Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 7/26, 2:35 PM CT
Dmitri Young is out for the season with a tear in his quad, according to MLB.com. Young was at Double-A Harrisburg rehabbing a previous injury, and he injured the quad running out a single.

Our View: Young has only played in 50 games over the last two seasons, and it seems unlikely that Young will be back with the Nats next season. With his injury history and his age, it seems possible that Young may never play again. When he was healthy, he put up solid numbers, including the 2007 season in which he hit .320 and won the Comeback Player of the Year award. Those days have long passed him by, however.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsWednesday 6/17, 10:52 AM CT
Dmitri Young is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse next week according to MASN.com.

Our View: He has nowhere to play in Washington, with Nick Johnson entrenched at first and Young too frail for the outfield these days. It is likely that a move will be made regarding him sometime in the 20 days he is allowed to rehab.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 4/26, 9:12 AM CT
First baseman Dmitri Young (back, hip) is getting close to starting a 20-day minor league rehab assignment. He is currently working in extended spring training. "Yeah, I think he's getting better," general manager Mike Rizzo tells the Washington Post. "He played nine innings yesterday, so I think he's getting closer."

Our View: The Nationals would probably like to extend Young to a 200-day rehab assignment. Dmitri certainly doesn't have a spot in the outfield, and we don't imagine him playing much at first base as long as Nick Johnson and Adam Dunn are healthy.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 4/2, 12:04 PM CT
Dmitri Young has been placed on the 15-day DL by the Nationals, according to the Associated Press. He is suffering from back and hip strains, and the move is retroactive to April 1.

Our View: The 35-year-old vet is just a reserve infielder, and only holds value for deeper NL-only leagues at this point of his career.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsTuesday 3/31, 5:43 PM CT
Dmitri Young was 2-for-4 Tuesday and hit a three-run home run in the Nationals' 7-2 win. It was his first homer of the spring.

Our View: Young will make the club this season, but adding him to the 40-man roster was more of a pity move than anything. He had a nice day at the plate Tuesday, but don't expect him to contribute much this season.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 3/26, 4:56 PM CT
According to the Washington Post, the Nationals plan on adding Dmitri Young to their 40-man roster. The team is apparently honoring a handshake agreement that Young had with the now resigned Jim Bowden.

Our View: Young is dealing with diabetes and lingering back problems and looks like a far cry from becoming the player he was in 2007 when he won the Comeback Player of the Year award. At this point he holds no current fantasy value.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSaturday 3/14, 11:56 AM CT
Dmitri Young is still dealing with back tightness, according to MASN Sports. Manager Manny Acta said, "Dmitri is still working with our medical staff and he is getting better, but unless he is ready to go, we are not going to put him on the field."

Our View: There is no timetable for his return, and Young may not make the team if he cannot bounce back healthy soon as he was a non-roster invitee.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 2/23, 6:22 PM CT
Dmitri Young suffered a left ring finger contusion while trying to lay down a bunt Sunday, according to MLB.com. He is considered day-to-day.

Our View: Young may be one of the Top 5 players that you would never expect to bunt in a real game. In fact, he may not play any real games for the Nationals this season. He is not currently on the team's 40-man roster, so he will have to have a very good spring in order to make the cut.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsWednesday 12/10, 1:11 PM CT
Dmitri Young is not protected by the Nationals in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View: Young struggled in his battle with diabetes and is not surprised he was left unprotected. Young did not opt to become a free agent, and has one year left on his contract (worth $5 million).
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsTuesday 11/4, 1:00 PM CT
Dmitri Young was outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Young had little fantasy value in 2008, and isn't likely to have much next year either.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 9/15, 7:26 PM CT
Dmitri Young underwent an MRI on his left hip on Monday. He could miss the rest of the season. "Being out for the year remains to be seen," Young tells MLB.com. "I have been diagnosed with a strained left hip."

Our View: Young has managed a mere 150 at-bats this season after an All-Star 2007 campaign. The Nationals are likely to find a new first baseman this winter, and we don't see much value for Da Meat Hook moving forward.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 9/14, 11:57 AM CT
Young is nursing a left quad injury and will see a doctor in the next few days, the Nationals' team website reports. There is no timetable for his return.

Our View: Returning before the end of the season seems unlikely for the first baseman.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsTuesday 9/9, 7:55 PM CT
Dmitri Young has had a rough year with injuries and when he thought he was going to make it back after getting his diabetes under control, he injured his back. After getting to the ball park on Tuesday he was finally able to rejoin the Nats, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Even though Young is finally back he will not have any fantasy value.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 9/7, 8:11 PM CT
Dmitri Young has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, according to Nationals.com. He was put on the DL because he had trouble getting his diabetes under control.

Our View: Young has limited fantasy value, as he will probably play somewhat sparingly. Not to mention the fact that he offers little home run or RBI production.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 9/4, 7:58 PM CT
Dmitri Young (diabetes), currently playing at Single-A ball, is expected to rejoin the Nationals next Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Young will likely be nothing more than a backup at first base to Ronnie Belliard who has hit very well in the second half (.338 with a .865 OPS in 130 AB), though its great news to hear that Young has been able to overcome his diabetes.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 8/25, 12:04 PM CT
The Nationals are hopeful to get Dmitri Young back in around two weeks, according to the Washington Post. Young has been fighting to get his diabetes under control.

Our View: The team is continuing to get him fit to play. He is worth stashing for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 8/22, 4:05 PM CT
Dmitri Young will be allowed to take part in baseball related activities now that his diabetes is under control, according to Nationals.com.

Our View: It was thought that Young's season was over as little as a week ago, but the team thinks it is possible for him to come back in September.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 8/15, 10:49 AM CT
Dmitri Young, who is dealing with diabetes, is not likely to return to the Nationals this season, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: Even if Young makes a quick turnaround, it won't come before the end of the minor league season, making a rehab assignment impossible.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 7/28, 10:40 AM CT
Dmitri Young is struggling to manage his diabetes and is not feeling well enough to travel, according to the Washington Post. He is still physically unable to begin a team recommended fitness program. GM Jim Bowden said, "We're praying for him. We'll do everything we can to get him healthy."

Our View: It doesn't look like Young will be playing with the Nationals anytime soon.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 7/21, 11:10 AM CT
GM Jim Bowden noted that Dmitri Young needs to gets into first-class physical shape before returning from the DL, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: He also needs to regain control of his diabetes, meaning stabilizing his blood-sugar level. Bowden wants Young to return to the shape he was in last season when he earned the comeback player of the year award. Paul Lo Duca could continue to do his part as a converted first baseman while Young is out.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSaturday 7/19, 10:48 PM CT
The Nats placed Dmitri Young on the DL Saturday in an effort to get Young's diabetes under control. He has been unable to play the last two games because lightheadedness and an inability to focus.

Our View: The Nats plan to activate Ryan Zimmerman from the DL to replace Young on the roster.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSaturday 7/19, 7:19 PM CT
Dmitri Young missed his second straight game Saturday because of symptoms related to high blood sugar, according to MLB.com. A diabetic, Young complained of feeling lightheaded and had difficulty focusing when he arrived at Turner Field Saturday. "[He's] pretty much the same," manager Manny Acta said. "He's still not feeling well enough to play."

Our View: Paul Lo Duca started again at first in Young's place. Hopefully Dmirti is feeling well enough to play tomorrow.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 7/11, 8:23 PM CT
The AP reports that Dmitri Young left Friday night's game with soreness in his lower back. He walked off the field under his own power, with an 0-1 count.

Our View: Da Meat Hook missed more than a month earlier in this season with lower back pain. He may rest through the break.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 7/4, 4:59 PM CT
Dmitri Young went 2-for-2 in Friday's 3-0 shutout loss to the Reds in Cincinnati. He hit a single and a double, which accounted for the Nationals' only extra base hit of the day.

Our View: Young should remain a serviceable infielder for NL-only leagues.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 6/9, 6:10 PM CT
Dmitri Young is back in the lineup Monday after missing three games with the flu. He is playing first base and batting cleanup.

Our View: It's good to see Meathook recover from the sniffles. Insert him into your lineup if you normally would.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 6/8, 1:11 PM CT
Dmitri Young missed his third straight game Sunday because of flu-like symptoms, according to MLB.com. Young was originally in Saturday's lineup but was a late scratch because of the illness.

Our View: Aaron Boone is playing first in place of Meathook. Manager Manny Acta said he wasn't sure when Young would be back.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 6/6, 11:28 PM CT
Dmitri Young did not play Friday due to the flu, according to the AP. Aaron Boone played first in place of Young, and Kory Casto replaced Boone at third.

Our View: Meathook should be good to go shortly.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSaturday 5/17, 12:23 PM CT
Dmitri Young returned to the diamond on Friday after spending a month on the shelf due to his lower back sprain, according to CBSsports.com. He will be worked in slowly as the DH, and then will be ready to play first base in place of the injured Nick Johnson.

Our View: Aaron Boone started at first base on Friday. Young went 1-for-4 in his first game back (against the Orioles). Young is worthy of a roster spot in NL-only leagues.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 5/16, 10:02 AM CT
The Nationals activated Dmitri Young from the DL Friday. Young has been out nearly all year with a back ailment.

Our View: With Nick Johnson on the DL, Young will take over as the starter at first. He's certainly worth a roster spot in NL-only play, but you should hold off in mixed leagues.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 5/15, 11:43 AM CT
Dmitri Young will be activated from the DL and resume the starting role at first base in place of the injured Nick Johnson, who will be out of action for four to six weeks due to a torn tendon in his right wrist, according to the AP.

Our View: Young will be activated on Friday, and he has recovered from a lower back sprain. Young can still hit with power, and was notably an All-Star in 2007. He is worth targeting if you need help, especially if you lost Nick Johnson.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 5/11, 10:23 AM CT
Dmitri Young will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday, the Washington Post reports. He does not have a timetable for his return from a sore lower back.

Our View: Da Meat Hook doesn't have much fantasy value at this point, as he's behind Nick Johnson at first base and probably won't be used much (if at all) in the outfield. It's too bad the Nats didn't trade him when his value peaked last July.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 5/2, 10:28 AM CT
Dmitri Young experienced a sudden and dramatic breakthrough with his back injury Wednesday when the Nationals massage therapist focused on the first baseman's hip flexor and not his back. "All of a sudden, he felt instant release," GM Jim Bowden said in the Washington Post. "She found the spot." Young will go to extended spring training Sunday, but the team has no timetable for his return.

Our View: This is certainly good news for those that have been waiting on Young, but don't expect to see him before the end of the month.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsWednesday 4/30, 8:46 PM CT
Dmitri Young, on the DL with an injured lower back, hasn't seen much improvement so he is searching for a second opinion at the Mayo Clinic, according to MLB.com. "He is not making progress," general manager Jim Bowden said. "He can't turn after he hits. We can't get him over the hump."

Our View: Nick Johnson has reestablished himself in the Nationals plans with his comeback from a broken leg, but he has fallen on hard times of late hitting .222, so the Nats could certainly use Young's bat. However, Young is dealing with the back and with diabetes, so you shouldn't be counting on much of anything from him, at least in the short term.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsTuesday 4/8, 10:11 PM CT
The Nationals placed Dmitri Young on the DL Tuesday with a lower back sprain. The move is retroactive to April 3. Young has managed just two at-bats thus far. Johnny Estrada will be recalled from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus to replace Young on the roster. Nick Johnson will continue to see the bulk of the time at first base while Young is out.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 4/4, 5:44 PM CT
Dmitri Young has been sent back to Washington for treatment and further examination on his ailing back, according to the AP. An MRI on Young's back revealed inflammation, but manager Manny Acta said it was too soon to consider placing Young on the DL. The manager expects the situation to be resolved by the time the team returns home from St. Louis Monday. Keep Young on your bench until further notice.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 4/3, 8:54 PM CT
Dmitri Young's back flared up on him again Thursday, making him unavailable for a critical pinch-hitting opportunity in the ninth inning of what became an 8-7 loss, according to the Washington Post. Young had an MRI on his back, and the results will be known when the Nats reach St. Louis tomorrow. The team is listing Young as day-to-day for the time being. Nick Johnson will continue to see the bulk of the playing time at first.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsWednesday 3/26, 9:20 AM CT
Dmitri Young is not a disabled list candidate despite his limited spring, the Washington Post notes. Young has appeared in seven games and logged only 23 at-bats due to a sore back. He is likely to open the season behind Nick Johnson at first base.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsTuesday 3/18, 6:52 PM CT
Dmitri Young went 2-for-5 at the plate Tuesday, raising his spring batting average to .353. He's trying to hold of Nick Johnson for action at first base, so his hot spring is helping. On the other hand, Johnson isn't exactly going away, as he raised his spring average to .290 after going 3-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsWednesday 3/5, 4:21 PM CT
Dmitri Young has overcome many issues in the past with the most recent speed bump being diabetes, this according to ESPN. Because of the illness, Young came to camp tipping the scales at a whale-like 298 pounds, but at least there seems to be a medical explanation for it. Young will have to monitor the condition for the rest of his life, but since he was diagnosed in 2006 he has gone out and proven that he can overcome it and hit the heck out of the ball (.320-13-74 last year).
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsTuesday 3/4, 5:31 PM CT
Nats manager Manny Acta said Tuesday that he expects Dmitri Young to start a hitting program and soft tossing soon, according to the AP. Young hasn't played this spring due to tightness in his lower back and hip and currently is resting the sore muscles. So long as he gets back in action soon, he should be fine for opening day.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 3/2, 11:44 PM CT
Dmitri Young told the Washington Post that he'll likely need 3-4 days of rest for the strained muscles on his left side. "We're going to be cautious with him," manager Manny Acta said. Young hurt the muscles while taking a swing last week. This won't hurt his availability for the start of the season, but it could hurt him in his competition with Nick Johnson for playing time.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSaturday 3/1, 2:30 PM CT
Dmitri Young was scratched from Saturday's exhibition game due to a strain that runs from his side into his left quadriceps, according to the Washington Post. The soreness should only cost him a few days, barring something unexpected.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 2/18, 6:43 PM CT
Dmitri Young spent the off-season dealing with his diabetes and reported to camp on Monday in much better physical shape according to a report by the AP. Young will have to battle Nick Johnson in the spring for playing time at 1B, though all reports signal that Young is clearly in the lead for the starting spot a year after hitting .320. "One of us might get traded. It's a good thing when you're wanted, as well -- wanted by our team and maybe by someone else," Young said. Johnson has never been able to stay healthy, so there is no reason to expect him to be able to do so this year after a broken leg destroyed his 2007 season.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSaturday 2/16, 5:18 PM CT
Manager Manny Acta met with the media on Saturday afternoon and told the Washington Post he considers Dmitri Young his starting first baseman. The skipper listed veteran Ronnie Belliard his starting second baseman, Cristian Guzman his shortstop and said that Guzman would lead off. But -- and Acta stressed this several times -- "this could change." There is the possibility, with a healthy Nick Johnson (but for how long), Young is a candidate to be moved.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSaturday 2/16, 11:04 AM CT
The Nationals may look to trade either Nick Johnson or Dmitri Young this preseason. "If they're both healthy, logically, it may be possible one of them has to be moved to make that work. It doesn't mean we're going to, but it's something we may have to look at," general manager Jim Bowden tells the Washington Post.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 9/23, 4:50 AM CT
Dmitri Young is still battling a stiff neck and there's concern that he might not play again this year, the Nationals official site reports. Robert Fick, who's been surprisingly productive over the last few weeks, will get at-bats while Young is out of the lineup.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsWednesday 9/19, 6:30 AM CT
Dmitri Young was not in the starting lineup for the third straight game Wednesday, the AP reports. He's dealing with a stiff neck, the result of a Mark Teixeira line drive in Saturday's game. Young had an MRI Tuesday that revealed no significant damage.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 9/16, 5:07 PM CT

Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsMonday 8/13, 8:53 AM CT

Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsSunday 7/29, 6:08 AM CT
Dmitri Young and the Nationals have finalized their two-year, $10 million extension, the AP reports. Young is now signed through the 2009 season. Young's had a tremendous comeback year for the Nationals, but it's hard to imagine how this deal is going to make sense, given Young's age (he turns 34 in October) and physical history.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 7/26, 6:51 PM CT
Dmitri Young and the Nationals are on the verge of signing a two-year contract extension. The deal would pay him $5 million each season and include an option for 2010 that would become guaranteed if he has 500 at-bats in 2009 or 900 combined in 2008 and 2009, according to the AP. Young was cast away by the Tigers at the end of 2006 but has been a nice surprise for the Nats this year, hitting .331 with nine homers and 52 RBI.

As the Twins continue to discuss options for upgrading their offense for the stretch run, outfielder Torii Hunter put a vote in to acquire Nationals' first baseman Dmitri Young . "Dmitri is definitely the guy," Hunter told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "If not Dmitri, Ty Wigginton, Kevin Mench. But Dmitri is a guy who's been an All-Star; he's hit .300 almost every year."

Dmitri Young was ready to start Tuesday after missing most of a week with a sore left Achilles, but Manny Acta kept him on the bench for another game because the team was riding a four-game winning streak, the AP reports. "He knows we've got a good thing going," said Acta, who did use Young as a pinch-hitter (ground out) in the fifth. The Nationals wound up losing to Atlanta Tuesday, so Acta has no reason to keep Young out of the starting lineup on Wednesday, we suppose.

Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsFriday 9/8, 7:14 AM CT
According to the Detroit News, Dmitri Young was released Wednesday because of personal issues and not because of performance on the field. "To put it bluntly, he was a growing cancer, someone who cared too much about himself, and not enough about the team," a team source told the paper. "I thought this was going to happen. You could see it building. People will say all the right things, but the truth is he won't be missed by many of us." GM Dave Dombrowski said on Wednesday that Young's cut was related to performance.
Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsWednesday 9/6, 7:56 PM CT

Dmitri Young, 1B, Washington NationalsThursday 7/20, 4:06 PM CT
The Tigers could activate Dmitri Young from the DL as early as Friday, according to the AP. Young has been on the DL since May 22 with a leg strain and personal issues. It's possible Young's rehab assignment could extend into next week, but manager Jim Leyland said "it won't run it's full course."
