The Panthers have bought out the remainder of Jozef Stumpel's contract with the club, according to TSN.ca. Stumpel was entering the last season of a two-year contract extension that paid him $2.25 million.

Our View:The 35-year old center is now an unrestricted free agent. He chipped in seven goals and 13 assists over 52 games with the Panthers in 2007-08. He should find work as a deep reserve next season, but won't hold any fantasy value.

Jozef Stumpel was waived by the Panthers on Wednesday, according to the Sun Sentinel. Teams have until noon on Thursday to claim Jozef, but if he passes that point without finding a new home the Panthers will likely buy him out of the remaining year on his contract making him a free agent.

Our View:Stumpel is scheduled to make $2.25 million, and the Panthers would be on the hook for two-thirds of that in a buyout. However, after last seasons total of just 20 points in 52 games, the 35 year old Stumpel likely will have to fight for a spot on an NHL roster in the coming season.

Jozef Stumpel hopes to return to game action on Wednesday, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "There is a possibility there, but I don't really know," Stumpel said. He's working his way back from a separated shoulder, but the Panthers will be cautious to avoid aggravating the injury.
