Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 3/16, 8:13 PM CT
Brian Moehler gave up three earned runs on six hits over three innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He had no walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler struggled tonight, and needs to bounce back in his next outing to stay in the race for a spot at the bottom of the Astros' rotation. Also, the 38-year-old hurler would just be an option for NL-only leagues as a starter this season.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 10/7, 8:40 AM CT
The Astros have informed Brian Moehler they plan "to pick up their portion of the mutual option they hold on the right-hander for 2010," according to the Houston Chronicle. The option pays him $3 million.

Our View: The chances of Moehler declining his part of the option are basically zero. The market for soon-to-be 38 year olds coming off 5.47 ERA seasons receiving major league contracts is understandably thin. He will be an Astro next year.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 10/5, 5:48 PM CT
Brian Moehler underwent surgery on his right knee, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The veteran hurler missed 18 games in April and May due to a sprained right knee. The Astros expect him to be ready to go for the start of the 2010 campaign, barring a setback.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 9/30, 9:57 PM CT
Brian Moehler got hit hard again on Wednesday, this time allowing seven runs in 4.1 innings, as the Astros lost 10-3 in Philadelphia.

Our View: Assuming Wednesday was Moehler's final start of the season, it capped a very inglorious year for the aging righty. He will finish with a record of 8-12 in 29 starts, while sporting an ERA of 5.47. He threw just eight quality starts all season.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 9/25, 10:51 PM CT
Brian Moehler was lit up for seven earned runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings in Friday's 10-4 loss to the Reds at Minute Maid Park. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler fell to 8-11 following his nightmarish outing. The 37-year-old hurler is winless over his last six starts.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 9/19, 10:30 PM CT
Brian Moehler allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks over six innings on Saturday, but did not earn a decision as the Astros bullpen crumbled against the Brewers in a 7-2 loss.

Our View: Moehler has turned his season around a bit as of late and has compiled a 2.74 ERA in four starts this month. Too little, too late, but it's nice to see him finally figuring things out. The downside is that he hasn't been credited with a win since August 22nd.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 9/15, 10:25 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Brian Moehler will undergo offseason knee surgery.

Our View: Moehler's knee has been bothering him all season and he says he just wants to get it "cleaned out". Hopefully the procedure helps him improve on an 8-10 record and 5.01 ERA.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 9/12, 9:09 PM CT
Brian Moehler turned in his first quality start since July 31 on Saturday (a span of seven starts), but still took a no-decision, as Houston beat the Pirates 4-2.

Our View: At age 37, Moehler has had the look of a pitcher nearing the end of the line this season. This first quality start since July might be his last ever.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 9/7, 4:40 PM CT
Brian Moehler gave up three earned runs on five hits over 5.2 innings in Monday's 4-3 win over the Phillies at Minute Maid Park. He had three walks and three strikeouts, and allowed two homers.

Our View: The Phillies were leading 3-2 when Moehler exited, so he was handed a no-decision. The 37-year-old hurler is not pitching bad right now, as he allowed three or less earned runs in each of his last five starts.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 9/1, 10:30 PM CT
Brian Moehler was good, not great on Tuesday. He allowed three runs (just one earned) on six hits over 5.1 innings, but was handed his tenth loss of the season as the Astros fell to the Cubs 4-1.

Our View: Moehler didn't walk a man in Tuesday's game, but only managed two strikeouts. He's not known for the Ks though, as he has just 11 in his last five starts combined.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosThursday 8/27, 4:11 PM CT
Brian Moehler kept the suddenly light-hitting Cardinals in check on Thursday, allowing only three runs in six innings, as the Astros won 4-3 in St. Louis to prevent a three-game sweep.

Our View: Thursday also marked his fifth straight non-quality start, however, and his 5.26 ERA and 1.51 WHIP preclude him from being much of a factor in any format.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 8/22, 9:54 PM CT
Brian Moehler broke his losing streak on Saturday as the Astros beat the Diamondbacks 4-2. Moehler went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three.

Our View: Moehler had been really struggling as of late, but he was much better tonight, albeit against a weak D-Backs' lineup. Moehler is now 8-9 on the season, and he has a 5.29 ERA. He should not be employed for any fantasy duty unless your league is extremely deep.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 8/15, 9:08 PM CT
Brian Moehler gave up three earned runs on 10 hits over five innings in Saturday's 6-2 loss at Milwaukee. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler was dealt a loss, and falls to 7-9 with a 5.40 ERA. He has taken a loss in each of his last three starts, and should only be used in deeper fantasy leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 8/10, 9:19 PM CT
Brian Moehler was tagged for four earned runs on five hits over five innings in Monday's 8-6 loss at Florida. He had three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler had another poor outing, and now has a losing record at 7-8. He has three losses over his last four starts, and gave up 10 earned runs over his last two. He is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 8/5, 4:38 PM CT
Brian Moehler got rocked on Wednesday, allowing seven runs in six innings, as Houston lost to the Giants 10-6 at home.

Our View: Looks like the bad Brian showed up on Wednesday. Moehler has been both quietly efficient and breathtakingly awful this season, and there's never any telling what might happen when he pitches. It's this quality that doesn't make him a great fantasy spot-starter.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 7/31, 10:26 PM CT
Brian Moehler gave up two earned runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings in Friday's 4-3 loss at St. Louis. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View: The game was tied 2-2 when Moehler exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision rather than a loss. He carries a 4.99 ERA for the season, and is merely an option for NL-only leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSunday 7/26, 4:55 PM CT
Brian Moehler got roughed up on Sunday, allowing five earned runs in just 4.2 innings, as the Astros lost to the Mets 8-3 at home.

Our View: Moehler failed to go his customary six innings for the first time since June 25. He's not a miracle worker, but he's consistent. You can usually count on six innings, four or five K's and a 50/50 chance that he'll bring home a win when you trot him out there.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 7/20, 9:47 PM CT
Brian Moehler allowed two earned runs on six hits over 6.1 innings in Monday's 3-2 win over St. Louis at Minute Maid Park. He issued two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler pitched well tonight, and improves to 7-5 for the season. He has earned a win in three of four starts in July, and the veteran hurler is worth penciling into fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Astros' rotation.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSunday 7/12, 6:43 PM CT
Brian Moehler tossed a gem on Sunday. The crafty veteran scattered seven hits over 6.1 shutout innings to earn the victory in the Astros' 5-0 blanking of the Nationals. He walked two and fanned two.

Our View: Moehler was horrific at the beginning of the season, but has strung together six consecutive solid starts and has earned himself some recent fantasy consideration. Especially in NL-only leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/7, 10:45 PM CT
Brian Moehler took his fifth loss of the season on Tuesday, just one start after his best game of the year, as the Astros lost 6-3 to the Pirates in Houston.

Our View: Moehler is capable of throwing gems like he did his last time out, but is far too inconsistent to warrant serious consideration in most formats.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 7/1, 11:53 PM CT
Brian Moehler had his best outing since May 28 on Wednesday, striking out eight in six innings to earn his fifth win as Houston decked San Diego 7-1.

Our View: Moehler has very little fantasy value, and is an emergency spot starter at best.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosThursday 6/25, 4:18 PM CT
Brian Moehler went five innings for a no-decision on Thursday as Houston beat Kansas City 6-5.

Our View: He allowed four runs, but only one was earned. He is still sporting a 6.05 ERA, though, and is not a good option at starting pitcher.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 6/20, 10:22 PM CT
Brian Moehler picked up his fourth win on Saturday as the Astros defeated the Twins 6-5. Moehler went six innings and allowed three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three.

Our View: Moehler was pretty good tonight, but he still has very little fantasy value. NL-only leaguers may want to give him a look, but only if you are desperate for starting pitching. If not, avoid him.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 6/10, 12:24 AM CT
Brian Moehler was lit up for five earned runs on eight hits over a mere three innings of work in Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Cubs at Minute Maid Park. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler falls to 2-4 for the season, and has allowed nine earned runs over his last two outings. He is not fit for fantasy duty right now.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 5/29, 9:35 PM CT
Brian Moehler was excellent on Friday as he went the distance and allowed just one run on seven hits and two walks. He moved up to 2-3 on the season and struck out four in Astros' 6-1 win over the Pirates.

Our View: Moehler has been brutal this season. This is just his second quality start and despite a brilliant effort on Friday he's not worth holding on to in fantasy leagues. His ERA dropped to 6.43.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 5/23, 7:19 PM CT
Brian Moehler got rocked by the Rangers on Saturday, giving up six runs off nine hits, three of which left the yard, and zero walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Our View: Moehler had been solid in his previous three starts, but reminded us all that he's never been anything more than mediocre throughout his career. There's little to no fantasy value in his arm.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 5/15, 1:40 PM CT
Friday's game between the Astros and Cubs at Wrigley Field has been postponed due to rain, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: The game has been rescheduled for July 30. Brian Moehler was going to pitch for Houston today, but will now be pushed back to Sunday so Roy Oswalt can start on schedule Saturday.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 5/9, 11:16 PM CT
Brian Moehler had a rare strong outing on Saturday as he held the Padres to just one run on five hits and a walk, but did not factor in the decision. He struck out six as the Astros won 5-4.

Our View: Moehler's start lowered, that's right, lowered his ERA to 8.44. He's been drug off the scrap heap one too many times and isn't worth keeping around on fantasy rosters.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 5/4, 11:59 PM CT
Brian Moehler was pretty good in his return to the Astros' rotation on Monday, going five innings and allowing two earned runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out five. Moehler had been out with a knee injury, but was activated before the game.

Our View: Moehler has been bad all season, so this outing was a bit of a surprise. He wasn't outstanding, but it was a marked improvement over his other starts this year. He still has no fantasy value, but a few more starts like this may change that.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/29, 11:15 PM CT
Brian Moehler (knee) was clobbered in his second rehab start on Wednesday, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in five innings for Double-A Corpus Christi.

Our View: The team lost to Midland 16-9, so perhaps Moehler can blame it on the weather. Still, Moehler looks like he may have more work to do before returning to Houston's roster.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 4/27, 8:17 AM CT
Brian Moehler (knee) threw a successful bullpen session Sunday, and he is on track for his second rehab start (with Double-A Corpus Christi) Wednesday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Moehler is aiming to throw 100 pitches, after throwing 77 on Sunday. He is eligible to come off the DL April 29.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 4/25, 7:21 PM CT
MLB.com reports that starter Brian Moehler will likely need only one more rehab start before rejoining the Astros rotation. He felt good during and after a 77-pitch performance on Saturday. He is recovering from a strained knee that will cause him to wear a knee brace for the rest of the season.

Our View: Moehler does not have much fantasy value at all. He has allowed 12 runs in his first two starts covering four innings of work.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 4/24, 8:03 AM CT
Brian Moehler, who is recovering from a strained right knee, will make a rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock Friday, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "As long as I feel good, that is all I care about. I could care less about the results."

Our View: Moehler will attempt to reach a 75-85 pitch count. He is not sure if he will require another rehab start. He will throw with a brace on his ailing knee.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/22, 9:01 AM CT
Brian Moehler threw a light bullpen session Tuesday to test his sprained right knee, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: The veteran with throw a full bullpen session today, and could progress to a rehab assignment if he fares fine.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 4/20, 8:50 AM CT
The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Brian Moehler will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday for the first time since being placed on the DL with a sprained right knee. If all goes well, Moehler will throw another bullpen session before going on a rehab assignment.

Our View: Moehler is making progress, but he is expected to be stretched out during his rehab stint since he hasn't lasted longer than 2.1 innings in either of his starts this season. If all goes perfectly, he could be ready to pitch the day he is eligible to come off the DL.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/15, 6:39 PM CT
Updating a previous report, the Astros will place starting pitcher Brian Moehler on the 15-day DL, according to MLB.com. An MRI showed a grade one MCL strain in his right knee.

Our View: This may not be such a bad thing for the Astros. Moehler has allowed 12 runs in just four innings this season, and it's hard to imagine that whoever replaces him could do any worse.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/15, 8:24 AM CT
Brian Moehler may miss Sunday's scheduled start due to his knee injury, according to the Houston Chronicle. GM Ed Wade said, "From what I understand, it does not bother him going up and down stairs or running straight ahead, but if it bothers him pushing off he really cannot pitch effectively as witnessed by his lack of command Monday. We will see how he feels today. If he misses a start, we hope it is one."

Our View: The Astros did not comment on who may take his spot in the rotation if Moehler is foced to miss his next start. He is 0-2 over his first two outings.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 4/14, 2:44 PM CT
Brian Moehler is day-to-day while recovering from a mildly sprained MCL, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Moehler is tentatively scheduled to pitch again Sunday. He was rocked for 12 earned runs over a mere four innings of work over two starts this season.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 4/13, 6:28 PM CT
Following his poor outing Monday, MLB.com reports that Brian Moehler will have an MRI on his knee on Tuesday. He apparently suffered a knee sprain on the same day he suffered his second loss in as many starts.

Our View: Moehler will not be missed in fantasy circles, but the Astros are already desperate for starting pitching. He is currently 0-2 with a 27.00 ERA.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 4/13, 3:57 PM CT
Brian Moehler continued to struggle on Monday as he lasted only 2.1 innings in his start against the Pirates. He gave up seven hits and five earned runs and didn't strike out a batter in the Astros' loss. He was lifted after a knee injury in the third.

Our View: Moehler has been nothing short of abysmal in his two starts this season, as he hasn't made it out of the third inning in either. He is getting an MRI on his knee on Tuesday, so stay tuned to the results.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 4/13, 7:50 AM CT
Brian Moehler will make his second start of the season today at Pittsburgh (3-3), according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Moehler was rocked for seven earned runs in his season debut against the Cubs, and will be aiming to bounce back today and snap a four-game losing streak for Houston. He holds a 5.84 ERA over 14 career games (11 starts) against Pittsburgh.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/8, 11:57 PM CT
Brian Moehler got absolutely clobbered by the Cubs on Wednesday. He allowed seven runs on eight hits and a walk over just 1.2 innings. He is now 0-1 on the season.

Our View: Moehler is a risky fantasy start, and Wednesday's performance shows why. Avoid him this season unless you like flirting with disaster.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 4/3, 8:43 AM CT
Brian Moehler will start tonight's exhibition game against the Indians, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: He is 0-2 in spring action, but holds a solid 1.80 ERA. Moehler won't be a viable source for strikeouts, but could still be useful for deeper NL-only leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSunday 3/29, 4:08 PM CT
Brian Moehler threw six innings Sunday against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Our View: The veteran righthander, along with Roy Oswald, will provide the Astros' rotation with some quality leadership, but his lack of above-average stuff means he won't be worth a great deal of fantasy value.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSunday 3/29, 8:46 AM CT
Brian Moehler is slated to start today's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Moehler was forced out of last Sunday's start with a shoulder bruise. The 37-year-old vet is projected to be the fourth starter in the Astros' rotation this season. He only fired 82 strikeouts over 150 innings in 2008, and should be left for deeper NL-only leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 3/25, 7:36 AM CT
Brian Moehler, who has been recovering from a right shoulder contusion, will start Sunday's Grapefruit League game, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "I feel fine. I am not sore or anything."

Our View: He expects to make two more starts in spring training. If he remains on regular rest, the 37-year-old vet will be the No. 4 starter in the Astros' rotation.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 3/24, 8:16 AM CT
Brian Moehler is feeling better while recovering from a right shoulder contusion, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "I feel pretty good. It is a little discolored, but I am not in pain. I feel I will be ready to pitch later in the week."

Our View: Moehler does not expect the ailment to cost him any playing time. The 37-year-old should hold a spot in the Astros' rotation, and is worth a look for NL-only leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSunday 3/22, 3:18 PM CT
Brian Moehler pitched three scoreless innings against Washington on Sunday in a 1-0 Houston win.

Our View: It seems more and more likely that the 37-year-old Moehler will land a spot in the rotation. It will be interesting to see if manager Cecil Cooper will extend him beyond four or five innings in his final one or two spring starts.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 3/17, 4:11 PM CT
Brian Moehler had a fine outing on Tuesday against the Tigers. He allowed four hits and a walk over five scoreless innings and struck out three.

Our View: This could be a big boost for Moehler and the pitching-starved Astros. A couple more outings like this and he could crack the rotation. Still he has little value outside of NL-only leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 3/10, 3:40 PM CT
Brian Moehler allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits over four innings in Tuesday's 7-4 loss to the Braves in the Grapefruit League, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler continues to struggle in spring training, and is not guaranteed a spot in the Astros' rotation. He is only worth considering for deeper NL-only leagues, namely due to a low strikeout-rate.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 9/15, 11:41 AM CT
Journeyman Brian Moehler (11-6, 4.16) is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in six starts versus Chicago and 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in three this season. Moehler has been either good or bad this year. There has been little in between. In his 18 starts since the beginning of June he has allowed one or fewer earned runs eight times -- and four or more runs eight times.

Our View: Moehler depends on his early inning success. He's only a two-pitch pitcher that is much more suited for a long relief role.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 9/10, 10:37 PM CT
Brian Moehler improved to 11-6 on Wednesday night as he held the Pirates to just two runs in six innings of work. Moehler didn't strike out a batter but he also didn't walk one while allowing just five hits.

Our View: Moehler is 6-2 since the All-Star break as he continues to do his best Livan Hernandez impersonation, that is back when he was good an not the batting practice pitcher that batters fatten their batting average on now. Moehler allows a lot of hits, almost 10 per nine innings, and he barely strikes out five per nine, so there are bound to be some ups an downs along the way.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 8/30, 9:50 PM CT
Brian Moehler gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Saturday's 8-5 win over the Cardinals, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View: The 36-year-old hurler, who just signed an extension with the club, improves to 10-5 for the season, and is 5-1 since the All-Star break.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 8/29, 8:44 PM CT
Brian Moehler has received a contract extension and will make $2.3 million plus bonuses, and his deal also includes a mutual option for 2010, according to the AP.

Our View: The 36-year-old hurler is 9-5 with a 3.99 ERA over 25 games (20 starts) for the Astros this season, and is 4-1 since the All-Star break.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 8/19, 10:20 PM CT
Houston RHP Brian Moehler wasn't especially dominant tonight, but he put the Brewers in a loss with an efficient outing off the mounth. Moehler pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (only one earned) on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler has been strong, now standing at 3-0 in four starts through August. The one walk surrendered tonight is his first since July 29th, also giving up just one homer along that same span.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSaturday 8/9, 9:54 PM CT
Astros RHP Brian Moehler was once again working as a force of reckoning for Houston this evening, supporting his team's 3-1 win over the Reds with a strong performance off the mound. Moehler pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Moehler moves to 8-4 on the season, touting four wins over his last six starts with three consecutive wins heading forward. In his last three starts, he's allowed a combined total of three earned runs over 20 2/3 innings.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/29, 9:46 PM CT
Brian Moehler got 26 outs, leaving him one shy of a complete game, as the Astros took down the Reds 6-2. Moehler went 8.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Our View: Moehler has been alternating good and bad performances his last few times out, so be wary of what may happen his next time out.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 7/23, 5:15 PM CT
Brian Moehler let in six runs, five earned, in just 2.1 innings against the Pirates on Wednesday.

Our View: Moehler has a 6.33 ERA over his last five outings during which time he has eight walks and 12 K in 21.1 IP. Numbers like that are best left on waivers.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSunday 7/13, 10:46 PM CT
The Astros team website reports that right-hander Brian Moehler will receive the first start after the All Star break. "Obviously, we all want Roy starting that game, because he's the ace of the staff," Moehler said. "It's just unfortunate that he's injured right now." Moehler will be followed in the rotation by Wandy Rodriguez and Brandon Backe in a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs. After the series with the Cubs the rotation is a question mark. The fourth spot will likely go to Runelvys Hernandez, who would be called up from Triple-A Round Rock. Oswalt could be ready to start Tuesday, the fifth spot in the rotation after the break, but that won't be known until next weekend. "He won't do any throwing until after the break," manager Cecil Cooper said. "There's no need."

Our View: Cooper said that Moehler's season has been a success by every measurement. That's true to a degree, but after the fifth inning Moehler's peripherals are horrible making him a better option out of the bullpen.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/8, 10:12 AM CT
Brian Moehler was dealing with a case of pink eye on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Moehler said, "I woke up with it Sunday, and my wife knew right away it was pink eye. My kids get it a lot. Everybody just has to wash their hands a lot."

Our View: It should not keep him out of action long, and he should not be in jeopardy of missing his next start.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosFriday 7/4, 9:41 PM CT
Brian Moehler surrendered five earned runs on six hits over six innings in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Braves in Atlanta, with three walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Tonight's loss snaps a streak of three-straight starts in which he only allowed one earned run. He is still worth consideration for the bottom half of your rotation in NL-only leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosSunday 6/29, 5:33 PM CT
Brian Moehler went pitch-for-pitch with Josh Beckett on Sunday afternoon. The veteran held the Red Sox to one run over 5.2 innings. Moehler allowed seven hits, walked three, and struck out five. He earned a no-decision, but the Astros eventually won 3-2.

Our View: Okay, so Moehler didn't last as long as Beckett, but it was a nice outing nonetheless. Moehler has allowed only one run in each of his last three starts and is worth trusting in NL-only formats. We're not ready to use him in mixed leagues.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosWednesday 6/18, 9:35 PM CT
Brian Moehler was good on Wednesday night in Baltimore. After allowing seven runs on seven hits in his last outing against the Brewers, the right-handed journeyman working 6.1 innings allowing one run on five hits, walking two and striking out four in a no-decision.

Our View: Moehler was not expected to be in the starting rotation when the Astros broke spring training, and the veteran is much better serving in long relief. The longer Moehler is in the game the more dramatically his batting average against climbs.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosTuesday 5/27, 6:33 PM CT
Brian Moehler has retained his spot in the starting rotation with four strong starts (2-1, 3.43 ERA, 1.33 WHIP in 21 innings). Chris Sampson will be demoted to the bullpen when Wandy Rodriguez is activated from the DL. "I'm not going to sit here and lie to you and say I'm not happy, because I am," Moehler said. "At the same time, I told Coop I'd be happy to relieve as well. My goal is to help get this team in the playoffs. This is my 11th year and I haven't experienced that yet."

Our View: Moehler should be avoided in all leagues despite his strong showing of late. His track record shows he simply won't keep it up.
Brian Moehler, P, Houston AstrosMonday 5/19, 9:43 PM CT
Brian Moehler needed 95 pitches to hold the Cubs to three runs over five innings as he fell to 1-1 on the year.

Our View: Moehler continues to allow a boatload of hits, 31 in just 22.2 IP, and with just 11 K in that time it's clear that he needs exquisite control to do any better than he did on this night.

Houston RHP Brian Moehler lasted just five innings in giving up three runs (all earned) on eight hits, walking none and striking out two.

Our View: His Astros got the 6-3 win, cut the offense failed to emerge when Moehler was on the mound, thus he suffers the no decision.

Brian Moehler will get another start. He will work Wednesday against the Giants after tossing five scoreless innings versus the Dodgers on Friday. "I think he earned the right to do that," manager Cecil Cooper tells the Houston Chronicle. "He earned that opportunity."

Our View: Moehler is simply filling in the rotation due to injuries, and we have no reason to think the 36-year-old right-hander has turned into a reliable option.

Brian Moehler pitched five scoreless innings helping the Houston Astros to a 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. The 36-year-old Moehler, filling in for the injured Wandy Rodriguez, allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five.

Our View: He has spent the majority of his big league career as a starter, though has been used exclusively in relief since rejoining the club in January 2007. His fantasy value is minimal, even in NL-only formats.

Houston RHP Brian Moehler completed his second simulated game today as he prepares to return to the mound as the Astros' starting pitcher on Friday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Moehler is scheduled to replace Wandy Rodriguez in the rotation while the Houston lefty continues his effort to rehab from a groin injury, a start that will mark Moehler's first since September of 2006. Moehler also completed a simulated outing on Saturday, though Moehler has seen just five opportunities to pitch in league games this season. The team expects Rodriguez to miss at least two starts beyond Friday.

Long reliever Brian Moehler threw a simulated game on Saturday and is preparing for the possibility of making a spot start in place of the injured Wandy Rodriguez, according to the Houston Chronicle. Rodriguez continues to feel discomfort in his ailing groin muscle, and if he isn't ready by Friday, a decision will be made. Manager Cecil Cooper said, "Brian Moehler threw kind of a simulated game. We just wanted to line him up in case he might have to be the guy here if we don't make any kind of move. He'd be the guy that would probably take a start. He's our long guy and he hasn't pitched a whole lot here recently, so it's a chance to get him the work and kind of line him up, so to speak, so if you need him to take that start maybe he's the guy that could potentially get it."

Our View: Moehler holds a poor 1.83 WHIP and has allowed six runs and 11 hits over 7.2 innings this season, and wouldn't make a favorable fantasy prospect if the reliever gets called into action for a spot start.

The main candidates for the final spot in the Astros rotation are Woody Williams, Jack Cassel and Chris Sampson, but Brian Moehler has thrown his name into the hat with a solid spring. "He's making a strong bid to be on our team," manager Cecil Cooper said on MLB.com. "I think at any time we need to, we can stretch him to three or four [innings] if we need to." Moehler is still considered a longshot for the rotation, but he could make the team as a long reliever that could be called upon when the team needs a spot starter. Either way, he's not going to make any noise in fantasy.

Brian Moehler, trying to win a rotation spot, gave up seven hits and three runs in four innings Saturday. "Mechanically I was a little out of whack the first inning and really wasn't staying back on the mound," Moehler said in the Houston Chronicle. "The ball was moving a little too much for me and I had a hard time getting ahead of the hitters and getting pitches down where I wanted it. After the first couple of innings, I felt better."

The Marlins might skip Brian Moehler in the rotation this week, according to the Miami Herald. He's scheduled to go Friday, but the club might send Yusmeiro Petit or Renyel Pinto out to the mound instead.

Brian Moehler is being sent to the bullpen for now, but it's possible that he could return to the rotation at some point as the sixth starter, according to the AP. Manager Joe Girardi has said he's considering a six-man rotation beginning later this month to keep his young pitchers fresh.

Manager Joe Girardi and pitching coach Rick Kranitz discussed yesterday whether to keep Anibal Sanchez in the rotation or replace him with veteran Brian Moehler, who had a solid start in his return from the DL Sunday, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Despite his good outing Sunday, Moehler is expecting to go to the bullpen, and that is most likely where he is headed.

Brian Moehler is set to come off the DL Sunday, but the Marlins haven't decided whether he will pitch the first or second game of the doubleheader against the Phillies, according to the AP. Moehler has been out since July 2 with a sprained right foot.

Brian Moehler, on the DL with a strained foot, is expected to return from the DL to start during Sunday's doubleheader, according to the AP. "I imagine Sunday he'll be able to give us 85 to 90 pitches," manager Joe Giradi said. "Obviously you hope that's six or seven innings. But getting him back, I think, is helpful. The most important thing is that he pitches Sunday and he's healthy."

The Miami Herald reports that the Marlins are targeting the July 30 doubleheader against the Phillies for Brian Moehler to come off the disabled list. However, Moehler might not have a permanent spot in the rotation when he returns.
