is hitting well, posting a .298 batting average in May, and he continues to swipe bases with regularity (six of his 10 stolen bags coming in May).
Aaron Harang, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 6/3, 9:10 PM CT
Cincinnati RHP Aaron Harang suffered yet another troubling loss this evening as his Reds fell 3-2 to the Phillies. Harang went six innings to allow three runs (all earned) on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Reds have suffered the 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies this evening, though third baseman Edwin Encarnacion did what he could to get his team on track. Encarnacion went 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple (his first of the season) and his 10th home run of the season, totaling one RBI and two runs scored on the evening.

Our View: Encarnacion came through the month of May with just one home run and eight RBIs, but he now carries homers in each of his last two games, going 6-for-16 over his last four games.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/3, 9:01 PM CT
Milwaukee reliever Salomon Torres is reportedly making manager Ned Yost rethink what he may do when regular closer Eric Gagne returns from injury, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Torres has pitched well in his new role as the head of the closer-by-committee approach the Brewers are now employing, carrying a 2.62 ERA coming into Tuesday with saves converted in five of his last six opportunities. Monday night's game brought the bullpen's contribution front and center, as Guillermo Mota and Torres pitched two scoreless innings in a game that the Brewers won by just a run. Torres was hindered by two Brewers errors, but was able to escape trouble and close out the game.
Ryan Freel, CF, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 6/3, 8:51 PM CT
Cincinnati outfielder Ryan Freel has left tonight's game against the Phillies due to a leg injury, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Freel was running out a ground ball to short, but he fell to the ground two steps out of the batter's box and was grabbing his leg. Shortstop Jerry Hairston, Jr. was moved to center field as Paul Janish took over short. We will update with news as it comes forth.
Delwyn Young, LF, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 6/3, 8:48 PM CT
The Dodgers have given the start in right field tonight to Delwyn Young, sitting Andre Ethier on the bench, according to the LA Daily News.

Ryan Speier, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 6/3, 8:45 PM CT
The Rockies have activated RHP Ryan Speier from the disabled list, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Speier missed 20 games with a bruised right shoulder, and the club went 5-15 in his absence. Prior to his injury May 12, Speier was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 15 relief appearances and held opponents to a .262 batting average. To make room on the roster, Colorado has optioned RHP Alberto Arias to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Washington reliever Ryan Wagner , currently residing on the team's 60-day disabled list, has rejoined the team after a small stint in extended spring training, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: Wagner underwent major shoulder surgery 12 months ago, but his recovery is going well and the team hopes to put him through a simulated game on Thursday. From there, a potential rehab assignment could follow.
Randy Johnson, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/3, 8:02 PM CT
Arizona LHP Randy Johnson has taken sole possession of second place on baseball's career strikeout list, sending Mike Cameron back to the dugout in the first inning of tonight's game versus Milwaukee, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: It was Johnson's 4,673rd career strikeout, breaking a tie with Roger Clemens and leaving the Arizona Diamondbacks' veteran ace behind only Nolan Ryan, who had 5,714 strikeouts in his career. The 44-year-old hurler has 288 career victories, tying him with Tommy John for 24th in the big leagues and leaving him only 12 short of 300.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 6/3, 7:40 PM CT
St. Louis shortstop Brendan Ryan is dealing with neck and upper back soreness, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Cardinals have held Ryan out of the lineup this evening but feel he won't need time on the disabled list. Ryan reports he first felt the pain on Monday afternoon during pregame warm-ups, but the team is keeping him in mind should a pinch hitter be needed. On the field, Aaron Miles will get the start in his stead.
John Smoltz, P, Atlanta BravesTuesday 6/3, 7:29 PM CT
Atlanta RHP John Smoltz reports he is feeling "pretty sore" today, one day after returning from the DL to make relief appearance in the Braves 7-5 win over Florida, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The veteran right-hander, who on Monday began his second stint in the Braves' bullpen, allowed two runs on three hits and blew the save against the Marlins. It was the first time he had faced Major League hitters since April 27. The team reports his status moving forward will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis, but they are highly unlikely to pitch Smoltz on back-to-back days.
Mike Hampton, P, Atlanta BravesTuesday 6/3, 7:24 PM CT
Atlanta LHP Mike Hampton threw off a mound today, the first time he's tossed off the hill since the Braves removed him from the lineup before a planned start on April 3rd, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Hampton took part in a bullpen session today and reports he feels no immediate pain or discomfort as a result of the 25 pitches thrown. The hurler has been on the DL since April 3rd with a strained left pectoral muscle, but the team now believes he could return to the starting rotation before the July All-Star break.
Josh Willingham, LF, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/3, 7:17 PM CT
Florida outfielder Josh Willingham took 25 pain-free swings off a tee in the batting cage today, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is his second consecutive day swinging the stick and he reports no pain or discomfort. The team plans to have Willingham take 25 more swings tomorrow, this time against soft tosses. Willingham has been on the DL since May 2nd with a lower back strain and a herniated disc. If things go well tomorrow, the Marlins will repeat that exercise on Thursday, but plans after that have not revealed.
Kevin Hart, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/3, 7:04 PM CT
The Chicago Cubs have recalled RHP Kevin Hart from Triple-A Iowa, according to ChicagoSports.com.

Our View: Hart will be a part of the Cubbies' bullpen, a dire situation in need of healthy and strong arms. To make room for Hart, first baseman Micah Hoffpauir has been designated for assignment.
Scott Olsen, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/3, 6:44 PM CT
The Marlins have been concerned with Scott Olsen's lack of velocity in recent starts, but the lefty's velocity was better in Monday's start. He had been topping out at 85 lately, but Monday he was averaging 88 MPH and touched 92. "I felt good. My fastball was coming out pretty well," Olsen said on MLB.com. Olsen's slider was also much improved Monday after pitching coach Mark Wiley detected something in the southpaw's delivery before the game, which was corrected.

Our View: Olsen is off to a nice start this year despite a big drop in his strikeout rate. Keep an eye on those radar gun readings to make sure he doesn't go through another "dead arm" period.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsTuesday 6/3, 6:42 PM CT
The Mets reports catcher Brian Schneider will be out of the lineup tonight as New York faces San Francisco, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: He will be replaced by Ramon Castro, batting eighth in the order.
Luis Castillo, 2B, New York MetsTuesday 6/3, 6:39 PM CT
Still battling a hip flexor, Mets second baseman Luis Castillo will once again be out of the lineup this evening has New York faces off with San Francisco, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Castillo is still listed as day-to-day, but he has struggled with this same leg for most of the season. He will be replaced by Damion Easley, batting second in the order.
Scott Patterson, P, San Diego PadresTuesday 6/3, 5:25 PM CT
The Yankees optioned Scott Patterson to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Tuesday. He allowed a run on a hit and two walks over 1 1/3 innings in his lone appearance with the Yanks.

Our View: You shouldn't have Patterson on your roster, but feel free to cut him loose if you do.
Jason Wood, 1B, Florida MarlinsTuesday 6/3, 2:41 PM CT
Infielder Jason Wood is believed to be a strong candidate to be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque when the team decides to trim down from 13 pitchers to 12, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Wood made the opening day roster in 2007, but did not make the cut in 2008. He registered two at-bats (no hits) during a brief stint with the Marlins earlier this season.
Chris Volstad, P, Florida MarlinsTuesday 6/3, 2:36 PM CT
Prized pitching prospect Christopher Volstad has been placed on the seven-day DL at Double-A Carolina due to a right triceps strain, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The 21-year-old hurler is expected to miss one start for Carolina.
Alejandro De Aza, CF, Florida MarlinsTuesday 6/3, 2:32 PM CT
Alejandro De Aza has stopped running drills for seven days due to soreness to his left ankle sprain, according to MLB.com.

Our View: De Aza has been on the DL all season long, and he is still being bothered by his sprained ankle.
Lee Gardner, P, Florida MarlinsTuesday 6/3, 2:27 PM CT
Lee Gardner had a follow-up visit with Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, according to MLB.com. Gardner has right elbow inflammation as well as shoulder discomfort, and it is believed that Andrews is examining his shoulder.

Our View: Gardner fared well in 2007, but has not had the same success this season, as he allowed eight runs and 14 hits over 6.2 innings of work.
Jorge Campillo, P, Atlanta BravesTuesday 6/3, 2:23 PM CT
Jorge Campillo has appeared in 16 games this season, but will be making his fourth start tonight against Florida, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He holds a 2-0 record with a strong 0.99 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over 36.1 innings, with 33 strikeouts. He has displayed excellent control, evidenced by his five walks. He only allowed one run over five innings in his last start against Milwaukee, and is worth starting if you have him on your roster.
Burke Badenhop, P, Florida MarlinsTuesday 6/3, 2:17 PM CT
The Marlins have pushed Burke Badenhop's start back a few times, but he is now set to take the mound tonight against the Braves, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This will be his eighth major league start, and was roughed up by the Braves in his previous outing on April 24 as he surrendered six runs in five innings. Badenhop holds a 1-3 record with a 6.75 ERA and 1.56 WHIP, and should not be considered for your lineups.
Scott Munter, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 6/3, 2:11 PM CT
Scott Munter has been re-signed by the Giants and sent to Triple-A Fresno, according to Yahoo Sports.

Our View: He returns to the Giants following a stint within the Rays' farm system. He had a successful rookie season with the Giants back in 2005, but has been on the rebound ever since following shoulder surgery. He holds no fantasy value for 2008.
Kent Mercker, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 6/3, 1:44 PM CT
Kent Mercker has been placed on the 15-day DL due to chronic back pain, according to the AP. That was the second time this season he has been brought down by his back. The Reds purchased the contract of left-hander Danny Herrera from Triple-A Louisville to cover his spot on the roster.

Our View: Mercker held no fantasy value as a reliever, with a 3.29 ERA and 1.54 WHIP over 13.2 innings, with only six strikeouts.
John Smoltz, P, Atlanta BravesTuesday 6/3, 11:16 AM CT
John Smoltz blew his first save chance in his return to the bullpen on Monday, and Manager Bobby Cox stated that the closer's role with be split for the immediate future between Smoltz, Manny Acosta, and Rafael Soriano, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Our View: Smoltz could be the primary closer, but needs to prove he can still be effective in the role. Bobby Cox will play it by ear, but is pleased to have Smoltz back in action, despite his blown save.
Tim Hudson, P, Atlanta BravesTuesday 6/3, 10:55 AM CT
Tim Hudson still expects to make his next scheduled start Friday against the Phillies, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Hudson is nursing a strained left hamstring, and said, "I feel OK, just a little sore. It's nothing like when I had a pulled hamstring in the past. Just get some treatment, stay on top of it the next four days, ice it, and I should be able to pitch."

Our View: Manager Bobby Cox mentioned that the Braves may have a minor league pitcher on standby, just in case. More updates should come as Friday approaches.
Ryan Zimmerman, 3B, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/3, 10:47 AM CT
Ryan Zimmerman has officially been placed on the 15-day DL, according to the AP. He has been brought down by a small labral tear in his left shoulder. The team recalled infielder Kory Castro from Triple-A Columbus to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: The DL move is retroactive to May 26. It was believed that he could still play through the ailment following a cortisone shot, but that was not the case, as the team is playing it safe with their franchise third baseman. Aaron Boone will continue to cover third while he is out.
Conor Jackson, 1B, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/3, 10:11 AM CT
Conor Jackson, who is recovering from a quadriceps ailment, could return to the D-Backs' lineup as soon as Wednesday, according to the Arizona Republic. Jackson said, "It's hard to sit and watch. You want to go out and help the team. But on the flip side, you don't want to reinjure it and eventually go on the DL."

Our View: The team doesn't think a trip to the DL is necessary, but also noted that he could be held out until Friday, which would give Jackson an extra two days of rest because of Thursday's off day.
Carlos Muniz, P, New York MetsTuesday 6/3, 9:38 AM CT
As expected, Carlos Muniz has been sent down to Triple-A New Orleans, according to the MetsReport.com. The team needed to make room for Pedro Martinez, and Muniz was seen as expendable.

Our View: Muniz was nothing special as a reliever this season, as he allowed four runs on eight hits over seven innings, with four strikeouts. He held little fantasy value prior to his demotion.
Pedro Martinez, P, New York MetsTuesday 6/3, 9:36 AM CT
Pedro Martinez has been activated from the DL, and he will start tonight against the Giants, according to the MetsReport.com. Carlos Muniz was sent back to Triple-A New Orleans to make room on the roster for Pedro.

Our View: He hasn’t pitched since straining his hamstring on April 1st in Florida. You may want to wait to see how he fares in his first start back before considering him for your lineup, especially since he allowed four runs in 3.1 innings before landing on the DL.
Shawn Estes, P, San Diego PadresTuesday 6/3, 8:48 AM CT
Shawn Estes will avoid surgery on his broken left thumb, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Estes said, "Surgery would not speed things up. I've had a rough couple of days. This was something I was not mentally prepared for."

Our View: He is still expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and will start using a bone stimulation device Tuesday. Estes fared well this season as he went 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA and solid 1.15 WHIP over 24.1 innings.
Rafael Furcal, SS, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 6/3, 8:41 AM CT
Rafael Furcal commented on Monday that he is now in favor of going on a minor league rehab stint before returning from the DL, according to the LA Times. Furcal is now going to be patient with his rehab and said, "I want to go for three or four games (on rehab assignment). Play, see what happens. Because I don't want to start here and get hurt." Furcal is recovering from a lower back strain.

Our View: Furcal feels better and has more strength, but does not want to suffer another setback. In his absence, Dodgers' shortstops have gone 10 games without a hit (0-for-32).
Andruw Jones, CF, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 6/3, 8:33 AM CT
Andruw Jones hopes to return to action before the All-Star break, according to the LA Times. He was relieved that doctors did not find any additional issues during his arthroscopic knee surgery last week, and he said, "When the doctors told me that, it was a good feeling. Because I've always had problems with my patellar tendon. It feels better. The pain that I had in the back, there's not much soreness in there anymore."

Our View: Jones has resumed throwing on Monday, and is already rehabbing his leg with weights. Matt Kemp will continue to roam center field while Jones is on the shelf.
Bill Hall, 3B, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/3, 7:38 AM CT
Bill Hall reportedly wants out of Milwaukee, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Terry Bross (his agent) stated that it would be in the best interest of Hall and the Brewers to deal him to another team where he can play regularly.

Our View: Hall was irritated when the team called up Russell Branyan from Triple-A Nashville on May 24, reducing Hall to a platoon role at third base. Hall has nine homers over 185 at-bats, but holds a low .227 average. You cannot fault the Brewers for bringing in Branyan.
Angel Pagan, LF, New York MetsTuesday 6/3, 7:33 AM CT
Angel Pagan is still not close to returning to action, according to MetsBlog.com. He still cannot bat from the right side of the plate. He is slowly recovering from a left shoulder contusion.

Our View: Moises Alou is due back by the end of the week, meaning Nick Evans' stint with the club could end.
Erick Threets, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 6/3, 7:20 AM CT
Erick Threets has been activated from the DL, and designated for assignment by the Giants, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Giants have 10 days to trade Threets, waive him or send him back to the minors if he clears waivers. Other teams are said to be interested in him, but he has no fantasy value. He surrendered four runs on 11 hits over 10 innings this season, with nine walks.
Carlos Muniz, P, New York MetsTuesday 6/3, 7:03 AM CT
Carlos Muniz will be demoted to Triple-A to make room for Pedro Martinez on the Mets' roster, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Muniz was nothing special as a reliever this season, as he allowed four runs on eight hits over seven innings, with four strikeouts. He held little fantasy value.
Ray Durham, 2B, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/3, 12:29 AM CT
Ray Durham went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, and three RBI in Monday's win over the Mets.

Our View: Durham remains a shade of his former self, but the veteran second baseman did hit .313 in May. He's not a bad option if your fantasy team needs to fill an injury gap right now.
Kerry Wood, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/3, 12:26 AM CT
Kerry Wood picked up his 15th save of the season on Monday night after Carlos Marmol allowed the Padres to close the score to 7-6. The closer came in to record the final two outs.

Our View: Wood has been steadier than expected as the closer, but we hope the Cubs are watching his workload. The oft-injured hurler has taken the hill in six of the last eight games and in eight of the previous 11 contests.
Jonathan Sanchez, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 6/3, 12:21 AM CT
Jonathan Sanchez pitched well and got help from his teammates on Monday night. The southpaw held the Mets to six hits and two runs over seven innings. He also struck out eight. The Giants scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back. Sanchez improved to 4-3.

Our View: Sanchez has struck out 71 batters over 68.1 innings, and his move back to the rotation has gone pretty well outside of two disastrous, seven-run outings. His K numbers make him worth looking at even in deep mixed leagues.
Rich Harden, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/3, 12:16 AM CT
Rich Harden struck out eight Tigers over 6.2 innings on Monday night. He also allowed five hits and two runs and walked three. Harden was saddled with a no-decision.

Our View: Harden has now made it through five straight starts without suffering an injury (knock on wood). His digits continue to be wonderful, and he's once again proving he has the stuff to be a fantasy ace.
Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, San Diego PadresTuesday 6/3, 12:11 AM CT
Adrian Gonzalez didn't let Chase Utley take over the NL RBI lead for long. The Padres first baseman went 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs, and four RBI on Monday. His 54 runs batted in lead the NL.

Our View: Gonzalez is locked in right now and has 15 RBI over his last seven games. He tends to be a little streaky, but overall, Adrian is a solid fantasy first baseman.
Carlos Zambrano, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/3, 12:08 AM CT
Carlos Zambrano improved to 8-1 on Monday, although he didn't give his finest effort. The Cubs ace allowed five hits and three runs over five innings against the Padres. Zambrano threw only 51 of his 96 pitches for strikes, walked four batters, and struck out two.

Our View: You know things are going well for a pitcher when he struggles like CZ did on Monday yet still hangs in there and picks up a win. We can't help but worry a bit about his recent lack of control and low strikeout numbers, though.
