Juan Encarnacion, RF, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 11/10, 6:10 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Juan Encarnacion filed for free agency on Monday. The 32-year-old has not played since August 30, 2007, when he was struck in the face by a foul ball while he stood in the on-deck circle at Busch Stadium. He suffered severe vision impairment as a result of the incident and spent all of 2008 away from the team recuperating. "I believe he still has a difficult road ahead," Cardinals' general manager John Mozeliak said.

Our View: He had been a good bench outfielder for fantasy teams in the years leading up to the injury. It remains to be seen if he will be able to return to a starting job next season.

The eye injury that Juan Encarnacion suffered in late August last year will likely keep the outfielder from playing in 2008, and the Cardinals aren't sure if he'll ever play again. Encarnacion was standing in the on-deck circle on Aug. 31 when a foul ball struck him in the left eye, fracturing the orbital bone and causing damage to his vision that he may never regain. "As far as an update on whether he'll play or not I would say it's probably likely he will not," GM John Mozeliak told the AP. "But until we actually see him in St. Louis and get our own doctors to deal with that, it will be hard for me to answer that firmly."

Juan Encarnacion is in Boston visiting an eye specialist to judge the improvement in his left eye. He is also considering treatments for the potentially career-threatening injury, which occurred when he was struck by a foul ball while standing on the on-deck circle, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Encarnacion will require surgery to repair fractures to the orbital bone, but doctors have been more concerned with possible damage to his optic nerve.

Juan Encarnacion was released from the hospital on Tuesday, but doctors have yet to decide when surgery will take place to repair his fractured left eye socket, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He's still dealing with post-concussion syndrome," trainer Barry Weinberg said. "Even though his eye is the major long-term concern, right now he's dealing with a serious concussion. ... He still has those side effects. The combination of the eye and the concussion ... is significant." Although nothing is set in stone, Encarnacion's baseball career is in jeopardy.

Juan Encarnacion's baseball career is in jeopardy after suffering what the Cardinals dubbed a "serious" eye injury when he was hit in the head by a foul ball Friday while standing in the on-deck circle. He has multiple fractures of the eye socket, though the exact severity of the damage won't be determined until the swelling goes down, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The vision in his eye is in jeopardy, and he clearly will not play again this season.

Juan Encarnacion's knee injury has responded well to treatment, and he believes he is ready to play this weekend against the Cubs, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It feels a lot better," Encarnacion said. "The rest and treatment have been good for it. I feel like I can play. We'll see." With all of that said, the final decision lies with manager Tony La Russa, and he may choose to be cautious with the outfielder.

Juan Encarnacion was officially a late scratch Sunday due to knee soreness. However, there are also rumors floating around that Encarnacion is not happy about sitting out the last few games in favor of Rick Ankiel, and manager Tony La Russa was peeved about the following comments Encarnacion made in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "It's something that I know at some point it will be clear what their plan is and I should give it a few more days," the outfielder said. "If they don't need my services, then maybe they can find me some other place I can be. There has to be a need for me somewhere." Expect GM Walt Jocketty to call around to try and find a taker for Encarnacion.

Juan Encarnacion, RF, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 3/18, 7:01 PM CT
Juan Encarnacion remains behind schedule in his recovery from wrist surgery and almost certainly will not be ready for opening day, according to the AP. "I'm just starting out (with my swing), and working on it from the beginning," Encarnacion said. "It's better. It's better. But I would rather be able to play all year than to try and rush right now to be ready (for opening day) and only play a little bit before having a problem again."
