Ryan Church, RF, New York MetsSunday 5/18, 11:15 PM CT
Ryan Church scored another three runs on Sunday night and now has crossed home plate 34 times in 40 games played with the Mets. Church also knocked in two runs to up his total to 32 on the year thanks in part to his ninth home run of the season.

Our View: Church has been spectacular in the early going, and in fact, he has been the Mets most consistent bat all year long.
Jose Reyes, SS, New York MetsSunday 5/18, 11:13 PM CT
Jose Reyes is slowly starting to recapture his previous level of performance as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored on Sunday.

Our View: Reyes is still hitting just .267 and getting on base roughly a third of the time, a number that simply must increase to previous levels if Reyes is to ignite the Mets order, and it would be nice to see him run a bit more too since he has only two SB in his last 12 games.
Oliver Perez, P, New York MetsSunday 5/18, 11:08 PM CT
Oliver Perez gave the Mets a great outing on Sunday as he allowed just three hits, two walks and two runs over 7.2 innings in his fourth victory of the season.

Our View: Perez once against struggled at times with the strike one, but overall this was the type of performance that the Mets, and his fantasy owners, will take every time out.
Shawn Estes, P, San Diego PadresSunday 5/18, 11:01 PM CT
Shawn Estes held the Mariners to just a single earned run over 6.1 innings on Sunday in a no-decision.

Our View: With Mark Prior's return pushed back, Estes could be the Padres #5 starter for the foreseeable future after a second straight strong start. However, Estes just doesn't have the arsenal to keep this up, so be wary of counting on anything other than up and down performances.
Brian Giles, RF, San Diego PadresSunday 5/18, 10:58 PM CT
Brian Giles continued his hot hitting on Sunday with three more hits to give him a .307 average on the year. That makes 12 hits in his last four games.

Our View: Giles still isn't producing any runs, but his average and OBP (.400), are certainly top notch. The problem is that the team just hasn't been hitting leaving Giles stranded more often than not.
Mark Reynolds, 3B, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 5/18, 10:46 PM CT
Mired in a terrible slump, he was just 1-for-21 entering Sunday, Mark Reynolds went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Our View: Reynolds also stole his fifth base, and other than a poor .233 average, the rest of his batting line looks quite strong for an after thought in most mixed leagues (seven home runs, 28 RBI and 28 runs scored).
Chris Young, CF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 5/18, 10:42 PM CT
Chris Young knocked in three runs on Sunday and went 1-for-3 at the plate for the Diamondbacks.

Our View: Young continues to be a productive bat in the Mike Cameron mold as a low average, power hitting outfielder. What is missing now are the steals as he has only three on the year.
Randy Johnson, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 5/18, 10:38 PM CT
Randy Johnson had his best outing of the season on Sunday as he held the Tigers scoreless over seven innings to pick up his fourth win against a lone loss.

Our View: What set today's effort apart from others this season was the fact the he controlled the strike zone throwing 67 of 98 pitches for strikes and walking only one batter. RJ is proving that if physically right, he can still be a very solid major league pitcher.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 10:32 PM CT
Jose Castillo had two hits, two runs, and two RBI for the Giants on Sunday in his new spot in the order, second.

Our View: Castillo has only two home runs on the year, but one of his hits today was a double, his 15th of the year. Whether or not he remains in the two-hole is up in the air, but what is known is that he is swinging a hot bat with 11 hits in his last 23 AB (.478).
Brian Wilson, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/18, 10:21 PM CT
Pitching in a non-save situation, Brian Wilson looked awful on Sunday allowing four runs while getting just two outs as his ERA skyrocketed to 5.09.

Our View: So many closers fail to come up big when they aren't going for the save which leads to a simple question: aren't three outs, three outs, and if so, why do so many fireman simply start fires when there isn't a chance for a save?
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/18, 10:19 PM CT
Matt Cain had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings before it all came crashing down as he allowed six hits, including four home runs, on his was to permitting six runs to cross the plate on Sunday. Cain also struck out six batters in the no-decision.

Our View: Cain was gliding along until seemingly everyone on the White Sox started hitting home runs. For once Cain got run support but he was unable to capitalize on it.
Juan Pierre, LF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/18, 10:07 PM CT
Juan Pierre had a hit, a run and a SB from his customary leadoff spot for the Dodgers on Sunday.

Our View: Pierre is up to 16 SB and is clearly on pace for his customary 50 steals even though he has been in and out of the lineup so far this year. In a related note, Andruw Jones went 0-for-4 with three K and is hitting .167.
Derek Lowe, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/18, 10:05 PM CT
Derek Lowe had another poor outing on Sunday as he was tagged for seven runs in just five innings to lose to the Angels.

Our View: Lowe has now gone five starts without a victory, he has three loses in that time. Even worse, over those five games his ERA is a whopping 8.55. Find a spot on your bench for him until he straightens things out.
Rick Ankiel, CF, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/18, 9:37 PM CT
Rick Ankiel will not be placed on the DL due to his injured right shoulder as the team will give him a couple of days of rest instead, according to MLB.com. "He can't swing 100 percent when it's aggravated, so we're going to try to get him well," manager Tony La Russa said.

Our View: The good news is that it isn't his throwing shoulder, the bad news is that it's his lead arm on his swing. Look for the team to go with Chris Duncan, Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker until Ankiel returns, hopefully within about a weeks time.
John Smoltz, P, Atlanta BravesSunday 5/18, 9:34 PM CT
John Smoltz threw on Saturday but he was still uncertain how his shoulder was doing on Sunday and said he likely wouldn't know until he throws again, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Smoltz did say that he still has some discomfort in his shoulder, but he also stated that he felt he would be back within two weeks. Hopefully, that will be the case, but stay tuned for updates.
Lance Berkman, 1B, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 8:58 PM CT
Lance Berkman had two hits on Sunday to push his hitting streak to 17-games. He is currently batting .399 with 16 home runs on the year.

Our View: Berkman is off to such an amazing start that he appears to be making a run at the Triple Crown. Not bad for a guy who may not have even been a top-5 first baseman according to many heading into the season.
Miguel Tejada, SS, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 8:56 PM CT
Miguel Tejada had another three hits on Sunday while scoring two runs and knocking one in for the Astros.

Our View: Tejada hasn't hit a home run in 15 games, but how do you find fault with a shortstop who has 33 RBI, 34 runs and a .344 average?
Michael Bourn, CF, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 8:50 PM CT
Michael Bourn was re-inserted back into the leadoff spot on Sunday and he responded by picking up two hits in four AB to leave him with a .192 average. He was also caught stealing twice in the game.

Our View: So all it took was a couple of hits to get Bourn thrown back to the top of the order? Cecil Cooper might be a good guy, but this is a simply horrific decision. Bourn is one of the five worst everyday hitters in the game this year and his only value is in through the stolen base. It's almost criminal for a leadoff hitter on such a potent offense to have scored 18 runs in 41 games.
Brandon Backe, P, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 8:39 PM CT
Brandon Backe allowed no walks and just five hits over 6.1 innings to run his record to 3-5 on the year. Backe allowed two home runs that led the three runs he allowed.

Our View: Backe has made 10 starts, some middling, but he has allowed more than four runs just once giving the Astros a chance to win. He isn't great, but a healthy arm is producing some decent work.
Ryan Howard, 1B, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/18, 8:33 PM CT
Ryan Howard blasted his 10th home run of the season on Sunday for the Phillies, and with two hits he is now batting .191 on the year.

Our View: Of course, Howard still had a strikeout on the afternoon, but this was his fourth home run over the last eight games as his bat is slowly starting to heat up. Now might be the last chance to acquire him on the cheap.
Chase Utley, 2B, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/18, 8:27 PM CT
Chase Utley went 1-for-5 and is now four for his last 23 (.174) for the Phillies.

Our View: Utley is hitting .306 with 14 home runs, so its not like we are going to listen to anyone gripe about his past week. This is nothing more than a period of normalization, and Utley should start hitting the ball with authority again very soon.
Lastings Milledge, CF, Washington NationalsSunday 5/18, 6:08 PM CT
Lastings Milledge was drilled with a pitch the other night but he played on Sunday, albeit ineffectively, going 0-for-4.

Our View: Milledge is now hitting .234 with just a single home run in 158 AB. What happened to the 20/20 player we were supposed to see this year? He just hasn't shown up yet.
Cristian Guzman, SS, Washington NationalsSunday 5/18, 6:04 PM CT
Cristian Guzman hit his fourth home run of the season on Sunday on his way to two hits, a run and and RBI.

Our View: Guzman continues to hit at a near .300 clip while scoring a lot of runs, he has 30, but he no longer runs (two SB), and he certainly isn't a long ball threat, meaning he is a really nothing more than a depth player except in NL Only leagues.
Jon Rauch, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 5/18, 5:51 PM CT
Jon Rauch continues to post excellent numbers from the closers spot for the Nationals and he picked up his 10th save of the year on Sunday.

Our View: Rauch lowered his ERA to 2.49 and now has 19 K in 21.2 IP, numbers that haven't been seen out of a Nationals closer in a couple of years. Rauch is well on his way to being this years Kevin Gregg, or a pitcher that comes out of nowhere to post 30+ saves.
John Lannan, P, Washington NationalsSunday 5/18, 5:49 PM CT
Despite two rain delays, John Lannan was able to improve to 4-4 on the year as he held the Orioles to just one run on Sunday. Lannan allowed four hits and a walk leading to just one run over seven innings.

Our View: Through nine starts Lannan continues to defy the odds with a 3.86 ERA despite too many walks and a low strikeout rate. Chances are that the dam will spring a leak at some point, that is unless he is the new Tom Glavine.
Willy Taveras, CF, Colorado RockiesSunday 5/18, 5:37 PM CT
Willy Taveras didn't have a hit on Sunday, but he still managed to steal two bases and score a run for the Rockies.

Our View: Taveras is hitting only .234 with 18 SB, and the truth is that his barely .300 OBP means that the Rockies would actually be better served going with Scott Podsednik who is hitting .283 with a .387 OBP and six steals in just 53 AB.
Todd Helton, 1B, Colorado RockiesSunday 5/18, 5:33 PM CT
Todd Helton finally displayed some of the old pop on Sunday as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI for the Rockies.

Our View: Helton has been a major disappointment so far with only a .269 average and three home runs coming into Sunday, but he is just too good a hitter to continue to struggle like this. Keep that in mind if you need some help at first base as this is a good time to buy low on the all-star.
Jeff Francis, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 5/18, 5:22 PM CT
Jeff Francis picked up his first win of the season in his ninth start as he held the Twins to two runs over 6.1 innings. Francis allowed six hits and two walks while picking up seven strikeouts.

Our View: Now that's what you paid a mid-round selection for. Francis is likely on waivers in some mixed leagues due to his terrible work this year, and while one start does not make a man, he has looked a bit better of late if you remove his last start where he got bombed. If you need help, and he's available, you might give Francis a shot.
Chris Perez, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/18, 5:11 PM CT
Chris Perez picked up his first big league win on Sunday as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Rays.

Our View: Perez entered the game with the score tied 4-4, pitched his inning, and then watched the Red Birds score in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Franklin is clearly the top option in the pen at the moment, but Perez could be moving up the pecking order very quickly.
Kyle Lohse, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/18, 5:07 PM CT
Despite dealing with an injured shoulder, Kyle Lohse managed to have himself a nice game on Sunday as he limited the Rays to two earned runs over six innings. Lohse stuck out five and didn't walk a single batter.

Our View: A nice outing for those of you who left Lohse in the lineup today. Still, after allowing 19 earned runs in his last three starts prior to today, we hope that you had other options to turn to today despite the solid start.
Ryan Ludwick, RF, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/18, 5:03 PM CT
Ryan Ludwick did it again on Sunday as he stroked his 11th home run of the season for the Cardinals on Sunday.

Our View: With Rick Ankiel out of the lineup, Ludwick batted cleanup behind Albert Pujols. If it wasn't a certainly already, it appears that Ludwick will start no matter who is on the hill given his massive run of success, a position obviously strengthened in the short-term due to Ankiel's injury.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/18, 4:58 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva was hit hard yet again as the Red Sox piled up six runs, five earned, in four innings. Carlos fell to 2-5.

Our View: Villanueava has allowed five or more earned runs in three of his last four outings, and those might be Jeff Weaver's footsteps you hear in the background.
Ryan Braun, LF, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/18, 4:52 PM CT
Continuing his white hot hitting, Ryan Braun went deep twice on Sunday on his way to four RBI.

Our View: Just think, Braun was hitting .257 on May 9th before this run which has included eight home runs and a .363 batting average over his last eight games. So much for those early season struggles. The Brewers showed him the money, and Braun has shown opposing pitchers his bat.
Adam LaRoche, 1B, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 5/18, 4:33 PM CT
Adam LaRoche hit his fifth home run of the season leading to a three RBI day for the Pirates.

Our View: Here we go again. LaRoche, a notoriously slow starter, now has four home runs and 15 RBI in his last 17 games. Make a move to acquire him if he is still available.
Alfonso Soriano, LF, Chicago CubsSunday 5/18, 4:30 PM CT
Alfonso Soriano went 1-for-3 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to seven games during which time he has seven home runs, 14 RBI and a .516 average.

Our View: Who says that Lance Berkman is the hottest bat in the league? Soriano has used the last week to vault his numbers back to the top of the charts in the outfield after a very sluggish start to the season.
Kerry Wood, P, Chicago CubsSunday 5/18, 4:27 PM CT
Kerry Wood pushed his save total to 10 with a scoreless ninth inning that included two strikeouts.

Our View: Carlos Marmol rebounded from a rough outing to also hurl a scoreless inning to set up Wood. This duo is shaping up to be one of the better backends in the NL, and who would have thought that five weeks ago?
Phil Dumatrait, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 5/18, 4:25 PM CT
Phil Dumatrait made his fourth start of the season on Sunday and it didn't go well as he allowed four hits and seven walks over 4.2 IP. Dumatrait allowed four runs to fall to 1-2.

Our View: It's pretty amazing he allowed only four runs with seven walks allowed. With 25 BB and just 28 K, Phil is nothing more than a NL Only, back of the rotation arm.
Jason Marquis, P, Chicago CubsSunday 5/18, 4:23 PM CT
Jason Marquis improved to 2-3 on the year by holding the Pirates to two earned runs over six innings. Marquis allowed four hits and just one walk on the afternoon.

Our View: Marquis brought his ERA back below five (4.96), as he continues is his role as an innings eating back of the rotation arm with little fantasy upside.
Nomar Garciaparra, SS, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/18, 4:13 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is still experiencing trouble with his strained calf, and now more tests are being ordered since the leg has failed to respond as hoped, according to MLB.com. "It won't go away," manager Joe Torre said. "He tried to run and jog and it's still there. It's frustrating to him. We talked yesterday. He'll get it checked when we get home."

Our View: So much for Nomar playing some shortstop with Rafael Furcal out. With Nomar unable to get healthy, look for Blake DeWitt to continue to get most of the work at third base for the Dodgers.
Rafael Furcal, SS, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/18, 4:09 PM CT
Rafael Furcal, out with a sore back, hopes to come off the DL on Friday, according to MLB.com. Furcal will increase his baseball activities on Monday in hopes of joining the club by the end of the week.

Our View: Furcal is eligible to return on Wednesday, but the team will give him a couple of more days to get himself right.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSunday 5/18, 3:58 PM CT
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez picked up his team-leading seventh win of the season today, going six innings to allow just two runs (both earned) on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Today's performance brings Volquez to a record of 7-1 with an ERA of 1.33, going 3-1 for the month of May thus far with 14 walks and 29 strikeouts.
Adam Dunn, LF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 5/18, 3:54 PM CT
Cincinnati outfielder Adam Dunn slammed his 10th home run of the season today, going 2-for-3 overall in the Reds' 6-4 win over the Indians. Dunn added a walk to the stat line that includes just the one RBI from the homer.

Our View: Dunn now has a string of four consecutive games with a home run. Those are the only hits he has in that span.
Jo-Jo Reyes, P, Atlanta BravesSunday 5/18, 3:35 PM CT
Atlanta LHP Jo-Jo Reyes didn't last terribly wrong but his effort was good for the win as the Braves put the 5-2 hex on the Oakland Athletics. Reyes went five innings, giving up just two runs (both earned) on eight hits, touting two walks with six strikeouts on the day

Our View: Reyes surrendered his first home run on the season and now carries seven walks versus 17 strikeouts through four starts.
Yunel Escobar, SS, Atlanta BravesSunday 5/18, 3:31 PM CT
Atlanta lead-off man SS Yunel Escobar got the Braves off on the right foot today and the team followed his lead, taking the 5-2 win over the Oakland A's. Escobar went 3-for-4 at the plate, all singles, to gather two RBIs and one run scored.

Our View: Escobar's batting average had soared to .333 earlier this month, but a steady decline since (now 9-for-42) has brought it back down. We'll see if he can keep it above .300.
Burke Badenhop, P, Florida MarlinsSunday 5/18, 3:27 PM CT
Florida RHP Burke Badenhop struggled to find any feeling of comfort on the mound today, taking the 9-3 loss from the Kansas City Royals. Badenhop lasted just three innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits with one walk, one strikeout, and one home run allowed.

Our View: Badenhop has just one win this season with eight starts made, sporting 13 walks versus just 24 strikeouts.
Jeremy Hermida, RF, Florida MarlinsSunday 5/18, 3:20 PM CT
The Florida Marlins suffered a horrendous 9-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals today as outfielder Jeremy Hermida exemplified the struggles of the entire team. Hermida went 0-for-4 with two strike outs and a team-high four men left on base.

Our View: Hermida has struggled mightily for an eye at the plate, now touting 33 strikeouts versus just nine walks since April 1.
Austin Kearns, RF, Washington NationalsSunday 5/18, 2:55 PM CT
The Washington Nationals have withheld outfielder Austin Kearns from today's matchup against Baltimore, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Manager Manny Acta had listed Kearns in the starting lineup in the team's locker room at 10:20 ET today, but he was removed 30 minutes later. Acta failed to address the change with reporters, but it appears to those on hand that Kearns may be suffered from a right elbow injury. That's all we know for now, and we will update if news comes forth.
Roy Oswalt, P, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 2:50 PM CT
Updating a report from earlier today, the Houston Astros are now listing RHP Roy Oswalt as a man suffering from a hip injury and are attempt to determine if he will be held from his next scheduled start, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Earlier today we reported an apparent disagreement in which Oswalt claimed he felt he had suffered some kind of groin injury and wanted to come out after the sixth inning, but coaches urged him back to the mound in the seventh after which he called for his own medical attention from the mound after just five pitches. Oswalt told reporters today he is unsure if he will be able to pitch in his next scheduled start on Thursday against Philadelphia.
Jake Peavy, P, San Diego PadresSunday 5/18, 2:33 PM CT
The San Diego Padres report RHP Jake Peavy will miss his next scheduled start on Monday, hampered by soreness in his pitching elbow, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Peavy reports the discomfort has been there for some time but he failed to report to the team due to his desire to pitch through the pain. He has lost three of his last four decisions and lasted just four innings in his last outing against the Cubs on Wednesday. The team reports Peavy will undergo an MRI on Monday once the team returns to San Diego. LHP Will Ledezma is slated to fill the start on Monday against St. Louis.
Jorge Campillo, P, Atlanta BravesSunday 5/18, 2:20 PM CT
The Atlanta Braves have announced RHP Jorge Campillo will be given the start in the second game of doubleheader against the Mets on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Campillo has been working out of the bullpen but will now get his first start since August 2nd of the 2005 season (then with the Seattle Mariners). It was the only start of his major league career and he lasted just one inning, removed with a right elbow injury. The was placed on the disables list the next day and then hit the hospital for Tommy John elbow ligament transplant surgery shortly after. Now the Braves are turning him loose against RHP Claudio Vargas, making his second start of th season for the Mets.
Shawn Hill, P, Washington NationalsSunday 5/18, 2:13 PM CT
Washington manager Manny Acta has told reporters RHP Shawn Hill is likely to be withheld from his next scheduled start against Philadelphia on Wednesday due to soreness in his right elbow, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Hill pitched on Friday against Baltimore and experienced discomfort the following morning. He had a cortisone shot and fluid was removed from the elbow as a result. The good news: The pain is not in the area of elbow reconstruction, a surgery performed in 2004. Acta wants to be cautious with the hurler for the time being as the Nats will re-evaluate later in the week.
Rich Hill, P, Chicago CubsSunday 5/18, 2:08 PM CT
The Chicago Cubs report LHP Rich Hill is not likely to be a contributor for the team's pitching staff any time soon, according to MLB.com. Manager Lou Piniella has noted the team current has three potential major-league arms in the minors and that Hill is the farthest from a move to the majors.

Our View: Hill left his last start on Friday with back stiffness after surrendering three runs over 2 2/3 innings, walking three in what has become a continued struggle to find control. Hill is now 1-2 in minor league action this season, touting an ERA of 3.38.
Brandon Moss, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 5/18, 1:28 PM CT
Boston outfielder Brandon Moss has been cleared to return to action following emergency appendectomy, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Moss underwent surgery for the emergency condition on May 3rd. He will play in extended spring training on Monday and Tuesday and will then begin a rehab assignment in the minors later this week, if all goes well during these early outings. We will update as news on Moss' return to the majors is released.
Rick Ankiel, CF, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/18, 1:23 PM CT
St. Louis outfielder Rick Ankiel will miss his second consecutive game today due to an ailing left shoulder, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Team physician Dr. George Paletta had indicated hopes to see Ankiel return after a short rest, giving the Cardinals support in avoiding the 15-day disabled list for Ankiel. The pitcher-turned-outfielder took an awkward swing on Friday night, according to manager Tony LaRussa, and tweaked the shoulder. He is batting .285 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs over 40 games this season. Skip Schumaker will get the start in his stead.
Jacque Jones, LF, Florida MarlinsSunday 5/18, 12:57 PM CT
Reports indicate free-agent outfielder Jacque Jones is close to signing with the Florida Marlins, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Negotiations between the Marlins and Damon Lapa, Jones' agent, are in "advanced discussions" according to the MLB report. Jones was released by Detroit and would give the Marlins a much-needed veteran presence to compete for time in center field.
Tony Gwynn, CF, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/18, 12:36 PM CT
The Milwaukee Brewers have announced Tony Gwynn will fill the role of DH today as the team faces the Boston Red Sox, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: Gwynn was activated from the disabled list in late April after suffering hamstring problems. Since then, he has seen spot duty, mostly in relief of outfielder Mike Cameron. Today he'll get his shot to shine at the plate. He will bat ninth behind catcher Jason Kendall.
Daryle Ward, LF, Chicago CubsSunday 5/18, 12:07 PM CT
The Chicago Cubs have placed infielder Daryle Ward on the 15-day disabled list today, listing a bulging disc in his lower back as the reason for the move, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Ward is batting just .200 with one home run and six RBIs over 30 games for the Cubbies this season. To replace Ward on the roster, the Cubs have recalled Micah Hoffpauir from Triple-A Iowa.
Jack Wilson, SS, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 5/18, 12:03 PM CT
Pittsburgh shortstop Jack Wilson , battling to return from an injured calf, will move his rehab effort from Triple-A Indianapolis to Double-A Altoona, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: The team asserts Wilson is likely to stay in Altoona until Wednesday, hoping to bring him back to the majors later in the week. He has been out since April 3rd and the team failed to address why they were moving him down a level before the move back to the majors.
Hunter Pence, RF, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 11:59 AM CT
Houston outfielder Hunter Pence has extended his current hit streak to 15 games, going 1-for-4 in the Astros' 6-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday.

Our View: During that span, Pence has gone 21-for-60 with three home runs, 14 RBIs, and 11 runs scored. He has also added four stolen bases and raised his batting average from .250 to .284.
Aaron Boone, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 5/18, 11:52 AM CT
Veteran infielder Aaron Boone is enjoying his new-found status as the starting first baseman for the Washington Nationals, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Our View: Boone has a six-game hit streak riding into today's series closer with Baltimore, going 6-for-14 over that span with four RBIs and 16 total bases. Boone is working in place of injured Nick Johnson, nursing an injured wrist.
Jimmy Rollins, SS, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/18, 11:33 AM CT
Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins went 3-for-5 in the Phillies' 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays, giving him his fourth consecutive game with two or more hits.

Our View: During that span, Rollins has gone 9-for-18 with four RBIs, four runs scored, and three stolen bases.
Lance Berkman, 1B, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 11:29 AM CT
Houston 1B Lance Berkman is riding what now sits as a 16-game hitting streak, going 2-for-3 in last night's 6-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

Our View: That's 15 games in May and one in April enveloped with hits for the power-hitting first bagger. Berkman has gone 34-for-61 during that span, smacking eight home runs with 21 RBIs. His average before the streak: .297. His average now: .399.
Scott Schoeneweis, P, New York MetsSunday 5/18, 9:28 AM CT
While reports from earlier in the week indicate Mets LHP Scott Schoeneweis is doing well following what doctors believe may have been a bout with inflammation in his appendix, the hurler failed to make an appearance for New York as expected on Saturday, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: The team is expected to keep Schoeneweis listed as day-to-day on the disabled reports, but he could be activated at any time. If/when such news comes, we will update.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/18, 9:19 AM CT
Dodgers RHP Jason Schmidt made the second start of his rehab assignment for Class A Inland Empire on Saturday and the team reports worries with his lack of velocity, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: Schmidt, attempting to return from right should surgery, faced nine batters, striking out three and walking one. However, the team reports he failed to get a single pitch above 90 mph during the outing, but Schmidt was happy with the results. "The velocity is something the media focuses on," said Schmidt. "I'm just trying to get the ball over home plate. I was pitching to contact and hoping the ball didn't go over the fence." We shouldn't be expect progress in leaps and bounds for Schmidt at this point, and that lack of velocity is not surprising in the least. It has been a long road to recovery for Schmidt and the Dodgers have given every indication they have no desire to push him to change the cautious approach.
Roy Oswalt, P, Houston AstrosSunday 5/18, 8:08 AM CT
Houston RHP Roy Oswalt walked off the mound following the sixth inning on Saturday night, 105 pitches into his start and claiming a distinct point of concern in his groin. Oswalt describes it as a "twinge," but more importantly, he spoke of pitching coach Dewey Robinson's instance that he return to the mound in the seventh, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Oswalt told reporters he was more than clear that he felt he might need attention from the trainer and was done, but Robinson had other plans. "I told them I thought that was it," said Oswalt. "They wanted me to go one more." That led to manager Cecil Cooper telling reporters, "He just said he thought he could go back out for the seventh." In the end, Oswalt returned to the mound, threw five pitches, and then summoned medical staff himself and went limping off the mound. We will update with news of his injury as it comes.
