Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 6/23, 11:23 PM CT
Kerry Wood claimed his ninth save of the season in Tuesday's 5-4 win at Pittsburgh. He gave up one earned run on two hits over two thirds of an inning, and had two walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Wood has allowed runs in each of his last four outings, and almost blew his third save of June. He will remain an unstable fantasy closer, especially with the struggling Indians.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 5/19, 10:28 PM CT
Kerry Wood allowed four runs on three hits in just 0.2 innings as he blew the save and took the loss against the Royals on Tuesday.

Our View: Wood has been anything but automatic this season, but he has been a strikeout machine. He is still an option as a closer, but his value has decreased since the season started.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 4/27, 9:09 PM CT
Kerry Wood allowed three hits, two walks, and three earned runs while recording only two outs and taking the loss against Boston on Monday.

Our View: Wood has allowed runs in three of his eight starts, but this was his worst outing yet. He was pitching on consecutive nights for the first time this season and thrown 41 pitches in those appearances. He may be unavailable over the next couple games for the Indians.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 4/21, 9:40 PM CT
Kerry Wood struggled on his way to his second save of the season on Tueday. Wood allowed two runs on a home run by David DeJesus while striking out two batters in the ninth inning of Cleveland's 8-7 win.

Our View: Perhaps the poor performances of the other Cleveland relievers is rubbing off on Wood. He should be a fine option as long as he is healthy, but he tends to make things more interesting than necessary.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 4/15, 4:38 PM CT
Kerry Wood earned his first save of the season on Wednesday in the Indians' 5-4 win over the Royals. He has given up only one run while striking out six in his three outings this year.

Our View: Wood looks to be on track, as he finally got a save opportunity and converted it with no problems. He is looking like he could be an elite closer in 2009 if he can stay healthy.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 4/12, 5:03 PM CT
Kerry Wood struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning of Sunday's 8-4 win over the Blue Jays. Unfortunately, he was unable to record his first save of the season.

Our View: That gives Wood six whiffs over two innings of work in 2009, apparently pointing to the fact that he may be as nasty as ever. As usual, the concern with him is injuries, but until he suffers a set back, he should be a fairly strong play.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 4/4, 7:45 PM CT
Kerry Wood allowed three hits and two earned runs in one inning of work on Saturday in Cleveland's 4-3 win over Houston.

Our View: Not exactly a strong performance from Kerry, but he has had a pretty solid spring overall. As always, he will be as valuable as he is healthy this season.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 3/11, 12:14 PM CT
According to the Associated Press, Kerry Wood worked a scoreless inning with a strikeout in Tuesday's spring game against the Angels.

Our View: Wood seems on track this spring and can be an extremely valuable closer when fully healthy.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 3/4, 1:34 PM CT
Bud Shaw of the Plain Dealer reports that Kerry Wood threw his first live session this spring and felt no discomfort in his back. Wood apparently threw hard and looked convincingly effective against live hitters. He is scheduled to appear in his first game next Tuesday.

Our View: This is good news for Wood. He's an injury monkey, so he's not in the clear yet, but it's a promising start. When healthy he is a top 10 closer option.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 2/27, 8:17 AM CT
Kerry Wood noted that his back is no longer sore, according to Yahoo Sports. He will throw a bullpen session today.

Our View: The Indians want him to make two appearances in the Cactus League by March 10, so his back ailment did not push him off schedule. We will continue to monitor his back, due to his poor track record with injuries.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 2/26, 7:11 AM CT
Kerry Wood is nursing a sore back, according to the SF Chronicle. He hasn't thrown off a mound since last weekend, and he will rest for a few more days before resuming his pitching routine.

Our View: Wood had a poor track record with durability during his days with the Cubs, so this ailment is worth monitoring.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 1/18, 4:42 PM CT
Showing some serious class, Kerry Wood took out an add on Sunday to thanks Cubs fans for their support the past 10 years, according to the Associated Press. The add read in part, ""Although I'm a member of a new 'Tribe,' I will forever be a Chicagoan."

Our View: Wood will try to build upon his 34 save effort of last season in Cleveland this year after the Cubs were unwilling to offer a substantial deal to him this off-season due to his injury filled past.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 12/31, 1:17 PM CT
The Sports Network reports that Kerry Wood has passed a physical, officially making him a member of the Cleveland Indians.

Our View: Wood has been the victim of a long string of shoulder problems that limited him to just 14 starts from 2005-07. Wood's two-year deal reportedly will pay him $10 million a season and has a club option for 2011. Penciled in as the Cleveland closer, Wood should provide leadership and stability at the back end of an Indians bullpen that clearly lacked both attributes a season ago.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 12/19, 12:05 PM CT
Kerry Wood commented on pitching in the AL with the Indians, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Wood said, "I'm excited to get going. Coming to Cleveland is a challenge. I enjoy challenges. It never crossed my mind about switching leagues when I entered free agency. What was important was coming to a solid organization. All I heard was great things about the fans, the front office and everything top to bottom."

Our View: He previously added that he does not have the urge to move back to the rotation as a starting pitcher, and is looking forward to being the Indians' closer.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 12/13, 9:46 AM CT
The AP reports that the Cleveland Indians have made their signing of Kerry Wood official.

Our View: Wood got a two-year deal worth about $20 million, and there is also a vesting option for a third year. Fantasy owners can expect similar numbers to what he did in 2008.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 12/10, 11:09 AM CT
GM Mark Shapiro stated that Kerry Wood to Cleveland is not yet a done deal, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Shapiro said, "We have obviously made progress, but it's not a done deal at this point."

Our View: If there is a deal, the Indians won't make it official until the oft-injured Wood passes a physical. The club has made him an offer for two years, and may include a vesting option for a third year.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 12/9, 11:58 PM CT
Kerry Wood has signed a two-year deal with the Indians with a vesting option, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: This deal will help stabilize the Indians' bullpen and will likely be announced on Wednesday.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 12/9, 1:19 PM CT
MLB.com reports that the Indians appear to be nearing a deal to sign closer Kerry Wood to a two-year contract.

Our View: Wood went 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA and 34 saves in 65 appearances for the Cubs last season. He struck out 84 batters and walked 18 in 66 1/3 innings.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 12/9, 8:04 AM CT
The Detroit Tigers are interested in adding free agent closer Kerry Wood, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: The Tigers filled their holes on offense cheaply by adding Adam Everett and Gerald Laird which means there is likely more money to spend on the bullpen. The Tigers struggled in the role last season with a mixture of Todd Jones, Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 12/8, 10:00 PM CT
Kerry Wood took a meeting with the Cleveland Indians about their ninth-inning duties, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Our View: Cleveland went through approximately 74 closers last season after the combustible Joe Borowski finally blew up.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 12/6, 1:00 PM CT
Kerry Wood is going to receive a two-year offer from the Mets between $16-to-18 million, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View: Wood will be competing with K-Rod and Brian Fuentes for the Mets' closer spot, as both of those players are to receive an offer as well.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 12/5, 3:54 PM CT
Cubs' GM Jim Hendry indicated that the Tigers and Mets have garnered the most interest in Kerry Wood, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Wood would fill the Tigers' void at closer, as he nailed down 34 saves with the Cubs in 2008, while maintaining a strong 1.09 WHIP. The Tigers stated last month that they weren't going to pursue Wood, but have apparently changed their mind.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 12/3, 11:23 AM CT
Despite Dusty Baker saying he wanted to put a call in to Kerry Wood, Reds GM Walt Jocketty said the team is not going to pursue him, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It would be pretty tough with (Francisco) Cordero as our closer," Jocketty said.

Our View: Wood should try to stay as far away from Dusty Baker as possible, in case his former manager with the Cubs decides to pitch him 17 days in a row.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 12/2, 3:09 PM CT
The Brewers are believed to be interested in Kerry Wood, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: The Brewers are in the market for a solid closer, and Wood be a good fit for the club, as he nailed down 34 saves while maintaining a 1.09 WHIP with Chicago in 2008. The Reds are also interested, but want to employ him as a setup man.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 12/2, 10:21 AM CT
Skipper Dusty Baker intends to talk to Kerry Wood about serving as a setup man with the Reds, according to the Chicago Tribune. Baker said, "We have a closer already in Francisco Cordero, who we have under contract for a few more years. But somebody can use Kerry Wood. I am going to call him. I like Kerry Wood as a person, not just as a ballplayer, but as a person. I will give him a call and see what's up."

Our View: Wood nailed down 34 saves with Chicago in 2008, but his fantasy stock would take a hit as a setup man with Cincinnati. The Cubs did not offer him salary arbitration, so teams will not have to give up draft picks to ink him.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 11/30, 11:56 AM CT
The Cubs are likely to offer Kerry Wood salary arbitration, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Wood is a Type-A free agent and offering him arbitration will guarantee the Cubs two draft picks if and when he signs with another MLB club. Wood has a very poor track record with durability, but it won't be hard for him to find a new home as he nailed down 34 saves with a 1.09 WHIP with Chicago in 2008.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 11/26, 10:45 AM CT
The Mets may be willing to consider Kerry Wood for their bullpen, but have concerns regarding his poor track record with durability, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View: Wood nailed down 34 saves for the Cubs last season with a strong 1.09 WHIP, but is not viewed as a stable enough option for the Mets, who missed the playoffs last season due to bullpen issues after losing Billy Wagner. Francisco Rodriguez is the top target for the Mets, with Brian Fuentes second.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 11/25, 10:51 PM CT
The Arizona Diamondbacks were said to have some interest in Kerry Wood but FOXSports.com is reporting that they will not offer him a contract.

Our View: There are plenty of teams that have some interest in Wood. The Rangers are one of the teams that are believed to have the most.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 11/17, 10:31 AM CT
The Texas Rangers are interested in acquiring the services of closer Kerry Wood, but they would have to deal Hank Blalock in order to make that happen financially, according to Peter Gammons of ESPN.com.

Our View: Wood is from Texas, and he is said to have idolized Rangers team president Nolan Ryan growing up, so there is a possible fit there, if the team is willing to deal the oft-injured Blalock.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 11/16, 6:29 PM CT
The Detroit Tigers will not make an attempt to sign closer Kerry Wood, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Despite their need for a ninth-inning man, the team does not want to give a closer a long-term deal, which Wood is seeking.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 11/14, 6:10 PM CT
Kerry Wood wanted to stay with the Cubs, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The Cubs wanted to go cheaper at closer and after trading for Marlins closer Kevin Gregg, Wood's fate was sealed. He should get plenty of offers after having a solid season for the Cubs last year, saving 34 games in 40 opportunities.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 11/14, 9:16 AM CT
There is belief the Rangers will make a "strong run" at free agent hurler Kerry Wood, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View: Wood would benefit from leaving launching pad Wrigley Field for hitter friendly Rangers Ballpark, and would be a strong addition to their pen if he can stay healthy. Huston Street is also on the Rangers' list of targets among relievers.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 11/13, 3:36 PM CT
The Chicago Cubs will not re-sign free agent pitcher Kerry Wood, according to the Chicago Tribune. "We're just in a situation, as Kerry fully understands, that that length of deal, for the kind of salary he'd command right now, is not our first priority," said Chicago GM Jim Hendry.

Our View: Wood should be a fairly hot commodity on the free agent market for teams that could use a closer. The biggest worry for him coming into the season was his control, but he walked just 2.44 batters per nine innings while striking out 11.40.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 10/31, 6:39 PM CT
Cubs' closer Kerry Wood filed for free agency on Friday, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Wood made a comeback this season as a closer and finished with 34 saves and a 5-4 record. He had 84 strikeouts in 66.1 innings, however he had two very rocky months in July and September and there still has to be question marks when general managers consider signing him to a long-term deal.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 9/12, 11:23 AM CT
Kerry Wood has been scored upon in three of his last four outings, but manager Lou Piniella is not concerned and believes Wood just simply needs to see more action to keep him sharp and effective, according to the Chicago Tribune. Piniella said, "We need for Woody to get nice and sharp, and the only way we're going to do that is by getting him work."

Our View: The Cubs still have faith in him, and fantasy owners should as well, with about two weeks left in the regular season.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 9/11, 10:48 PM CT
Kerry Wood, in his first season as a closer, recorded a milestone on Thursday night as he picked up his 30th save of the year for the Cubs.

Our View: Wood has been awful of late having allowed seven runs over his last three appearances entering tonight's outing, so it was nice to see him work and inning without giving up a run. Wood figures to continue to be run out there in the ninth inning barring some unforeseen occurrence despite whispers that he is dealing with an injury.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 9/8, 11:00 AM CT
Kerry Wood blew his sixth save of the season on Sunday, and looked rusty in the process. In his defense, it was his first appearance in five days.

Our View: Wood would have escaped the jam if not for a tailor-made double-play ball hitting the lip of the infield grass and bouncing over Ronny Cedeno’s glove. Just another day at the office for a closer.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 9/7, 3:23 PM CT
Wood entered Sunday's game with a two-run lead but picked up the loss after allowing three runs, two earned.

Our View: It's Wood's fourth loss and sixth blown save of the year. He had trouble throwing strikes and now has losses in two consecutive appearances. Perhaps his stint of four appearances in four days during late August is taking its toll.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 8/29, 2:01 PM CT
Kerry Wood has thrown four straight days, but he is ready to pitch for a fifth consecutive day, according to MLB.com. "I felt great [Thursday], and I feel good again today," he said.

Our View: Wood has been a bit of a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners, many of whom expected Carlos Marmol to take the ninth inning role away from Wood at some point this season. But Wood has been great, with a WHIP under 1.00 while averaging nearly 11 K/9.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 8/27, 2:16 PM CT
Although Kerry Wood has pitched in the Cubs' previous two games, neither of them were save opportunities. In last night's game Wood gave up his first run since coming off the DL. But today Wood recorded his 27th save with a perfect ninth.

Our View: In Wood's previous nine innings since coming off the DL he has only given up one run.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 8/21, 5:55 PM CT
Kerry Wood pitched a perfect ninth as he struck out two and collected his 26th save of the season today against the Reds.

Our View: Wood hasn't allowed and earned run in his last seven appearances, his finger issues seem to be a thing of the past.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 8/15, 10:30 AM CT
Kerry Wood has officially reclaimed the closer's role with Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: He hurled a scoreless ninth inning against Atlanta Thursday. He should be penciled back into fantasy lineups for the next fantasy week.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 8/14, 9:50 AM CT
Kerry Wood is ready to resume the closer's role with the Cubs, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He threw a perfect eighth inning on Wednesday against Atlanta, and manager Lou Piniella said, "Wood threw some nice breaking balls for strikes. That'll free us now to start moving Carlos Marmol into the setup role."

Our View: Wood should be ready to pencil back into fantasy lineups as a closer for the next fantasy week.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 8/13, 1:21 PM CT
Skipper Lou Piniella stated that Kerry Wood will make one more appearance in a non-save situation before returning to the closer's role with the Cubs, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Piniella said, "We're going to give him one more tightener. Kerry basically feels that he's ready, and he probably is. But we want to give him one more appearance."

Our View: He is not dealing with any back issues, and his finger is believed to be fine. Barring a setback, Wood should be ready to place back into fantasy lineups next week as the Cubs' closer.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 8/9, 3:10 PM CT
Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood says he is ready to pitch, one day after being held out of the game with back tightness, according to Cubs.com.

Our View: The injury was not believed to be serious, and that has turned out to be accurate. Keep him in your fantasy lineups.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 8/9, 2:14 PM CT
Kerry Wood was not available during Friday's contest against the Cardinals, as he has a back injury, according to the Chicago Tribune. The extent of his injury is unknown, but not believed to be serious.

Our View: Wood may not be available to pitch on Saturday, and he had just come back from the DL after dealing with a sprained finger.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 8/5, 4:29 PM CT
As expected, Kerry Wood came on to work the eighth inning against the Astros on Tuesday. He allowed one hit over the scoreless frame and needed only seven pitches.

Our View: The Cubs wanted to test Wood in a setup role before moving him back to the ninth inning. He could be back in the closer's seat as soon as Wednesday.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 8/5, 12:55 PM CT
As expected, Kerry Wood has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, according to PA Sports Ticker.

Our View: Wood will pitch at least once in middle relief before regaining his closer role.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 8/5, 9:55 AM CT
Kerry Wood is expected to come off the disabled list Tuesday or Wednesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Wood will pitch at least once in middle relief before regaining his closer role.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 8/4, 6:18 PM CT
His blister has nearly healed, so Kerry Wood will come off the DL in a matter of days, according to the AP. Wood will initially be used in middle relief upon his return.

Our View: Lou Piniella wants Wood to gradually get back into the role of closer, so Carlos Marmol will continue getting save chances until that happens.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 8/3, 1:57 PM CT
Cubs closer Kerry Wood faced batters on Sunday but probably will not return from a troubling blister on his right index finger until later this week, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: Sidelined since July 11, Wood had hoped to return from the disabled list during Chicago's upcoming series against Houston. Instead, manager Lou Piniella said he likely will not be activated until the Cubs host St. Louis next weekend.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 8/1, 11:08 AM CT
Cubs closer Kerry Wood could make his return to the mound next Friday when the Cubs take on the St. Louis Cardinals, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Initially out with a blister, Wood now says it is not a blister anymore, but an "open wound." He says the skin around it is hardening, and he threw a simulated game on Thursday.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 7/31, 1:37 PM CT
Kerry Wood had a 26-pitch simulated game Thursday and was able to throw all his pitches, according to MLB.com. Wood had not thrown since July 11 because of a nagging blister on his right index finger. "I'm beyond antsy," Wood said. "It's the [darndest] thing I've ever seen. I can't explain it, and nobody here can explain it. We've tried just about everything we could think of, and tried some things we probably shouldn't have. I think time is going to be the best thing for it."

Our View: Despite the positive step in Wood's recovery, the Cubs have not placed a timetable on his return.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 7/30, 8:03 PM CT
Kerry Wood had to skip his scheduled throwing session on Wednesday because of the blister on his finger, according to MLB.com. "Initially, they had talked about a simulated game, bringing a few hitters here, and let him get some work in with a pad on his finger," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "That didn't happen, because he's really not close to coming back, so why risk it?"

Our View: Wood can throw his changeup but until he can let loose with his fastball he obviously can't return to the hill. There is therefore no established date for his return, which means Carlos Marmol remains the favorite for saves though rookie Jeff Samardzija could also be in the mix.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 7/29, 8:34 AM CT
Kerry Wood threw Monday afternoon but did so with a protective pad on his right index finger, according to the Arlington Daily Herald. "He threw with the protective pad on it for a while, and it felt OK," manager Lou Piniella said. "Then he took it off and tried to throw without it and couldn't. When he's ready, he'll let us know."

Our View: Wood is eligible to come off the DL today, but he won't be back for another several days. Jeff Samardzija, Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry will form a closer by committee while Wood is out.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 7/26, 1:04 PM CT
The Trade Deadline is Thursday, and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said they may not make a move unless an injury warrants it, according to MLB.com. "There's very little room to put someone in, in my opinion, if you're healthy," Hendry said Saturday. "I would think that for the most part if we did something it would be reaction to a health issue more than feeling our people weren't capable of doing their job."

Our View: The Cubs were believed to be in the market for a relief pitcher (namely Brian Fuentes from Colorado), but the move to call up rookie Jeff Samardzija may have answered those questions. He made his Major League debut on Friday, and was firing 96-98-mph fastballs with movement, something that Cubs manager Lou Piniella is looking for. The concern is whether Kerry Wood can bounce back from a nagging blister on his right hand. Wood, who has not pitched since July 11, was going to try to throw a side session on Sunday. He's been throwing changeups on the side so as not to aggravate the blister. He can come off the DL on Tuesday, but needs to also show the Cubs that he still has the arm strength.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 7/25, 8:04 AM CT
Cubs' GM Jim Hendry hopes Kerry Wood can return from the DL Tuesday when eligible during an important series against the Brewers, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Carlos Marmol is handling the closer's role until Wood is ready to return. The Cubs only have a one game lead in the NL Central over the Brewers, who have won eight straight games.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 7/24, 7:12 PM CT
Kerry Wood was placed on the 15-day DL as the blister on his right index finger failed to heal, according to the AP. The team will make an adjoining move on Friday.

Our View: This is the 12th stint on the DL for Wood. MLB rules state that a player may be backdated on the DL no more than 10 days, meaning Wood would be eligible to be activated on Tuesday, and could spend as few as five days on the DL. Carlos Marmol will assume the closer's role while Wood is out.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 7/24, 9:26 AM CT
Kerry Wood was limited to changeups in his bullpen session on Wednesday according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: General Manager Jim Hendry continues to explore the market for trades, evaluating Oakland right-hander Huston Street and Colorado lefty Brian Fuentes, among others. But the guy apparently getting the most immediate consideration is Jeff Samardzija, the former Notre Dame receiver who is pitching well as a starter for Triple-A Iowa.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 7/23, 8:38 PM CT
Kerry Wood's blister is not healing as quickly as hoped, so he will visit a hand specialist on Thursday, according to MLB.com. "He's not capable of throwing a full bullpen where he throws his fastball, throws his slider," manager Lou Piniella said. "I think that would send him totally backwards."

Our View: Wood hasn't appeared in a game since July 11th, but given that he hasn't even been able to throw a complete bullpen since, there is obviously a growing likelihood that he will end up on the DL. Carlos Marmol will continue to fill in until Wood is healthy enough to return.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 7/23, 9:30 AM CT
Kerry Wood is scheduled to throw on the side today as he tries to bounce back from a finger blister, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Following the session, the Cubs hope to have a better idea as to when he may return. He could still be facing a short stint on the DL if his ailment looks like it will persist into the four-game set with Florida that starts Thursday.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 7/21, 9:27 PM CT
Kerry Wood will avoid the DL, for now. The closer is putting ointment on his blister and hopes to throw on Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Our View: Why didn't they bring out this magic ointment on July 12, one day after Kerry's last appearance? Carlos Marmol is in line to close for as long as Wood is out.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 7/21, 10:56 AM CT
Kerry Wood is likely headed to the DL due to a blister on his right index finger, according to the AP. He would be going to the DL for the 12th time in his career.

Our View: He hasn't pitched since June 11, and the Cubs would be able to put Wood on the DL retroactive to July 12, meaning he could miss only a week. Carlos Marmol is expected to handle the closer's role while Wood is out.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 7/19, 7:31 PM CT
The blister on Kerry Wood's right index finger could force the closer to the DL, according to MLB.com. "With Woody, the news wasn't good," manager Lou Piniella said. "He threw today, and he's still not ready, so we're going to ride this thing out as long as we can and hope that we'll get some good results from it a few days from now. We'll close with either [Carlos] Marmol or [Bob] Howry."

Our View: Well, at least Kerry isn't having elbow problems or anything. Still, blister problems can linger, and the Cubbies won't rush Wood back.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 7/14, 8:37 AM CT
Kerry Wood noted that the All-Star break should give him enough time for his finger blister to heal, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He plans to do some throwing to keep his shoulder loose but won't grip a ball with the affected finger.

Our View: Wood has locked down 24 saves this season, with 55 strikeouts over 44.2 innings of work. Hopefully he can stay healthy in the second half as the Cubs continue their run at the postseason.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 7/12, 8:17 PM CT
Reports indicate Chicago closer Kerry Wood is likely to miss this year's All Star Game, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Wood is nursing a blister on his throwing hand and has no desire to make matters worse. Wood still plans to attend All-Star festivities at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night. It was unclear whether he'll be replaced on the National League roster because the commissioner's office, as of Saturday night, had yet to be officially notified of Wood's injury. Wood's blister is on his right index finger, leaving him unavailable Saturday during Chicago's 8-7, 11-inning victory over San Francisco.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 7/11, 5:32 PM CT
Kerry Wood picked up his 24th save of the season, despite walking a batter and giving up two hits. The Giants scored their only run of the game in the inning.

Our View: Wood has given up four earned runs in his last three innings pitched.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 7/5, 6:41 PM CT
Kerry Wood was saddled with his second loss and fifth blown save on Saturday against the Cardinals. Wood walked two batters, then gave up a double and then a single to blow the game.

Our View: Wood has been one of the better closers in baseball this season, but eventually everyone eventually throws a stinker out there. Consider this outing to be one of those, and look for a strong comeback effort next time out for Wood.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 6/8, 10:39 PM CT
Chicago reliever Kerry Wood pitched well once again, picking up his 18th save of the season in the Cubs 3-1 victory over the Dodgers. Woods needed just 11 pitches to close the ninth, striking out two with one fly out.

Our View: That's five consecutive saves for Wood with two walks and six strikeouts during that span. Take it back to May 1: 13 saves, five walks, 26 strikeouts, five earned runs allowed (three on May 1).
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 6/4, 12:58 AM CT
Chicago closer Kerry Wood picked up his 16th save of the season as the Cubs wrapped a 9-6 win over the Padres, working the ninth with two strikeouts and one flyout on the night.

Our View: As we noted yesterday, Wood is working well but the Cubs are becoming disturbingly reliant on his arm. He now has seven appearances in the Cubs' last nine games with nine relief spots over their last 12. With his history of arm troubles, this should be a concern.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 6/3, 12:26 AM CT
Kerry Wood picked up his 15th save of the season on Monday night after Carlos Marmol allowed the Padres to close the score to 7-6. The closer came in to record the final two outs.

Our View: Wood has been steadier than expected as the closer, but we hope the Cubs are watching his workload. The oft-injured hurler has taken the hill in six of the last eight games and in eight of the previous 11 contests.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 5/26, 5:51 PM CT
Kerry Wood earned his 11th save of the season when the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 Monday.

Our View: Wood has had an up-and-down season. However, his lines suggest he's been the subject of some bad luck. The hard-throwing right-hander has a 0.82 WHIP, an 8.77 K/9 ratio and a 1.75 Walk Rate. All of these indicate that his expected ERA is less than his actual 3.51 number.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/25, 2:20 PM CT
Kerry Wood blew his fourth save of the season on Saturday but skipper Lou Piniella stands behind him and Wood is not in danger of losing his closer's job, according to MLB.com. Piniella said, "The only thing that Woody has to do is, he's hit the first hitter three times in the ninth inning, and it's tough enough doing the closer's job without putting yourself in trouble. We have to figure out how to help him not do that. Woody's got a job here, that's his role. I'm comfortable with it. I've got confidence in him, and he's got to go out and do it. That's it."

Our View: If the Cubs needed a closer on Sunday in the series finale against the Pirates, Carlos Marmol would get the call because he is the freshest. Piniella used seven pitchers on Saturday, and Wood went two innings, throwing 34 pitches. Marmol will not be replacing Wood as the regular Cubs' closer, however.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 5/24, 11:14 PM CT
Kerry Wood blew his fourth save of the season Saturday night, allowing a game-tying sacrifice fly in the ninth. The Pirates went on to beat the Cubs in the 14th.

Our View: The four blown saves aren't good, but Wood's other numbers on the year are still quite salty. He's not in danger of losing the closer role, despite how dominant Carlos Marmol has been.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/18, 4:27 PM CT
Kerry Wood pushed his save total to 10 with a scoreless ninth inning that included two strikeouts.

Our View: Carlos Marmol rebounded from a rough outing to also hurl a scoreless inning to set up Wood. This duo is shaping up to be one of the better backends in the NL, and who would have thought that five weeks ago?
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 5/15, 4:34 PM CT
Kerry Wood finished off a great start by Ryan Dempster to preserve a 4-0 shutout victory over the Padres. Wood stuck out both batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Our View: Wood now has 20 K in 20.2 IP with only four walks. As long as he keeps throwing strikes at that rate, there should be little stopping him from being one of the better closers in the NL, provided he can stay healthy of course.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/11, 5:46 PM CT
Kerry Wood pitched a perfect ninth inning on Sunday to earn his seventh save in 10 chances, and finish off Chicago's three-game sweep of NL West leading Arizona.

Our View: Wood has settled down after a rocky start. The former starter blew his first opportunity of the season and two in the first week of the regular season schedule.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 5/10, 11:38 AM CT
Kerry Wood decided to re-grip his slider and not rip it so hard, and he shut down Arizona's hitters by throwing nothing but strikes with his new and improved slider, according to the Daily Herald. Wood struck out Chris Young on three pitches, then forced 0-2 groundouts from Conor Jackson and Justin Upton to wrap up the Cubs' 3-1 victory on Friday. Wood said, "I didn't have a lot of confidence in my slider the way I've been throwing it. So I kind of tinkered with the grip playing catch out in Cincinnati before that series started. Honestly, it was a real small change. I feel more comfortable, so I can command it a little better. I'm going to stick with it."

Our View: Wood has been inconsistent this season, but perhaps his simple adjustment on his slider will help. He was certainly impressive on Friday. Wood lowered his season WHIP to 0.78, and has six saves for the season.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 5/9, 5:02 PM CT
Kerry Wood earned his sixth save of the year in Friday's 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

Our View: Wood, has been as inconsistent as any closer in the league, but has yet to catch some of the national criticism as has Eric Gagne. All indications have Wood solidly planted in the closer role and Carlos Marmol as his setup man.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 5/1, 4:24 PM CT
Kerry Wood suffered his third blown save of the season, and his first loss, by allowing three runs to the Brewers in the ninth inning.

Our View: Those Carlos Marmol whispers are growing. Wood has 13 K and only three BB in 14 innings, and he has only been scored on in three of 13 outings, so he should be able to hang on to the closers role moving forward. You didn't think it would be a smooth ride with Wood did you?
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 4/18, 5:03 PM CT
Kerry Wood pitched a perfect ninth inning on Friday to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Our View: Wood has nine K in 10 innings, and more importantly he has walked only two batters on the season in what has been a great start to his career as a closer.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 4/13, 5:02 PM CT
Kerry Wood picked up a win on Sunday, but the bigger news may be that he worked two innings for the first time all season. Wood worked the eighth and ninth innings in a tie game against the Phillies. Bob Howry came on after the Cubs scored in the 10th and earned the save.

Our View: Fantasy owners shouldn't read anything into Howry getting the save, as Wood worked through a critical period of the game. We thought they might protect Kerry by only asking him to work one inning per outing, but we suppose it's good news if his arm can take on more.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 4/9, 12:44 PM CT
Kerry Wood will be available to pitch today, according to MLB.com. He got Monday off, but is ready to go if needed. He is notably 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 4/7, 12:53 PM CT
Kerry Wood will get the day off on Monday, even if there is a save opportunity. "We're just trying to be a little prudent," manager Lou Piniella tells MLB.com. The Cubs are off on Tuesday, which gives Wood two days to rest his arm. Carlos Marmol will work the ninth if necessary on Monday.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 4/5, 3:44 PM CT
Kerry Wood picked up his second save of the season today, closing a 9-7 victory for the Cubs over the Astros. Wood faced three batters in the ninth, throwing 12 pitches (8 for strikes) to induce two ground outs and one on the fly. Wood still has the horrific outing against Milwaukee of last week to overcome (allowing three earned runs on two hits), but today is a step in the right direction.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 4/3, 4:46 PM CT
Kerry Wood second outing as the Cubs closer went much better than the first. He pitched a scoreless ninth Thursday to pick up his first save of the year, allowing one hit while striking out a pair. Wood has good enough stuff to succeed in the closer role, but whether he can stay healthy and pitch on back-to-back days are questions that need to be answered.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 3/31, 6:53 PM CT
Kerry Wood's debut as the Cubs closer didn't work out like the home team would have liked. Wood blew a three-run ninth-inning lead, giving up three runs on two hits, while walking and striking out one. One outing won't cost Wood his ninth inning role, but this is not the start fantasy owners wanted to see from their mid-round pitcher.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 3/26, 6:33 PM CT
Kerry Wood had a strong outing against the Angels on Wednesday as he held the team hitless over 1.2 innings of work, with two strikeouts. He is penciled in as the Cubs closer, but remains a fantasy risk due to his injury history.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 3/24, 12:54 PM CT
As expected, Lou Piniella announced Monday morning that Kerry Wood has won the closer's job over Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry, this according to the Chicago Tribune. Wood will pick up steam in the final week of fantasy drafts, but is his history of injuries, and the quality of competition behind him, makes him no lock to retain the role for the entire season.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 3/24, 11:23 AM CT
According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Cubs settled one bullpen issue Sunday, with Kerry Wood locking down the closer job. While skipper Lou Piniella has yet to officially announce who his ninth inning option will be, it is widely speculated that Wood is that arm. He now becomes a mid-round option in all mixed-league formats.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 3/24, 8:23 AM CT
The decision on who will be the Cubs' closer is supposed to announced today, this according to the Daily Herald. Kerry Wood threw a scoreless inning in a 7-3 victory over the San Diego Padres and is expected to be announced the ninth inning option for the team.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 3/23, 7:34 AM CT
Kerry Wood struck out two of the three batters he faced on Saturday in the Cubs' 8-8 tie with the White Sox and will throw one inning on Sunday against San Diego, which is believed to be his final test of the spring to be the team's closer, according to MLB.com. Manager Piniella commented, "This will be a real nice test for him, because he'll pitch back-to-back days and three out of four days, and that's as good a test as you can give anybody. Hopefully he'll come out of it fine, and we're in business."
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 3/19, 1:15 PM CT
Kerry Wood was unable to pitch on Wednesday due to back spasms, MLB.com reports. "It's a little bit of a setback but nothing, nothing serious," manager Lou Piniella explains. "It's a minor thing he goes through every spring." Wood was scheduled to throw on Wednesday and Thursday and prove that he could work on back-to-back days. "With Kerry, I was looking forward to seeing him pitch today and tomorrow, and getting that obstacle out of the way, but now we'll have to wait a couple days," Piniella concludes.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 3/18, 9:29 PM CT
In what may be the final test between the former star of the starting rotation and the job as the Cubs' primary closer, Kerry Wood is expected to pitch back-to-back closing sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Associated Press. Wood has enjoyed solid performances as the primary option of late-inning relief and has recently surged as the lone arm of consistency in that battle for the job. Earlier this week, manager Lou Piniella spoke highly of Wood's work in the role and, while he left the door open to change his mind, anointed Wood as the top candidate for the role. Now he will be asked to perform that final task that could sell Piniella on the decision.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 3/18, 12:27 PM CT
According to Jay Mariotti of the Chicago Sun-Times, Kerry Wood is expected to be anointed as the team's closer sometime soon. The report notes that Carlos Marmol, who has the stuff necessary to be an dominant closer, lacks experience. Wood has looked sharp lately, shaking off a slow start, and registering 98 MPH on the gun with his fastball. Wood will pick up steam with this report, but until skipper Lou Piniella actually makes the move, and announces Wood as the ninth inning option, owners should not overpay for his services.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 3/16, 7:33 AM CT
Cubs manager Lou Piniella appears to be leaning towards using Kerry Wood as his closer, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "To me, the two setup roles are just as important as the closer role," Piniella said. "In fact, they are probably a little more demanding in getting up and getting warmed up and being used as opposed to pitching basically the ninth inning. The closer has a tough job in that the game is in his hands when he gets out there. But, boy, I'll tell you, the seventh- and eighth-inning pitchers work a heck of a lot more." You can infer from that statement that the oft-injured Wood would be better suited in the physically less-demanding role of closer. Piniella plans to begin using his closer candidates -- Wood, Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry -- on consecutive days this week, and their performances likely will dictate which way Piniella goes in the end.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 3/11, 8:15 PM CT
In a game that saw all three candidates hit the field, today's 6-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics served as another in a growing saga that is the competition for the role of primary closer for the Chicago Cubs. Kerry Wood served as the most efficient arm of the three, according to MLB.com, giving up one hit to three batters with no walks and no strikeouts. Bob Howry, carrying an ERA of 11.57 this spring, surrendered two runs on two hits in just 2/3 of an inning. Carlos Marmol gave up one hit and one walk while striking out the side. Coach Lou Piniella insists this decision has not been made and will take more time. He has voiced nothing but understanding support for Howry despite the struggles, but none of the three seems to sit as the favorite for the job and there is a chance all three could be used in a committee effort.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 3/5, 9:36 PM CT
Kerry Wood looked really strong on Tuesday as his slider was sharp and his fastball was clocked at 98 MPH, this according to a report on MLB.com. "[The ball] was coming out of his hand really well and really alive," manager Lou Piniella said. Wood is still in the mix at closer for the Cubs, so continue to monitor the situation closely as your draft aproaches.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 2/28, 9:31 AM CT
Bob Howry, Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol start their competition today for the closer's spot, according to the Chicago Tribune. Skipper Lou Piniella told the paper he would like to have a closer picked out by the third week of the Cactus League schedule. He's not going to go with a closer-by-committee, and he wants his eventual ninth inning option to keep the job the entire season.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 2/21, 7:51 PM CT
Kerry Wood, Carlos Marmol and Bobby Howry will all battle for the team's closers role, and at this point, there really seems to be an opening for all three men to compete equally for the spot according to MLB.com. "Whether it's Kerry, whether it's Howry, whether it's Marmol, these guys are all capable of doing it," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. It's really coin flip to try and decide how this will play itself out, so tread lightly with selecting any of these three hurlers too early as there is no telling who will end up with the ball in their hand with the game on the line in the 9th inning.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 2/15, 9:28 AM CT
Kerry Wood, Carlos Marmol and Bobby Howry will compete this spring for the closer job, but indications are that Wood is the favorite to land the gig, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wood told the Tribune Thursday he didn't know if it took a different mentality to be the closer. "I never pitched the ninth inning, [other than] the last inning of the season, when I gave up a 500-foot homer," he said, referring to Stephen Drew's blast in Game 3 of The NLDS. "Obviously, it's different and there's a different mind-set, but any time you're late in the game, I think it's important." We think Marmol would be the better choice for the Cubbies, but Wood certainly is capable of succeeding in the role - assuming he stays healthy.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 2/14, 9:58 AM CT
The Cubs plan to settle on a closer by late March, and manager Lou Piniella plans to pick one guy and stick with him, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. ''We'll have one guy,'' Piniella said. ''By the end of spring training, no question. Probably three-quarters of the way through spring training, we'll have one guy. We've got people here that are very capable of getting it done.'' Kerry Wood, Carlos Marmol, and Bobby Howry are the prime candidates for ninth-inning duty on the north side of Chicago, but Piniella isn't ruling out Ryan Dempster returning to the role if he doesn't win a job in the starting rotation. Dempster, Jason Marquis, Jon Lieber, Sean Marshall and possibly Kevin Hart are batting it out for the final two spots in the Cubs' rotation.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 11/26, 12:43 PM CT
The Cubs have brought Kerry Wood back with a one-year, $4.2 million deal. He can make an additional $3.45 million in incentives. Wood held a 3.33 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 24 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings in 2007. He came back as a reliever after missing the first four months of the season with shoulder and triceps problems. Wood is expected to compete for the closer role in '08.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 8/5, 10:05 PM CT

Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 8/1, 10:25 PM CT
The Cubs will likely activate Kerry Wood from the DL on Friday. He has been on the DL since the start of the regular season with tendinitis in his right shoulder. "I got back in the big leagues. The work hasn't even begun," Wood said in the AP Wednesday, the day after his final minor league rehab stint in which he pitched 1 2-3 hitless innings for Double-A Tennessee.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 7/29, 9:52 PM CT
Kerry Wood threw an encouraging bullpen session on Sunday. Manager Lou Piniella said the right-hander might need only two or three more rehab appearances before he's ready to join the Cubs bullpen, according to the AP. "It's like trading for a pitcher," Piniella said. Wood has been on the DL since the start of the regular season with tendinitis in his right shoulder.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 7/29, 7:01 AM CT
Kerry Wood could come off the disabled list within a week. He likely will work an inning or two for Triple-A Iowa early next week, and if all goes well, it looks like he could be called up by the Cubs next weekend, according to the Chicago Tribune. Considering his endless health problems, nothing will ever be certain about Wood, but for the moment things appear to be going well in his rehab from a strained right triceps and sore shoulder.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 7/27, 10:12 PM CT
Kerry Wood had a strong final outing for Single-A Peoria on Friday, striking out one and retiring all three batters he faced. "Kerry looked terrific tonight, as clean as you'd want to see after back-to-back outings," Cubs GM TJim Hendry said at news conference following Wood's appearance. "His fastball was right at 92 to 93 mph. He had good command and he threw some really good breaking balls." The Cubs are expected to move Wood up to Triple-A Iowa immediately if he feels no ill effects from this week's outings.

Our View: He's still a ways away from returning to Chicago, but he could be pitching out of the bullpen before the end of the season.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 7/26, 10:30 AM CT
Kerry Wood is scheduled to make back-to-back appearances for Single-A Peoria on Thursday and Friday. If all goes well, Wood could move up to Triple-A Iowa, the Chicago Tribune reports. Wood is recovering from shoulder and triceps problems.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 7/24, 11:40 PM CT
Kerry Wood walked a batter and didn't record a strikeout during a brief one-inning relief appearance in a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday, the AP reports. Wood's fastball topped out at 93 mph. He is expected to pitch back-to-back one-inning bullpen outings for the Chiefs on Thursday and Friday and, if those appearances are successful, Wood said the Cubs would reassess his situation. It's likely he would be moved up to Triple-A Iowa.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 7/14, 7:07 AM CT
Kerry Wood should pitch in a Rookie League game within a couple of days. "Get his feet wet," GM Jim Hendry told the Chicago Tribune. "And if that goes well, we'll continue with his rehab program the next couple of weeks ... Let's be guardedly optimistic. We've all been down this path before, but when he left here the last homestand, he had a little bounce in his step, and he has thrown well in Arizona since he left here." If all goes well, and that's a big "if," Wood could make his season debut for the Cubs early next month.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 6/26, 8:59 AM CT
Kerry Wood will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. It will be his first such activity since spring training. He has been sidelined all season due to shoulder problems. The Cubs have no timetable for his return, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 6/24, 6:59 AM CT
Kerry Wood still is limited to playing catch. There is no timetable for him to throw off a mound, according to the Daily Southtown. "We would love to have him back," manager Lou Piniella said. "This kid is trying everything humanly possible to try to get himself back on the playing field. Let's hope it works out for him. He's a good kid -- he really is." Nonetheless, Wood remains out indefinitely due to his strained right triceps and shoulder problem.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 4/26, 7:10 AM CT

Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 4/13, 9:15 AM CT

Kerry Wood still hasn't thrown from a mound as he continues to play catch as part of his rehab program in Arizona, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Wood is dealing with shoulder discomfort and it's unclear at this point just how long he'll be out.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 3/27, 9:14 AM CT
Kerry Wood is dealing with shoulder discomfort, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wood felt stiffness in the shoulder after Sunday's one-inning appearance. "He obviously didn't have the same strength or throw the ball as well, and he had some discomfort after the game," GM Jim Hendry said. "[Monday] he had more stiffness than normal, more than he's had earlier in camp, which had gone smoothly except for his triceps [injury]." Wood will begin the season on the DL, but it's unclear at this point just how long he'll be out.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 3/26, 6:59 AM CT
Kerry Wood hurt himself again on Sunday and will be examined further on Monday, according to the Daily Southtown. It's not clear whether he aggravated his strained right triceps, but any setback pretty much nixes any shot he had of starting the season on the Cubs' active roster.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 3/25, 10:32 PM CT
The Cubs have not yet decided whether or not Kerry Wood will open the season on the active roster or if he needs more time to build up his arm strength, according to the AP. Wood, who is recovering from a strained right triceps, has given up seven runs in five innings of work this spring.

Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 3/22, 7:04 AM CT

Wood, recovering from a strained right triceps, still might be ready for the start of the season.

Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 3/9, 8:02 AM CT
Kerry Wood allowed four runs in his one inning of work Thursday, with the runs coming on a Termel Sledge grand slam. On a positive note for Wood, he struck out the side. "I think I had better stuff this time than I did the last time," Wood told the Cubs official site. "My stuff was a little better this time. The results obviously weren't the same, but I felt I threw the ball very similar. The slider was better, the results weren't."
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 3/5, 8:40 PM CT
Kerry Wood pitched a perfect inning against Seattle in his spring debut on Monday, striking out one. The Cubs are converting Wood to relief this year in order to ease the stress on his shoulder, and he could be given a look in the closer role if the cards fall right.

Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 2/20, 8:50 AM CT
Kerry Wood threw 25 pitches off the mound Monday in his first prolonged throwing session since he hurt his chest after falling out of a hot tub last week, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Today was probably 80-85 percent [of normal velocity]," Wood said. "Once this chest thing becomes a non-issue and I get it completely out of the way, I'll be able to turn it up. But I was going full-out before I came to camp, so I was ready to go, and this thing has kind of slowed it down. I figure one or two more times off the mound and I should be ready to go."
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 2/18, 8:10 AM CT
Kerry Wood threw 10 pitches off a mound, his first action since slipping while getting out of a hot tub, according to the Chicago Tribune. "It was only 10 pitches, but the fact that he's on his legs tells me he feels good, arm-wise," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "When the [shoulder] injuries started cropping up, he didn't use his legs at all because he didn't want to create arm speed and cause problems. You can tell he has done a lot of work with balance." There's no truth to the rumors that the Cubs have surrounded Wood in bubble wrap to avoid more injuries.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 2/15, 10:28 PM CT
Kerry Wood is considered day-to-day after slipping while getting out of a hot tub at his home, the AP reports. Wood landed on his stomach and chest. "It was just a little spill," Wood said Thursday. "I didn't think anything of it. Nothing's wrong. It's just going to be a few extra days. My arm feels great. My body feels good." Wood said he probably would not have thrown off the mound until Friday had he not gotten hurt.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 11/12, 10:46 PM CT
The Cubs re-signed Kerry Wood to a one-year contract. The deal is worth $1.75 million but could reach $6 million with incentives. He is expected to become a full-time reliever, and one of his incentives is for games finished.
Kerry Wood, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 9/3, 7:11 AM CT
The Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs will decline their $13.5 million contract option on Kerry Wood this offseason.
