Stu Barnes has decided to hang up his skates after 16 seasons of NHL service, according to TSN. The 37-year-old Barnes said, "I was truly fortunate to play as long as I did, and I knew this was the time for me to wrap up my playing days. A great opportunity to become an assistant coach was presented to me by the Stars, and I look forward to making that transition and learning a new part of the game."

Our View:He scored 597 career goals, and is not totally walking away from the NHL as he signed a two-year contract with the Stars as an assistant coach.

Stu Barnes will contemplate retirement over the offseason, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram notes.

Our View:Barnes is 37 and has been in the NHL since 1991, so this news is no surprise. He isn't a fantasy factor, but he offers good veteran leadership for the Stars.
May 19, 2008
Stu Barnes will miss the Stars Game 6 matchup with the Wings due to concussion like symptoms, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:Barnes has been out since Game 3 of the series with the Sharks, and his veteran presence has been sorely missed in the locker room despite the Stars ability to play well on the ice.
May 16, 2008
Stu Barnes worked out for about 30 minutes after going through a 20-minute workout Wednesday but still isn't ready to return from his concussion and will sit out Saturday's game, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View:It sounds like Barnes could be close. Too bad the Stars are on the brink of elimination.
May 12, 2008
Detroit dominated the faceoff dot in Game 2, winning 71 percent of the draws (39 for 55). The loss of Stu Barnes (concussion) in Game 3 will not help Dallas overcome this huge in-game issue.

Our View:Barnes will miss his sixth straight playoff tilt.
May 12, 2008
Stu Barnes will not play in Game 3 against the Red Wings, according to the Dallas Morning News. Barnes worked out hard Thursday and has been battling headaches since.

Our View:He will miss his sixth game of the playoffs due to concussion-like symptoms sustained back in Game 3 against the Sharks. Dallas trails in the series 2-0, and the team will make sure Barnes he is ready before putting him back on the ice.
May 9, 2008
Stu Barnes said he may be ready to return for Game 2 against Detroit, according to the Dallas Morning News. He has missed four straight games due to concussion-like symptoms sustained back in Game 3 against the Sharks.

Our View:He has been experiencing dizziness when he works out, but feels better every day. This is an important game for Dallas as they trail 1-0, and the team will make sure he is ready before putting him back on the ice.
May 8, 2008
Stu Barnes (concussion) is being listed as doubtful to skate in Game 1 of the series against the Red Wings, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View:Barnes continues to improve and is pushing himself a bit more each day at practice. Still, concussions are a touchy thing, and the Stars want to make sure that Barnes is 100% before they put him back in the lineup. Brad Winchester should continue to fill in for Barnes.
May 7, 2008
Stu Barnes (concussion) hasn't yet ruled out being ready to go for Game 1 against the Wings, according to the Dallas Morning News. "I'm better today than I was yesterday; I was better yesterday than the day before," Barnes said. "I just have to come in every day and see where it's at."

Our View:Barnes is a "glue guy" who offers much more to his team than the points he puts up on the scoreboard making him just the type of player that is needed in the playoffs.
May 6, 2008
Stu Barnes remains sidelined due to concussion-like symptoms (sustained in Game 3 against the Sharks), and hasn't skated with the team since then, according to the Star-Telegram. But when asked if he would play in the upcoming series against Detroit, Barnes said, "Hopefully yes. We're going to have to see what happens this morning, check it out and go from there. Everyone come playoff time wants to be in there as much as possible."

Our View:He didn't score a point over three games played in the series against the Sharks, and he only contributed 12 goals over 79 games in the regular season. The team will be fine if he ultimately cannot return against Detroit.
May 4, 2008
Stu Barnes will be a game-time decision for Sunday's Game 6 against San Jose, according to the Dallas Morning News. He is still recovering from concussion-like symptoms.

Our View:He is yet to score a point over three games played in the series against the Sharks, and he only contributed 12 goals over 79 games in the regular season. The team will be fine if he ultimately cannot go.
April 30, 2008
Dallas Stars center Stu Barnes has missed Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal series against the San Jose Sharks this evening due to a possible concussion, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Barnes withstood a vicious check from Jonathan Cheechoo in last night's 2-1 OT victory over the Sharks and Stars coach Dave Tippett reports Barnes is still "feeling the effects" of the hit. The team reports Barnes is day to day.

Stu Barnes will miss 7-10 days following surgery to repair a partially torn retina, according to the AP. The center can't have any physical activity for at least a week while he recovers, but he isn’t expected to be out for longer than 10 days. Barnes isn't a fantasy asset at this point in his career.
