Coach Mike Babcock is reportedly very close to inking a contract extension with Detroit, according to the Detroit News.

The Red Wings have determined Johan Franzen's head injury, according to the Detroit News. It was a subdural hematoma that forced Johan Franzen out of the Red Wings' lineup for six playoff contests. Subdural hematoma can be caused by minor accidents to the head, major trauma, or the spontaneous bursting of a blood vessel in the brain. GM Ken Holland said, "It's not going to affect him long term. Basically, in effect, it's a bruise. It's like when you get hit on a part of your body."

Our View:Franzen said he was concerned when first told of the injury, but felt better after being reassured by doctors it wouldn't reoccur. The injury is reportedly common with boxers.
June 6, 2008
Johan Franzen was arguably the biggest performer in the Red Wings championship run. A 27-goal scorer during the regular-season, Franzen exploded with 13 goals in 16 postseason contests.

Our View:Franzen had 12 of those in Detroit's first 11 playoff games. Could the postseason launch the center into fantasy stardom next year?

May 25, 2008
Johan Franzen practiced again Sunday, will do so again on Monday morning, and could be back in the Red Wings' lineup for Game 2 on Monday night, according to the Detroit News. Franzen said, "We'll make a decision tomorrow. I was hoping to get hit, but didn't get any. I was hoping Darren McCarty would hit me. It's better, I don't feel anything anymore. It's good. There will be so much adrenaline, it doesn't matter what shape you're in."

Our View:Franzen hasn't played since persistent headaches forced him out of the lineup before Game 2 against Dallas in the Western Conference finals, but he is finally closing in on his return to the ice. Franzen's 12 goals ties him with team-mate Henrik Zetterberg atop the playoff leaders.

He has been out since Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals due to a concussion. "I’m out of shape, but otherwise I felt good," Franzen notes. "We’ll do some testing (Saturday). It wasn’t clear to me exactly what I have to do. It’s day to day, checkups every day."

Our View:Franzen remains a game-by-game decision, and the Red Wings could end up missing his scoring touch against the Penguins.
May 22, 2008
Johan Franzen is doubtful for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday, according to the Detroit News. GM Ken Holland said it was a positive step, but added that Franzen is "highly doubtful" for Game 1. Holland also remarked, "He's feeling better, but he hasn't practiced in nearly two weeks. I guess he did go for a twirl. He hasn't been cleared to go full out."

"He's been cleared for light workouts, but nothing more. “He’s going to have to practice with us for a few days and feel good the next day before he plays again,” GM Ken Holland said.

Our View:Since Franzen went down the Wings power-play is 0-for-15, but obviously the bigger concern is Franzen's health. Given the fact that the Wings should be able to dispose of the Stars without him, there is no reason to rush him back anyway.
May 15, 2008
Johan Franzen is going to miss Game 5 against Dallas, according to the AP. Franzen was scratched from the Red Wings’ lineup for Game 2 against the Stars, and hasn't returned to the lineup since.

May 14, 2008
Johan Franzen has been cleared to resume light workouts, the Detroit News reports. The center is back in Detroit and still experiencing headaches. "He's been given the green light to start doing a few things," general manager Ken Holland explains. "Nothing major, just riding the bike a little bit. We'll continue to monitor the headaches and we'll see how he responds."

Our View:We imagine Franzen will be held out as long as possible, which means Game 7 of a series with the Stars or maybe Game 1 of a Stanley Cup series.
May 13, 2008
Johan Franzen will miss Game 4 due to the results of a head injury, according to the Associated Press. “He’s stilling having headaches,” GM Ken Holland said. “Nothing’s changed. He’s not going to play in Game Four and he’s day-to-day. Hopefully, he feels better in a few days. “He’s not healthy enough to work out.”

Our View:The Wings lead the series 3-0 against the Stars, so if there are any doubts about the health of Franzen, he might as well just sit out, rest up, and get ready for the Cup Finals.
May 13, 2008
Johan Franzen is still awaiting his test results as there is no word on what is causing his headaches, according to the Detroit News. He was forced his miss his second straight game last night due to concussion-like symptoms. He was scheduled to undergo a wide arsenal of tests at Detroit Medical Center earlier in the day on Monday. Ken Holland stated, "He came to the rink the day after Game 1 against Dallas and said he's been having headaches every day for a week or 10 days or whatever it was. And we just decided, 'OK, that's not normal.' It's not to the point where it's major symptoms, but it's just constant headaches. Sometimes he takes a pill and it goes away, but then it comes back. I don't want to start speculating with you. And that's why we're saying 'concussion-like symptoms' right now, because we really don't know what's going on."

Our View:Franzen led the league 12 playoff goals prior to his exit, and the team has rallied without him as they hold a 3-0 lead in the series versus Dallas.
May 12, 2008
