Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 11/6, 3:01 PM CT
Mariano Rivera has said he would like to pitch for five more seasons, according to the New York Times.

Our View: Despite Rivera being nearly 40, this is not what the rest of baseball wanted to hear. In 2009 he was 44-of-46 on save opportunities and posted another microscopic ERA of 1.76.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesTuesday 11/3, 3:29 PM CT
Mariano Rivera is the only closer of the eight to make the playoffs this season not to blow a save, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.

Our View: Remarkable. After Rivera finally appeared to be slowing down in 2007 (3.15 ERA, .248 batting average against), he has been better than ever the past two seasons, posting a 1.40 ERA in 2008, and 1.76 one in 2009. Just like always, he can treated as a top three closer in next season's fantasy drafts.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 11/1, 10:10 PM CT
Mariano Rivera was seen in the bullpen applying a heating pad to his right rib cage area during Sunday's Game 4. There has been no indication of an injury.

Our View: Rivera threw two innings in Saturday night's win and Joe Girardi said before the game that he did not want to use his closer more than one inning in Game 4. The pad could simply be used to keep the Sandman warm.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesTuesday 10/20, 3:42 PM CT
Mariano Rivera has been exonerated by Major League Baseball in "spitgate," according to the New York Post.

Our View: The evidence against him was inconclusive at best. His legend grows.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesTuesday 10/20, 12:12 PM CT
Mariano Rivera is being investigated for possibly spitting on a ball in game three of the ALCS, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Rivera pulled a real Houdini-act in the tenth inning of Monday's game, getting out of a runners on the corners, no outs jam. Video and images appear to show him spitting on a ball before he threw a pitch to Erick Aybar, who was batting with a runner on second and no outs. It would be nice if Rivera's nearly mythical dominance could be attributed to something, but the evidence appears inconclusive at best, and will probably only serve to further place him inside opposing hitters' heads.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 10/18, 1:35 PM CT
Mariano Rivera's 2.1 innings in game two of the ALCS on Saturday night marked the first time he had thrown more than two innings since May 30, 2006.

Our View: He threw three that day against the Tigers. His dominance has gotten to the point where it is almost comical. His last postseason run was allowed on October 4, 2005, a span of 15.2 innings.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 10/14, 6:40 PM CT
Mariano Rivera has been named the Delivery Man of the Year for 2009, according to MLB.com.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 10/11, 9:55 PM CT
Mariano Rivera picked up a four-out save on Sunday to shut the door on the Metrodome. The Yankees won 4-1 in the last game in the stadium. He struck out two and allowed one single.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 9/6, 7:34 AM CT
Updating a previous report, the New York Post is reporting that Yankees' manager Joe Girardi may be hesitant to use closer Mariano Rivera on Sunday. Rivera threw a pain-free bullpen session on Saturday, but Girardi doesn't want to risk further damage by rushing him back.

Our View: It will be interesting to see what Girardi decides to do if today's game requires a save, as Rivera has declared himself ready to go and would likely let Girardi know he wants to pitch. Phil Hughes could be used as well, but he picked up a four-out save Saturday night, so Girardi may hesitate to use him back-to-back days as well. For Mo owners, keep him active, as he will return soon if he doesn't pitch today.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSaturday 9/5, 12:48 PM CT
The Associated Press reprots that closer Mariano Rivera (groin) threw a pain-free bullpen session on Saturday, and will be available to pitch on Sunday.

Our View: Rivera said all along that he could pitch through the injury if this were the playoffs, so he should be 100 percent if he gets called on to close tomorrow against the Blue Jays.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 9/4, 5:53 PM CT
Mariano Rivera is slated for a pen session Saturday, and is hopeful of returning to the Yankees Sunday, according to Sports Illustrated. He is recovering from a sore groin.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 9/3, 6:44 PM CT
The Boston Globe is reporting that Yankees' closer Mariano Rivera threw in the outfield before Thursday's game and his injured groin felt much better. Rivera is hoping to throw off a bullpen mound in the next few days, and he should be able to return soon.

Our View: The Yankees are in pretty good shape for the playoffs right now, but they still need their closer to be 100 percent as soon as possible. Tonight was a very good sign, and expect him to be ready to get back on the field soon.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 9/2, 10:43 PM CT

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 8/12, 6:31 PM CT

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 7/1, 10:15 PM CT
Mariano Rivera earned his 20th save in tonight's 4-2 win over the Mariners at Yankee Stadium. He did not allow a hit or walk over one full inning of work.

Our View: He has only blown one save chance all season, and has 502 saves for his career. He did not allow a run over his last six appearances as well.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 6/28, 11:01 PM CT
Mariano Rivera picked up his 500th career save on Sunday as the Yankees beat the Mets 4-2. Rivera went 1.1 innings and allowed one hit while striking out two.

Our View: 500 saves is majorly impressive, and it just goes to show how good this guy really is. He may be the best closer of our time, and he is still getting the job done today. Expect him to have well over 500 before his career is done.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 6/25, 11:19 PM CT
Mariano Rivera collected his 17th save of the season in tonight's 11-7 win at Atlanta. He did not allow a hit or a walk over one third of an inning.

Our View: Rivera is a perfect 7-for-7 on save chances in June. Four closers co-lead the majors with 20 saves, and Rivera is not far behind. Rivera needs one more save for 500 for his career as well.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesTuesday 6/16, 11:55 PM CT
Mariano Rivera nailed down his 15th save in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Nationals at Yankee Stadium. He hurled a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Our View: He is a perfect 5-for-5 on save chances in June, and is three saves away from 500 for his career.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 5/7, 9:53 PM CT
Mariano Rivera took his first loss of the season in Thursday's 8-6 loss to the Rays. He gave up two ninth inning solo home runs to Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria.

Our View: In his last 4.1 innings, Rivera has given up all five of his runs that he has allowed this season. Those runs have come courtesy of four home runs and it looks like the Sandman is going through a rare hittable stretch.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 4/10, 7:05 PM CT
Mariano Rivera earned his first save of the season on Friday in the Yankees 4-1 win over the Royals. He threw a scoreless ninth, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Our View: Rivera is still a top fantasy closer, and may actually see more save opportunities with A-Rod on the shelf. The Yanks are less likely to blow out opponents without his bat in the heart of the lineup.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 3/19, 11:12 PM CT
Mariano Rivera made his second outing of the spring in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Blue Jays. He allowed no hit, walks, or runs in the effort.

Our View: That makes two perfect outings for the closer, and it doesn't appear that there are any lingering effects from his offseason shoulder surgery. He should threaten 40 saves again while producing stellar peripherals.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 3/18, 1:25 PM CT
Mariano Rivera indicated that he felt fine after pitching for the first time in an exhibition game, according to ESPN. Rivera, who is coming off October shoulder surgery, threw a perfect inning (with two strikeouts) in Tuesday's 9-2 win over the Pirates.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSaturday 2/14, 8:19 PM CT

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesTuesday 1/27, 11:17 AM CT
Mariano Rivera, who underwent surgery to remove a calcified joint from his right shoulder, is yet to start throwing, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He generally does not pitch many innings in spring training in the Grapefruit League, and the club is optimistic he will be ready to go for opening day. The 39-year-old vet was bothered by the shoulder ailment for most of last season, but he still managed to nail down 39 saves with a dominant 0.67 WHIP.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 11/23, 3:46 PM CT
Mariano Rivera is not expected to pitch in the World Baseball Classic for Panama while recovering from shoulder surgery, according to MLB.com.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 10/3, 3:46 PM CT
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will have surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday to repair calcification on the AC joint, according to Yankees.com.

Our View: Rivera is expected to be ready to pitch in spring training, but shoulder injuries can be tricky to deal with. That said, he did pitch most of the season with the pain, and was as dominant as ever, sporting a 0.67 WHIP.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesMonday 9/29, 2:27 PM CT
Mariano Rivera will have off-season surgery on his ailing right shoulder but should be ready to throw by spring training, according to the AP.

Our View: The procedure will shave down calcification of the A.C. joint on the top of Rivera’s shoulder. The surgery hasn’t been scheduled, but manager Joe Girardi said it doesn’t appear to be a serious injury and there is no structural damage. The date for the surgery and where it will be performed should be set later this week. The 38-year-old nailed down 39 saves in 2008, with a microscopic 0.67 WHIP.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 9/26, 3:10 PM CT
Mariano Rivera's check up with the doctor found some bone spurs in his shoulder, and the initial recommendation is that he undergoes surgery to correct the issue, according to The Journal News. Rivera will seek a second opinion before going under the knife.

Our View: When you are 38 every surgery is major, even if it's just arthroscopic. Add in the fact that this is an issue with his shoulder, usually a bigger concern than an elbow, and we are slightly nervous. Given his tremendous work on the hill this season (1.43 ERA, 0.68 WHIP) it clearly didn't effect his performance, though any future efforts will need to be monitored closely if he has the operation.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 9/25, 6:12 PM CT
MLB.com reports that with no chance at a postseason entry, the Yankees permitted Mariano Rivera to leave the club on Thursday to complete his end-of-season physical examination in New York. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he had no plans to use the 38-year-old on Wednesday or Thursday after he pitched in four of the club's last five games, including the final inning at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. Girardi said the trip should not be construed as an injury issue.

Our View: If you own Rivera, it's time to find someone else to take his place. Rivera had the lowest WHIP of his career in 2008 at 0.68.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 9/21, 11:11 PM CT
Mariano Rivera earned his 38th save of the season in what is almost certainly the last game in Yankee Stadium history on Sunday night. Only a miracle finish and a complete Boston collapse could could lead to more game action in the historic yard.

Our View: Rivera lowered his ERA to 1.45 in his bid to eclipse his career best mark of 1.38. He won't make it unless he pitches nearly every day the rest of the way as he will need four scoreless innings to blow past the mark. He has been as dominating as any pitcher in baseball this season no matter what his final ERA is.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 9/19, 4:12 PM CT
The New York Daily News manager Joe Girardi says that he would like Mariano Rivera to pitch the final inning at Yankee Stadium regardless of whether it's a save situation because "rightfully, in the ninth inning there's only one guy to have on the mound."

Our View: If the game is tied, this becomes an interesting decision. We shouldn't have to tell you to have the Sandman in your lineup on Sunday and everyday the Yankees play.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesMonday 9/15, 11:47 PM CT
With Mariano Rivera's save on Monday night he moved into second place all-time on the career saves list. The save was his 479th, according to the AP.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesMonday 9/15, 9:19 PM CT
It only took Mariano Rivera seven pitches to close the door on the Yankees 4-2 win over the White Sox, and record his 36th save of the year.

Our View: Rivera has only given up two earned runs over his last ten games and continues to lower his ERA and WHIP while he raises his number of saves.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSaturday 9/6, 11:57 PM CT
Mariano Rivera needed 13 pitches to get 1.1 innnings against the Mariners for his 33rd save of the season. He gave up no hits and lowered his ERA to 1.43.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/15, 11:21 PM CT
Mariano Rivera picked up his fifth loss of the year Friday, allowing a run to cross on a wild pitch in the Yanks' 5-4 defeat to Kansas City. Mo allowed two hits but struck out two in his inning.

Our View: We'll cut Mo some slack. His ERA on the year ballooned to 1.70 with this outing.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesTuesday 8/12, 11:47 PM CT
The first blown save of the season was suffered by Yankee future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera, giving up a three-run homer to Minnesota outfielder Delmon Young in the bottom of the eighth inning to surrender a lead and force extra innings.

Our View: The homer was one of just two hits allowed by Rivera, an unusual failure in an otherwise stellar season (again) for Rivera.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/3, 6:49 PM CT
Mariano Rivera was unavailable on Sunday because of back spasms, according to the Associated Press. Rivera doesn't believe the injury is serious and hopes to be available on Monday.

Our View: Rivera hasn't been slowed by hitters at all this season so the only thing that might be able to do so appears to be injury. Given that the issues seems minor, it doesn't look like even injuries will keep him down.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/1, 9:16 PM CT
Mariano Rivera gave up a game losing hit to Torii Hunter on Friday night to pick up his fourth loss of the season for the Yankees.

Our View: Rivera still sports a 1.49 ERA in 44 appearances after allowing a single run tonight. Look for him to bounce back in his next outing.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 7/23, 4:33 PM CT
Mariano Rivera picked up his 25th save of the season on Wednesday by retiring the only batter he faced in the Yankees victory over the Yankees.

Our View: Rivera has 25 saves against zero blown saves. If not for the work of Francisco Rodriguez, Rivera would likely be the talk of AL relievers at this point as he has been simply marvelous.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 7/10, 1:52 PM CT
Mariano Rivera could start for the American League in the All-Star Game, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: That would be quite a change for the Yankees closer. He started 10 games his rookie year, but has yet to make a start since.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 7/6, 11:05 PM CT
Mariano Rivera pitched two innings of one-hit ball to earn his third win of the season. He threw just 16 pitches, 13 for strikes, to get six Boston batters out.

Our View: The Sandman still has it a night after nearly blowing a save against his rivals.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSaturday 7/5, 5:59 PM CT
Mariano Rivera made it extremely interesting on Saturday night before nailing down his 23rd save of the year against the Red Sox. Rivera allowed a run, two hits, and hit Manny Ramirez with a pitch before picking up the save.

Our View: Rivera has been so tremendous this year that he is bound to suffer a hiccup or two, but the fact that he still managed to earn a save in one of those outings is very encouraging.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSaturday 6/28, 7:36 PM CT
Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth inning helping the Yankees defeat the Mets 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Our View: Rivera has yet to blow a save this year in 22 chances.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesSunday 6/15, 7:54 AM CT
Mariano Rivera is 38-years old but rarely is he thought of as old, or past his prime. In fact the right-hander is showing no indication he is regressing as a pitcher. The Yanks closer is 18 for 18 in saves; and his 0.87 ERA, 9.3 K/9 and 0.9 BB/9 can't be ignored.

Our View: After watching Papelbon blow his third save of the season on Saturday, to match his total of 2007, it's hard to consider him the automatic he was in April or even the top closer in the game without mentioning Rivera.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 6/11, 10:01 PM CT
Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera has appeared in four consecutive games, but manager Joe Girardi has hinted they will not look his way tonight, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Girardi was asked about Riveria's workload before the game and noted that he had intended to leave him be on Tuesday night as well, but Rivera was up and stretching before he realized what was going on in the bullpen. Tonight, he should have the day off.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 6/11, 12:17 AM CT
The Yankees keep trotting Mariano Rivera out to the hill. The closer picked up his 17th save by tossing a scoreless inning against the A's on Tuesday night. Rivera has now worked four straight games. He allowed runs on Saturday and Monday.

Our View: With Joba Chamberlain in the rotation, the Yankees clearly aren't taking any chances with the game on the line. We imagine Rivera won't be available on Wednesday night, no matter what the scenario.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesMonday 6/2, 2:48 PM CT
Mariano Rivera has been named the AL Player of the Week, according to the AP. He earned the honor by nailing down three saves, with seven strikeouts, and only one hit allowed.

Our View: He is a perfect 15-for-15 on saves opportunities, and lowered his ERA to 0.36. He ranks third on the all-time saves list, but this is his first Player of the Week honor.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/28, 11:07 PM CT
Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect 9th inning Wednesday to earn his 13th save of the year in 13 opportunities. He struck out one batter.

Our View: Mo certainly hasn't been pitching like a guy who turned 38 over the offseason. He boasts a 0.39 ERA and 0.52 WHIP with 21 Ks and just one walk in 23 innings this year.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/14, 9:46 PM CT
Mariano Rivera earned his 11th save of the season as the Yankees ended the Rays' six-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.

Our View: Rivera worked a perfect ninth inning striking out one.

Mariano Rivera gave up his the first run all season on Tuesday night when Gabe Gross hit an RBI single giving Tampa Bay a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees sending the Rays into first place in the AL East.

Our View: Rivera has been outstanding this year. His .056 ERA and 13 strikeouts to zero walks in 16 innings pitched, is as good as it gets. While most consider Jon Papelbon the best ninth inning option in baseball, one could argue that the Yankee veteran still reigns.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/7, 5:52 PM CT
Mariano Rivera was awarded the DHL Major League Delivery Man of the Month of April, according to MLB.com. Rivera went 8-for-8 on the month with a perfect 0.00 ERA.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesMonday 4/14, 9:47 PM CT
Mariano Rivera cleaned up the bullpen's mess on Monday and recorded his fourth save of the season. Rivera worked a spotless 1.1 innings after Billy Traber and Brian Bruney allowed four runs over 1.2 frames.

Mariano Rivera will make his first appearance of the spring on Friday, this according to a report on the AP. Rivera is coming off his worst season of his career, though 30 saves and a 1.12 WHIP certainly are a great floor for a closer, so draft Rivera as a top-10 closer with confidence yet again.

Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 11/16, 12:01 PM CT
Mariano Rivera and the Yankees are at a standstill in their contract talkss, as the closer is still looking for a guaranteed fourth year, while the Yanks aren't willing to give him one, according to Newsday. Regardless, the Yankees are still optimistic about getting a deal done. "I think that there is a good chance that he will return to the team," manager Joe Girardi said. That's still the prevailing sentiment around baseball circles, even with the negotiations stuck. At this point, another team hasn't offered Rivera a fourth year, so he may eventually have to give in and accept the three-year offer.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesThursday 11/15, 1:11 PM CT
FoxSports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Mariano Rivera has not accepted the Yankees' three-year, $45 million offer, because he's looking for a fourth year. Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesTuesday 11/13, 10:32 AM CT

Despite earlier comments that said otherwise, Mariano Rivera has stated that Joe Torre's departure won't affect his decision on whether or not he'll re-sign with the Yankees, according to Newsday. "I don't think [the identity of the new Yankees manager] has to do nothing, with me, in terms of signing with the Yankees," Rivera said. Even with this statement, it still seems likely that Rivera will test the free agent market before signing anywhere.
Mariano Rivera, P, New York YankeesFriday 7/13, 12:14 PM CT
