Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSaturday 9/5, 9:31 AM CT
Russ Ortiz has been released by the Colorado Rockies.

Our View: Ortiz had pitched for Triple-A Colorado Springs since being signed by the team on August 23. In 85.2 innings for Houston this season, the 11-year veteran posted a 5.57 ERA.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 8/23, 7:45 PM CT
As expected, Russ Ortiz signed a minor league deal with the Rockies, according to the Associated Press. He was assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Our View: The club added him for insurance with Aaron Cook on the 15-day DL with a strained right shoulder. He could get some starts with Colorado this season, but would only be worth a look for deeper fantasy leagues.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 8/23, 12:13 PM CT
Veteran starting pitcher Russ Ortiz is expected to be signed by the Colorado Rockies to a minor-league deal on Sunday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Does signing Jason Giambi and Russ Ortiz on the same day constitute "going for it"? In Denver, it must. Ortiz went 3-6 with a 5.57 ERA in 13 starts for Houston earlier this season. With the Rockies rotation banged up of late, he has a real chance to get some starts down the stretch.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesMonday 8/17, 1:41 PM CT
FoxSports.com is reporting that Yankees' minor league starter Russ Ortiz has exercised his right to become a free agent. Ortiz was given the option to become a free agent if he was not recalled by the team after three minor league starts.

Our View: The Yankees wanted Ortiz to remain with their organization, but he wants to pitch for a contender and go to the playoffs. The trouble is, most contenders don't want a 35 year old pitcher who has a 5.57 ERA and 1.67 WHIP this season. Someone will sign him, but don't expect him to contribute much down the stretch.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 8/5, 6:16 PM CT
Russ Ortiz has signed a deal with the Yankees, according to Tyler Kepner's (New York Times) twitter page.

Our View: Ortiz was merely added for minor league depth at Triple-A, and he does not merit fantasy attention. He held a poor 5.57 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 85.2 innings (13 starts) with the Astros this season.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 7/30, 5:23 PM CT
Russ Ortiz was roughed up for nine earned runs on nine hits over 2.1 innings in Thursday's 12-3 loss at Chicago. He had three walks and three strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View: Ortiz had a nightmarish outing, and the Astros are not giving him a chance to bounce back as he was released.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 7/30, 4:42 PM CT
Russ Ortiz has reportedly been unconditionally released by the Astros, according to Alyson Footer's twitter page.

Our View: The 35-year-old hurler was erratic on the mound this season, and failed to save his job with a 4.75 ERA and 1.57 WHIP over 83.1 innings (12 starts). He was only an option for deeper NL-only leagues.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSaturday 7/25, 10:55 PM CT
Russ Ortiz got blasted by the light-hitting Mets on Saturday. He gave up six runs on five hits and four walks over 4.1 innings and was handed the loss in the Astros 10-3 blunder.

Our View: Ortiz is now 3-5 with a 4.75 ERA on the season. He's had a handful decent starts since joining the rotation this year, but he's fallen apart in July with an ERA around 9.00.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/19, 7:51 PM CT
Russ Ortiz pitched well on Sunday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Astros' fell to the Dodgers by a score of 4-3. Ortiz went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out four.

Our View: Ortiz is 3-4 on the season, and he has an ERA of 4.33 in that time as well. The numbers don't blow you away, but overall they aren't all that bad. He isn't a big strikeout guy, but if the Astros get hot in the second half he could see his win total rise significantly.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 7/9, 10:18 PM CT
Russ Ortiz surrendered four earned runs on six hits over only three innings in Thursday's 9-4 win over the Nationals at Minute Maid Park. He had two walks and one strikeout.

Our View: He ended the night with a no-decision, and is winless over his last six starts. He has allowed 12 earned runs over his last two outings, and is only worth a look for deeper fantasy leagues for his next battle.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSaturday 7/4, 5:42 PM CT
Russ Ortiz had a disastrous outing on Saturday, surrendering eight earned runs in just 5.2 innings of work while walking five, as the Astros got dominated by Tim Lincecum and San Francisco 9-0.

Our View: Ortiz was coming off two great starts in a row, but was absolutely rocked on Saturday. He is still a decent spot starting option, but not someone you should have on your roster full-time.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 6/28, 5:53 PM CT
Russ Ortiz was very good again on Sunday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Astros fell to the Tigers 4-3. Ortiz went 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five. His ERA now sits at 3.36 on the season.

Our View: Ortiz has come seemingly out of nowhere to be a solid starter for the Astros. His record isn't ovewhelming, but his ERA is solid and he is pitching deep into games. He has graduated to an NL-only pitching option, and a few more solid starts could make him a mixed league option as well.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 6/23, 10:39 PM CT
Russ Ortiz went seven innings for the first time since April 20, 2007 on Tuesday, but still got outdueled by Zack Greinke as the Astros lost 2-1.

Our View: Ortiz has been a pleasant surprie for Houston in 2009, and is now 3-3 with a 3.47 ERA in 57 innings pitched. He is a solid spot starting option.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesMonday 6/15, 9:07 AM CT
Russ Ortiz will start Wednesday for Houston against the Rangers according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Ortiz's slow return from the dead continues. He could be worth a spot start if you are absolutely desperate for pitching, but he doesn't appear to be a good option against the Rangers loaded lineup at the ever offensive friendly Ballpark in Arlington.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 6/11, 5:38 PM CT
Russ Ortiz was superb in his start on Thursday against the Cubs, going 5.1 innings while allowing only three hits and striking out five. It was his first start since May 7.

Our View: Unfortunately for Ortiz, he's rarely been good when called on to start in 2009. Until he strings together a few quality starts in a row, you should not consider adding him to your team.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 6/7, 5:04 PM CT
Russ Ortiz pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief on Sunday. He allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out three and helped the Astros to a 6-4 over the Pirates.

Our View: Ortiz has been decent out of the pen this season, but strugges when he's called on to start. He lost his job in the rotation and doesn't hold much fantasy value as a long reliever.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 5/7, 11:19 PM CT
Russ Ortiz got slammed by the Cubs on Thursday, as he only lasted 2.1 innings and gave up three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out one. It was his first loss of the season.

Our View: Ortiz got skipped in his last start due to rain, and the Astros probably should have skipped him again tonight. Houston's bullpen has been drastically overworked in the last week, and tonight didn't help that at all. Ortiz may be 2-1 on the year, but he hasn't been great. His fantasy value is very limited at this point.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 5/5, 1:16 PM CT
Russ Ortiz appears in line to start for the Astros on Thursday against the Cubs, according to MLB.com. "He threw a light 'pen [session] last night and should be ready to go on Thursday," manager Cecil Cooper said

Our View: Due to a rainout last week Ortiz had his last turn through the rotation skipped. Our advice to you would be to skip starting Ortiz all together as he owns a 5.21 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and an atrocious 8.05 BB/9 mark in his 19 innings.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 4/26, 5:22 PM CT
Russ Ortiz had a decent start on Sunday against the Brewers. He didn't go deep, lasting just five innings, but only surrendered two runs on four hits and four free passes. The bullpen hung on and Ortiz was rewarded with his second win of the season.

Our View: Ortiz is now 2-0, but is sporting a 5.30 ERA. His biggest problem has been control, issuing 15 walks in 18.2 innings and he's throwing an awful lot of pitches. He needed 96 to get through five innings on Sunday.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSaturday 4/4, 4:48 PM CT
Russ Ortiz has been named the fifth starter in the Astros' rotation, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He beat Jose Capellan for the job. Ortiz earned the spot by recording a 3.18 ERA over seven spring outings, holding opponents to two earned runs or less in each of his final three appearances.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 4/1, 9:01 AM CT
The Houston Chronicle reports that Russ Ortiz will likely make the Astros opening day roster following a solid six inning outing against the Braves on Tuesday.

Our View: Ortiz has not played since making 12 appearances and posting a 5.51 ERA for the Giants in 2007. In the two seasons before that, he had an 8.14 and 6.89 ERA, which seems to solidify his odds of not being selected in any fantasy league.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 3/31, 8:24 AM CT
Russ Ortiz is set for his final Grapefruit League start Tuesday against the Braves, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Ortiz has fared well this spring, and another solid outing should help him nail down the fifth spot in the Astros' rotation. He has been competing with Jose Capellan for the job.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 3/25, 3:04 PM CT
Russ Ortiz allowed one earned run on five hits over five innings in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Cardinals, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: This was a good enough outing to keep him in the race for the fifth spot in the Astros' rotation. The other candidate for the job is Jose Capellan.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 3/25, 7:40 AM CT
Russ Ortiz will start Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Ortiz is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA so far in the spring, but he only allowed one hit over six innings in his last outing against the Reds. Ortiz is still battling Jose Capellan for the fifth spot in the Astros' rotation.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesFriday 3/20, 2:40 PM CT
Russ Ortiz only allowed one hit over six innings in Friday's 4-2 win over the Reds, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: This performance should push Ortiz closer to winning the fifth spot in the Astros' rotation, which would make him worth a look for NL-only leagues.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesFriday 3/20, 7:44 AM CT
Russ Ortiz will start Friday's exhibition game against the Reds, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Ortiz could improve his bid for the fifth spot in the rotation with a strong outing. He did not fare well in his last time on the hill.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 3/17, 8:24 AM CT
Russ Ortiz remains in the running for the fifth spot in the Astros' rotation, according to the Houston Chronicle. Ortiz did not fare well in his outing last Saturday, but skipper Cecil Cooper said, "He did not fall out of graces, no. I thought he did OK. He just did not have a good feel for his breaking ball. But other than that he was fine. "He got his pitch count, which is the main thing."

Our View: If Ortiz does win the job, he would only be worth a look in NL-only leagues, as he only racked up 27 strikeouts over 49 innings in 2008, with a 1.57 WHIP.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 2/26, 8:24 AM CT
Russ Ortiz was pleased with his performance against the Nationals Wednesday as he only allowed one walk and struck out three batters, according to the Houston Chronicle. Skipper Cecil Cooper was pleased as well, and he said, "Russ, I thought, threw the ball really well."

Our View: Ortiz is competing for the fifth spot in the Astros' rotation, and would be worth a look in NL-only leagues if he wins the job.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 1/13, 3:03 PM CT
The Houston Astros have signed right-hander Russ Ortiz to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training, according to the Houston Chronicle. "Russ Ortiz should be able to come to camp and be a serious contender for a spot in the big league rotation. He’ll have every opportunity in Spring Training to win a job," said the team's GM, Ed Wade.

Our View: Ortiz has missed much of 2007 and all of 2008 after having Tommy John surgery. He was a solid pitcher in 2003, winning 21 games (though he sported a 3.81 ERA and 1.31), but it has been downhill since. He had a decent '04, but in 2005 his ERA was 6.89 and WHIP was 1.84, and in 2006, his ERA was a ghastly 8.14 with a WHIP of 2.00. He was performing poorly in 2007 as well - 5.51 ERA, 1.57 WHIP - before getting injured.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSaturday 9/1, 7:58 AM CT
It turns out that when Russ Ortiz underwent a procedure to repair a torn tendon in his throwing elbow, he also required Tommy John surgery, according to the Contra Costa Times. Ortiz will miss all of next season, though the 33-year-old plans to return to action for the 2009 campaign.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 8/22, 5:29 AM CT
Russ Ortiz has a torn tendon in his throwing elbow that likely will sideline him for the remainder of the season and could require surgery, the AP reports. Ortiz was placed on the disabled list Tuesday for the third time this year. Ortiz certainly hasn't been fooling anyone this year, with a 5.51 ERA and 1.57 ratio.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 8/21, 11:20 AM CT
Russ Ortiz, who left Monday's start with an elbow injury, will undergo an MRI today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "He didn't look right," catcher Bengie Molina said. "I had to go out there and ask him. I told him, 'This is your arm. It's for your own good. If you don't feel right, say something.'" Kevin Correia or Pat Misch likely will take Ortiz's next turn in the rotation against the Brewers on Saturday.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesMonday 8/20, 3:23 PM CT
Russ Ortiz left Monday's game against in the fifth inning with a strained elbow, according to the AP. It's not clear at this point how severe the injury is. Ortiz gave up five runs (four earned) in four innings before exiting.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 8/12, 6:47 AM CT
Russ Ortiz came out of his start Friday with no problems and is on track to take his next turn Wednesday at Atlanta, the AP reports. He was activated Friday from the disabled list after recovering from a right forearm strain that shelved him for two months. Ortiz is a risky start against anyone these days, but especially the Braves, who have been piling up runs like nobody's business over the last few weeks.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 8/7, 11:16 AM CT
Russ Ortiz is expected to start Thursday's game in place of the injured Noah Lowry. Ortiz allowed five runs and six hits in five innings Saturday in his final rehab start with Triple-A Fresno. He has been out since June 7 because of a strained right forearm, according to the Mercury News.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 8/1, 3:08 AM CT
Russ Ortiz (forearm strain) is set to make another rehab start either Friday or Saturday for Triple-A Fresno, the AP reports. He could make some starts and end the year as San Francisco's fifth starter. The Giants just began a stretch with 31 games in 30 days and could need Ortiz, for better or for worse.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/29, 9:55 PM CT
Russ Ortiz allowed two unearned runs and two hits in four innings in a rehab start for Single-A San Jose Saturday. "He will probably get one more start," manager Bruce Bochy said in the AP. Ortiz is coming back from a forearm strain. He'll be used out of the bullpen when he returns.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/22, 7:53 AM CT
The Giants have changed the rehab plans of Russ Ortiz to get him into the starting rotation upon his return from a strained right forearm. He's going to start Monday's rehab game for Triple-A Fresno and begin stretching himself out to start for the Giants, according to the Contra Costa Times. Ortiz has started five games and appeared in four others as a reliever this season. It's possible the Giants could scrap the plan and keep him in the bullpen, but it looks like they are preparing for the possibility of trading one of their current starters, like Matt Morris.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/15, 8:01 AM CT
Russ Ortiz is slated to toss a simulated game on Sunday. If all goes well, he should head out for a rehab assignment early next week, according to the Contra Costa Times. He's on the disabled list with a strained right forearm and could return to the mix later this month.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/8, 7:20 AM CT
Russ Ortiz will throw bullpen sessions Sunday and Tuesday. He's aiming to toss a simulated game on July 14 and begin a rehab assignment soon after that, according to the Contra Costa Times. Ortiz is recovering slowly from a strained right forearm and won't come off the disabled list until at least late July.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 6/24, 7:54 AM CT
Russ Ortiz was able to make about 40 throws from 60 feet on Saturday. He reported no discomfort in his strained right forearm, according to the Contra Costa Times. "I didn't feel like it's been 21/2 weeks since I've thrown," said Ortiz. Despite the positive step, Ortiz likely remains a few weeks away from game action.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesFriday 6/8, 6:33 AM CT
Russ Ortiz went back on the DL Thursday due to a strained right forearm, the AP reports. The Giants recalled Jonathan Sanchez to take his roster spot. Ortiz has been ineffective for most of the year, so he's not worth waiting on in any format - cut bait.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 6/7, 10:50 AM CT
Russ Ortiz tried to throw on Wednesday but his forearm injury was still bothering him. Manager Bruce Bochy said that the right-hander could land on the disabled list, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He'll undergo an MRI today, and a decision on his status could be made shortly after.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 6/6, 10:49 AM CT
Russ Ortiz, who has been battling a forearm injury, felt better on Tuesday, and he's expected to test his arm by throwing before today's game, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He insists the forearm problem is unrelated to the elbow injury that put him on the DL last month. "I just might have tweaked something in the forearm area," Ortiz said. "I was expecting it to be stiff or sore, and I don't feel it at all. It feels pretty good."
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 6/5, 10:52 AM CT
Russ Ortiz, who left Monday's game with a forearm injury, will be re-evaluated today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "It doesn't feel as sore as I thought it would. That's one thing that's encouraging," said Ortiz. He's considered day-to-day.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesMonday 6/4, 10:04 PM CT
Russ Ortiz pitched 2/3 of an inning on Monday before leaving with a forearm injury in the eighth, according to the AP. He's listed as day-to-day.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesMonday 5/21, 9:22 PM CT
Russ Ortiz came off the disabled list on Monday and was sent to the Giants' bullpen, according to the AP. He had been sidelined since May 2 with an irritated nerve in his pitching elbow.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 5/20, 7:42 AM CT
Russ Ortiz is slated to come off the disabled list on Monday. However, manager Bruce Bochy said that Ortiz will pitch out of the bullpen, rather than return to the rotation, according to the Contra Costa Times. "He's versatile," Bochy said. "He could go long, he could help us out in the middle innings, he could help us out setting up. Every game you have a need, so it will be game by game how we use him." That's one way to put it -- another would be that rookie Tim Lincecum has looked too good to be bumped from the rotation for Ortiz.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 5/10, 3:38 AM CT
Russ Ortiz plans to do some light throwing off a mound Thursday, the AP reports. He's on the DL with an irritated nerve in his throwing elbow, though he's been able to play catch the last three days.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 5/3, 9:24 PM CT
Russ Ortiz went on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with right elbow neuritis, the Giants official site reports. San Francisco recalled infielder Kevin Frandsen from Fresno to take Ortiz's spot on the active roster, though this injury also clears the way for highly-regarded prospect Tim Lincecum to join the team for his MLB debut Sunday.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 3/28, 10:29 PM CT
Russ Ortiz has been officially named the Giants fifth starter, according to the team's official site. He'll follow Barry Zito, Matt Cain, Matt Morris, and Noah Lowry. Ortiz had a 3.00 ERA in 18 spring innings this month, with five walks and 13 strikeouts.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 3/20, 5:25 PM CT
Russ Ortiz looked good for the Giants Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings while striking out six. Ortiz's spring ERA sits at 3.00 for 18 innings of work, and he's all but locked down a rotation spot to begin the year. He's trying to get his career back on track after posting a 7.33 ERA over the last two seasons.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 3/15, 10:22 AM CT
Although manager Bruce Bochy has yet to announce it, it's clear that Russ Ortiz has all but locked up the No. 5 spot in the rotation, according to the Mercury News. Ortiz has a 3.00 ERA in 12 spring innings.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 3/7, 7:56 AM CT
Russ Ortiz, who said he shed 12-13 pounds during the offseason, was throwing pitches at 93-94 mph during Monday's game against his old club, the Diamondbacks, according to the Arizona Republic. "He didn't hit 90 all last spring for us," one Diamondbacks official said. Ortiz is competing for a rotation spot with the Giants this spring.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesFriday 3/2, 11:13 AM CT
Russ Ortiz, who is competing for a rotation spot, was lights out against the Cubs on Thursday, throwing three perfect innings while striking out three. He's been nothing short of dreadful the past two seasons, but perhaps a move back to the National League and pitching in AT&T Park could lead to a rebound this year.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesTuesday 1/9, 10:48 PM CT
Russ Ortiz agreed to a $380,000, one-year contract Tuesday to rejoin the Giants, according to the AP. It was a low-risk move for San Francisco, which will pay Ortiz the major league minimum, with Arizona responsible for the remainder of his $8.5 million salary for 2007. He will compete for the fifth starter spot this spring.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/23, 8:28 AM CT
Russ Ortiz could be brought back into the rotation next Saturday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He was removed from the rotation after making an emergency start last night and failing to record an out. "I told Ortiz, 'Don't count yourself out of that thing,' " said manager Sam Perlozzo. "For now, we just want him to concentrate on being in the 'pen." Ortiz is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA in just 12 IP (four starts) for the Orioles this season.
Russ Ortiz, P, Colorado RockiesSaturday 7/22, 9:29 PM CT
The Orioles dropped Russ Ortiz from their rotation on Saturday, according to the AP. The move comes one day after Ortiz didn't retire any of the six batters he faced in a 14-7 loss Friday to Tampa Bay. Baltimore won't need a fifth starter until July 29. Ortiz, Bruce Chen and minor leaguer Hayden Penn are among the potential options to make that start.
