Laviolette to remain behind 'Canes bench
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Peter Laviolette, head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, will remain the behind the team's bench for next season.

Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford made the announcement Friday, after he, Laviolette and team owner Peter Karmanos met on Thursday to discuss the state of the team.

Despite winning 52 regular-season games and the Stanley Cup in 2005-2006, the Hurricanes have missed the playoffs in each of the last two years.

Eric Staal left Team Canada to attend a family funeral, according to TSN.ca. Staal flew back to Thunder Bay, Ontario to attend his grandfather's funeral. He will not play in Wednesday's quarterfinal game against Norway.

Our View:He will rejoin the team for their game on Friday, if Canada advances. Sam Gagner will be added to the roster and will suit up against Norway on Wednesday. Gagner has yet to appear in a game at this yer's IIHF World Championship. Staal has scored four goals and added three assists over six games for Canada, and racked up 82 points over 82 games for Carolina this season.

In case you missed it, Michael Leighton made an unfathomable 98 saves in the Albany River Rats 3-2 loss 5 OT loss to the Philadelphia Phantoms in the longest game in AHL history.

Our View:Leighton has only played in 50 games in his NHL career, including just three games this past season, but he will live on in hockey history for this astonishing performance.
Rod Brind'Amour, C Wednesday 4/23, 4:22 PM CT
Rod Brind'Amour, out since surgery on February 15th because of a torn ACL, returned to the ice to skate on Monday, this according to the Charlotte News Observer.

Our View:Brind'Amour participated in team drills and is looking to be at full-strength at the start of next season. He scored 51 points in 59 games this season before being injured and is the heart and soul of the team.
