Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 9/4, 11:54 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in tonight's 6-3 loss to the Mariners at McAfee Coliseum. He hit a single and a two-run homer off Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Our View: Garciaparra hit his third homer of 2009, with his previous shot coming way back on May 23 against the Diamondbacks.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/6, 6:06 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the A's 6-4 loss to the Rangers on Thursday.

Our View: Nomar can produce when healthy, but healthy is not something that comes regularly for him these days. It seems like he is always tweaking a muscle or turning an ankle, and he is just not reliable enough to warrant fantasy consideration.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 7/31, 9:03 AM CT
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Nomar Garciaparra injured his quad running out an infield single in Thursday's game.

Our View: The oft-injured Garciaparra was lifted for a pinch runner, but didn't feel the injury was serious. He's being tested by team doctors and should be considered day-to-day for now, but don't be surprised if this turns out to be more than just a "tweak". It is Nomar after all.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 7/30, 4:25 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 3-for-4 with a run scored on Thursday in the A's 8-5 loss to the Red Sox. Garciaparra is hitting .272 on the season.

Our View: Nomar can still hit when he is healthy, but unfortunately it seems like he is rarely on the field long enough to contribute to a fantasy squad. He is still a little banged up, so find another option that provides more consistent production.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/12, 9:09 AM CT
According to MLB.com, A's infielder Nomar Garciaparra is expected to start at first base on Sunday in his team's game against the Rays. This will be the first time since July 3 that he has started a game at that position.

Our View: Nomar may see more time at first as his health improves, as it may be a platoon situation between Garciaparra and Jason Giambi. If he could get completely healthy and stay that way, he could be a fantasy contributor, but until he shows he can do that owners should stay away.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 7/8, 9:52 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is not expected to start Wednesday in the A's series finale against the Red Sox, according to MLB.com. The A's training staff has suggested a one-day-on, two-days-off approach with Garciaparra at this point.

Our View: Nomar will be available to pinch hit on his off days, but for now it looks like he will only be starting a few days a week. His fantasy value was already extremely low, but now he should probably not be owned in any format. You need a guy who will be in the lineup nearly every day.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/6, 8:56 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in tonight's 6-0 win at Boston.

Our View: Nomar started the game in the DH role, and enjoyed a solid outing against his former team. He has two hits in two of three games so far this month.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/6, 4:22 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will serve as the DH when the Athletics battle the Red Sox at Fenway Park tonight, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Nomar was among Boston's most popular players during his run with the club from 1997-2004. He is worth consideration for deeper fantasy leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/5, 8:39 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that A's infielder Nomar Garciaparra was removed from Saturday's game in the sixth inning for precautionary reasons. Manager Bob Geren told the media that the move was made due to the score of the game and the fact the Nomar hasn't seen much time on the field.

Our View: Nomar is unreliable due to his fading health, and his fantasy value is gone at this point. He isn't quite 100 percent yet, but expect to see him on the field a bit more often going forward.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 7/3, 9:30 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra got the start at first base on Friday and made the most of it. The oft-injured hitter went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the A's embarrassing 15-3 loss to the Indians.

Our View: The RBI was just Nomah's tenth this season, and despite all the fond memories he has joined many others in the realm of fantasy irrelevance.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 6/19, 10:22 AM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Oakland A's infielder Nomar Garciaparra will be limited to pinch hitting duties for the rest of the week due to his chronic calf troubles. Garciaparra may also DH when the team returns to AL play, as the A's don't want to risk hurting the calf anymore.

Our View: Nomar's chronic calf injury is likely to hinder him the rest of the season, and unless he really starts tearing it up at the dish he may find himself riding the pine for the majority of the season. If he can't play the field on a regular basis, the team can't afford to play him everyday at DH, considering his .259 average. His is a risky fantasy play going forward, even in Al-only leagues. Find someone who you can count on being in the lineup before you take a chance on Nomar.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 6/13, 1:16 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the A's have activated infielder Nomar Garciaparra off the DL. In a corresponding move, the team sent Aaron Cunningham to Triple-A Sacramento. Garciaparra was out with a strained right calf.

Our View: Garciaparra had a pinch-hit single last night after being activated before the game, and he is expected to be in the lineup today. Check back to make sure he is playing, but he should be safe to deploy in fantasy lineups.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/9, 8:59 AM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Nomar Garciaparra took ground balls on Monday. He still has not started running as he recovers from a strained right calf.

Our View: Nomar looks to be a long way off from returning, but the fact that he is taking a few grounders is a good sign. Things should progress quickly when he is able to start running, but it looks like next week could be the earliest he could return. It may be later than that, however.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 6/7, 7:41 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is hitting off a tee, but is yet to start running while recovering from a strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 5/27, 1:42 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right calf, according to TSN. Pitcher Jeff Gray was recalled from the minors as the adjoining move.

Our View: This is the second time his calf has landed him on the DL this season. He only held value in AL-only leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 5/26, 7:12 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra sat out his second straight game Monday with tenderness in his right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: That is the same calf that landed him on the DL last month. Manager Bob Geren is hoping Garciaparra is ready to return for tonight's home game against Seattle.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/25, 7:22 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra got his first day off Sunday since being activated from the DL two days earlier, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: He was an option for the DH role, but skipper Bob Geren decided to go with Jack Cust instead. Saturday's game went 11 innings, and Geren wanted to give Garciaparra some rest.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 5/22, 8:35 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Nomar Garciaparra was activated from the 15-day DL on Friday and he was in the starting lineup at first base for the A's. He had been recovering from a strained calf. He has not played since April 29.

Our View: Nomar has not been a fantasy factor this season and he probably won't see regular enough playing time to be worth consideration. He was hitting .231 at the time of his injury.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 5/20, 8:17 AM CT
The A's will decide if Nomar Garciaparra is fit to come off the DL today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He has been recovering from a strained right calf.

Our View: Garciaparra will provide needed depth in the A's infield, but his fantasy value will be limited to AL-only leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/18, 5:50 PM CT
The Contra Costa Times reports that Nomar Garciaparra, who is dealing with a sore right calf, ran the bases, took ground balls, and took batting practice prior to Monday's game. He is expected to be activated from the DL on Wednesday.

Our View: Garciaparra would likely join Bobby Crosby at third base, but could also spell Jason Giambi some across the diamond. He does not hold much, if any, fantasy value.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/18, 7:34 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra's ailing right calf was sore following his workout Saturday, and it seems that Wednesday might be the best day for him to come off the DL, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: The A's will face Rays' lefty Scott Kazmir on Wednesday. Garciaparra will provide depth to Oakland's infield, but won't hold much fantasy value outside of AL-only leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 5/14, 7:11 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra ran the bases Wednesday and noted that was the first time he really pushed it since landing on the DL with a strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Manager Bob Geren expects to activate Garciaparra either this weekend at Detroit or early next week. He will provide needed depth to the A's infield, but his fantasy value is limited to AL-only leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/11, 7:41 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra took batting practice on the field, and he feels that he is making progress in his recovery from a strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: This is encouraging, but Garciaparra is still unsure if he will be ready to come off the DL when eligible on Friday.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 5/8, 7:24 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra did some light running Thursday and could be activated from the DL a week from today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is recovering from a strained right calf.

Our View: The A's will be pleased to get him back to provide depth in the infield, but he only holds fantasy value in deeper leagues, with a .231 average over 39 at-bats.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 5/6, 7:31 AM CT
Manager Bob Geren is hopeful that Nomar Garciaparra will be ready to come off the DL when first eligible May 14, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is recovering from a strained right calf.

Our View: Garciaparra is only hitting .231 over 39 at-bats this season, and is only worth holding in deeper AL-only leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/4, 7:30 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went to Boston to work with a physical therapist for his strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Garciaparra could return to the diamond in mid-May, barring a setback. He was only hitting .231 over 39 at-bats, and should only be stashed in deeper AL-only leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/29, 10:45 AM CT
Infielder Nomar Garciaparra will land on the 15-day DL on Wednesday due to a right calf strain, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Our View: For Nomar, a "strain" could lead to months on the sidelines. Mark Ellis will also land on the disabled list, and the A's may need to lean more heavily on Bobby Crosby as a utility infielder.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 4/28, 8:14 PM CT
According to the San Fransisco Chronicle, Nomar Garciaparra left Tuesday's game in the second inning with tightness in his calf. He was replaced in the lineup by Bobby Crosby.

Our View: Nomar dealt with this same issue earlier in the season and appears to have re-aggravated the injury. He may be looking at a DL stint, but we don't yet know the seriousness of the injury.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 4/25, 6:33 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI as Oakland beat Tampa Bay 5-2 on Saturday.

Our View: Nomar is 3-for-8 since returning from a calf injury that kept him out for nearly a week. He started at third base and hit sixth today, but was lifted for defensive purposes later in the game.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 4/23, 7:14 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was held out of Wednesday's game due to cold weather and damp field conditions, but skipper Bob Geren expects Garciaparra to start Friday against the Rays at McAfee Coliseum, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Garciaparra is only hitting .179 over 28 at-bats this season, and should be left for AL-only and deeper mixed leagues for Friday.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/22, 8:20 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra sat out for the fourth time in five games Tuesday with calf tightness, but skipper Bob Geren noted that Garciaparra may be able to return today against the Padres, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Garciappara is hitting a mere .179 over 28 at-bats this season, and is only worth consideration for AL-only and deeper mixed leagues.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 4/19, 12:05 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was out of Oakland's lineup with a tight right calf for the second straight game on Sunday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Garciaparra seems to have carved out an everyday role in Oakland's lineup when healthy, although that's been a huge problem for him throughout his career. His value seems limited to AL-only or very deep mixed leagues at the moment.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 4/17, 4:52 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Nomar Garciaparra will be back in the A's lineup for their Friday evening game against Toronto.

Our View: He was held out of Wednesday's game as a precaution, so he is ready to go tonight. Feel free to put him back in your lineup as well.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 4/16, 9:06 AM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Nomar Garciaparra's right calf injury is not that serious and that he withheld playing on Wednesday as a precaution. He hopes to be back in the lineup on Friday.

Our View: Nomar missed nearly two months of last season with a similar injury. He is among the more injury prone players out there, and his performance so far this season does not warrant much fantasy consideration.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/15, 2:47 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was not in the lineup on Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is still nursing a tight calf.

Our View: Garciaparra indicated that this is not a major issue and that he is just being cautious. He should be back soon for the A's. Bobby Crosby will start at third with Eric Chavez still out.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/15, 7:32 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was forced out of Tuesday's game against Boston after one inning due to tightness in his right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: He started the game at third base, and was replaced by Bobby Crosby. His status is uncertain for Wednesday's game.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 4/14, 12:20 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra started and played all nine innings at third base in the A's 8-2 win over the Red Sox on Monday. He was 1-for-4 with a solo home run off of Jon Lester.

Our View: There's no doubt that Garciaparra enjoyed notching his first round-tripper of the season against the Red Sox, who seemingly gave up on him earlier in his career. However, the veteran did strikeout twice in the game and is hitting just .217 to start the season.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 4/13, 7:35 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will cover first base for tonight's home game against Boston, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Jason Giambi will serve in the DH role.

Our View: Garciaparra is only 1-for-9 at McAfee Coliseum so far this season, but may have some success against his former team tonight.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 4/6, 7:37 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Nomar Garciaparra will start at first base for Oakland on opening day. Jason Giambi will DH, Jack Cust will start in right, and Travis Buck and Daric Barton will start the game as a reserve.

Our View: The team feels this is there best lineup against left-handers, at least for the time being. Although Nomar was not expected to be an everyday player, it appears that the team is wanting to squeeze him into the lineup ahead of their younger players.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/30, 7:03 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored as the A's beat the Dodgers 9-5 on Monday. He started at first base in the game.

Our View: Depending on the health of Eric Chavez, who started today at third, Nomar could be the opening day third baseman. It would appear he has less of a chance at anchoring first base as the roster includes Daric Barton and Jason Giambi. He is hitting .407 through 27 spring at-bats.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 3/22, 12:09 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was 2-for-3 on Saturday as the A's fell to the Giants 8-4. He is an even hitting .500 this spring.

Our View: Nomar should see a decent number of at-bats this season even though he doesn't have a true position. When healthy he can still hit, but his power is essentially gone now.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/16, 11:59 AM CT
Manager Bob Geren said the Nomar Garciaparra will play "quite a bit" at third base this season, regardless of Eric Chavez's health, and will also see time at shortstop, first base and designated hitter, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View: While he may or may not be in the starting lineup Opening Day, it looks like Garciaparra's versatility will allow him to play much more than the typical reserve, which could give him nice value as a late-round sleeper in AL-only drafts. As always, he'll have to stay healthy if he wants to provide any value, something he's had a very tough time with throughout his career.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/6, 1:01 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra officially joins the Athletics as his deal has been finalized, according to the Associated Press. It is a one-year deal, but financial details were not disclosed.

Our View: The 35-year-old vet will provide a right-handed bat at the corner infield spots, and his fantasy value looks to be limited. He could also see time in the DH spot.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 3/3, 2:45 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra has reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Athletics, according to the SF Chronicle. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 2/26, 11:45 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will either decide to sign with the Oakland A's or opt for retirement, according to the Contra Costa Times. When he will make his decision has not been determined.

Our View: The 35-year-old Garciaparra, who hit .264 in 55 games with the Dodgers a season ago, was reportedly being pursued by the Phillies as well, but they have seemingly withdrawn their name from contention.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 2/23, 9:13 AM CT
Oakland is offering Nomar Garciaparra more at-bats than Philadelphia, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View: If the A's do sign Garciaparra, it would not stop them from continuing their pursuit of Orlando Cabrera.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 2/21, 12:29 PM CT
ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that the Oakland A's are interested in Nomar Garciaparra to help balance out their lineup, which is weighed down with left-handed hitters.

Our View: Last season with the Dodgers, Garciaparra went 19-for-56 with four homers and a gaudy 1.067 OPS against left-handed pitching.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 2/6, 7:04 AM CT
The Phillies are still interested in Nomar Garciaparra, according to the Wilmington News Journal.

Our View: The club does not expect an answer from him until the start of spring training, as the 35-year-old is still deciding if he wants to continue playing. He would fill the Phillies' need for a right-handed bat for the bench.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 2/3, 8:10 PM CT
The Philadelphia Phillies still consider Nomar Garciaparra as their first choice for a right-handed hitter off the bench, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Garciaparra is 35-years old and has not decided on whether or not he will play in 2009. Garciaparra has been slowed by injuries over the last couple of years but could provide value in a limited role.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 1/21, 8:54 AM CT
The Philadelphia Phillies are interested in signing Nomar Garciaparra, though it's unknown if he is going to retire, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: Philly has a need for a right-handed hitter off the bench, which is what Garciaparra would offer. He is now 35 years old, is an injury waiting to happen, and is far removed from the player he once was.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 1/9, 4:35 PM CT
Fox Sports reports that free-agent infielder Nomar Garciaparra will be pursued by the Phillies.

Our View: The 35-year-old has been consistently injured since leaving Boston in 2004. He would have to take a significant paycut no matter where he signs. His limited role would make him virtually worthless for fantasy purposes.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 10/12, 6:09 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will start at first base and hit fifth on Sunday against left-hander Jamie Moyer, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. In Nomar's postseason career he is batting .318 (34 for 107) with a .380 on-base percentage, a .598 slugging percentage, seven HRs and 23 RBI.

Our View: Garciaparra hit .339 against left-handers this season. He is replacing James Loney in the lineup who has hit .249 against southpaws this season.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 10/11, 8:23 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will likely start at first base when the Dodgers face the Phillies in Game 3 of the NLCS, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

Our View: James Loney is 3-for-7 in the series, but Garciaparra smoked lefties this year (1.067 OPS) and the Dodgers are going up against Jamie Moyer.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 9/28, 7:04 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will manage the Dodgers today, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Joe Torre traditionally hands the managing role to a veteran on the last day of the regular season. The Dodgers are the AL West champions and their finale at San Francisco holds no significance.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 9/25, 8:38 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra once again got the start over James Loney against the lefty starter Shawn Estes on Wednesday. Garciaparra once again made Torre look like a genius. He was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two runs, and two RBI.

Our View: Nomar has hit lefties dramatically better than righties this season. Against southpaws he is batting .339 with a 1.067 OPS.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 9/18, 1:56 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra did not severely injure his left knee while stumbling on the basepaths, and could be ready to play this weekend against the Giants, according to the AP.

Our View: He broke loose some scar tissue, but did not cause addition damage to his previously sprained ligament. He should be available to fantasy owners for the final week of the regular season.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 9/17, 8:06 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra left the Dodgers game in the fourth inning with an apparent left knee injury, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: James Loney replaced Nomar in the Dodgers lineup. We will keep you updated on the injury as news comes available.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 9/12, 11:26 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra started against lefthander Jeff Francis on Friday night and finished 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk.

Our View: Nomar hits lefties at a .300 clip while he has tagged righties at only .204 Torre may continue to platoon him with Loney as long as Garciaparra continues to hit.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 8/12, 8:46 PM CT
Shortstop Nomar Garciaparra has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: Garciaparra may be a useful fantasy player, but he just gets hurt too often to be trusted. If you have another option, use it.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 8/11, 9:15 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra, out since July 28th, is expected to return from his injured left knee on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. "He seems comfortable," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "As I said, he probably didn't need this long, but where we were at the time, he basically agreed to go on because our situation at the time."

Our View: Nomar is hitting .279 overall with five home runs in just 86 AB on the year, and should re-enter the starting lineup at shortstop. If he really is healthy he can still hit, but he has already missed over 80 games this season due to injury.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/8, 8:18 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra said his sprained left knee is "pretty close" to being 100 percent and that he should be ready to be activated from the DL Tuesday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Garciaparra has been a solid hitter when healthy this season, and could provide a boost to fantasy owners down the stretch, if his knee actually proves to be 100 percent.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/1, 8:09 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was finally placed on the DL on Friday because of a mild sprain to his MCL in his left knee, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Nomar's move to the DL will open up a roster spot for Manny Ramirez. Angel Berroa will be the regular at short.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 7/31, 8:38 AM CT
A decision on whether to place Nomar Garciaparra on the DL will be made in "the next couple of days," manager Joe Torre told the LA Times. Nomar is dealing with a sprained MCL.

Our View: We expect Nomar to be headed to the DL. Angel Berroa will handle the shortstop duties, though the Dodgers are desperately trying to swing a trade.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 7/29, 9:39 AM CT
A sprained MCL will limit Nomar Garciaparra over the next few days, and if progress isn't made over that time, the veteran could be headed to the DL for the third time this season, according to the LA Daily News. "I think he felt it more (Monday)," manager Joe Torre said. "I'm not sure if there was puffiness in there or not. He had it wrapped up when I saw him on the trainer's table."

Our View: Is anyone really surprised? The bummer is that Nomar was actually swinging the bat well.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/28, 11:38 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra has a sprained MCL according to the Daily News. What we are being told is that he will have "very little" activity over the next few days, then will "progress to baseball activity as tolerated."

Our View: It doesn't appear he is headed to the DL just yet. Regardless, the shortsop, who had been hitting well, will not be playing for a while.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/27, 6:01 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra left Sunday's game with left knee irritation. It is unknown what the extent of the injury is at this point.

Our View: Nomar had been hitting .360 since the break and this is a hit to a Dodgers lineup that often struggles to score. He had been riding a nine-day healthy streak prior to Sunday. We'll be keeping an eye on this.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 7/26, 12:05 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra hit a bases loaded single and went 1-for-3 with two RBI, helping the Dodgers beat Washington 3-2.

Our View: Garciaparra has been great in July, hitting over .300 on the month, raising his average from .226 to .277.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/21, 6:16 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is not in Monday night's lineup against the Rockies, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. Angel Berroa will start at shortstop.

Our View: The Dodgers appear to just be giving Nomar a night off. It's too bad, since he's been hitting well.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 7/19, 7:48 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra recorded a pair of home runs on Friday during a 3-for-5 night. He had three RBI hitting out of the five-hole.

Our View: Nomah has been respectable since his return but this was by far his best game. It's still too early to jump on the bandwagon with Garciaparra, although he does have three position eligibility and is hitting in a good spot of the order for a team capable of scoring more often.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 7/16, 7:18 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is hitting only .276 over his last 10 games, but he has knocked in seven runs while playing a solid shortstop with no errors in eight games.

Our View: Nomar has suited up for eight games at third base as well, and is clearly going to be a valuable NL only option the rest of the way if he can manage to stay healthy long enough to find the groove with his stroke.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/13, 6:58 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-3 with two RBI helping the Dodgers return to the win column with a 9-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: Garciappara, who hit leadoff for the first time in six years on Saturday, batted out of the cleanup spot on Sunday.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/13, 10:23 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra hit leadoff for the Dodgers yesterday, something he had not done in six years, according to the Los Angeles Times. "We'll sacrifice the speed to get someone who'll give us quality at-bats," Joe Torre said.

Our View: Garciaparra is hitting just .228 on the year with an on-base percentage of only .313, not something that would necessarily be considered "quality." He is hitting just .158 in his last seven games, and should not be on fantasy rosters at the moment.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 7/10, 10:27 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will get the day off and will not be in the lineup today, according to the Los Angeles Times. Manager Joe Torre said he expects him to be in the lineup the rest of the week.

Our View: Garciaparra has played well since his return from the DL, hitting .286 with a 1.055 OPS. Nomar is a decent option in NL-only leagues. He has never hit lower than .283 in seasons when he has played at least 60 games.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/7, 11:51 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 1-for-3, but his one hit was a big one. The Dodgers first baseman hit his second home run of the season to help the Dodgers defeat the Atlanta Braves 3-0 on Monday night.

Our View: If Garciaparra can stay healthy, he will assist his fantasy owners in the second half of the season. But managers have a better chance of being struck by lightening than watching Nomar play in 60-70 games the rest of the way.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 7/4, 2:51 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra has been activated from the disabled list, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Garciaparra will likely see some playing time because the Dodgers are not exactly an offensive juggernaut. Be wary of putting him on your fantasy roster only to see him get injured again, however.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 7/3, 1:00 PM CT
In wake of Rafael Furcal's announcement of back surgery, Nomar Garciaparra is rushing back from rehab and will join the team on Friday, according to the L.A. Daily News.

Our View: Pretty gutsy. I mean, his left calf was strained just two moths ago. Could he possibly have recovered this fast? Still, Nomar might see some regular playing time. Rookie Blake DeWitt saw his average drop nearly 40 points in June. The combo of Angel Berroa and Luis Maza isn't exactly sparking fear in many opponents either.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 6/25, 9:51 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra told the Los Angeles Times he hopes to go on a minor-league rehab assignment next week. Garciaparra worked in the cages and did some running on Tuesday in an attempt to break up the scar tissue in his right calf.

Our View: Nomar is eligible to come off the disabled list today, but won't join the team for another 1-2 weeks minimum.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 6/23, 9:07 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra plans to resume baseball activities on Tuesday, according to the LA Times. That would be five days after his physical therapist advised he rest his strained calf for 10 days. Manager Joe Torre said, "Nomar decided. This is something that has been tough to get a grip on. You have to rely on how he feels. The whole thing is his call."

Our View: He is eligible to come off the DL on June 25, but the team did not specify when he is expected back.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 6/21, 8:47 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra's physical therapist advised him to cease baseball activities for 10 days to rest the strained right calf that flared up on him earlier in the week, according to the LA Times.

Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 6/19, 8:35 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra fared well in his first rehab game (at Triple-A Las Vegas) on Tuesday as he hit a homer, but was forced to sit out Wednesday's game due to soreness in his strained right calf, according to the LA Times.

Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 6/16, 11:22 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra (strained calf) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: With Rafael Fucal still on the DL, and Chin-lung Hu on the Triple-A disable list, Garciaparra will likely play shortstop when he is activated from the DL, possibly by the weekend if all goes well.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 6/14, 9:40 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra believes he will be able to start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times notes. The veteran infielder is eligible to come off the DL on June 25. Garciaparra is out due to a strained left calf.

Our View: Nomar will surely need more than a token two or three days. He's been out since late April and is expected to return to shortstop. We'll continue to monitor his progress.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/10, 11:46 PM CT
The Dodgers report plans to move Nomar Garciaparra to shortstop are likely to come to fruition, thanks to the continued struggles for health for Rafael Furcal, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: Manager Joe Torre told reporters he hopes to see Nomar starting a rehab assignment in the minors within the next week, allowing him to progress towards a return to the majors and the shortstop position. Garciaparra, a five-time All-Star at shortstop, has not played the position in three years. He was originally scheduled to play third base, but he suffered a hand injury in spring training, and rookie Blake DeWitt has since established himself at that position.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/10, 5:35 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra took part in Dodgers batting practice on Tuesday.

Our View: It's not much, but it is a sign that the Dodgers have not completely given up on him despite multiple major-league prospects at the corners.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/3, 11:57 PM CT
Dodger infielder Nomar Garciaparra recently completed a full battery of of medical tests and doctors now believe his constant struggles with frequent calf pulls may be the result of unidentified blood-flow problems, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: Garciaparra, who sat out three weeks because of a strained left calf last summer, went on the disabled list April 26 with another strain in the same area. And while he doesn't consider the situation career-threatening, until doctors find the reason for the problem the six-time All-Star said they have no idea how to treat it.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 5/24, 9:41 PM CT
The Dodgers moved Nomar Garciaparra to the 60-day DL Saturday, which means he won't be eligible to return until June 25, according to the LA Daily News. Garciaparra has been recovering slowly from a strained left calf.

Our View: With Blake DeWitt hitting well, there was no need to rush Nomar back. What originally looked like a minimum DL stint has turned into at least a two-month stay for the former star.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 5/21, 9:09 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra underwent some tests on his strained left calf that revealed, well, a strained left calf, according to the LA Daily News. The third baseman was being looked at to determine why his progress has stalled. "We just wait for him to feel better," manager Joe Torre said.

Our View: Nomar has been out nearly a month, and a return doesn't appear to be on the horizon.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/19, 11:58 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra's recovery from a strained left calf appears to have stalled, and the Dodgers third baseman is scheduled to undergo a battery of tests this week. "This thing just won't go away," Torre told the LA Times. "He's tried to run and jog and it's still there."

Our View: Not one experienced fantasy owners should be surprised by this.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 4:13 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is still experiencing trouble with his strained calf, and now more tests are being ordered since the leg has failed to respond as hoped, according to MLB.com. "It won't go away," manager Joe Torre said. "He tried to run and jog and it's still there. It's frustrating to him. We talked yesterday. He'll get it checked when we get home."

Our View: So much for Nomar playing some shortstop with Rafael Furcal out. With Nomar unable to get healthy, look for Blake DeWitt to continue to get most of the work at third base for the Dodgers.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 5/15, 8:36 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra may be used at shortstop if he returns to the diamond before the injured Rafael Furcal, according to the LA Times. Manager Joe Torre said, "He was taking groundballs at shortstop Tuesday. He volunteered that he could do this. And I certainly would be open to it."

Our View: Torre would use Nomar at shortstop, so the team could keep Blake DeWitt at third base. This move could be advantageous (roster flexibility) for Garciaparra owners, if their league allows him to be designated as a shortstop or corner infielder.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 5/13, 5:36 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra (left calf) still is not healthy enough to return to game action, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. "I felt like I could push it more, so that was good," he said. "I was able to run harder. But at the same time, I couldn't do as much as I wanted to do. There was some tightness and some soreness there, so I had to back off."

Our View: Nomar hopes to be able to take some groundballs and possibly hit in the cage on Wednesday, but like it has been in recent years with the former great, he just can't seem to keep that body of his healthy.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/12, 8:12 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will travel with the Dodgers to Milwaukee and take part in an early workout on Tuesday, according to the LA Times. Garciaparra said he started jogging Friday and that his strained right calf hasn't bothered him.

Our View: Garciaparra might be sent on a minor league rehab assignment after that. As previously reported, he could be activated for the series opener against the Angels on May 16 in Anaheim.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 5/10, 11:42 AM CT

Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/5, 9:25 AM CT

Our View: He would be able to come off the DL this weekend, barring any setbacks.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 4/26, 7:38 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is headed back to the DL according to MLB.com. He suffered a strained calf during battle with the Rockies last night, which is the same injury that landed him on the DL last season.

Our View: Blake DeWitt will be called back up from the minors. Just when he thought he was out, they pull him back in. DeWitt is back on the fantasy radar, if only for a brief time.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 4/26, 7:33 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra left Friday's game against the Rockies in the ninth inning, due to a strained left calf, according to the AP. The severity of the injury is yet to be decided.

Our View: Garciaparra just returned from the DL, and now he suffers anoter ailment. The team could bring back Blake DeWitt if Nomar is forced to miss any time.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 4/21, 9:55 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra returned to the lineup on Monday to produce three hits including his first home run of the season for the Dodgers.

Our View: Nomar hit in the third slot tonight and it was vintage Nomar as he doubled his average from .100 to .200. He may continue to be in out of the lineup with injuries, but Nomar can still hit when healthy.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 4/21, 9:31 AM CT
The Dodgers are trying to ease Nomar Garciaparra back into action. The veteran sat out on Sunday and is struggling on defense. "I don't think he is where he needs to be yet," manager Joe Torre tells the Los Angeles Times. "I think we still have a little time to evaluate where he is when he gets back to full strength." Garciaparra missed the first three weeks due to a broken right hand.

Our View: We expect Nomar to get the majority of the starts at third until Andy LaRoche can return, but rookie Blake DeWitt may need to rotate in every few days in the short term.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/16, 8:31 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra was activated on Wednesday from the DL, two days ahead of schedule, this according to the AP. “We were going to activate him on Friday, anyway. But with a left-handed pitcher going tonight, there was really nothing to prevent him from playing," manager Joe Torre said.

Our View: To make room for Nomar they team sent down Ramon Troncos. Look for Nomar to get right in there tonight to face Paul Maholm of the Pirates.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/16, 1:14 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will be activated from the DL on Friday, according to MLB.com. Manager Joe Torre stated, "I spoke with him earlier and he's fine. He had a good day." The plan is for Garciaparra to play in one more rehab assignment early Wednesday, then rejoin the Dodgers on Thursday.

Our View: He will push Blake DeWitt for the third base gig when he returns, but DeWitt is still worth hanging on to in case he outplays Nomar or if he suffers another setback.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 4/14, 11:01 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 0-for-4 in his rebab assignment for Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, according to the LA Times. He is notably 0- for-7 in his two minor league games.

Our View: Manager Torre commented that he could be with the Dodgers on their upcoming five-game trip, which starts in Atlanta on Friday.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/9, 9:58 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra could come off the DL and join the Dodgers as early as Monday, according to the LA Daily News. He reported no negative effects from having taken regular batting practice on Monday, and he even joined the early session on Tuesday. He hasn't played in a game since March 7, due to his microfracture in his right hand. All indications are that when the Dodgers start a six-game homestand on Friday, Garciaparra will be in Sacramento beginning a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas. That would place him on target to potentially return against the Pirates (series starts April 14), because he doesn't figure to need a lengthy rehab. The fantasy stock of Blake DeWitt drops with this news.

He wasn't sure when he'd be able to swing a bat again, and it's looking unlikely that he'll be avaialble for opening day.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/21, 11:28 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra, dealing with a microfracture in a small bone on his right wrist, will not swing a bat until next week, according to MLB.com. Manager Joe Torre said that Nomar is "doubtful" for opening day. "Everybody wants to predict. I'm not," said Garciaparra. "I have no control over it. I'm looking one day at a time. That's all I can do." Torre said that Tony Abreu was the logical front-runner to start at third in the opener. However, the Dodgers are reportedly interested in trading for a fill-in, with Ronnie Belliard, Mark Loretta and Morgan Ensberg as possibilities.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 3/19, 5:46 PM CT

"That's the beauty of spring training," Garciaparra said on MLB.com. "Instead of pushing it, you can kind of take your time." The Dodgers third baseman said he still feels pain, but swelling in his wrist had begun to subside. Consider Nomar day-to-day for now. He should be good to go by next week.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/10, 7:47 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra will miss the Dodgers trip to China with his injured right wrist, this according to MLB.com. Mike Sweeney (knee), will also miss the trip. Nomar Garciaparra went 1-for-2 on Thursday and Andy LaRoche was 1-for-1 as the two began what should be a spirited battle for the Dodgers starting 3B spot. Garciaparra has the accolades, LaRoche the youth and potential, and as a result this is one of the most interesting battles in Dodgers camp this season.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 2/27, 6:41 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra has the inside track on being the Dodgers starting third basemen this year according to manager Joe Torre, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. "I explained to him that being the veteran guy, he has the inside track as far as being the starting third baseman. But we will (start the season) with the best 25 (players) we can get." Andy LaRoche will still be heard from before this decision is made, but don't forget that Nomar could still be a .300 hitter with some decent pop if given the chance to play.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 2/25, 8:28 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra is in a battle for the starting spot at 3B for the Dodgers with Andy LaRoche, and since he has been working out at 3B and SS in camp, some are taking that to mean that he is destined for a utility role this season. "I've done this before and it's meant nothing when the season starts," he said. "I'll get my work in so I'm ready to go when the season starts," according to a report at MLB.com. Joe Torre also said that nothing should be read into anything that has happened in camp so far, so it really appears that Nomar's performance will dictate his role this season.
Nomar Garciaparra, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 2/22, 8:46 AM CT
Dodgers manager Joe Torre is considering the idea of using Nomar Garciaparra as a regular pinch-hitter, and as a utility infielder, because he could "give me flexibility with his versatility," according to the LA Times. Torre added that he'd understand that moving Garciaparra to a reserve role could be a sensitive issue. "The whole thing about [becoming a bench player] is resolving it with yourself," Torre said. "It's trying to make sense of the whole thing." Garciaparra will be pushed by Andy LaRoche for the starting job at third base. It'll be an interesting competition this spring, just as interesting as seeing how the veteran Garciaparra would handle moving to a reserve role if he loses the battle.
