Brendan Shanahan looks likely to continue his career this coming season, and the team with the inside track to sign him just might be the New Jersey Devils, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Shanahan began his career with the club back in 1987-88, when he was more of a tough guy than a scorer. It would be a fitting end to a HOF career for Shanahan to return home, and he still would bring some game with him as he scored 23 times last season, with 11 on the power-play, for the Rangers.

The Rangers may not have a spot for Brendan Shanahan this season, according to the Detroit News. GM Glen Sather said Shanahan needs to be patient during the free agency period, and added, "Until we know where the pieces are going to fall, he's just going to have to wait and see how it comes out. We're in a position now where we haven't spent our free-agent money and we have some kids coming. I don't want to shut the door early. He knows I'm going to treat him with respect."

Our View:The 39-year old Shanahan could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Three of his 23 goals in 2007-08 were game-winners.

Brendan Shanahan may or may not play next season, but if he does return his first choice would be to play with the Rangers, according to Newsday. "I definitely know that I can still be a productive player in the NHL...If I decided to play, this [New York] would be my first choice ... I just know it's not an answer that I'll have for awhile."

Our View:Shanahan is no longer the player he once was, but there is no shame in that. He still scored 23 times, including 11 times on the power-play, so he can be productive in the right role. If that means a return to NY, he would likely have to accept a reduced role.
