Jay Payton, LF, Colorado RockiesThursday 1/21, 8:22 AM CT
Well-traveled veteran Jay Payton has signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies.

Our View: Payton failed to appear in the majors last season after playing in 127 games for the Orioles in 2008. In over 4,000 career at-bats, he is a .278 hitter, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that he could have one more good year left in him playing in the thin air of Colorado.

The Red Sox are not interested in Jay Payton as a fourth outfielder, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: The market for Payton will probably develop slowly, as he only hit .243 with seven home runs and 41 RBI last year.

Jay Payton commented that he would consider returning to Boston after asking the team to trade him back in 2005, according to the Boston Globe. Payton said, "When I talked to my agent recently, Boston was the first team I mentioned. I don't know if it's in the cards or if I squished my chances of ever returning there. I know the circumstances of my departure from there a few years back were blown out of proportion."

Our View: Payton would serve as the fourth outfielder if brought back to Boston, replacing Coco Crisp, who departed to Kansas City.

After an 0-for-4 evening in the Orioles 9-4 loss to the Yankees, Jay Payton saw his batting average crumble further downward, all the way to .239. His average has dropped more than 25 points since late June.

Our View: Payton is really struggling, and after having his average at .265 on June 26, it's fallen off dramatically. Payton does not hit for enough power or drive in enough runs for fantasy owners to deal with his poor average.

The Cubs are probably happy to get Jay Payton out of town. He went 2-for-5 with three RBI in today's game, a day after he hit two home runs. Payton leaves Wrigley having gone 4-for-10 for the series with seven RBI.

Our View: Payton has had a nice June, and is now hitting .333 for the month, with 15 RBI. He could be a decent pick-up in deep AL only leagues.
Jay Payton, LF, Colorado RockiesWednesday 6/25, 10:20 PM CT
Jay Payton had a huge effort in the Orioles loss on Wednesday as he socked two home runs on his way to four RBI.

Our View: No one has noticed, but Payton has been one of the most effective part-time players in baseball in June with a .325 average, two home runs and 12 RBI in just 40 AB.

Jay Payton went 3-for-5 and collected five RBI in Saturday's 9-5 win over Toronto. He had one double, and two singles.

Our View: Those were his first runs batted in this month, and he only has 20 for the season. That was also his first multi-hit game since May 25.

Baltimore outfielder Jay Payton put a strong effort on the plate today as the Orioles fell 5-4 to Tampa Bay. Payton went 2-for-3 at the plate, both singles to total two runs scored.

Our View: Payton has struggled through a rough month, this being just his second multi-hit game to bring him to .229 in the batting average column.

Jay Payton hit a grand slam home run to left field scoring Freddie Bynum, Guillermo Quiroz and Brian Roberts in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Red Sox.

Jay Payton is set to come off the disabled list Friday, the Washington Post reports. He's returning from a hamstring injury. While Payton will join the Orioles for the first time, manager Sam Perlozzo may not insert him as a starter right away. Perlozzo said this week that Payton will be "a little bit behind" and he doesn't want to rush him. Payton's addition likely means a demotion for Jon Knott.

Jay Payton played six innings in an extended spring training game Tuesday, and will play the next two days in a rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Norfolk, the Washington Post reports. "He is a left fielder and he is a center fielder," Perlozzo said when asked if Payton was the team's left fielder. "We'll see how he is. We want to make sure that he is good. He's going to be a little bit behind."

Payton is eligible to return from the DL next Wednesday, but it's uncertain if he'll be ready by then. "I would just like to be close," Payton said. "I'm not going to try to come off three or four days early just because the 11th is the day I can come off. I'm going to come off when I feel good and I'm ready to play and I feel like I don't have to worry about it the rest of the year."
