Caps sign C Aucoin Arlington, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals signed center Keith
Aucoin to a two-year contract, the team announced on Thursday. Per club
policy, financial terms were not disclosed.
Aucoin, 29, split last season between the Carolina Hurricanes and Albany of
the American Hockey League. In 38 games at the NHL level, Aucoin tallied five
goals and eight assists.
The 5-foot-9, 187-pound center has played in 53 games over parts of three
seasons with Carolina, posting five goals and 10 assists.... More...
Brooks Laich has elected to take the Capitals to salary arbitration, according to TSN. Defenseman Shaone Morrison is also taking the club to arbitration.
Our View:Laich reached new highs with 21 goals and 16 assists (37 points) over 82 games in 2007-08. The 25-year old center scored a point in each of the Capitals' final five games of the postseason against the Flyers, notching six (one goal) over the span.
The Washington Capitals would like to retain the services of 38-year-old Sergei Fedorov , according to the Washington Post. "We'll continue to talk to him, but we're pretty confident that we'll get something done here," General Manager George McPhee said
Our View:Fedorov only scored 11 goals in 68 games last season, and his days of being an impact player in fantasy hockey are about over.
Jose Theodore wasted little time in decided which team he wanted to sign with as he chose the Washington Capitals where he signed a 3-year, $16 million deal, according to TSN.
Our View:Theodore certainly used a strong season in Colorado to receive a plum job in Washington. With this signing, it seems almost a 100% certainty that Cristobal Huet will not be back with the Caps after a tremendous run with the club after he was acquired from Theodore's old team, the Canadiens. Look for Theodore to be valued at the bottom rung of starting goalies in two starter systems heading into next season.
