Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 2/15, 10:19 PM CT
Bill Ladson of MLB.com noted that Gary Sheffield would not be a fit for the Nationals.

Our View: Sheffield wants to be an every-day player, and Washington could only offer him a reserve role. He is not close to signing with any MLB club at this time.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 2/10, 5:06 PM CT
According to the New York Post, free agent slugger Gary Sheffield has not heard from the Mets this offseason, but some teams are reportedly interested in his services.

Our View: This could just be Sheff tooting his own horn (something he has been known to do in the past) but if there is legitimate interest, no specific teams have been mentioned. From the horse's mouth, "There are things on the table that I have to accept or not accept. Right now I have not made up my mind. I have a few things to weigh."
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 1/31, 7:53 AM CT
Gary Sheffield is reportedly mulling two offers for the 2010 season, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: After hitting .276 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 268 at-bats a season ago, it's clear Sheffield can still rake. What isn't clear, is who would want to take on such a headache at this point. Expect his contract to be near the veteran's minimum.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 1/28, 11:30 AM CT
Bob Nightengale of USA Today theorizes that Gary Sheffield would be a "perfect fit" for the Reds.

Our View: While it's hard to call someone who is as big of a malcontent as Sheffield a "perfect fit" for anybody, he's probably still better than either Laynce Nix or Jonny Gomes. If Sheff could swallow his pride and keep his mouth shut, huge "ifs," a move to Cincy would likely work out.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 1/10, 8:44 AM CT
Gary Sheffield said that he's yet to draw much interest around the league, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The veteran free agent is representing himself and desires to land an everyday outfield gig, though it seems unlikely that he'll be able to do so at this point.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 11/24, 8:30 AM CT
Gary Sheffield wants to play again in 2010, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Sheff also claimed he could hit "25-to-40" home runs next season after hitting just ten in 268 at-bats for the Mets in 2009. Since he's already alienated half of baseball, including many high payroll teams that are more inclined to take chances, he may find himself out of a job, however.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 9/22, 9:12 AM CT
According to the New York Post, veteran outfielder Gary Sheffield has said he will return to play his final year of baseball in 2010. Sheffield has played in 97 games for the Mets this season, hitting .277 with 10 homers and 43 RBI.

Our View: As with much of his career, his 2009 season has been full of drama. His production is down, and although he is still good enough to help a team next season, he may not be worth the headache he brings with him. If he comes back, someone will take a chance on him, but his days of fantasy relevance are over.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 9/11, 8:50 AM CT
Gary Sheffield (back spasms) could return this weekend against the Phililes, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Sheff hasn't played since August 28, and many thought he would not be returning this season. He felt fine during batting practice on Thursday, however, and wants to play this weekend. He's obviously not a fantasy consideration at this point, but if you've ever been a fan you may want to watch him play some these final weeks. He will turn 41 this November, and with all the drama he's had with the Mets these past few months, very few teams are likely to gamble and sign him this winter. This could be the end of a long and productive career.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 9/7, 8:22 AM CT
The New York Daily News is reporting that Mets' outfielder Gary Sheffield is likely done for the year with a back injury. Sheffield is getting treatment on the back, but manager Jerry Manuel doesn't believe he will be ready to go before the season is out.

Our View: Sheff was relegated to pinch-hitting duties, but apparently the back is bad enough that he can't even do that anymore. It has been a rocky last few weeks for Sheffield and the Mets, and it seems certain he won't be back with the team next season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 8/30, 8:18 AM CT
Gary Sheffield will serve in the role of pinch-hitter indefinitely after aggravating his lower-back injury again on Friday, according to the New York Post. Sheffield has been dealing with the injury since last Tuesday.

Our View: Sheff will be coming off the bench for the rest of the season, although he could see a few starts here and there if his back improves. Don't expect him to do much over the last month of the season, and if you haven't done so already you should find another option.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/25, 8:34 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Newsday's David Lennon is reporting on his Twitter page that Gary Sheffield left Tuesday's game with a cramp in his lower back.

Our View: No word yet on how serious the injury is, but a cramp doesn't sound all that bad. We will let you know how long he is expected to be out, but don't be shocked if he misses some time.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/25, 8:13 PM CT
Gary Sheffield left Tuesday's game in the seventh inning with an undisclosed injury. Sheffield was replaced by Jeremy Reed on the bases.

Our View: Sheffield was escorted off the field by the team trainer, so it looks like an injury of some sort. We will keep you updated on his status when it is released.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/24, 3:30 PM CT
Gary Sheffield led the way for the Mets' offense on Monday in their 6-2 loss to the rival Phillies. Sheffield went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in the contest.

Our View: Amidst the drama that has taken over Sheffield, he managed to come out today and put a couple nice swings on the ball. His situation seems unlikely to be resolved any time soon, so expect him to be an inconsistent fantasy play for the rest of the season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/24, 8:28 AM CT
Gary Sheffield did not start Sunday's game against the Phillies due to a right wrist injury suffered in the weight room, according to the New York Daily News. Sheffield did manage to pinch-hit in the eighth inning, and he flied out to left.

Our View: This injury sounds minor, but you have to wonder if there really is an injury at all. With all of the Sheff-Mets drama as of late, it seems more likely that the team is looking for an excuse to sit him. He is about as unstable a fantasy play as you can get right now, so if you have another option you should bump him in front of Sheff.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 8/21, 4:16 PM CT
According to Bart Hubbuch on Twitter, the Mets have no intention of waiving or releasing outfielder Gary Sheffield.

Our View: Oh the drama. GM Omar Minaya says that he called the meeting with Sheff and that the outfielder never asked for an extension (contrary to yesterday's reports). Who knows who or what to believe in this situation, but it sounds like Sheff will stick with the Mets for the rest of the season and continue to get regular playing time.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 8/21, 3:47 PM CT
Gary Sheffield is in the Mets' lineup for their Friday night game against the Phillies. Sheffield was benched yesterday after threatening to leave the team if he didn't get a contract extension.

Our View: This is quite a surprise after the events over the past few days. One of the two sides must have buckled, and we will keep you updated on the situation. If you are a Sheff owner, it may not be time to give up just yet.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 8/20, 5:44 PM CT
It has been revealed by the New York Post that the reason Gary Sheffield is not in the Mets lineup on Thursday night is that he asked the club for a contract extension, the club said no, and he then threatened to leave.

Our View: Just another selfish, foolish act by one of sports' biggest malcontents. It is unclear what is going to happen next between the two sides, but the Mets could release Sheffield. Maybe this time, no one will sign him.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 8/20, 4:23 PM CT
Gary Sheffield has asked for the game off Thursday night so he can "clear his thoughts," according to the New York Post's Bart Hubhuch.

Our View: Does he mean his irrational fear that the Mets plan on "trading" him even though they could no longer get anything in return for him because he has already been pulled back from waivers (dumping his salary is not an issue, either). Sheff - still confounding after all these years.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 8/19, 10:53 AM CT
Gary Sheffield has told the New York Post that he does not envision himself finishing 2009 in a Mets uniform, and that he may retire if he is sent somewhere he does not want to play.

Our View: The Mets can no longer get anything in return for Sheffield, since they pulled him off of waivers last week, so Sheff being placed on waivers again, where he could be claimed for nothing, seems very unlikely. Still, Sheffield has been paranoid before, and he will surely be paranoid again.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/18, 10:26 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of RBI in the Mets' 9-4 win over the Braves Tuesday.

Our View: Sheff is having a decent season, hitting .290 with 10 homers and 43 RBI, but is a tough fantasy play at this stage in his career due to injuries and the fact that he doesn't start every day. He's best if limited to a reserve fantasy role.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/17, 9:16 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 1-for-3 with a single, and recorded the Mets' lone RBI in tonight's 10-1 loss to San Francisco at Citi Field.

Our View: Sheffield has an RBI in three of his last four games, but has not generated a homer since July 29 (at Milwaukee).
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 8/12, 8:40 AM CT
According to Metsblog.com, Mets' manager Jerry Manuel told the media on Tuesday that he would like to see Gary Sheffield return to the team next season. Sheffield is hitting .283 with 10 home runs this season.

Our View: Sheff has been one of the Mets' best offensive players this season, but at age 40 you have to wonder if the team would actually consider bringing him back. He has been slowed by injury this season, and it would make more sense for the team to move forward with the young players they already have.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/11, 6:26 PM CT
The latest on Gary Sheffield has the left fielder and his creaky hamstring returning to the lineup on Wednesday, according to the New York Post's Bart Hubbuch.

Our View: Do yourself a favor: unless there are absolutely no alternatives available in your league, drop Sheff. He's more brittle than Samuel L. Jackson's character in "Unbreakable" at this point, and the hapless Mets medical staff has proven wholly incapable of getting him better quickly or accurately gauging when he might return. Save some face while there's still time.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/10, 7:08 PM CT
Gary Sheffield will test his ailing hamstring tonight to see if he can return to the diamond Tuesday, according to Bart Hubbuch's (New York Post) twitter page.

Our View: Sheffield has not played since last Wednesday, and should remain held out of lineups until further notice. Fernando Tatis is roaming in left field in his absence tonight at Arizona.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 8/9, 1:47 PM CT
Although he's sitting out Sunday, Gary Sheffield (hamstring) will supposedly be in the team's lineup on Monday, according to the New York Post's Bart Hubbuch.

Our View: Believe it when you see it is all that can really be said.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 8/9, 10:17 AM CT
Gary Sheffield (hamstring) will not be in the Mets lineup vs. the Padres on Sunday, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: There needs to be a Warren Commission style investigation into the Mets medical staff after this season is over, as ever player seems to get hurt, and none of them ever seem to get better quickly. Sheffield is 40 years old, but this has still gotten to a point where it is ridiculous.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 8/7, 6:28 PM CT
Gary Sheffield is sitting out his second straight game with a sore hamstring on Friday, according to Newsday's David Lennon.

Our View: Here we go again. The Mets and lingering injuries almost always equal a trip to the disabled list, so don't plan on seeing Sheff for the rest of the weekend, at least.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 8/6, 7:58 AM CT
Updating a previous report, Gary Sheffield pulled himself out of Wednesday's game as a precautionary measure according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: It doesn't look like Sheff is heading to the disabled list. He'll likely miss a couple game and could get into the second half of the Padres series this weekend. Consider him day-to-day right now, but don't be surprised if this worsens. It is the Mets we're talking about here.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 8/5, 2:16 PM CT
Gary Sheffield was removed from the Mets game on Wednesday with an apparent hamstring injury as he was trying to stretch a single into a double.

Our View: Flipping ridiculous. Mets' players are dropping faster than the Dow Jones during a run on stocks. The Mets made it all of an hour between injuries as Jon Niese was injured earlier in the game. Sheffield has had troubles with his legs all season, so this is certainly a potentially scary development for Sheffield owners.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/4, 11:09 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI in the Mets' 12-7 loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday. Sheffield is hitting .286 on the season.

Our View: This was a nice performance from a guy who has been hurt lately, but Sheff remians one of the top offensive options for the injury-depleted Mets. With much of the offensive power on the DL, Sheffield should continue to be a nice fantasy option as long as he stays healthy.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/3, 7:55 AM CT
Gary Sheffield is expected to start in left field for the Mets on Monday in their series finale against the Diamondbacks, according to the New York Daily News. Sheffield was activated from the DL on Sunday and entered the game as a pinch hitter in the fifth inning.

Our View: Sheffield expected to start yesterday, but manager Jerry Manuel opted to stick with his outfield of Cory Sullivan, Angel Pagan, and Jeff Francouer because they had been hitting well as a group against righties. After being limited by D-Backs' starter Jon Garland in Sunday's game, it looks like Manuel will be going back to Sheff as his everyday left fielder. Sheffield could be a nice addition to any fantasy squad, and now may be the time to pounce on him if he is available, because once he starts playing everyday he will likely get picked up before long.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 8/2, 10:11 AM CT
Gary Sheffield (hamstring) will be activated from the DL by the Mets today, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Sheffield should resume his everyday role in left field. He's hitting .286 with 10 home runs in 210 at-bats this season, making him worthy of ownership in nearly all leagues, so think about snatching him up if he's been dropped over his DL stint.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 8/1, 5:27 PM CT
Gary Sheffield won't be activated from the DL until Sunday, according to Bart Hubbuch's (New York Post) twitter page. He has been recovering from a strained hamstring.

Our View: He was expected to be activated Saturday, but the Mets decided to wait one more day. The 40-year-old outfielder would be a decent option for mixed leagues if he proves to be healthy upon his return.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 7/30, 3:10 PM CT
Gary Sheffield (hamstring) is expected to be activated the disabled list this Saturday, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: He'll be joining the Mets in the midst of a hot-streak. He's dealt with plenty of injuries before, so as long as he is actually healthy, don't hesitate to reinsert back into your starting lineup.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 7/25, 6:08 PM CT
According to the New York Daily News, the Mets have placed Gary Sheffield on the 15-day DL with a strained right hamstring.

Our View: Sheff pronounced himself healthy enough to avoid the DL about an hour before the move was made, but the Mets needed to make room on the roster for Jon Niese. Sheff hasn't played since last Friday, so the Move is retroactive to July 17th.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 7/21, 4:31 PM CT
Continuing a recurring trend of the 2009 Mets season, Gary Sheffield will be landing of the disabled list if his injured hamstring does not get "significantly" better by Friday, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.

Our View: Many Mets fans are wishing Jerry Manuel's crack about the team's medical staff last week wasn't coming so eerily true right about now. After first being diagnosed as harmless cramps, it's obvious there is something more serious wrong with Sheffield, and at 40 years old, there's no telling how long he might be out. Hope for the best, but of course, expect the worst.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 7/21, 11:14 AM CT
According to MetsBlog.com, outfielder Gary Sheffield will not be in the Mets' lineup again on Tuesday. Sheffield is dealing with an injury to his right hamstring.

Our View: At this point, you have to believe that the injury is more than just cramping. He will be able to pinch-hit tonight, but manager Jerry Manuel doesn't expect him to be available to start until closer to the weekend. Sit him tonight for sure and you should probably find another option for the next few days as well.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 7/20, 2:14 PM CT
Gary Sheffield is not in the Mets lineup again on Monday, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.

Our View: It was reported earlier in the day that Sheffield's hamstring injury may be more serious than just cramps, so he could be out of the lineup a few more days after this even.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 7/20, 11:20 AM CT
Gary Sheffield's leg injury may be more serious than just cramps, speculates the New York Post.

Our View: After manager Jerry Manuel was admonished for making a crack about the Mets medical staff when he was asked about Sheff's injury last week, it sounds like his joke is ringing sadly true. The 40-year-old outfielder has no firm return date, and has been "sore" much longer than anyone with cramps usually is. Manuel said he may play tomorrow night against Washington (which cures lots of things that ail people), but consider him a game time decision at best.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 7/19, 3:01 PM CT
Gary Sheffield (leg cramps) will officially not be in the Mets lineup when they take on the Braves Sunday afternoon, according to David Lennon of Newsday.

Our View: No big surprise here. He is day-to-day, and will likely return to the lineup sometime next week.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 7/19, 10:24 AM CT
Gary Sheffield says the hamstring cramps causing him to miss time this weekend may have been caused by his vacation to the Bahamas last week, according to the New York Post.

Our View: He says he spent a considerable amount of time in the heat, and may have become a little dehydrated. He is expected to rejoin the lineup in the next day or two, though you shouldn't start him today.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 7/18, 12:39 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Gary Sheffield says the hamstring injury keeping him out of Saturday's game is not serious and that he should be considered day-to-day, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.

Our View: The Mets dodged a bullet for once. Expect him to sit out today and Sunday, but be ready to start him again next week.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 7/18, 10:49 AM CT
According to the New York Daily News, there is "no way" that Gary Sheffield will start on Saturday after feeling his left hamstring tighten up on Friday night.

Our View: The 40-year-old Sheffield has been productive when he's played this season, but has been very injury plagued. Expect to have to hold him out of your lineup for at least a few days.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 7/16, 9:30 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI in tonight's 5-3 loss at Atlanta.

Our View: The Mets only had six hits in the game, and stranded 10 runners on base. Sheffield has a hit in four straight games, with five RBI over the span. The 40-year-old outfielder is worth employing in NL-only leagues.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 7/12, 3:51 PM CT
Gary Sheffield had a nice afternoon at the dish for the Mets on Sunday in their 9-7 win over the Reds. Sheffield went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI in the game.

Our View: Sheff looked good at the plate today, and the Mets will need more of this if they are going to stay in the race. With all of the injuries, guys like Sheffield have to step up offensively, and he did just that today.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 7/9, 9:56 PM CT
Gary Sheffield was productive in tonight's 11-2 loss to the Dodgers at Citi Field, as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He hit a single and a double.

Our View: Sheffield was in need of a solid outing, as he was only hitting .167 over 18 at-bats in July heading into tonight's game.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 7/1, 9:00 AM CT
According to the New York Daily News, Gary Sheffield will be given the day off Wednesday.

Our View: Sheff is fine, the Mets just want his to get some rest in with a righty on the mound. He will face Paul Maholm on Thursday and crushes left-handed pitching, so expect him to get a start then.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 6/29, 9:45 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored in tonight's 10-6 loss at Milwaukee. He hit two singles and a two-run homer.

Our View: Sheffield hit his fifth homer of June, and his 10 of the season. He should remain a viable source for power in deeper leagues, as long as he stays intact.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 6/26, 10:29 PM CT
Gary Sheffield was the Mets' only source of scoring in tonight's 9-1 loss to the Yankees at Citi Field, as he went 1-for-3 with a solo homer off CC Sabathia.

Our View: The Mets only mustered three hits in the game. Sheffield now has nine homers for the season, and 508 for his career.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 6/25, 10:59 AM CT
The New York Post is reporting that Mets' outfielder Gary Sheffield is not in Thursday's lineup for the Mets as he continues to struggle with a variety of injuries. Sheffield has an inflamed bursa sac in his right knee and a sore hamstring, but he told the paper he is determined to avoid the DL.

Our View: It sounds like Sheff is pretty beat up, but he seems determined to stay off the DL. He got a cortisone shot in his knee yesterday, so hopefully he will be good to go Friday, but we will have to see. Stay tuned for updates on his status for tomorrow, but he is out today for sure.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 6/24, 4:32 PM CT
Gary Sheffield will miss his third straight game Wednesday due to his ailing right knee, according to the Star-Ledger. He reportedly received a cortisone shot.

Our View: Fernando Tatis will roam left field tonight against the Cardinals, with Fernando Martinez in center and Ryan Church in right. Sheffield is expected to remain out until Friday.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 6/20, 1:23 PM CT
According to Newsday, Gary Sheffield is not in the lineup for the Mets on Saturday.

Our View: No reason as to why Sheff is sitting. Still, it likely won't matter as looming bad weather will probably cause the game to be rescheduled anyway.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 6/17, 9:14 PM CT
Gary Sheffield was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Orioles.

Our View: There has been a lot of fuss about Sheff's right knee, but his production has only gotten better. In five games, he has gotten nine hits and three home runs. He has scored five times and knocked in five runs in this stretch.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 6/16, 7:35 PM CT
The Mets still don't believe Gary Sheffield's balky right knee needs an MRI according to MLB.com.

Our View: Sheffield was in the Mets lineup as the designated hitter on Tuesday as the team played in Baltimore.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 6/15, 12:25 PM CT
WFAN radio reports that Gary Sheffield will not get an MRI on his right knee despite experiencing pain there for the past few weeks. The outfielder claims he was never scheduled for an MRI, refuting previous reports.

Our View: Sheff has done a solid job at the plate for the Mets this season. He is hitting .270/.390/.482 with 24 RBI and 27 runs scored. He should continue to be used as the team's DH while they compete in AL ballparks throughout interleague play.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 6/13, 4:10 PM CT
Gary Sheffield is slated for an MRI after experiencing pain behind his right knee for the last two weeks, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Sheffield has only been productive enough to employ in deeper fantasy leagues. We will keep you posted when he receives the results of his MRI.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 6/2, 7:23 AM CT
The New York Daily News is reporting that Gary Sheffield is suffering from discomfort behind his right knee.

Our View: At Sheffield's age, any injury should be worrisome. His fantasy value is nonexistent, and it won't help that he is hurt. Steer clear in all leagues.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 5/26, 9:06 PM CT
Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer for the second consecutive game as the Mets downed the Nationals 6-1. Sheffield was 2-for-3 in the game.

Our View: Sheffield now has three homers in his last five games and has driven in nine over that stretch. He's been a nice impact bat lately with so many of the Mets players landing on the DL (most notably Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes).
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 5/25, 9:59 PM CT
A video replay upheld Gary Sheffield's three-run blast in Monday's 5-2 win over the Nationals. The left fielder finished 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI, and a run scored while hitting cleanup.

Our View: Sheff has RBI in each of his four games since returning from a bout with food poisoning. He is 5-for-12 with two home runs, six RBI, and four walks in that stretch. It looks as if the Mets are trying to utilize him more and he should have solid value throughout the interleague portion of this season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 5/22, 5:32 PM CT
The New York Post reports that Gary Sheffield will start in left field against the Red Sox. He has missed the previous few games while battling food poisoning. Carlos Beltran will start at DH.

Our View: It would seem to make more sense to play Sheff at DH and Beltran in the outfield. Regardless, Sheff should see regular at-bats while playing at Fenway this weekend.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 5/9, 10:16 AM CT
Gary Sheffield will start in right field for Saturday's game against the Pirates at Citi Field, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Ryan Church will ride the pine. Sheffield in hitting .171 with one homer over 35 at-bats and is only worth consideration for deeper NL-only leagues.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 4/23, 10:52 AM CT
Gary Sheffield will start in right field for today's game at St. Louis, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Daniel Murphy will start in left, with Ryan Church riding the pine. Sheffield is just 2-for-13 so far, but is still worth a look for deeper NL-only leagues. He hit 25 homers over 103 career games against St. Louis, with a .285 batting average.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 4/21, 6:42 PM CT
The Daily News reports that manager Jerry Manuel said the Daniel Murphy and Ryan Church will be his regulars in the corner outfield spots and Gary Sheffield will serve as a reserve.

Our View: This announcement is probably enough to warrant Sheffield a spot on the waiver wire. He has mostly served as a pinch-hitter since coming to the Mets and it seems he will continue to do so.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 4/18, 9:47 AM CT
Gary Sheffield is slated to start in left field for Saturday's game against the Brewers at Citi Field, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Daniel Murphy is getting the day off. Sheffield swatted his 500th career homer last night, and is worth consideration for fantasy lineups today.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 4/17, 8:51 PM CT
Outfielder Gary Sheffield hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning on Friday night. It was the 500th home run of his career, and it came off of Brewers reliever Mitch Stetter. He is the 25th player in major league history to reach the milestone.

Our View: Congrats, Sheff. We still fondly remember him as the baby-faced kid with the gold inlays on his front teeth, and this milestone makes us feel old. Now we're sad.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 4/14, 8:10 AM CT
Gary Sheffield is slated to make his first start of the season in right field Wednesday against San Diego, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Skipper Jerry Manuel noted that Sheffield could make his second start in left field in place of Daniel Murphy, namely as right fielder Ryan Church is off to a strong start. Sheffield only has one at-bat with New York so far, and remains one homer away from 500.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 4/9, 10:28 AM CT
Skipper Jerry Manuel noted that there is a "slim possibility" that Gary Sheffield could start in right field Sunday, according to the New York Daily News. Manuel said, "You have to eventually play it. There is going to be a point in time where we put him in the field."

Our View: Sheffield is yet to make his season debut with New York, and remains one homer shy of 500. Ryan Church is the regular right fielder.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 4/3, 2:49 PM CT
Gary Sheffield has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Mets, according to Sports Illustrated. Terms were not disclosed.

Our View: Sheffield will serve as a pinch-hitter and will spell Ryan Church in right field, and should see enough action to be useful for deeper NL-only leagues. He is one homer shy of 500.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 4/3, 11:37 AM CT
The Mets are close to signing free agent outfielder Gary Sheffield. "Unless something drastic happens, he is a Met," a source informs the New York Post.

Our View: Sheffield would give the Mets a right-handed complement to outfielders Ryan Church and Daniel Murphy, although that's supposedly what Fernando Tatis does. The Mets might also see if he's comfortable with backup work at first base. Sheffield won't play every day and won't have much upside, but he is worth a flyer in NL-only formats, provided he does sign with the Mets.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 4/3, 8:18 AM CT
The Braves are not interested in bringing back Gary Sheffield following his release by Detroit, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View: Sheffield served with Atlanta in 2002 and 2003, swatting 64 homers over the span, but the Braves do not have room for him, and already upgraded their outfield with Garret Anderson. The Phillies are still in the running for Sheffield, and the Mets may garner interest as well. He was scheduled to meet with the Reds on Thursday.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 4/2, 11:44 AM CT
Reds manager Dusty Baker and general manager Walt Jocketty were scheduled to meet with Gary Sheffield Thursday once the veteran officially clears waivers, according to MLB.com. "I'm sure he has some offers," Baker said. "I asked Walt for permission to make the call. I made the call, then Walt talked to [Reds president and CEO Bob] Castelllini. I talked to Jim Leyland [Wednesday] night, just to see, because he hadn't played the outfield in a long time."

Our View: This would be an interesting fit if the Reds decide that Sheff still has the ability to play the outfield, as he could get significant playing time in left field. He could be back on the fantasy radar if playing in that ballpark.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 4/2, 7:12 AM CT
The Reds are one of the three teams interested in Gary Sheffield, according to the Dayton Daily News.

Our View: The club likes Sheffield as he would add a big right-handed bat to their offense. He is one homer shy of 500 for his career, and it would not take long for him to reach the milestone while playing his home games at the Great American Ballpark.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 4/1, 2:07 PM CT
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Gary Sheffield is drawing interest from three different teams.

Our View: The Phillies have already spoken with his agent, but Sheffield is looking for a bigger role than they have available. He has recently expressed his desire to play for the Rays, as he is from the Tampa area.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 4/1, 8:38 AM CT
The Detroit Free Press reports that Gary Sheffield hopes to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Our View: Sheff is from the Tampa area, and he would compete with Gabe Gross, Gabe Kapler, and Matt Joyce for a starting outfield position. Sheffield also has been linked to the Phillies, but it is believed that he wants an everyday job.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 3/31, 3:25 PM CT
The Phillies have contacted Gary Sheffield's rep after being released by the Tigers, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Sheffield would not start in the outfield with the Phillies, and would not be able to serve as a DH, meaning his fantasy value would be limited.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 3/31, 10:17 AM CT
Updating an earlier report, Gary Sheffield prefers to play for his home-town Rays after being released by the Tigers, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: The Rays currently do not have any room for Sheffield though, who is one homer away from 500. The club is set at DH with Pat Burrell and there are no open spots in the outfield.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 3/31, 8:46 AM CT
Gary Sheffield has been released by the Tigers, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Sheffield was enjoying his spring camp without any pain in his shoulders, and it is uncertain why skipper Jim Leyland let him go. He will have to hit his 500th homer with another club. This could now move Marcus Thames into the DH role.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 3/22, 10:52 AM CT
Gary Sheffield has grown accustomed to being the designated hitter in Detroit, but that doesn't mean he has to enjoy his role, according to the Boston Globe. "I'll never get used to that (DH-ing)," Sheffield said. "I'm a complete ballplayer and I like to play both ends, but if this is my role, I just have to accept it."

Our View: Sheffield has declared himself as the DH since the start of spring training. He says he was reprimanded by manager Jim Leyland last season upon asking if he could play outfield.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 3/20, 4:23 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 1-for-3 with a home run against the Nationals on Friday.

Our View: Barring any major health issues, the 40-year-old Sheffield will certainly contribute offensively to the Tigers' lineup. He now has three spring homers and still possesses those quick hands needed to turn on inside fastballs.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 3/11, 4:16 PM CT
Gary Sheffield had a big day Wednesday, going 2-for-2 with both his hits going for homeruns. One of which was a two-run shot off of Yankees' ace CC Sabathia.

Our View: This is a nice breakout for Sheffield, but he's still only hitting .167 this spring. He'll need to improve on that as well as his .225 average last year if he's going to retain any real fantasy value.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 3/3, 7:43 PM CT
Gary Sheffield was held hitless in two at-bats Tuesday in the Tigers' 7-5 win.

Our View: For the Tigers to be a true contender in the loaded AL Central, they'll need Sheffield to duplicate his '08 numbers of 19 home runs and 57 RBI, but improve upon a .225 average, which was a career-low. Sheffield batted .194 in 1991, while with Milwaukee, but he played in only 50 games that season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 2/28, 5:50 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 0-for-2 with a walk on Saturday against the Mets.

Our View: Sheffield proved he can still be a productive player when healthy in 2008 by cranking 19 home runs with 57 RBI in just 418 at-bats. However, his .225 average is certain to turn off fantasy owners.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 2/26, 9:48 AM CT
Gary Sheffield's left arm is still swollen after being struck by a pitch Tuesday, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Sheffield won't play until Friday against the Jays. The 40-year-old may have one more solid campaign left in him, but will be a risky fantasy option among designated hitters.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 2/25, 9:40 AM CT
Gary Sheffield will sit out today's exhibition opener against the Braves as his left arm is still swollen after being struck by a pitch on his elbow yesterday, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Marcus Thames will start at DH in Sheffield's absence. The ailment is minor and Sheffield expects to participate in Friday's game against the Blue Jays.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 2/24, 4:28 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Gary Sheffield is fine after taking a pitch to the elbow Tuesday morning during batting practice. The pitch reportedly irritated a nerve, and Sheffield spent time with ice wrapped around the elbow.

Our View: The veteran outfielder said he expected to be fine by Wednesday for Detroit's first spring training game.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 2/6, 9:44 AM CT
Gary Sheffield's surgically repaired shoulder is fully healed, according to the Detroit News. Assistant GM Al Avila said, "This guy is gonna have a good year for us." Skipper Jim Leyland added, "I have just got a feeling he's gonna have a big year."

Our View: The 40-year-old vet looks to be a solid fantasy choice among designated hitters, and is only one homer away from joining the 500-club.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 12/11, 7:14 PM CT
The Rangers aren't expected to trade for Gary Sheffield, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Rangers would only be interested if the Tigers would eat some of Sheffield's salary and the Tigers aren't willing to do so.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 12/10, 2:08 PM CT
The Rangers have inquired about Tigers' outfielder Gary Sheffield, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View: The Rangers are considering the 40-year-old an option to replace Milton Bradley in the middle of the batting order.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 10/18, 8:58 AM CT
Agent Scott Boras was awarded $550,000 by an arbitrator, who decided he should be compensated for eliminating an option in the contract of Gary Sheffield that allowed him to become a free agent, according to the AP.

Our View: Boras negotiated the elimination of an $11 million option in 2004 that allowed Sheffield to be a free agent. Sheffield subsequently fired Boras and negotiated directly with the Yankees, signing a three-year deal with the club.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 9/29, 9:33 AM CT
Gary Sheffield remains at 499 career home runs and has one last chance today against the White Sox to join the 500 club, according to Mlive.com.

Our View: Today's game will be played at hitter friendly U.S. Cellular Field against starting pitcher Gavin Floyd, who surrendered 30 homers this season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 9/26, 9:43 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 3-for-4 with two RBI in Friday's 6-4 win over the Rays. He hit a single and two solo homers.

Our View: Sheffield now has 499 career homers, with 19 coming this season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 9/22, 4:36 PM CT
Gary Sheffield was suspended for four games for his role in the Tigers-Indians game from last Friday, according to the Miami Herald. Sheffield will not appeal the suspension and will begin serving it immediately.

Our View: Sheffield's season of disgrace continues to roll on. He is hitting .223-17-54 in 404 AB this year an any hope he has of continuing to be a productive hitter will likely only occur if he suits up for another club next season as it's clear that he has worn out his welcome in Detroit.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 9/20, 8:57 AM CT
Gary Sheffield charged Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona from first base after a pickoff throw, which incited a brawl on Friday. After the game, Sheffield warned Carmona, who has hit Sheffield three times, that things would get uglier if he was hit once more, according to the Detroit Free Press. "Three strikes, you out. And if there's a fourth, it gets more violent. Trust me," Sheffield said.

Our View: We're not entirely sure what that means, but it seems the only other thing Sheffield could do would be take his bat to the mound, and we sincerely hope he's not dumb enough to do that. Fantasy owners wish he brought more bat to the plate with him this year, as his batting average is a miserable .220.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 9/19, 8:05 PM CT
The AP reports that Gary Sheffield was ejected from Friday night's game after charging Cleveland pitcher Fausto Carmona...from first base. With Sheffield on first after being hit by a pitch and Brandon Inge at the plate, Carmona made a throw to first base. Afterward, Sheffield appeared to yell at Carmona, telling him to throw a pitch instead, and the righthander responded with words of his own. Sheffield proceeded to run toward the mound and lunged at Carmona as the benches and bullpens cleared. Carmona appeared to unload a few punches as players from both teams crowded around the pair before they eventually were separated. The brawl lasted for several minutes, with minor scuffles breaking out between other players.

Our View: Perhaps Gary was releasing some of the pent-up frustrationfrom this forgettable year. In 107 games, he is hitting .221 with just 17 home runs. Be sure to catch the highlights of the brawl as it was one of the better ones of the season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 9/17, 1:26 PM CT
Gary Sheffield hit his 497th home run Monday and the Tigers have 12 games left for him to chase 500, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: Sheffield will have good opportunities to reach the milestone with a game tonight at Texas, and then three games at hitter friendly Progressive Field in Cleveland. The Tigers will then host the Royals for three games, and then the Rays head into town for four games to wrap up the regular season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 9/15, 10:44 PM CT
Gary Sheffield hit his 17th home run on the season on Monday night but the Tigers fell to the Rangers, 11-8.

Our View: It has been a disappointing season all around for the Tigers and especially for Sheffield who is hitting .222 on the year.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 9/8, 11:52 PM CT
Gary Sheffield homered twice and drove in five runs as the Tigers defeated the Athletics 14-8 on Monday night.

Our View: Sheffield has been surging lately, but he can't hide the fact that his season has been a huge disappointment, only 16 home runs and a .225 average.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 9/4, 9:57 AM CT
Gary Sheffield's right shoulder has been sore, and he may not be able to play Thursday, according to the Detroit Free-Press.

Our View: Sheffield is hitting a disappointing .228 on the year, and his home run and RBI totals, 14 and 45 respectively, are not good enough to make fantasy owners put him in their lineups.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 9/1, 2:00 PM CT
Gary Sheffield hit a home run against the Yankees in the second inning Monday that placed him at No. 25 on the all-time home run list, just ahead of Fred McGriff and Lou Gehrig, according to Tigers.com.

Our View: Sheffield has had a poor season by any standards, disappointing fantasy owners to the tune of a .224 batting average, 13 home runs and 43 RBI.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/25, 1:14 PM CT
Manager Jim Leyland is looking ahead to 2009 regarding Gary Sheffield, according to the Detroit Free Press. Leyland said, "He's on the ball better and swinging more aggressively. I think he's improved a lot. All I need him to do next year is hit. He's not going to play the outfield. I think he's got a chance to be fine. It's a matter of centering more balls, and I think he can do that. Sheff can still be a force offensively. He can still put fear in pitchers."

Our View: Sheffield will turn 40 in November, but is signed for another season with Detroit. It is not hard to picture him having a favorable bounce back season in 2009.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/18, 11:05 PM CT
Gary Sheffield had three hits, including his 13th homer, in the Tigers' 8-7 win Monday.

Our View: That's three homers and eight RBI in seven games since Sheff was placed on waivers.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 8/13, 6:16 PM CT
Gary Sheffield reports he has no concerns about the Tigers decision to place him on waivers, according to the Associated Press. "I don't pay attention to it -- I've been on waivers plenty of times," he said Wednesday. "I don't know why it is a big deal that I've been put on waivers. That's nothing new. Lots of great players are put on waivers but it is only a story when it is someone like Manny [Ramirez] or me -- someone that people have an opinion about."

Our View: Sheffield claims to have no hopes or expectations of being traded, though the decision indicates it is a possibility. His lawyer, Rufus Williams, confirmed Sheffield hasn't asked to be dealt. Sheffield homered twice on Tuesday but is hitting just .223 with 12 homers in an injury-plagued season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/12, 9:43 PM CT
The Tigers thought a late surge would get the win, but the pitching immediately fell through to give Toronto the 6-4 win. At the dish, it was Gary Sheffield (the recently-waived Gary Sheffield) doing work, going 2-for-4 with two homers to total two RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View: He's still hitting a lowly .223 on the season, but a team in need of power seems likely to give it full consideration. As we saw tonight, he is a beast when motivated.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/12, 4:06 PM CT
Gary Sheffield has been put on waivers, and is available for any team to claim, according to MLive.com. However, he remains in the Tigers lineup tonight.

Our View: Sheffield had a tiff with manager Jim Leyland over playing DH exclusively and not being allowed to play in the outfield, but it's unlikely this move had anything to do with that. It probably had a lot to do with the fact that Sheffield is hitting .222 and will make $14 million next year.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 8/11, 8:17 PM CT
Gary Sheffield wants to be used in the outfield and not just at DH, according to MLB.com. "I don't want to DH. I don't feel like a baseball player when I DH. I don't know how to be the leader that I am from the bench."

Our View: Well Sheff, how about you do better than hitting .222 with only 10 home runs in 275 AB? With numbers like that, he should just be happy that he is in the lineup no matter what spot he occupies.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 8/8, 9:24 AM CT
Gary Sheffield is feeling good again and stated that he is no longer limited in any way by his shoulder, according to MLive.com. He has not felt this good since the first half of 2007, when he had 21 homers at the All-Star break for Detroit, and he added, "I'm back to being a threat. I've been feeling like that for awhile, but I need to be active. You lose your rhythm otherwise."

Our View: Sheffield has eight hits, one homer, and four RBI over his last six games, and looks to be a solid fantasy performer down the stretch.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 7/21, 11:03 PM CT
Gary Sheffield went 1-for-5 on Monday, but that one hit was a three-run homer.

Our View: Sheff has two long balls in five games since the All-Star break, which is a good sign. He remains a major injury risk, but he should be useful while healthy.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 7/17, 9:24 PM CT
Gary Sheffield hit his first homer on Thursday since June 26th.

Our View: Sheff is hitting just .219 with five home runs on the season. He endured a terrible second half last season when he hit just .203.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 6/24, 10:14 PM CT
The Tigers found failure at the ballpark tonight, falling 8-4 to the Cardinals, though designated hitter and recently-returned-from-injury slugger Gary Sheffield did what he could to boost his mates. Sheffield went 1-for-4, hitting his fourth homer of the season to total two RBIs and one runs scored on the night.

Our View: This was Sheff's first game since May 26th, hitting his first homer since May 23rd. Now that he's back he's already making noise and hopes to get the Tigers back in the fray for the AL Central.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 6/24, 2:52 PM CT
Gary Sheffield has recovered from his strained left oblique and has been activated from the DL, according to the AP. The team optioned Jeff Larish to Triple-A Toledo to make room on the roster for Sheffield. He will start tonight.

Our View: Sheffield was only hitting .213 with three homers over 136 at-bats prior to landing on the DL, so fantasy owners should wait until he proves effective before starting him again.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 6/24, 8:42 AM CT
Gary Sheffield could be activated from the DL as early as Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press. GM Dave Dombrowski noted that Sheffield was scheduled to fly to Detroit for a meeting with team officials today. Sheffield has been on a minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Lakeland since the start of last week as he recovered from a strained left oblique.

Our View: As long as Sheffield does not suffer any more setbacks with the injury, it is likely he will rejoin the active roster soon. He has been serving as the primary DH most of the time this season, and his return could impact the playing time of rookie Jeff Larish, who is currently working as the DH against righties.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 6/23, 8:59 AM CT
Gary Sheffield's return to the Tigers will be delayed as he missed two games over the weekend during his rehab assignment at Single-A Lakeland, according to the Detroit Free Press. He missed Friday's game to attend a graduation, and Saturday's game was rained out. Sheffield's upcoming schedule has not been set, and Manager Jim Leyland said, "I don't know how that's going to play out."

Our View: It was believed that Sheffield may rejoin the Tigers before Tuesday's series opener against the Cardinals, but now his return date in uncertain.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 6/15, 9:07 PM CT
Gary Sheffield, who is recovering from a strained left oblique, will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland Monday night, according to BlessYouBoys.com.

Our View: Manager Jim Leyland commented that he is going to let Sheffield tell the team when he feels ready to return. At that time, Jeff Larish will likely be shipped back to Triple-A Toledo.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 6/9, 9:37 PM CT
Gary Sheffield has begun taking swings and is set to begin hitting live BP Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Sheff is working his way back from a strained left oblique muscle. "I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that's what I feel good about," he said.

Our View: It's not clear exactly how far that light is, but it's good that Sheff is coming along. We'll continue to monitor his rehab.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 5/27, 7:30 PM CT
Detroit has placed designated hitter Gary Sheffield on the 15-day disabled list, suffering a left oblique strain during Monday's game against the Angels, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Sheffield suffered his injury starting out of the batter's box on a ground ball in his second at-bat. He pulled up lame about midway down the line, immediately turning to limp towards the dugout. To replace Sheffield, Detroit will purchase the contract of Jeff Larish from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. The team is expected to push Carlos Guillen into the DH role in the short-term future.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 5/25, 11:54 AM CT
Gary Sheffield is three RBI away from tying Andre Dawson for 32nd on the all-time list, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Sheffield has registered four RBI over his last two games, with three coming last night in a 19-3 win over Minnesota.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 5/22, 3:47 PM CT
Gary Sheffield served as the Tigers' DH and went 3-for-4 in Thursday's 9-2 win over the Mariners.

Our View: That was only his second multi-hit game in May, and he hasn't hit a home run over his last 20 games. He should remain on your bench.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 5/19, 11:00 AM CT
The Detroit News suggests that Gary Sheffield is expected to return to the lineup for the upcoming Seattle series, but as the Tigers' designated hitter. "He'll DH Tuesday and Wednesday," said Leyland, "and I hope for a third (consecutive game on Thursday)."

Our View: Sheffield won't be playing in the outfield so during interleague games at National League parks Sheff will likely be on the bench.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 5/17, 5:50 PM CT
Gary Sheffield is scheduled to get Saturday night off with Matt Joyce playing left field for the second straight game.

Our View: With the Tigers playing in an NL Park, Sheff is sitting against right-handers. It's possible that the veteran will be back in the lineup on Sunday when Arizona sends Randy Johnson to the mound.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 5/14, 8:10 PM CT
The Tigers team website reports that Gary Sheffield's days as a regular outfielder appear to be over. After just over a week in left field, Sheffield was out of the lineup on Wednesday for a day off. When he returns on Thursday, however, he'll be back at designated hitter. Manager Jim Leyland made the decision and talked with Sheffield about it prior to Wednesday's game. Leyland saw signs that Sheffield is still being bothered by his right shoulder, a sign Sheffield confirmed.

Our View: Leyland believes that playing the field and hitting isn't going to help the healing process, despite Sheff's desire to be both in the field and the batters box with claims it makes him a better hitter.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 5/10, 2:54 PM CT
Gary Sheffield will serve as the Tigers' DH against the Yankees today, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Manager Jim Leyland made the call to rest his shoulder, and to give Matt Joyce some action as the starter in left field.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 5/6, 7:47 AM CT
Gary Sheffield commented on his move from the DH spot to left field, according to CBSsports. Sheffield said, "I think DH is a position for guys who can't do nothing else. You have to accept it in your mind. I never realized how mental it is. I was noticing fans in the stands, popcorn vendors. I was noticing things I never noticed."

Our View: Sheffield replaced Jacque Jones in left field on Tuesday, who was designated for assignment. Magglio Ordonez covered the DH spot. It remains to be seen if Sheffield's previously sore shoulder will allow him to stay in the outfield.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 5/5, 6:05 PM CT
Gary Sheffield has been moved from the Tigers' designated hitter role into left field for tonight's game against Boston. Magglio Ordonez will serve in the DH role for Detroit.

Our View: Sheffield told manager Jim Leyland he would be more productive at the plate if he could be more involved in the game. In other words, he begged into the left field spot. Sheff is still nursing an injured shoulder, and defensively he is more of a liability than asset at this stage of his career.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 5/5, 12:44 PM CT
Gary Sheffield is 6-for-10 with two doubles, a homer, and two RBI lifetime against Daisuke Matsuzaka, tonight's opposing hurler for Boston, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Sheffield was given the day off to rest on Sunday, and could use another good outing against Dice-K, as he is only hitting .185 over 23 games this season, with five RBI.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 5/3, 2:16 PM CT
Detroit manager Gary Sheffield has informed the press he will be giving DH Gary Sheffield a day of rest on Sunday as the Tigers visit Minnesota, according to CBSSports.

Our View: Leyland also noted catcher Ivan Rodriguez will be getting the day off, but he suggested he could do that today. Stay tuned.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 4/30, 10:47 PM CT
Gary Sheffield had two hits and a stolen base on Wednesday night as he continues to struggle to find his stroke given the issues with his shoulder.

Our View: In what qualifies as a hot streak in his dismal season, Sheffield is 3-for-8 over the past two nights though he has just five RBI all season. It's really hard to predict just how much he will improve given that shoulder, but we would like to think he will find a way to be successful even if he has to change his approach a bit in the process.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 4/27, 10:44 PM CT
Detroit designated hitter Gary Sheffield continues to struggle, striking out in his final two at-bats Sunday to extend his hitless streak to 16.

Our View: Sheffield has admitted that he is playing through shoulder soreness. The question is whether he can continue to play with the injury and contribute in the process, or will future at-bats resemble his 0-16 drought.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 4/25, 4:18 PM CT
Gary Sheffield is back in the Tigers Friday starting lineup and will serve as the designated hitter.

Our View: Few players in the league have a history of playing hurt like Sheff. The Tigers offense has heated up and the right-handed slugger returns to take advantage of potential opportunities to produce for his fantasy owners.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 4/24, 4:05 PM CT
Gary Sheffield had some surprising news today, he might consider retiring if his shoulder doesn't come around, according to the AP. “It hurts. I can’t continue to go out there and play like that," Sheffield said. I’m not going to put myself through (more surgeries and rehabs) like the past. I’m not going to do that." He received a second cortisone shot on Wednesday to help with the pain.

Our View: Often times players talk of retirement when injured, but most often it's just talk. Sheffield is hitting only .192 on the year, and there is no doubt he is hurting, but we would be pretty shocked to see him call it quits in the middle of the season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsWednesday 4/23, 7:24 PM CT
The Detroit Tigers report hopes of seeing Gary Sheffield in the starting lineup on Friday, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: Sheffield has missed the last three games for the Tigers with an aching shoulder but the team believes is nearing a return to health. We will update as more information becomes available.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 4/22, 5:27 PM CT
Gary Sheffield received cortisone shots in both shoulders on Tuesday and is expected to miss at least two more games. "I was told three days is realistic," he informs the Detroit News.

Our View: For a guy who has received probably dozens of cortisone shots in his career, we'd think he'd know the timeline by now. Anyway, fantasy owners should continue to sit Sheffield.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 4/21, 10:44 AM CT
As expected, Gary Sheffield is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays. Sheffield is dealing with a sore right shoulder, and there is some speculation that he may end up on the DL. Carlos Guillen is at DH on Monday.

Our View: We already knew Sheff would be sitting out on Monday, but we simply wanted to confirm his status. We'll continue to follow his progress.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 4/20, 12:09 PM CT
Gary Sheffield wants team doctors to check out his sore right shoulder, according to the Detroit News. He will not be in today's starting lineup against Toronto, and stated, "When you have the surgery I had, you're going to have your good days and bad days. I kind of rushed it. I have work to do. I'm just trying to get it stronger. It was major surgery, and I have to get it to a point where I'm comfortable. Obviously I'm not. want to get it looked at. I want to know what's really going on, like exactly how much scar tissue I really need to break up, because it feels strange playing baseball when you can't do what you're capable of doing. It doesn't hurt as much as it did, but it still doesn't give me the range of motion that I need. When I try to swing harder, it slows it down even more. I didn't know it was going to be this tight."

Our View: We will keep you posted as to what the doctors tell Sheffield regarding his shoulder. He is only hitting 10-for-52 so far this season.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 4/15, 9:15 PM CT
Gary Sheffield, who is playing through some shoulder pain, hit his first home run of the season on Tuesday.

Our View: Sheff, who helped the Tigers to their second straight victory, had only one RBI coming into tonight's game. Sad isn't a strong enough word for what the Tigers offense has been. After two victories, and a combined 17 runs in the last two games, Detroit is poised to have some of their big bats break out.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 4/14, 10:23 AM CT
Gary Sheffield stated that the shoulder that he had surgery on in the off-season is bothering him right now, according to the Detroit Free Press. He noted, "I just have to keep putting in my work. I can't get discouraged." Sheffield also said the shoulder has bothered him more than he expected. But, on Saturday, some scar tissue in the shoulder tore, which he thinks will improve his range of motion.

Our View: Sheffield is hitting 5-for-28 so far, and hopefully he can get get stronger as the season progresses.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 4/12, 11:29 AM CT
Gary Sheffield is expected to be in the Tigers' lineup today, according to MLB.com. Sheffield took Friday off after experiencing swelling in his injured right ring finger on the Tigers' Friday morning flight from Boston.

Our View: He is only hitting .190 over 21 at-bats this season, and the injury won't help matters.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 4/7, 8:00 AM CT
Gary Sheffield returned to the lineup on Sunday night after missing a couple games due to a torn tendon at the top of his left right finger. He went 1-for-3 with a walk against the White Sox. Sheffield will wear a splint for six weeks, but he takes it off and tapes the finger when batting, the Detroit News explains.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 4/4, 10:38 AM CT
Gary Sheffield will not play on Friday, but he is not going on the DL yet. Sheffield injured his left ring finger on Thursday. "He does have a torn tendon," manager Jim Leyland tells the Detroit News. "But not in an area where the trainers think it will affect his grip on the bat. When the swelling goes down, he should be able to play."
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 4/4, 12:17 AM CT
The degree to which Gary Sheffield's finger swells overnight will dictate his status going forward, according to The Detroit News. Sheffield jammed his left ring finger while sliding into second base in Thursday's game, tearing a tendon in the finger. Detroit has a day game Friday, so the chances of Sheffield playing would seem to be very slim. We'll keep you posted on his status.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 4/3, 5:57 PM CT
Gary Sheffield, who tore a tendon in his left ring finger Thursday when he slid into second base, left open the possibility that he would play Friday, but manager Jim Leyland said it's unlikely the DH will be available, according to the Detroit Free Press. Sheffield wore a splint on the finger after the game and said he had "no feeling" in the finger immediately after the injury. "I think I hit it on the base, but I'm not sure," he said. "I didn't notice it until I got in the dugout, looked at it, and it looked deformed." Sheff is as tough as nails, but this sounds like something that will keep him out of the lineup at least a few days. A DL stint is certainly possible. Marcus Thames would likely see the bulk of the time at DH if Sheffield misses significant time.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 4/3, 5:20 PM CT
Gary Sheffield tore a tendon in his left ring finger in the eighth inning of Thursday's game while sliding into second base, the AP reports. "He would have not been able to hit if we came around to him in the ninth," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I don't know how serious it was, but he couldn't bend it." There is still no word on how much time Sheffield will miss. If he does miss time, Marcus Thames figures to gain significant at-bats.

Gary Sheffield finally returned to action Tuesday after missing a few games due to leg cramps. It was almost as if he wasn't there in statistical terms, since he was 0-for-3 in the game, but it's good to see him back in the mix, nonetheless. Let's hope he can stay in the lineup and get ready for the regular season now.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSunday 3/9, 3:10 PM CT
Gary Sheffield skipped his third straight game on Sunday due to leg cramps, but he should return in a couple of days, according to the AP. "I’d be worried more if he was the shortstop, where you’ve got to play, take groundballs, make the double play," manager Jim Leyland said. "He’s probably not going to play the outfield to start with. If he’s able to hit to start with, that’s good enough for right now." The malady doesn't appear to be any big deal, but when you're talking about a 39-year-old, it's still something to pay attention to.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsSaturday 3/8, 9:12 AM CT
Leg cramps will keep Gary Sheffield from taking part in Saturday's exhibition game, according to the Detroit Free Press. "We're not going to take a chance with it," manager Jim Leyland said. Sheffield is 0-for-11 this spring, but clearly his health is of much more relevance right now.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 2/18, 7:36 PM CT
Gary Sheffield will apparently fill the role of DH this season for the Tigers and only rarely be used in the field according to a report on MLB.com. "I don't expect Sheffield to play in the outfield much, particularly in the start [of the season]," manager Jim Leyland said. "I want Sheffield to be ready to hit, and I'm not going to do anything to jeopardize that off the bat. He likes to play the outfield, but I have to watch that shoulder and make sure we can maximize his offensive skills." Sheffield should once again be a productive bat given his all-around offensive game, but his value will continue to be limited if he only qualifies at DH.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 2/12, 8:12 PM CT
Gary Sheffield said that he is swinging the bat “pain-free,” according to the Free Press. Sheffield began a rehab program in late November after undergoing shoulder surgery in October. Sheffield and the club believed his surgery last fall was to “clean up” his shoulder. But the surgeon found additional, unexpected damage: a torn labrum. Now it’s time to envision the healthy Sheffield in a lineup that has gained Miguel Cabrera and Edgar Renteria. If you take Sheffield’s performance in the 2 1/2 months before his injury, then project it over a full season, he would amass 50 homers and 135 RBIs.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 11/29, 11:31 AM CT
Gary Sheffield began a rehab program this week for the shoulder surgery he underwent in October, and he remains on track to be ready for spring training, according to the Detroit Free Press. That said, he may be limited to DH duty, as the Tigers have stated he may not be ready to play the outfield by then.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 10/8, 5:33 PM CT
Gary Sheffield underwent shoulder surgery Monday and is expected to be fully recovered for spring training, according to the AP. He'll wear a sling for about a month before beginning his rehab. Gary Sheffield will make a decision today on whether to have surgery on his right shoulder, according to the Detroit News. "They want to meet in the morning and discuss everything," Sheffield told The Detroit News by phone. "From there, I'll either have the surgery or not. I'm not sure what's going to happen until I meet with the doctor." When asked if retirement was a possibility, Sheffield responded, "It's hard to say," he said. "It's one thing to go through rehab. It's another thing to go through surgery with rehab. That's the part where you keep asking yourself, 'What am I doing and why?'" Check back over the next day or two as we learn what Sheffield's decision is.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsMonday 10/1, 9:27 AM CT
Gary Sheffield should know by Thursday whether he will undergo surgery on his ailing right shoulder or simply rehab the injury. "It's going to be a tough decision either way," Sheffield told the Detroit Free Press. "It's based on what they (the doctors) tell me, and then I go from there. The more times you have surgery on something, the more chances you're taking. This (would) be the third surgery I've had on this shoulder." Regardless, Sheffield's health will be a concern the remainder of his career.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 9/6, 2:57 PM CT
Gary Sheffield was activated from the DL Thursday and was back in the starting lineup for Tigers, batting third and serving as the DH. His return was an uneventful one, as he went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Owners should know that Sheffield could very well struggle over the final month, especially in the power department, so be careful to keep expectations reasonable.

The Tigers hope Gary Sheffield will be ready to return from the DL when he is eligible on September 6. "That's what the thought process is," GM Dave Dombrowski said in the Detroit Free Press. "After the game (Sunday), they told me he made significant strides, but apparently he didn't feel as good (Monday) morning. We always knew that if it got to where we knew for sure that he wouldn't play (by) the middle of this week, we'd put him on the DL, because we need another person here to help us win games." Sheffield was placed on the DL Monday with a shoulder injury that has plagued him for awhile.

Gary Sheffield said he might not travel with the Tigers for their trip to Kansas City for a series that begins Tuesday. In fact, when asked if it's possible that he might be done for the season, Sheff said, "I can't say. I really can't say," according to the Detroit Free Press. His shoulder is so sore right now, that he can't even do light exercises. He may end up undergoing surgery to repair the problem at some point, though he's holding out hope of continuing his season.

Gary Sheffield is expected to miss at least the rest of the Tigers' current homestand while he tries once and for all to calm down an aching right shoulder that has bothered him for much of the last two months, MLB.com reports. "It's time for me to shut it down and get myself right," Sheffield said, "because I'm doing myself and the team a disservice by trying to play hurt. It's one thing to be hurting and one thing to be injured. And I'm on the side of injured."

Gary Sheffield returned to action on Wednesday, going 1-for-4 at the plate. It was his first start since August 1, as he was battling a sore left shoulder. A cortisone shot Sunday seemed to do the trick, but his status for Thursday's game will depend on how the joint responds to Wednesday's action.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsTuesday 8/7, 8:54 AM CT
Gary Sheffield got a cortisone shot in his left shoulder on Sunday and should be back in the lineup within a couple of days. Sheffield, who has missed four straight games because of an ailing right shoulder, got a shot in the left shoulder because he had been overcompensating and it became aggravated. "I'm not sure I'll get all the strength back," Sheffield told the Detroit Free Press. "I'm hoping to get enough back to play." Sheffield will be a risky fantasy play until he proves he can produce despite playing at less than 100 percent.

Gary Sheffield, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, was feeling better on Saturday, but manager Jim Leyland doesn't expect the slugger to be ready to play until at least Monday, according to the AP. He has been sidelined with the injury since August 1.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsFriday 8/3, 7:59 PM CT
Gary Sheffield will not need to go on the disabled list, as his shoulder injury isn’t as serious as he first feared. The AP reported that Sheffield’s collar bone was pushed out of place and causing numbness and soreness in his right shoulder. Sheffield said the injury happened when he fell on his right elbow in a collision with second baseman Placido Polanco on July 21. Sheffield began taking medicine on Thursday and started therapy and rehab on Friday.

Our View: If he’s not going on the DL, we expect Sheffield to be back within the next week. We wouldn’t recommend him for weekly lineups starting on Monday at this point, but hopefully he would be back after that.
Gary Sheffield, LF, New York MetsThursday 8/2, 10:23 AM CT
Gary Sheffield admits he's concerned about his ailing right shoulder. "There's numbness in my grip," Sheffield told the Detroit News. "My whole right side [doesn't feel right]. Even when I'm wiggling the bat like I do, I get numbness in my hands. I don't know what's going on." Manager Jim Leyland says he'll give Sheffield some rest if that’s what the slugger needs to get healthy.

Gary Sheffield sat out Wednesday's game because of pain in his right shoulder that resulted from a collision with Placido Polanco last Saturday. According to the Detroit News, Sheffield was to receive a cortisone shot on Wednesday night – his second one in two weeks in the same area. It's unclear how much more action Sheffield will miss, if any. Arnold pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute steroids in 2006 and was sentenced to three months in prison. Sheffield is seemingly immune to the multiple off-the-field distractions that seem to follow him around and the steroid investigations continue to move at a snail's pace, so don't expect this to affect Sheffield's play in the near future.

Gary Sheffield says he has "no idea" when his appeal of a three-game suspension will be heard, the AP reports. Umpire Greg Gibson ejected Sheffield after the slugger argued a strike call, then broke his bat on a groundout and threw away the piece of wood still in his hands. The Tigers play nine straight games in NL parks beginning Friday, for what it's worth, visiting Philadelphia, Washington and Atlanta, so there may be some incentive for Sheffield, who's been mostly a DH this season, to serve the suspension over this time frame.

Gary Sheffield, who is recovering from left wrist surgery, is willling to shift to first base, if needed, according to the AP. "I talked to Sheff Sunday, before he left, and just told him that there's no guarantee that this makes him odd man out just because we got a right fielder (Bobby Abreu)," manager Joe Torre said. "We may just have to find some other thing to do. I didn't specifically say first base the other day, but we did today. He, Don (Mattingly) and myself talked today. He's already working drills with Donnie." The Yanks hold a $13 million option on Sheffield for the 2007 season.

Although general manager Brian Cashman said that this wasn't necessarily the case, the fact that the Yankees traded for Bobby Abreu makes it difficult to believe that they will pick up the $13 million option on the contract of Gary Sheffield in 2007, according to the official team website. The Yankees are already locked into Abreu, Johnny Damon, and Hideki Matsui next season, which without Sheffield totals $41 million.
