Hideki Matsui, DH, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 11:10 PM CT
Hideki Matsui had the Yankees only two RBI on Sunday night thanks to his sixth home run of the season.

Our View: Tonight's home run was a majestic blast for Matsui who has been more of a small ball type hitter for most of the first quarter of the season. He sure turned on that high fastball tonight and blasted it into the night though.
Chien-Ming Wang, P, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 11:06 PM CT
Chien-Ming Wang hung around long enough to have a tough night as the Mets were able to get to him for seven runs in 7.2 innings of work. Wang walked three and had only one K on the night.

Our View: This was one of those nights were a couple of the ground balls he induced just found the holes. Still, tonights reversal of his K/BB ratio is a sign that needs to be monitored going forward. After this outing, his ERA rests at a more reasonable 3.51.
Felix Hernandez, P, Seattle MarinersSunday 5/18, 11:04 PM CT
Felix Hernandez earned a no-decision on Sunday despite limiting the Padres to two runs over six innings. He walked one, struck out five and was only scored on when Adrian Gonzalez touched him for a 2-run home run.

Our View: King Felix dealt with some calf cramps on the afternoon, but it didn't seem to affect him adversely. At this point, we would expect him to make his next start against the Yankees.
Ichiro Suzuki, RF, Seattle MarinersSunday 5/18, 10:56 PM CT
Ichiro Suzuki stole two bases on Sunday to become the Mariners all-time leader in swipes. He also had a hit and scored a run.

Our View: Ichiro is hitting a very un-Ichiro .280 through 45 games, but given the fact that he has stolen 20 bases already it really doesn't matter for the moment. Ichiro hasn't stolen 50 bases since his rookie season of 2001, but he is easily on pace to surpass that mark this year.
Jose Lopez, 2B, Seattle MarinersSunday 5/18, 10:53 PM CT
Jose Lopez had three RBI on Sunday to push his season total to 24 from the second base position for the Mariners.

Our View: Lopez, who hit third today, is batting .307 on the year and has done a great job putting the bat on the ball with only 11 K. However, he swings at everything as evidenced by his five walks, so he will likely need to improve that eye if he wants to keep his average around the .300 mark.
Miguel Cabrera, 1B, Detroit TigersSunday 5/18, 10:50 PM CT
Miguel Cabrera continues to limp along at a snails pace for him as he went 1-for-4 on Sunday to drop his average to .270.

Our View: So much for the vaunted Tigers attack. You know things are going bad when one of the best hitters in baseball is barely performing at a replacement level. Target Cabrera and see if you can convince his owner to move him your way.
Nate Robertson, P, Detroit TigersSunday 5/18, 10:41 PM CT
Nate Robertson allowed 11 baserunners over 5.2 innings in his fifth loss of the season on Sunday. Robertson struck out five but balanced out that positive with four walks.

Our View: Is there a more average pitcher in baseball who gets a regular turn in the rotation? The only team that Nate should be on are those in AL Only leagues and even in that situation you need to be smart and spot start him in good matchups.
Carlos Quentin, LF, Chicago White SoxSunday 5/18, 10:35 PM CT
Carlos Quentin had another in a long line of strong outings on Sunday as he blasted a deep home run on a 2-for-5 day.

Our View: Quentin looks like a monster at the plate this season almost as if his body is now possessed by someone other than the slug we saw on the field last year with the D'backs.
Orlando Cabrera, SS, Chicago White SoxSunday 5/18, 10:29 PM CT
Orlando Cabrera went deep twice on Sunday from the leadoff spot as he accrued two runs and three RBI against the Giants.

Our View: Cabrera entered the game hitting just .220, and with today's outing he doubled his home run total. Cabrera is likely due an extended hot streak given his anemic performance so far, perhaps today will be the springboard for that effort.
John Danks, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 5/18, 10:26 PM CT
John Danks wasn't involved in the decision on Sunday but he still had a quality start as the Giants got to him for only three runs over six innings. Danks allowed six hits, three walks and struck out three.

Our View: This was the first time in seven starts that Danks allowed more than two earned runs, and amazing run of consistency for a pitcher who had a 5.50 ERA last season. As good as he has been so far, Danks will likely regress when a few more of those flyballs leave the yard, unless he can continue to throw strikes and limit his walks.
Jered Weaver, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 5/18, 10:02 PM CT
Jered Weaver held his brothers old team, the Dodgers, to two runs over 5.1 innings on Sunday. Weaver earned his third victory in the game thanks in part to seven strikeouts.

Our View: Weaver has now allowed just two earned runs over his last 12.2 innings after getting shelled for eight runs against the Royals in his previous start. He appears to be fully healthy, so if he can just stay that way, his ERA should continue to tumble.
Torii Hunter, CF, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 5/18, 9:59 PM CT
Torii Hunter had another solid day of the Angels on Sunday with two hits, two RBI and a run scored against cross town rivals, the Dodgers.

Our View: Hunter continues to be an enigma at the plate as he is hitting .292 though he has only one home run since April 8th, a span of 35 games.
Mike Napoli, C, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 5/18, 9:53 PM CT
Mike Napoli went deep twice for the Angels on Sunday as he pushed five runners across the plate for the Angels.

Our View: Who cares if Naploli is hitting .258 when the big fella has 10 bombs and 23 RBI on the season in just 89 AB. Think what kind of damage he could do with 450 AB.
Jorge Posada, C, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 9:22 PM CT
Jorge Posada caught his first bullpen session on Sunday in his attempt to come back from an injured shoulder, according to MLB.com. Posada also made a series of throws from 90 feet.

Our View: There is still no target date for Posada, but considering how much time he has missed, one would be safe to assume that he will have to spend some time in the minors regaining his stroke.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 5/18, 9:18 PM CT
Steve Trachsel, who has had his last two starts skipped as the result of multiple off days, knows he will start one of the team's two games against the Rays this weekend, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: This news means Trachsel will have gone at least two weeks between starts, but that's what happens when you are one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball. Do yourself a favor, and dump Trachsel if he is still is on your squad because he isn't likely to do anything but help your competition by sinking your teams ratios.
Brandon Boggs, LF, Texas RangersSunday 5/18, 8:42 PM CT
Brandon Boggs went 0-for-4 on Sunday to drop his average to .246, this after it was at .385 after his first 39 AB.

Our View: Boggs has only two hits in his last 30 AB and one would have to think he is in danger of losing playing time or possibly being sent back to the minors if he doesn't snap out of this funk, and pronto.
Milton Bradley, DH, Texas RangersSunday 5/18, 8:36 PM CT
Milton Bradley had only one hit on Sunday but it was his eighth home run of the season for the Rangers.

Our View: Bradly has been producing runs at a feverish clip of late with five home runs in his last nine games leading to 11 RBI. As long as he can stay healthy and avoid blowing his stack, he could be on his way to the all-star game.
B.J. Ryan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 5/18, 8:31 PM CT
B.J. Ryan allowed a home run to Pat Burrell but that didn't stop him from converting his 9th save of the season for the Jays. This was the first run allowed by Ryan in 14 innings.

Our View: It wasn't pretty, but he got the job done for the ninth straight time to start the year.
Roy Halladay, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 5/18, 8:23 PM CT
Roy Halladay came out of the bullpen for his first relief effort since July 22, 2001 as he pitched 2.1 innings in a game delayed by rain. Halladay was his typical dominating self allowing just one hit with no walks.

Our View: The ultimate teammate, this outing will likely cause the Jays to move back Halladay's next start, previously scheduled for Tuesday, until Saturday.
Shaun Marcum, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 5/18, 8:20 PM CT
Shaun Marcum allowed two runs in a single inning of action on a Ryan Howard home run in a game that was delayed because of rain. All three outs he recorded were by the strikeout.

Our View: There are already rumors swirling that Marcum could start on Tuesday for the Jays given the fact that he threw only 22 pitches on this day which would put him in line to start twice on the week.
Lyle Overbay, 1B, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 5/18, 8:19 PM CT
Lyle Overbay had a pinch hit, three run homer for the Jays to lead the squad to a 6-5 victory over the Phillies.

Our View: Overbay hasn't been able to find much consistency this season, a year after he was derailed by injury. Overbay is getting on base at over a .370 clip, but he has only two home runs and 10 extra base hits in 45 games, scant production for a corner infielder.
Jeff Clement, C, Seattle MarinersSunday 5/18, 7:47 PM CT
Jeff Clement was sent back to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday after batting .167 with 20 K in 48 AB for the Mariners, according to MLB.com. "That's probably the most disappointing thing, is that I didn't just stick to what had made me successful before," said Clement.

Our View: The Mariners will likely turn to power-hitting stud Jose Vidro to fill the DH role for the time being. Oh yeah, Vidro is hitting .207 with two home runs in 116 AB. Is that type of production worthy of a starting spot over one of the team's best young hitters?
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/18, 7:39 PM CT
Jake Westbrook had a decent start on Sunday for Single-A Lake County as he held the Lexington Legends to one run over 3.1 innings, according to Minor League Baseball.com. Westbrook permitted three hits and a walk while striking out four.

Our View: Westbrook is hopeful of returning by the end of the month, and this outing is a good step toward making that hope a reality.
Matt Harrison, P, Texas RangersSunday 5/18, 6:18 PM CT
Matt Harrison, one of the players that came to Texas in the Mark Teixeira trade, tossed a seven inning complete game no-hitter for Double-A Frisco.

Our View: Harrison walked an amazing total of six batters but held San Antonio without a hit to run his record to 3-1 with a 3.15 ERA.
Fernando Rodney, P, Detroit TigersSunday 5/18, 6:15 PM CT
Like fellow injured hurler Joel Zumaya, Fernando Rodney has been cleared to throw batting practice on his way back from shoulder tendinitis, according to MLB.com. "They won't go out for rehab until they're absolutely, 100 percent ready," manager Jim Leyland said. "When you do that, the clock starts ticking. I have no idea when that's going to be."

Our View: The Tigers will welcome back Rodney with open arms when he is ready, but as you just read, we don't really have a time line as to when that might happen.
Joel Zumaya, P, Detroit TigersSunday 5/18, 6:13 PM CT
Joel Zumaya, coming off of shoulder surgery, has progressed to the point that he will throw batting practice early in the coming week, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Zumaya is still a long way away from contributing in Detroit, but he continues to progress quicker than expected and appears to be on pace to be a substantial contributor in the second half of the season.
Adam Jones, CF, Baltimore OriolesSunday 5/18, 6:00 PM CT
Adam Jones went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Orioles on Sunday in their 2-1 loss to the Nationals.

Our View: Jones has failed, miserably, to perform at anywhere near the level that was hoped for this year (.241-2-11-14-4). Still he has played solid defense and the team is committed to him, so don't look for him to be removed from the lineup anytime soon.
Nick Markakis, RF, Baltimore OriolesSunday 5/18, 5:57 PM CT
Nick Markakis had an 0-for-4 day on Sunday and in the process his batting average dipped to just .260.

Our View: Through roughly a quarter of the season Markakis is right on pace with the power numbers (30-100), though his average is lagging behind. Still, he is working the count and getting on base with a near .400 OBP, so look for the hits to start falling soon.
Jeremy Guthrie, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 5/18, 5:54 PM CT
Jeremy Guthrie lost to the Nationals on Sunday though he pitched extremely well holding the opposition to just one run over seven innings.

Our View: Guthrie allowed just a solo home run to Christian Guzman, and in fact he allowed just eight base runners on the afternoon.
Justin Morneau, 1B, Minnesota TwinsSunday 5/18, 5:44 PM CT
Justin Morneau went deep for his eight home run, and he had two RBI against the Rockies on Sunday.

Our View: Morneau continues to be just about the only long ball threat in the Twins lineup as Delmon Young, Michael Cuddyer and Joe Mauer have a combined total of one home run. How is that possible?
Delmon Young, LF, Minnesota TwinsSunday 5/18, 5:41 PM CT
Delmon Young had two hits on Sunday and now has seven hits over his last three games to push his average to .287.

Our View: Young has been a terrible disappointment this season going 164 AB without a single home run, so unless he pushes that average up to .350, he better start jacking some long balls.
Kevin Slowey, P, Minnesota TwinsSunday 5/18, 5:29 PM CT
Kevin Slowey fell to 0-4 as he lost his fourth start of the year on Sunday. Slowey didn't pitch badly as he allowed seven hits and one walk over 5.2 innings, but he was victimized by two long balls.

Our View: Slowey has now allowed six home runs in just 19.2 innings, which is why his ERA is high (5.49), despite a strong WHIP (1.17). He should remain a low end starting option until the Twins have their full compliment of starting pitchers.
Ben Zobrist, SS, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 5/18, 5:18 PM CT
Ben Zobrist had two hits, scored a run, and stole his first base of the season for the Rays from the shortstop position.

Our View: Jason Bartlett and Akinori Iwamura seem entrenched in the lineup up the middle, but Zobrist should get enough work here and there to have some value in deep AL Only leagues.
Dioner Navarro, C, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 5/18, 5:17 PM CT
Dioner Navarro went 1-for-4 on Sunday and finished the game with a .368 batting average.

Our View: Admit it, you hadn't realized he was hitting that well did you? Navarro hit .355 in 31 AB in April and is now hitting .346 in 52 AB in May. He may offer little in the power categories, but there may not be a better number two catcher to roll with right now.
Edwin Jackson, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 5/18, 5:13 PM CT
Edwin Jackson struggled all afternoon walking four and allowing six hits in 5.1 innings, but he limited the Cardinals to just one earned run in a no-decision.

Our View: Jackson picked up seven strikeouts on the day despite all the base runners, and continues to be an effective hurler despite some uneven game-to-game performances.
Josh Beckett, P, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/18, 4:56 PM CT
Josh Beckett picked up his fifth win of the season on Sunday despite allowing six runs in seven innings against the Brewers. Beckett had nine strikeouts but allowed four home runs.

Our View: Beckett has been dogged by home runs in the past, so today's effort was a bit troubling. Through eight starts Beckett owns a 4.67 ERA which speaks to his inconsistent performance thus far.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/18, 4:48 PM CT
Dustin Pedroia is now hitting .307 thanks to a 3-for-4 day on Sunday. Pedroia also scored three runs with two RBI against the Brewers.

Our View: Pedroia has been basically the same hitter he was last year, which marks him as a great middle infield play for those of you looking for runs and batting average.
Kevin Youkilis, 1B, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/18, 4:45 PM CT
Kevin Youkilis hit his ninth home run of the season on Sunday and he went 3-for-5 and is now hitting .329.

Our View: Youkilis continues to be an amazing mid-round bargain this year as his totals stack up against almost all first basemen in baseball (.329-9-33). Don't count on a 30 homer season for Youkilis, but he just might knock in 100 runs.
David Ortiz, DH, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/18, 4:43 PM CT
David Ortiz hit two home runs and knocked in four runs for the Red Sox on Sunday.

Our View: Ortiz has pushed his average up to .250 after a terrible start, one that is not reflected in his power numbers (10 home runs, 37 RBI). Ortiz is clearly back to being one of the top run producers in the game.
Cliff Lee, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/18, 3:50 PM CT
Cleveland LHP Cliff Lee suffered his first loss of the season, lasting just 5 2/3 innings to surrender six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, walking one and striking out two.

Our View: Lee surrendered two homers on the day, but that accounted for just three of those earned runs. The rest were spread out in what easily ranks as Lee's worst performance to date.
Victor Martinez, C, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/18, 3:45 PM CT
The Cleveland Indians wasted an opportunity today, taking the 6-4 loss from the Cincinnati Reds. No one will feel worse than catcher Victor Martinez , going 1-for-5 with two strikeouts and five runners left on base.

Our View: Martinez came into the month on a hot streak but has since fallen, going just 10-for-43 coming into today with nine strikeouts and five walks. He failed to improve any of those numbers today.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 3:38 PM CT
Oakland RHP Justin Duchscherer suffered through one of his worst outings on the season today as the A's fell 5-2 against the Atlanta Braves. Duchscherer lasted just five innings, surrendering three runs (all earned) on seven hits with two walks and two stikeouts.

Our View: That's consecutive losses for Duchscherer after going 3-1 through is first four.
Zack Greinke, P, Kansas City RoyalsSunday 5/18, 3:23 PM CT
Kansas City RHP Zack Greinke picked up his fifth win of the season today as the Royals enjoyed great offense, taking the 9-3 win over the Florida Marlins. Greinke went six innings to surrender three runs (all earned) on nine hits, walking just one and striking out five.

Our View: Greinke now carries an ERA of 2.18 and is working as one o the more reliable pitchers in the AL.
Jose Guillen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsSunday 5/18, 3:16 PM CT
The Kansas City Royals put a whooping on the Florida Marlins today, 9-3, and outfielder Jose Guillen was the man with his finger on the trigger of the effort. Guillen went 2-for-4 at the dish, hitting his 16th double of the season as well as his fifth homer of the campaign, posting four total RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View: Guillen now carries a ten-game hit streak forward, going 19-for-38 along the way.
Mark Teahen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsSunday 5/18, 3:15 PM CT
Royals outfielder Mark Teahen enjoyed a strong day at the plate in support of Kansas City's 9-3 win over Florida. Teahen went 1-for-4 with walk and his second home run of the season, good for two RBIs as well as a stolen base (his first) and two runs scored on the day.

Our View: Teahen is holding steady at the .268 mark for batting average, a number he has not gotten far from (positively or negatively) since the start of the season.
Josh Hamilton, CF, Texas RangersSunday 5/18, 2:41 PM CT
Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton is out of the lineup today as the Rangers do battle with the Houston Astros.

Our View: Hamilton was pulled from last night's game with "general soreness." Hamilton told reporters he was sore after attempting a diving catch in which he landed awkwardly on his shoulder and right hip. He asked manager Ron Washington to move him to right field, but Washington felt it best to give him a rest. There is no expectation of prolonged absence, but we will update as news comes forth.
Santiago Casilla, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 2:29 PM CT
The Oakland A's report RHP Santiago Casilla is recovering nicely but the team still has no timetable for his return, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Casilla went to the DL on Friday after soreness in his right elbow led to worries. Casillas threw just one pitch against the Cleveland Indians that day, hit for a home run by shortstop Jhonny Peralta. An MRI failed to reveal any extensive or concerning damage in the elbow, and while Casilla reports no pain in the arm, the A's are being cautious in bringing him back to action. The team reports they will be putting Casilla through further investigation upon their return to Oakland on Monday.
Octavio Dotel, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 5/18, 1:37 PM CT
White Sox reliever Octavio Dotel has turned up the heat in recent outings, posting at least one strikeout in 17 of his last 18 appearances.

Our View: Dotel struck out the only batter he faced in Saturday's 301 win over San Francisco and has been giving the White Sox reliable middle relief over recent weeks. He now carries a record of 2-2 with an ERA of 3.06, touting 27 strikeouts versus nine walks, allowing 11 runs on 16 hits over 17 2/3 innings of work.
Jonathan Van Every, CF, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/18, 1:32 PM CT
Boston has optioned outfielder Jonathan Van Every to Triple-A Pawtucket, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: To fill the spot on the roster, the Sox have purchased the contract of RHP Chris Smith from Pawtucket. Smith is going to add depth to a bullpen that is getting regular work as the Boston starting rotation struggles for health and reliability.
Michael Aubrey, 1B, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/18, 1:15 PM CT
Cleveland manager Eric Wedge stated he had every intention of giving Michael Aubrey , the team's first-round draft pick (11th overall) from 2003, starts in the majors this season. Today, that promise will come to fruition as Aubrey is slated to make the start at first base against the Cincinnati Reds, according the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Aubrey got into Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Reds in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement, moving Casey Blake to third. He nearly tagged his first major league hit but was robbed by a fine defensive effort from Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips. The team is expected to send Aubrey back to the minors if closer Joe Borowski is activated later this week, but until then, it appears Wedge will give the young prospect his opportunity to shine.
Matt Holliday, LF, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 12:50 PM CT
Rumors are swirling that indicate the Cleveland Indians have contacted the Colorado Rockies with interest in trading for outfielder Matt Holliday , third baseman Garrett Atkins, and/or relief pitcher Brian Fuentes, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View: The bulk of the speculation revolves around three key facts. (1) Holliday is reportedly seeking a new eight-year contract in the neighborhood of $152 million. Cleveland is a team that might be able to come up with such numbers, and the Rockies are most certainly not. (2) Colorado general manager Dan O'Dowd has worked in the Cleveland organization and has close ties with the personnel for the Indians that could facilitate such discussions and keep it quiet. (3) Cleveland is in need of a strong right-handed bat, preferably to fill a spot in the corner outfield. Atkins would also work as the Indians have a need for an offensive infielder. As of today, it is speculation... but it makes a ton of sense for both teams and could prove worthy of heavy consideration.
Hank Blalock, 3B, Texas RangersSunday 5/18, 12:42 PM CT
The Rangers intend to bring Hank Blalock back from the disabled list this week and now indicate that he will be used as the team's full-time first baseman, according to the Star Telegram.

Our View: Blalock came to the team to volunteer for the job according to the Telegram, having done so after watching the team's recent struggles. He has already begun working on the position and will continue to do so in extended spring training. Normally playing at third, Blalock believes the team will benefit from him being on the first bag. We'll see how he progresses as the return from the DL looms, hoping to come back later this week.
Alex Rodriguez, 3B, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 12:32 PM CT
New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is looking at Tuesday as the date of return to action, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Rodriguez has been out since April 28th with a strained right quad and is doing well in his work to get healthy. The team reports he hit a grand slam to center field in a simulated game that brought him 15 at-bats. He is scheduled to play in an extended spring training game on Monday against minor leaguers from Philadelphia. If that goes well, he'll be back on the field later this week.
Joey Gathright, CF, Kansas City RoyalsSunday 5/18, 12:14 PM CT
Kansas City outfielder Joey Gathright will be out of the starting lineup for the Royals today after suffering an ugly collision with fellow outfielder David DeJesus, according to MLB.com.

Our View: DeJesus was coming from right field as he chased a fly ball from Florida's Mike Jacobs. DeJesus leaped to make the catch only to find Gathright in the path to the ball, meeting in mid-air. Gathright's left shoulder popped out and then back in during the play and is being held out as a precautionary measure. He will be available to play on Sunday, though the team indicates they will re-evaluate. DeJesus reports he is fine and will be in the lineup today.
Justin Masterson, P, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/18, 11:45 AM CT
The Boston Red Sox have announced starters for coming days, a list that includes recent minor-league call-up RHP Justin Masterson and recently-returned from rehab RHP Bartolo Colon, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Masterson was called up on Tuesday, having been sent back down for more seasoning in late April, and will make the start versus Kansas City's Gil Meche. The team reports they are likely to send him back down to the minors after that start is completed. For Colon, this will be his first major league start of the season, having spent time in minor league rehab to overcome a strained oblique.
Jose Guillen, RF, Kansas City RoyalsSunday 5/18, 11:24 AM CT
Kansas City outfielder Jose Guillen extended his hit streak to nine games on Saturday, going 1-for-4 with a two-run double as the Royals fell to the Marlins 7-3.

Our View: During this span, Guillen has gone 17-for-34 with five runs scored and 11 RBIs, a stretch of success that has raised his batting average from .185 to .239.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 10:48 AM CT
Oakland RHP Justin Duchscherer gets the start for the Athletics today as they battle to catch the LA Angels, just one half-game ahead of the A's for first place in the AL West, facing the Atlanta Braves.

Our View: Duchscherer has lost his only career start versus Atlanta and is coming off a disappointing loss to Cleveland, having surrendered just one run on four hits with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings against the Tribe. Dutchy is 3-2 overall this season, touting an impressive 2.20 ERA with 24 strikeouts versus just seven walks.
Nate Robertson, P, Detroit TigersSunday 5/18, 10:40 AM CT
Detroit LHP Nate Robertson will hit the mound for the Tigers today and hopes to get his season back on track as the Tigers visit the best team in the majors, the 27-16 Arizona Diamondbacks.

Our View: Robertson is 16 games below .500 for his career coming in (43-59) and has just one victory over his five decisions this season. Four of his last five outings (and six of his last eight) have resulted in losses. In his last outing against Kansas City, Robertson gave up just two runs over seven innings despite surrendering 10 hits.
Chien-Ming Wang, P, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 10:34 AM CT
The Yankees will look to RHP Chien-Ming Wang to push them away from the sweep as they face the crosstown rival New York Mets today at Yankee Stadium.

Our View: Wang is 6-1 with a 2.90 ERA but received no runs of support in his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays as he gave up one run on seven hits over seven innings. He has faced the Mets once and emerged victorious, surrendering just two runs on six hits over 8 2/3 innings.
Roger Clemens, P, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 10:22 AM CT
Reports indicate as many as 104 major league baseball players have been subpoenaed by federal investigators in connection with the BALCO steroid distribution case following the release of positive steroid tests from the league taken during the 2003 season to the United States attorney's office, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: According to ESPN, an anonymous source has told the New York Times that the federal government plans to question all of the players connected with a study performed by the league in 2003 in which steroid tests were held but results where held as confidential. The government was originally held from obtaining those results, but this source now states legal maneuvering has allowed the government to obtain positive test results from numerous players as well as facts about what these players tested positive for and what substances were found in their urine samples. This is sure to lead to questions about particular players, potential suspensions, and further unrest for a league already under duress from the government and fans. We will update with news on all of this as it becomes available.
Matt Holliday, LF, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 9:34 AM CT
Having missed time over the week due to a lower back ailment, Colorado OF Matt Holliday made his return on Saturday as the Rockies took a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Our View: Holliday went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored, carrying a batting average of .340 this month. He has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.
Dontrelle Willis, P, Detroit TigersSunday 5/18, 9:14 AM CT
Detroit LHP Dontrelle Willis has made marked improvement during his rehab stint in the minors, but the team is reportedly concerned about his struggles for control, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: Willis made his third start with Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, allowing just one run over six innings, but he walked four batters and scared another with a wild pitch that went behind the back of the man in the box. Willis ended with four strikeouts and that seems to indicate he is on schedule. It's not like Willis hasn't been wild in the past.
Cliff Lee, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/18, 9:08 AM CT
More than a few eyes will be on the afternoon battle that brings the Cleveland Indians and LHP Cliff Lee to Great American Ball Park to face the Cincinnati Reds and RHP Edinson Volquez.

Our View: Lee enters with an amazing record of 6-0 and an equally impressive 0.67 ERA while Volquez sits at 6-1 with a 1.12 ERA. Lee lacked the offensive support to be the first Cleveland pitcher in 86 years to win his first seven starts of the season and left with no decision despite pitching nine shutout innings. He carries a 3-1 record with an ERA of 5.60 against the Reds over his career.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 9:02 AM CT
Yankees manager Joe Girardi has told reporters that RHP Joba Chamberlain's transition to the starting rotation may be over, at least for 2007, according to the New York Post.

Our View: The Post turned to general manager Brian Cashman for confirmation but he passed on comment. Instead, Girardi folded, stating when asked about the future development of the current pride of the Yankees pitching staff and if he would stay in the bullpen, "It's possible, yes." This is a noteworthy change from the line the Yankees have put forth on Chamberlain up to this point and further adds intrigue to the pitching rotation in New York. If more news on this story comes forth, we will update.
