Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 9/16, 2:10 PM CT
Bartolo Colon has been released by the Chicago White Sox, according to the Twitter page of VP Scott Reifert. Colon won three games and finished with a 4.19 ERA with the team this season.

Our View: Colon hasn't had the rebound year he was hoping for, and it looks like his time as an effective major league starter is about up. He used to be an excellent fantasy pitcher, but it looks like he may never be fantasy relevant again.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 7/29, 2:10 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, the White Sox have placed hefty starter Bartolo Colon on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

Our View: With Colon going down, it looks as if Clayton Richard won't head to the bullpen after all. Left-hander Randy Williams will come up from Triple-A and fill the vacated roster spot. No timetable on how long Colon will be out.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 7/24, 8:51 PM CT
Bartolo Colon gave up three earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Friday's 4-3 loss at Detroit. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View: Colon was dealt a no-decision, but may have pitched well enough to earn another start in Chicago's rotation. The 36-year-old hurler is worth consideration for AL-only leagues.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 7/23, 6:41 PM CT
Bartolo Colon has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from left knee inflammation, according to the Associated Press. Carlos Torres was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte to make room on Chicago's roster.

Our View: Colon is expected to make his next start in Friday's doubleheader with the Tigers. The 36-year-old hurler could earn more starts if he fares well, and is worth a look as a flier for AL-only leagues.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 7/15, 9:27 AM CT
According to the Chicago Tribune, Bartolo Colon struck out eight in his second rehab assignment on Tuesday night.

Our View: Colon, on the DL since June 7th with knee inflammation, allowed just two runs over seven innings on Tuesday. He allowed seven hits in his Class-A rehab start and has now allowed three runs on nine total hits in his two outings. He is slated to pitch in Triple-A on Sunday and is expected to make one of the starts in the White Sox's doubleheader on July 24th.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 7/8, 8:37 PM CT
Bartolo Colon has been found. MLB.com reports that he has checked in with Triple-A Charlotte and will start for them on Thursday.

Our View: On the DL since June 7th with knee inflammation, Colon was rehabbing on his own in Arizona when the Sox lost track of him. Now that the White Sox have located him, manager Ozzie Guillen had this to say, "To talk to Colon, you've got to talk to 20 different people. You got to talk to 30 different cousins, and then to his agent, who talks to his brother, his brother call his wife, his wife say he's with Pedro, Pedro say he's with Juan," said Guillen, having a little fun with the subject. "I guarantee you I'll call [President Barack] Obama, and we'll have a talk before Colon answers the phone. Obama will put me on hold for one second. It's just the way he is."
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 7/7, 7:40 PM CT
Bartolo Colon is not with Triple-A Charlotte right now, and the veteran hurler did not inform the White Sox where he is, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Colon is scheduled to start Thursday's game with Charlotte, but even his agent does not know where he is. He has been rehabbing from right knee inflammation, and could be hurting his chance to return to Chicago if he does not return soon.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 7/6, 9:26 AM CT
According to the Chicago Tribune, White Sox' starter Bartolo Colon may not be in the team's plans for the second half of the season. Colon has been on the DL since early June with inflammation in his right knee.

Our View: Colon was expected to start a rehab stint in the minors recently, but manager Ozzie Guillen has not received any reports on his status. The team seems committed to rookie Clayton Richard in the rotation, so it looks like Colon may be out of luck. He should not be considered for fantasy duty in any format at this point.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 6/9, 4:24 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Bartolo Colon has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to swelling in his left knee according to the Chicago Tribune. The Sox were expected to make a move regarding Colon after they called up top prospect Aaron Poreda.

Our View: Colon has been solid, but highly unspectacular in 2009, especially recently. This DL trip, coupled with Poreda's promotion, probably puts an end to his fantasy relevancy for the season.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 6/9, 12:22 PM CT
After getting roughed up in three of his his last four starts, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Bartolo Colon will likely have his rotation spot taken by the recently called up Aaron Poreda.

Our View: Overall, Colon has had a decent 2009, going 3-6 with a 4.23 ERA. But he has been pitching progressively worse, and with the super talented Poreda waiting in the wings, the Sox obviously no longer see any reason to keep guessing every five days which Colon will show up. He is not worth holding onto should this move to come to fruition.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 6/7, 6:06 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was touched for six runs (five earned) in five innings on Sunday. Four of the eight hits he allowed left the yard and he was handed his sixth loss of the season as Chicago fell 8-4 to the Indians.

Our View: Colon held a 3.47 ERA for the month of May, but has been beat up in his two June starts. He's been good at times this season, but remains a risky fantasy play.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 6/7, 9:42 AM CT
Chicago GM Kenny Williams believes the Sox have a good enough team to win, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Williams said, "I think we have enough talent out there to win. Some people want to believe it. I believe it right now, and I will believe it until I say, 'You know what? I don't think we can do this. I think right now we have a good ballclub, especially with the way the division is playing out right now. We should be like 20 games out, and we are hanging in there. That is why I take a positive out of a negative."

Our View: The Sox are only 5-5 over their last 10 games, but are still only 3.5 games back in the AL Central standings. Bartolo Colon will take the hill today against the rival Indians, and he will be aiming for his fourth win of the season.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 6/1, 1:06 PM CT
According to the Chicago Tribune, Bartolo Colon's scheduled Monday start has been pushed to Tuesday. Gavin Floyd will pitch Monday for the Sox instead.

Our View: It's unclear why the switch was made, but be sure to change your lineup accordingly.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 5/27, 12:00 AM CT
Bartolo Colon picked up his third win of the year on Tuesday as the White Sox downed the Angels 4-2. Colon went 6.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out three.

Our View: Colon has been very hit or miss this season, but he was very good tonight. His inconsistency is keeping him from being a quality fantasy option, but he can be decent when he shows up. He is a risky play, but he could still be an AL-only pitcher in deeper leagues.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 5/21, 4:36 PM CT
Bartolo Colon got hammered on Thursday, but somehow emerged virtually unscathed. He allowed eight runs over two innings, but just one of them turned out to be earned. He dropped to 2-4 on the season as he allowed seven hits and two walks in his brief appearance on the mound.

Our View: Colon's 4.23 ERA could be much worse, but he caught a statistical break with all the earned runs on Thursday. He's a volatile option in fantasy leagues as he can turn in a good start every once in a while, but his propensity for getting rocked is far too great. If you start him, you're playing with fire.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 5/16, 3:48 PM CT
Bartolo Colon scattered five hits and two walks over five shutout innings on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision as Chicago fell 2-1 to the Blue Jays in the later innings.

Our View: Colon has been the epitome of hot and cold this season. He has three starts where he has not allowed a run, but his ERA is still 4.21. That's because he got shelled in three of his four other starts this season and has a very hard time going deeper than five innings. Tread with extreme caution.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 5/10, 4:07 PM CT
Bartolo Colon got roughed up on Sunday, going 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four. He is now 2-3 on the year.

Our View: This was Colon's second straight loss, but he was much worse today than he was in his last outing. Colon is an AL-only option, but he is risky in mixed leagues because of days like this.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 5/4, 9:59 PM CT
Bartolo Colon pitched pretty well on Monday, but he took the loss against the Royals. Colon went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out seven.

Our View: Tough break for Colon that he had to go against Greinke. He has pitched well as of late, and with the struggles of Jose Contreras he is assured of a rotation spot for the near future. He has established value in AL-only leagues, but it will take a few more starts like this to raise his value to mixed-league worthy.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 4/28, 6:28 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was very good on Tuesday, allowing zero earned runs over seven innings and striking out six in the White Sox 2-1 win over the Mariners. He allowed just four hits and a walk in the contest and earned his second win of the season.

Our View: Colon had a fine spring, but has been roughed up in the regular season. Manager Ozzie Guillen recently stated that despite his troubles, Colon would stay in the rotation. Maybe that got his engine going, because he was very good on Tuesday.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 4/25, 9:26 AM CT
Bartolo Colon and Jose Contreras will continue to operate out of the starting rotation despite less than ideal starts to the season, according to the Chicago Tribune. Manager Ozzie Guillen said the two "are my two guys until they tell me they can't go anymore."

Our View: Colon owns a 6.14 ERA and a pathetic 1.20 K/BB mark through three starts, and those are actually better numbers than those of Contreras (8.04 ERA, 0.82 K/BB). Neither guy is worth starting in AL-only leagues at the moment, and we wouldn't blame you at all if you showed less confidence in the duo than Guillen does. They have both been awful this season after posting solid numbers in spring.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 4/23, 10:24 PM CT
Bartolo Colon got ripped up on Thursday by the Orioles. He surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks before getting yanked after just three innings. H was handed his first loss of the year.

Our View: Colon had a great first start, but has been knocked around since. Expect more of the same for a while as he appears to just be pitching batting practice right now.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 4/11, 7:11 PM CT
Bartolo Colon had a brilliant start on Saturday against the Twins. He allowed just three hits and two walks over six innings and was credited with the victory in Chicago's 8-0 win.

Our View: Colon is an enigma. He could be anything from Cy Young-caliber to not worthy of the scrap heap. This season obviously could go either way, but this is definitely a promising start.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 4/7, 11:55 AM CT
Manager Ozzie Guillen notes that Jose Contreras will start on Friday against the Twins, and Bartolo Colon will take the mound on Saturday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Our View: Guillen is confirming that Colon is the No. 5 starter and Contreras is the No. 4 man. Yawn.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 4/4, 6:44 PM CT
Bartolo Colon rebounded from a terrible outing to throw five shutout innings in Saturday's 2-0 win over Arizona. He struck out five, one walk and thre hits in the relief appearance.

Our View: The Sox have not named their fifth starter yet, and Colon may have to make another start in their minor league camp before they trust him with the big league club. It's not impossible to imagine Colon having a few nice outings this season, but the likelihood of him making 30 starts is as slim as he is wide.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 3/30, 6:01 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was roughed up for 11 hits and seven earned runs in four innings of work during Monday's 13-3 loss to the Angels. He allowed two home runs and a walk while striking out one batter.

Our View: Colon's performance today was nearly opposite of the quality showing he put forth five days ago. He still needs to improve on his conditioning and build up his arm strength before the White Sox give him a spot in the rotation.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 3/25, 6:26 PM CT
Bartolo Colon tossed 4.1 scoreless innings on Wednesday and allowed only two hits while striking out four. He did not walk a man.

Our View: This certainly helps Colon's chances of cracking the starting rotation. He's always been an enigma from season to season, but when he's healthy and on his games he is very good. It's hard to go from Cy Young to dud, but Colon has proven that it isn't impossible. Wait and see if this is one of those golden years and then snatch him off the waiver wire.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 3/16, 7:10 PM CT
Bartolo Colon lasted just 1.2 innings in his spring debut against the Royals on Monday. He allowed four earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one.

Our View: Jose Contreras is ahead of Colon at this point in the spring. Colon has made no secret that he expects to be part of the rotation, but he will have to show a lot of improvement following today's performance.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 3/12, 5:29 PM CT
Bartolo Colon will make his spring debut Monday against Kansas City, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Colon has recovered nicely from surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow last fall and pitching coach Don Cooper said it's realistic that he could be a part of Chicago's starting rotation by the beginning of the season. If he looks good in spring training, the former Cy Young winner is one to keep an eye on in the later rounds of AL-only leagues.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 3/7, 4:13 PM CT
Bartolo Colon looked good in a 55-pitch session on Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Colon had bone chips removed from his elbow over the offseason but has been progressing well in his rehabilitation process. He should be ready to face live action in spring training sometime soon and could very well be able to enter the season in Chicago's starting rotation as the No. 4 or 5 starter.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 3/2, 10:14 PM CT
Bartolo Colon had his first spring throwing session off of a mound on Monday. He is battling back from offseason surgery to remove bone chips in his shoulder.

Our View: He will throw again on Wednesday and the team hopes he can throw in spring training games by the middle of the month. At this point, he probably won't be able to be a part of the opening day rotation, but it's possible.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 1/14, 6:45 PM CT
Fox Sports reports that the White Sox have signed Bartolo Colon to a one-year deal pending a physical. The vet with heft will likely compete for the fifth spot in their rotation.

Our View: Colon pitched one season with the White Sox in 2003 and he was mostly effective. He finished 15-13 with a 3.87 ERA over 242 innings. The 35-year-old started seven games for the Red Sox last season and was fairly effective in doing so. He went 4-2 with a 3.92 ERA. Should he have a strong spring training, he may be worth a look at for fantasy purposes. However, he has not made more than 18 starts in a season since 2005.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 9/25, 4:32 PM CT
The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have placed Bartolo Colon on the restricted list, ending his suspension.

Our View: The Globe did not mention if that meant Colon has returned to the team. He had been upset that he was being restricted to bullpen duty and effectively quit on the team to go back home to the Dominican Republic.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 9/20, 9:37 AM CT
Bartolo Colon was not put on the restricted list, as was reported earlier, according to the Boston Globe. However, he is still suspended without pay and is home in the Dominican Republic.

Our View: Colon was upset with being put in the bullpen, and he decided to leave the team. Because he is not on the restricted list, he is allowed to come back to the team, but that does not seem likely.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 9/19, 5:22 PM CT
The Bartolo Colon era is over according to the Boston Herald. He has decided that the bullpen was not where he belonged and he will stay in the Dominican Republic. The Red Sox put him on the restricted list — he is suspended, without pay.

Our View: Colon showed well, if not inconsistent, in 2008 in his mere seven appearances. He was 4-2 with a 3.92 ERA in seven starts. Expect him to turn up somewhere else other than Boston in 2009.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 9/18, 8:11 AM CT
Bartolo Colon headed to the Dominican Republic instead of throwing his side session Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He will rejoin the club tomorrow after dealing with some personal issues. His side session was to determine his pitching status, to either be used as a reliever or to throw simulated games.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 9/17, 8:14 AM CT
Bartolo Colon will throw a side session today and then be re-evaluated in Toronto, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Depending on the results, he will either be used out of the bullpen, or will throw simulated games, as there is no room for him in the rotation. He will hold little to no fantasy value the rest of the way in September.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 9/15, 7:52 AM CT
The team will discuss Bartolo Colon's role for the final two weeks of the season today and it does not appear likely that he will get another start in the rotation, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Colon does not like working out of the bullpen, but the team may ask him to serve as a reliever anyway. He looks to hold very little fantasy value for the remainder of 2008.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 9/13, 9:59 PM CT
Bartolo Colon allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings in Saturday's 7-5 win over Toronto in the second game of the doubleheader, with one walk and one strikeout. He exited the game trailing 5-2, and was dealt a no decision.

Our View: Colon did not pitch too poorly in his first outing since June, and is worth a look in deeper AL-only leagues with two weeks to go in the regular season.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 9/11, 8:31 AM CT
Bartolo Colon will pitch the nighcap of Saturday's doubleheader against Toronto, according to the Boston Globe. Paul Byrd is slated to pitch the first game.

Our View: Colon can handle Toronto, and should receive solid run support and defense from his teammates. He is worth a look in larger AL-only leagues for Saturday's start.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 9/9, 5:37 PM CT
The Red Sox have recalled pitcher Bartolo Colon from Triple-Pawtucket. He is scheduled to start one game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays.

Our View: Colon pitched pretty well in his last minor league start (Sept. 1), but the Red Sox lineup is the best thing going for Bartolo at this point. Fantasy owners should only pick him up if they are desperate for wins.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 9/7, 1:19 PM CT
The Red Sox activated Colon (neck) from the 60-day DL and optioned him to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Our View: He is on schedule to pitch one game of Boston's doubleheader on September 13.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 9/3, 9:24 AM CT
The Boston Globe believes Bartolo Colon is on track to start one of the two games against Toronto September 13.

Our View: Colon will make one more rehab start in the minors, likely Saturday for Pawtucket or Portland, both of which are in the playoffs. He is feeling good and believes everything is fine, regarding his recovery from a stiff back.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 9/1, 7:06 PM CT
Bartolo Colon (back) hurled six innings of four hit ball for the Red Sox on Monday, according to the Boston Herald. Colon allowed one run in the outing though he only struck out one batter.

Our View: The team would like Colon to make one more appearance in the minors before being activated to help the club with their playoff push down the stretch.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 9/1, 8:21 AM CT
Bartolo Colon will make another rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, and the Red Sox may be looking at him to make a start on September 13 when Boston plays a doubleheader with the Blue Jays.

Our View: Colon has been good in the minors, going 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA while walking only five in 25.2 innings. He could be a nice addition to AL-only teams who need a shot in the arm.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 8/28, 9:39 AM CT
Bartolo Colon struggled Tuesday in his last rehab outing, but is scheduled for another one Sunday with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He may only be able to last 75 pitches if recalled to the Red Sox, but manager Terry Francona noted that the bullpen wouldn't be compromised when rosters expand in September. He should remain held on rosters in larger AL-only leagues.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 8/22, 6:59 AM CT
Bartolo Colon, who is recovering from back stiffness, did not allow a hit over four inning's in Thursday's rehab outing with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the AP. Manager Ron Johnson said, "I thought his velocity’s getting back up to where it was. He’s not there yet as compared with where he was when he was with us early in the year. But that’s to be expected because he hasn’t been out there that many times. He just looked crisp to me." He topped out at 90 mph on the radar gun, consistently threw in the 88-89 range.

Our View: Colon will make another rehab start on Tuesday at Lehigh Valley and will increase his pitch count to five or six innings and 60-65 pitches.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 8/16, 12:03 AM CT
Bartolo Colon left his rehab outing after one inning Friday due to illness, according to MLB.com. "He pitched one full inning, and he got sick," manager Terry Francona said. "That's all I have right now. We'll get more."

Our View: Give that Colon's daily caloric intake is probably in the vicinity of 20,000, we're not surprised his tummy got a little upset. We'll let you know when he plans to get back on the mound.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 8/15, 8:05 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was supposed to work four innings, or 55-60 pitches, for Triple-A Pawtucket Friday, but he lasted just one inning before exiting, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: It's not known why Bartolo exited, but the best bet would be because of his back, which is why he's on the DL. We'll update you on his status when more is known.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 8/11, 11:09 AM CT
Bartolo Colon has left Pawtucket to attend to his ailing father in the Dominican Republic, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Colon is expected to re-join Pawtucket on Friday in Syracuse.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 8/10, 8:08 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw well in his rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket, going three innings and allowing no runs while throwing 27 of his 34 pitches for strikes, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Colon was awful in his first rehab start, so this was a marked improvement. He should be able to give fantasy owners, at least in AL-only leagues, a boost to their squad.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 8/10, 8:46 AM CT
Bartolo Colon, who is recovering from back stiffness, is scheduled to throw his second rehab outing today for Pawtucket, according to the Boston Globe. Hopefully he will have a solid outing, as he didn't get out of the first inning in his first appearance.

Our View: If he can find his form soon and return to Boston, he could provide fantasy depth down the stretch.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 8/5, 7:57 PM CT
Bartolo Colon only lasted 0.2 innings and 32 pitches in his Triple-A rehab start on Tuesday night. He allowed four hits and three runs, including a two-run homer. Colon had been set to work two full innings as he recovers from a lower back strain.

Our View: Colon was making his first outing since June 16, so we'll cut him a little slack. Sadly, the after-game snack table will probably be bare by the time the rest of the Pawtucket players get there.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 8/5, 3:23 PM CT
Boston Red Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon will make a rehab start for Class AAA Pawtucket on Tuesday, according to PA Sports Ticker.

Our View: Colon will make his first game appearance since he strained his back on June 16.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 8/2, 4:21 PM CT
Bartolo Colon, who is recovering from back stiffness, is set to make a rehab start with Triple-A Pawtucket Tuesday, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: It will mark his first game appearance since June 16, when he strained his back at Philadelphia. Barring a setback, he could return to the Sox at some point in mid-August, and is worth keeping stashed away in AL-only leagues.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 7/30, 5:26 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw on the side on Wednesday and will throw again on Saturday, according to the Providence Journal. If he avoids a setback he could head out on a rehab assignment next week.

Our View: Colon could serve like a trade deadline addition that could offer a big boost to the Red Sox rotation, that is if he can keep his weight below 300 lbs by avoiding the buffet table.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 7/27, 11:44 PM CT
Bartolo Colon, on the disabled list since June 17 with a stiff lower back, plans to throw on the side Monday. He threw 35 pitches in his previous side session.

Our View: Colon is still a long ways from coming back. He will likely have a few starts in the minors before seeing action in Boston again. Don't expect to see him in the majors before mid-August.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 7/22, 8:15 AM CT
Bartolo Colon, who is trying to recover from back stiffness, is scheduled to throw a side sesssion on Thursday, according to the Boston Globe. He played catch on Monday without any issues.

Our View: He will be out until late July or possibly into August as the club remains cautious with him. The Red Sox are not counting on him for this season, and neither should fantasy owners.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 7/17, 9:17 AM CT
Bartolo Colon has slowly resumed his pitching program following his bout with a strained oblique, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The team will continue to be cautious with him, and is aware that he cannot be counted on. He will be out until late July, and possibly into August.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 7/9, 3:10 PM CT
Bartolo Colon will back off his rehab schedule due to a strained oblique, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona said Colon was throwing from 120-130 feet and felt uncomfortable so Colon will take Thursday off and do light throwing Friday and Saturday. Francona added, "I think we felt like we're fighting. We didn't want to go this route because it's not the right thing to do. We have the All-Star break coming up so we're just going to back him off a couple days."

Our View: It now appears that Colon will be out at least until late July, and possibly into August.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 7/5, 2:40 PM CT
Bartolo Colon has been playing catch from 120 feet and may be able to throw off a mound early next week, The Providence Journal reports. He is on the DL due to a back strain.

Our View: This news would suggest that Colon is still likely a couple weeks away from returning. We'll continue to follow his progress and maybe he can rejoin the rotation after the All-Star break.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 6/24, 5:37 PM CT
Bartolo Colon is still a week away from beginning a throwing program, according to Jeff Goldberg of the Courant News.

Our View: Because it's a back injury that is keeping Colon sidelined, expect Boston to wait longer than usual to bring the starter back.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 6/17, 2:59 PM CT
Bartolo Colon has been placed on the 15-day DL due to stiffness in his lower back, according to the Boston Globe. The Red Sox have recalled righthander Chris Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his spot on the roster.

Our View: Colon swung a little too hard at a Cole Hamels changeup last night in inter-league play against the Phillies, which caused his back to stiffen up.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 6/16, 8:13 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was forced from his start on Monday against the Phillies with back stiffness, according to the Associated Press. Colon allowed six hits, two walks and four runs before exiting the game in which he picked up his second loss of the season.

Our View: Colon had all kinds of control issues tonight as his four seam fastball was darting all over the place leading to a bunch of his pitches leaking out over the plate. If this ends up being a DL type injury, Justin Masterson would likely be left in the rotation even when Daisuke Matsuzaka returns from injury.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 6/15, 11:32 AM CT
Bartolo Colon has pitched well since being called up from Pawtucket, but he's also and injury risk for those who are counting on him for the long haul this summer. His 6.8 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 are over-the-top good, and his velocity is where it was during a stellar stretch early last year with the Angels.

Our View: He has won four of his first five starts, but the Boston offense isn't what it was without David Ortiz, and the unit has been pedestrian on the road. Counting on Colon to stay healthy, and get the offensive support he has in his first five starts is asking a lot. Selling high, or at least finding what the market will bare, would be advised.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 6/11, 9:09 PM CT
Boston RHP Bartolo Colon improved to 4-1 this evening with a 6-3 win over Baltimore, pitching six innings to allow just one run on five hits, surrendering one walk and seven strikeouts.

Our View: Colon won his first three starts with a combined seven earned runs allowed with five walks and 13 strikeouts. Tonight was his most dominating performance yet and has fans in Boston happy with the gamble laid on the aging veteran.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 6/1, 4:50 PM CT
Bartolo Colon won his third straight game in as many starts and the Boston Red Sox found their lost offense this weekend at the expense of the Baltimore Orioles in a 9-4 victory Sunday. The former Cy Young winner allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out five in six innings of work.

Our View: After Colon's first three performances, there is little chance that Clay Buchholz will return to the Boston rotation unless the staff suffers an untimely injury. In fact Justin Masterson, who is in line for two starts this week with Dice-K on the disabled list, might have surpassed Buchholz on the minor league depth chart.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 5/26, 11:50 PM CT
Bartolo Colon shut down Seattle for seven innings helping the Red Sox to a 5-3 win over the Mariners on Monday night. Colon allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out four.

Our View: The win was Colon's second in two starts since being called up, and at least for now he's a fixture in the Red Sox rotation. Expect Clay Buchholz to remain in Pawtucket until the team needs a spot starter or injury replacement.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 5/24, 11:35 AM CT
Bartolo Colon threw a side session on Friday and reported no ill effects, and as a result he will start on Monday against Seattle, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Colon will be kept on a 90-95 pitch count as he continues to build up arm strength, but he lines up as a two-time starter this week and for those of you in head to head leagues, he could be a decent pickup off waivers.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 5/21, 9:37 PM CT
Bartolo Colon picked up the win Wednesday in his first start with the Red Sox, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings.

Our View: Not a great performance, but certainly respectable. Colon should be able to work deeper into games once he gets builds up arm strength.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 5/21, 12:29 PM CT
Bartolo Colon has been called up and will make his season debut in the Red Sox rotation tonight against the Royals, according to the USA Today. Young hurler Justin Masterson was sent down to Triple-A Pawtuckett to make room for Colon.

Our View: Colon is back, but shouldn't be considered for your rotation until he proves he can still be effective. He held a poor 6.34 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 18 starts in 2007.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 5/19, 8:25 AM CT
Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced his starting pitchers on Sunday for Tuesday and Wednesday against the Royals, this according to the team website. Bartolo Colon, the 2005 American League Cy Young Award winner who signed a Minor League contract with Boston in February, will make his Sox debut on Wednesday, coming up from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Our View: Right-hander Justin Masterson will make his second start for the Red Sox on Tuesday, coming up from Double-A Portland.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 5/16, 8:21 AM CT
Bartolo Colon is still one more start away from a major league call-up, this according to the Boston Herald. Colon, who can opt out of his contract if he is not called up by June 1, pitched six scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory at Buffalo yesterday. He allowed just one hit, walked none and struck out four. Not working in the right-hander’s favor, however, was his pitch total. He threw just 64

Our View: That means the Red Sox will look to other in-house solutions - David Pauley and Charlie Zink are two Triple-A possibilities - to fill the open starter’s spot in the rotation Tuesday against the Royals. Justin Masterson, who has already made one spot start for the Red Sox this season, has struggled of late. After allowing two runs in his first four minor league starts, Masterson has allowed 16 in his last four. The right-hander was battered for nine hits and seven runs in Double-A Portland’s 7-2 loss to Trenton last night. Assuming there are no more injuries between tonight and Tuesday, whoever does get called up would likely replace outfielder Jonathan Van Every.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 5/15, 6:27 PM CT
Bartolo Colon worked six fantastic innings for the Pawtucket Sox on Thursday, according to MLB.com. Colon held the Buffalo Bisons to just one hit while throwing a fastball that reached 95 mph as he needed just 64 pitches to complete the six innings.

Our View: It's not clear if the Sox will leave Colon in the minors to build up some more arm strength, but they could call him up to fill the #5 spot in the rotation to make two starts next week. Stay tuned.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 5/11, 1:43 PM CT
Bartolo Colon worked three innings on Saturday night. It was his first start since coming off the minor league DL due to a strained oblique. Colon threw 49 pitches in the start, and the Sox hope he can work up to 76 pitches in his next outing, the Providence Journal reports.

Our View: Colon missed more than a month due to the ailment, which probably didn't earn him much love with the front office. He remains worth watching, but we're not expecting much help for fantasy leagues.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 5/7, 5:21 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw a side session on Wednesday for the Red Sox and is scheduled to throw three innings for the Pawtucket Sox on Saturday, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Colon has reportedly hit about 93 mph on the gun, which should be enough to allow him to have some success once he returns to the big leagues if he can locate his pitches. Still, he is a big-time risk to be anything more than a spot starter in AL Only leagues at the moment.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 5/5, 3:25 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw two innings in extended spring training in Sarasota, Florida, today, according to the Boston Globe. He threw 19 pitches during the game, then threw another 16 pitches in a bullpen session.

Our View: Colon is expected to rejoin the team in Detroit this week, but remains a fantasy risk due to his durability and uncertainty that he can still be effective in the majors. He held a poor 1.62 WHIP over 99.1 innings in 2007.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 5/1, 7:21 AM CT
Bartolo Colon has an opt-out clause in his contract that permits him to become a free agent if he wasn't on the big league roster by today, but a source indicated Colon will not exercise his right to leave Boston at this time, according to FanNation. Colon and the Red Sox reached an informal understanding that the opt-out date would be delayed until June 1.

Our View: The 2005 Cy Young Award winner remains a fantasy risk due to his durability and uncertainty that he can still be effective in the majors. He held a poor 1.62 WHIP over 99.1 innings in 2007.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 4/30, 10:53 AM CT
Bartolo Colon threw 35 pitches in the Fenway bullpen on Tuesday and will do so again today, according to the Boston Herald. With no lingering signs of the right oblique strain that surfaced April 6, Bartolo Colon is still on schedule to return to the Triple-A Pawtuckett rotation on Monday.

Our View: Colon remains a fantasy risk due to his durability and uncertainty that he can still be effective in the majors. He isn't worth waiting for. He held a poor 1.62 WHIP over 99.1 innings in 2007.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 4/25, 5:25 PM CT
According to the Providence Journal, pitcher Bartolo Colon (oblique) is on track to throw a side session in a couple of days. The report notes that the Red Sox staff has scheduled the right-hander to throw three side sessions prior to May 5. At that time there will be decisions in respect to the current out clause in Colon's minor league contract.

Our View: The best case scenario for Colon is he would be able to pitch in a game on or around May 5. The chances of that happening at this point are slim. The right-hander simply hasn't been healthy enough to show his abilities.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 4/23, 6:41 PM CT
Red Sox RHP Bartolo Colon is recovering as hoped from a strained oblique, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Colon threw from 120 feet today, and while he is now also battling the flu, he has managed to complete all of his rehab sessions and, as tabbed by the team, is hoping to join the team in action on May 5th.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 4/22, 7:42 AM CT
Bartolo Colon is expected to begin his throwing program today, according to MLB.com. He is recovering from a strained oblique.

Our View: This is favorable news, but the team is yet to set a time-table for his return.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 4/18, 3:54 PM CT
Bartolo Colon made 25 throws while playing catch on Thursday and will perform a similar routine on Friday. He felt no ill-effects in his strained oblique after the first session, the Providence Journal reports.

Our View: Playing catch is nice, but it's not long toss and it's not throwing off the mound. We don't have a timetable for Colon's return to Triple-A action.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 4/17, 4:57 PM CT
Pitcher Bartolo Colon (oblique) continues to just be, this according to the Providence Journal. The paper notes that Colon was sitting in the visitor’s clubhouse earlier today, just flipping a baseball. Francona said he still has no new information on when the veteran right-hander will begin to throw again.

Our View: Colon, at this point, seems to be content just hanging around winners, instead of competing for a spot on a winning rotation.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 4/16, 2:26 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was seen playing catch with Julian Tavarez in the outfield this afternoon, according to the Boston Globe. Colon has been suffering from a strained right oblique, and is still on the 7-day minor league DL.

Our View: This is favorable news for Colon.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 4/12, 6:49 PM CT
Bartolo Colon is nearing a return to the hill despite suffering from an injury to his right oblique, this according to MLB.com. "He had a very good exam," said Terry Francona. "Whether it's tomorrow or the next day, we're close [to throwing]."

Our View: Colon won't be rushed back to the mound, but the Sox are optimistic that at some point in the not to distant future Colon will be able to contribute at the big league level.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 4/9, 4:32 PM CT
Bartolo Colon, who is still nursing a strained right oblique, was examined by Boston's training staff today, this according to Providence Journal. The right-hander is "still a little bit tender," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. Francona didn't directly answer the question of whether Colon has shed a few pounds since signing with the Sox this spring as a free agent. He indicated weight isn't the most important issue with Colon's conditioning. Francona said Colon has been bothered by a similar oblique injury twice in his career. One time it kept him out of action for seven days; the other time it forced him to the sidelines for 20 days.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 4/8, 4:50 PM CT
Bartolo Colon's exam for an oblique injury has been pushed back a day to Wednesday, according to MLB.com. The Red Sox feel that the injury is nothing more than a minor setback. "I do know that they're not going to let him do anything until he's completely pain-free," manager Terry Francona said. "We've seen these two-day things stretched to five-day things stretched to seven-day things. He's had it twice before in his career. We're going to just make sure he's pain-free before he's allowed to continue doing his stuff." Colon had been doing well in his rehab before this. Hopefully it's just a minor bump in the road.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 4/7, 2:46 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was placed on the minor league DL and will be examined in Boston on Tuesday, the Boston Globe reports. He is dealing with some pain in his right side. "I think it's more with those types of things, we don't want it to turn into something," manager Terry Francona explains. There's not word on if Colon can currently only turn to his left when picking up items off the buffet.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 4/7, 10:38 AM CT
Bartolo Colon is dealing with some soreness in his right side and may need to have his next Triple-A start pushed back, the Boston Globe reports. The injury is not thought to be serious.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 4/3, 8:07 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was dominant in his outing for Triple-A Pawtucket Thursday, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk while punching out five, according to the Providence Journal. Colon's last pitch registered at 95 MPH on the radar gun. With Josh Beckett slated to come off the DL this weekend, the Sox don't have any room in their rotation. However, if Colon continues to pitch like this, he should find his way up to Beantown eventually.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 4/1, 3:46 PM CT
Bartolo Colon is scheduled to pitch the season opener for Triple-A Pawtuckett on Thursday, according to the AP. Curt Schilling is expected to miss half of the season due to his shoulder injury, meaning Colon could work his way up to the bottom of the Red Sox rotation.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 3/29, 6:17 PM CT
The Boston Red Sox have informed pitcher Bartolo Colon he will be starting the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to MLB.com. Colon pitched Friday night in Boston’s 1-3 loss to the Dodgers in spring training, completing four innings of work with three hits and one run allowed, walking just one and striking out four. While the outing is a positive sign for Colon, pitching coach John Farrell reports the team would like to see Colon reach 85 to 100 pitches in one game, and the team feels that will take more time. "Ideally, we'd like to see all of our starters get stretched out to 85 to 100 pitches in Spring Training," said Farrell. "In a normal Spring Training, that's what all of our starters will get to. Whether that's two or three more starts for him at Pawtucket, I'm not going to say that's a plan etched in stone, but certainly it's kind of framework that we're working under." Colon will next pitch for Pawtucket against Indianapolis on Thursday.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 3/22, 3:01 PM CT
Bartolo Colon took the mound in a minor league appearance at City of Palms Park on Saturday morning. Colon tossed three scoreless innings, as the Class A Lancaster Jet Hawks hosted the Twins' Class A Fort Myers Miracle. He threw 34 pitches (23 for strikes), allowed four hits, no walks, and struck out two batters. All positive signs for the former Cy Young winner. MLB.com reported that Colons fastball was lively. "His velocity was clearly plus," pitching coach Gregson said. "[He] threw a couple of really good sliders ... He's got a very good changeup and it's a pitch that I think he's going to start mixing in a little more often. I think it's going to be a good pitch for him. He threw one in his third inning of work and got very good results with it. Had a little bit of a smile on his face when he came off [the mound]." The report didn't mention what Colon registered on the radar gun. Keep abreast of Colon's success during his minor league stint.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 3/19, 3:52 PM CT
The Red Sox reassigned Bartolo Colon, Keith Ginter, and Joe Thurston to minor league camp on Wednesday, the Boston Herald confirms. Colon had worked 2.2 innings this spring and allowed five runs.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 3/17, 3:15 PM CT
Bartolo Colon took part in his second spring game on Monday. "I felt stronger this time (than in his first outing), but my control was not as good," Colon said, according to the Boston Globe. He didn't make it out of the first inning -- the Yankees got him for four runs, three hits and three walks -- but he reported no problems with his shoulder, which is the big key for Colon.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 3/13, 1:07 PM CT
The Providence Journal followed Red Sox Bartolo Colon's first spring start today and according to the report his appearance is complete. The right-hander threw 26 pitches (18 strikes) and allowed one run (solo homer) on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. He retired the first two batters he faced in the second inning before surrendering a solo homer to the Rays' Jon Weber, who crushed the first offering over the right-center field wall.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 3/13, 10:24 AM CT
The Boston Globe reports that there was lots of Thursday morning talk concerning the performances, and the work, of Bartolo Colon . The report notes that manager Terry Francona is pleased with how Colon's throwing and is eager to see him in the game against a pretty good Rays lineup. Colon's next start is slated against the Yankees next Monday in Tampa. What will be more interesting than how the former Cy Young winner fairs against the Yanks, will be the velocity on his fastball. If Colon can find his arm strength and clock his semi-heater in the neighborhood of 92-94 MHP, he automatically becomes an intrigue for fantasy owners who are familiar with Colon and his ability.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 3/9, 2:14 PM CT
Bartolo Colon tossed 43 pitches in his first batting practice of the spring on Sunday, according to MLB.com. "I think the most important thing was getting loose," said pitching coach John Farrell. "We'll just make sure that tomorrow he feels fine and we'll look to slot him into a game at some point this coming week." So long as his body responds well Monday, Colon should be slated to make his exhibition debut on Thursday, though he's expected to be limited to fewer than 30 pitches.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 3/8, 11:47 AM CT
Bartolo Colon threw 50 pitches in the City of Palms Park bullpen Friday morning, according to the Boston Globe and cleared to face live hitters on Sunday. If the 2005 American League Cy Young Award winner continues to have no problems with his right elbow and shoulder, he will make his Grapefruit League debut either Friday vs. Baltimore or next Saturday vs. Cincinnati.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 3/6, 11:53 AM CT
Bartolo Colon will make his spring training debut for the Red Sox on March 15, according to the Boston Globe. The former Cy Young winner had another encouraging bullpen session on Wednesday and his high 80s fastball will be put to the test in live action. The report noted that Colon threw his first breaking pitches of the spring during his session, and is ready to throw two innings of spring work. If all continues to go well, Colon will pitch batting practice Monday before facing the Reds on their next visit, Saturday, March 15.

Our View:
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 3/5, 5:35 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw what is being described as 41 impressive pitches in a bullpen session on Wednesday, 10 days before he is scheduled to take the hill for the Red Sox, this according to the AP. “The expectation was there,” Boston pitching coach John Farrell said. “...I think initially and, again, this is very premature, he’s on the positive side of those expectations.” Colon was thought to be a long shot to join the Red Sox rotation out of camp, but there is always a chance that a strong spring will change that belief. Colon is nothing more than a late round grab at this point as he still has a long way to go to reclaim his Cy Young form.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 3/4, 7:26 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was hoping to make his exhibition debut with the Red Sox on Sunday, but manager Terry Francona doesn't think that's prudent, according to MLB.com. "I think that's too quick," Francona said. "It just doesn't follow the progression that's built into normal throwing." On Monday, Colon threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session. Francona thinks he'd like to see Colon follow that up with two more side sessions, then face hitters in batting practice before taking the mound for a game.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 3/3, 1:07 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session on Monday morning. He tossed mainly fastballs and got up to 90 mph. Colon also threw some changeups. "For not being on the mound for 3 1/2 weeks, I thought he threw to both sides of the plate, he got through the glove well with good carry. A very good day for him," pitching coach John Farrell tells the Boston Globe.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 3/1, 8:16 AM CT
The Boston Globe reports that Bartolo Colon threw another session of long toss on Friday. The former Cy Young Award winner is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session Tuesday and follow that up with three bullpens, every other day, thereafter. The team is working him up to his first scheduled game action on March 15.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 2/29, 8:55 AM CT
If Bartolo Colon is not on Boston's big league roster by May 1, he has an out in his contract that allows him to be released, according to the Boston Globe. If he's in the minors, he'll earn $18,000 per month, while his big league deal would be worth $1.25 million. Currently, manager Terry Francona is looking at March 15 for Colon's spring debut. He'll almost certainly begin the season in the minors, but obviously May 1 will be a key date for Colon this season.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 2/28, 10:18 AM CT
Bartolo Colon will receive his first mound action sometime next week, notes the Boston Globe. Colon told the paper on Wednesday he might be able to pitch in a spring training game as early as March 9. Skipper Terry Francona spoke favorably of Colon's arm after seeing him long-toss (at 60, 90, and 120 feet) and said, "Very pleased, probably a little bit ahead of where we expected him to be. He went through all the stuff with the medical staff, and first of all, he was very compliant, came through it with, I would say, flying colors." Coming off two straight unimpressive years because of shoulder and elbow problems, Colon said he is more than willing to start the season on the farm. Currently the former Cy Young winner has no fantasy value outside of deep AL-only formats.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 2/27, 10:12 AM CT
Bartolo Colon may have showed up to Red Sox camp out of shape (yes, even more so than normal), but it apparently hasn't affected his arm strength. He played long toss with pitching coach John Farrell Tuesday and was throwing the ball 120 feet on a straight line with little effort, according to the Boston Globe. Given that Colon is still trying to work his way back from shoulder woes, the news is heartening. The team is still concerned about his weight, though. "We've got some work to get him right," said Farrell. "I don't know the exact number of pounds to be lost here. I think there is some self-acknowledgement on his part that he's overweight at this time and we have to arrive at a playing weight he's accustomed to." Colon's chances at breaking camp with the club on March 19 are basically nil, given how far behind he is in his throwing and the fact that he has to get in playing shape.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 2/26, 4:52 PM CT
Bartolo Colon arrived in Red Sox camp looking overweight, likely needing to shed about 20 pounds, according to the Boston Herald. Pitching coach John Farrell acknowledged that conditioning will be Colon's biggest challenge. Farrell added that Colon is prepared to stay in camp once the club leaves for the start of the regular season. Once he's in shape, his troublesome shoulder will be the real concern.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 2/26, 1:35 PM CT
The details are in on Bartolo Colon's new contract. Colon's base salary in the majors will be $1.25 million guaranteed, but if he's in the minors, he will earn just $18,000 a month. He could also earn and additional $5.75 million in incentives if he makes 30 starts for the Sox, according to the Boston Herald. Colon has made just 28 starts over the last two seasons because of shoulder trouble, but if he shows this spring that he's healthy he could be worth a gamble late in drafts.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 2/25, 12:53 PM CT
It's official, the Red Sox reached an agreement on Monday with former American League Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon. The package is a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training, according to MLB.com. Colon is expected to report to camp on Tuesday. Pitching for the Angels in 2007, Colon was 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA; and went 1-5 with a 5.11 ERA in 2006.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 2/24, 4:29 PM CT
The Red Sox have signed Bartolo Colon to a minor-league deal, according to ESPN.com. Colon, who is working his way back from a shoulder injury, will provide insurance in the rotation with Curt Schilling expected to miss at least the first half of the year. That's assuming, of course, that Colon pitches well and shows he's healthy this spring. If he does make the Sox opening day roster, he'd be worth a late-round gamble in fantasy.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 2/21, 9:57 AM CT
The Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals will consider taking a look at free agent Bartolo Colon . With Matt Clement (shoulder) questionable for Opening Day the team needs an innings eater to assist the injury riddled staff. On Wednesday morning rumors had Colon and the White Sox agreeing on a minor league deal pending a physical.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 2/20, 3:07 PM CT
Adding a little more spice to rumors that Bartolo Colon might be close to signing with the White Sox, GM Ken Williams refused to confirm nor deny the report that came from the Dominican Republic, according to MLB.com. "I told you guys, all the rumors and all the things that kind of surface, they start to take up a large, large portion of my day," said Williams on Wednesday. "With all of the things that come out of the Internet, out of talk radio, out of blogs, all of that stuff, and I'm just not going to continue to make a habit of confirming or denying anything... Even though, believe me, there are times, and this is one of them, where I really want to say what I feel." Well, we wish he would sound off, because he's one of the few people who may actually know what's going on. The Tuesday report from Impacto Deportivo said the deal was basically just pending a physical, but manager Ozzie Guillen denied that a deal was imminent.

Despite a report from the Dominican Republic, Bartolo Colon does not appear to be close to signing with the White Sox, according to the Chicago Tribune. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he hasn't talked with Colon's representatives in a few weeks. The Sox may still ink Colon, but a deal doesn't appear to be imminent at the moment.

Count the Pirates among the teams watching Bartolo Colon pitch in the Caribbean World Series, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Apparently, the free agent hasn't looked very good. "For two innings, he looked great," one scout said yesterday from the Dominican. "There wasn't much after that, but you're still talking about Bartolo Colon here. This is someone who knows how to pitch." Along with the Pirates, who appear to be only slightly interested in Colon's serviced, the Astros, Royals, Indians and White Sox are teams that have shown some form of interest in Colon this offseason.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 1/22, 10:04 AM CT
The Indians were one of the teams that had expressed interest in Bartolo Colon, but that interest has waned of late, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Colon is reportedly throwing between 87 and 89 mph with no life on his fastball. The Royals may be the frontrunner for Colon's services at this point, but it'd be a surprise if he got anything more than a one-year, incentive-laden deal.

They recently just moved Brett Myers back to the rotation, but the Phillies are still looking for another starter. Bartolo Colon is one guy that interests them. Former Phillie Randy Wolf is another. "We had conversations about both players," assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Both Colon and Wolf are tremendous injury risks, but they also have more upside than most of the other available free agents.

Nothing is set in stone, but the Angels are expected to use Bartolo Colon out of the bullpen in the playoffs - at least to begin with. "When you have a talent like Bartolo, you want him on your staff in some capacity," manager Mike Scioscia said in the AP. "We've looked at a couple scenarios, but we're not going to rule out Bart starting, but we're looking at the scenario of him helping us out of the pen."

Bartolo Colon will not be able to pitch Wednesday due to his sore back, the AP reports. He's hoping to be able to pitch in the final week.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 9/17, 11:29 AM CT
Manager Mike Scioscia has yet to decide whether Bartolo Colon or Ervin Santana will get the start on Wednesday, according to the LA Times. They will both throw bullpen sessions today. At this point, though, it shouldn't really matter who starts for fantasy purposes, because both have to be considered risky options.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 9/12, 11:30 AM CT
Bartolo Colon will make his first start since returning from the DL on Friday against the White Sox, according to the LA Times. He'll take the rotation spot of Ervin Santana, who will be moved to the bullpen. "Ervin has shown he can be valuable in the bullpen, and if Bart can throw the ball with any consistency down the stretch, it will give us a lift," Scioscia said. "If Bart has issues with health or execution or performance, Ervin is not too far away from going back into the rotation. It's a better way to go right now." Assuming Colon pitches effectively over the next couple of weeks, he should be a part of the Angels' postseason rotation.

Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 8/22, 10:18 AM CT
Bartolo Colon, recovering from an elbow injury, will begin a rehab assignment this weekend, according to the LA Times. The Angels have no intention of using him as a reliever when he's able to return, like they did with Kelvim Escobar in 2005. "I don't think that's as much of an option as it was with Kelvim," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "Kelvim had experience as a reliever, and we had a big need in the bullpen. Let's get Bart healthy first, and we'll see." The best estimate has Colon returning from the DL in early September.

It just depends on how he gets through all the hoops he has to jump through." It seems like the odds are stacked against Colon, considering how the last year has gone for him, but it is possible he could return from his ailing elbow later this month.

Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 8/8, 9:35 PM CT
Bartolo Colon plans to throw off a mound Friday for the first time since going on the DL with a sore elbow. "It'll be more of a touch-and-feel thing, just to see how the ball comes out of his hand," manager Mike Scioscia said, according to the AP. "He still needs to step up with two or three bullpen sessions and test his arm aggressively with all of his pitches. If he turns the next one loose, full-gorilla, there's a possibility that he's ready for a (rehab) game, but we'll take it one step at a time." We'll have to wait to see how his mound session goes before even considering a timetable for his return to action.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after Tuesday's game that there was a "silver lining" regarding Colon's injury, which was diagnosed as an impingement in his elbow. "It's some irritation in there. It's not like it's a ligament or something like that," Scioscia said.
Bartolo Colon, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 7/23, 10:29 PM CT

Bartolo Colon has struggled since returning from his torn rotator cuff in late April; in his past four starts, he's 1-2 with a 9.15 ERA. However, pitching coach Mike Butcher said Colon's problems stem from pitch location, not his shoulder, according to the LA Times. He routinely hit 94 mph with his fastball on Thursday, which seems to support the notion that Colon's shoulder is OK. Let's hope that's the case, and that Colon will turn things around on his own soon.

I don't want it to carry through the rest of the season." Manager Mike Scioscia said that the team was "going to take a look at" Colon's arm, which likely means an MRI. It's not clear at this point if Colon will have to miss any starts. He's scheduled to pitch Saturday against Baltimore.
