Evgeni Malkin notched a goal in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Senators. The goal was unassisted.

Our View:He is off to a solid start and should once again challenge 50 goals in 2008.
September 24, 2008
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist and the Pittsburgh beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in a preseason game Wednesday night according to the AP.

Our View:Malkin was a beast last season while notching 106 points and 78 penalty minutes. Both of his points on Wednesday came on special teams and without linemate Sidney Crosby.
July 1, 2008
Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins have reached an agreement in principle to sign the scoring star to a 5-year contract extension, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Terms of the deal haven't been announced, but it is believed that the deal will very closely resemble the 5-year, $43.5 million deal of Sidney Crosby.

Our View:It's fitting that both stars sign similar contracts since both are equally important to the team's goal of once again hoisting the Stanley Cup. Malkin really stepped up this season when Crosby went down with an injury, and overall he scored 47 goals and totaled 106 points. He is a top-5 selection no matter the format in 2008.
June 25, 2008
Evgeni Malkin won't be moving to Russia to sign a mega dollar contract, and in fact he might be willing to take a lower salary to sign a huge long-term deal with the Penguins, according to the Post-Gazette.

Our View:Now that's what a leader does. Malkin had hoped to allow the team to save a few million to help keep Ryan Malone and Marian Hossa in the fold. Time will tell if that happens, but you have to give the young skater credit for being willing to allow the team to save a few bucks to keep the roster together.

Updating an ongoing story, reports are coming forth that Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins are currently working on a new long-term deal to keep the offensive powerhouse in Pittsburgh, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Several sources have reported various representatives from a budding Russian professional league have contacted Malkin to steal him away, reportedly receiving offers of $12.5 million per season. Now Malkin's agent, J.P. Barry, is reporting that negotiations with the Penguins have the two parties in a "framework" for a new long-term deal to stay in the NHL.
June 20, 2008
Updating an earlier report, the IIHF is stating that reports circulating that Evgeni Malkin would be offered a massive contract to return to play in Russia are false, this according to the Sports Network. "Although there will be no imminent Player Transfer Agreement between the IIHF and the NHL, all involved parties are in principal agreement to honor each other's contracts," IIHF president Rene Fasel said. "We would view any signing, from either side, of a player under a valid contract, who does not have any legally valid out-clause, to be a clear violation of the mutual understanding and existing principle. It would potentially be punishable with suspended national team eligibility and suspension from all competition or activity organized by the IIHF or any IIHF member national association."

Our View:Apparently a slow news day led to an erroneous report. We doubt the NHL or Russia wants to cause an international incident over Malkin, so look for him to continue his spectacular career in Pittsburgh.
June 20, 2008
Several teams in Russia's revamped pro hockey league want to steal Evgeni Malkin away from the NHL by offering him a deal that would make him hockey's highest paid player, and by a wide margin, according to The Star. He is expected to be offered a multi-year deal, at $12.5 million (US currency) per campaign. As of now, Washington Capitals' star Alex Ovechkin is the top-paid player in the NHL at just under $9.6 million a season. A high-ranking official in the rival Russian league said, "Hey, we can afford to pay more than the NHL right now. Our economy is commodities-based so we're not going through the same problems that you have in America."

Our View:Malkin is one of the NHL's brightest young stars, as he notched 47 goals and 59 assists (106 points) with the Penguins in 2007-08. Hopefully he will remain in the NHL.
June 19, 2008
The Penguins are reportedly trying to complete a blockbuster deal with the Kings prior to the start of the NHL draft, according to Slam Sports. League sources say Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero offered stud center Evgeni Malkin to the Kings for the number two overall pick in the draft and a player, possibly center Mike Cammalleri.

Our View:Malkin has one-year left on his entry-level contract, at a bargain of $984,000, but Shero wants to sign winger Marian Hossa before he becomes an unrestricted free agent, a deal that could cost Pittsburgh upward of $8 million a year.
June 13, 2008
Evgeni Malkin stated that he is close to signing a contract extension with the Penguins, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He believes a long-term deal is on the way, and he said, "I'm thinking maybe five or six years. I'm an easy guy to deal with. I'd love to stay in Pittsburgh."

Our View:The NHL's collective bargaining agreement forbids the Penguins from signing Malkin to an extension until July 1. Malkin said he expects the extension will be signed "soon" after that date. Malkin also shrugged off rumors that he could be traded to create salary-cap space.
June 5, 2008
Evgeni Malkin revealed that he was sick during the playoffs, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Malkin was held scoreless in the first four games of the Stanley Cup Finals against Detroit, and said, "I was sick. But I don't think it was a major factor."

Our View:Malkin racked up 106 points over 82 games in the regular season, and had a great year for Pittsburgh, despite falling short in their bid to hoist the Stanley Cup.
May 29, 2008
Evgeni Malkin impressed his coach with his play in Game 3, according to a report in the Associated Press. “I liked Malkin’s game. I thought it was his best game in the final,” coach Michel Therrien said. “Even if he didn’t score, I thought he generates a lot, he was skating well.

Our View:Malkin still only has one goal in seven games, and even worse he has but a single point in five games, which is just about as poorly as he has produced all season. Look for Malkin to bring his "A" game in Game 4 as he is simply too talented to stay down for too long.
May 26, 2008
Evgeni Malkin has fallen off the Stanley Cup map since taking a hard hit from Philadelphia's Mike Richards in the opener of the East finals.

Our View:The MVP finalist has one goal and one assist in the six games since and appeared to run out of gas in the third period of tonight's game.
May 18, 2008
Evgeni Malkin scored a goal in Game 5 to help the Penguins defeat the Flyers and move on in the playoffs.

Our View:Malkin, and linemate Peter Sykora had been suffering from the flu, but both skated in this one. As for Malkin, this was his first goal in four games, and he now has nine goals and 19 points during the NHL's second season.
May 18, 2008
As the Pittsburgh Penguins seek to put an end to the Philadelphia Flyers today in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, up 3-1 in the series, concerns about winger Evgeni Malkin and his slight fall from grace have formed, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Scott Burnside of ESPN notes the prolific young winger was the best player in the playoffs over the first two rounds of play, netting 17 total points over 10 games, but he has just one assist and is minus-3 over his last three. As a result, Burnside wonders if he is battling fatigue, being just 21-years-old and having never played for such a long stretch. Today's match will be the 96th game he has played this season, significantly more than he has ever completed in one full season. It's a small span of time, but there is reason for concern. A rest could be beneficial and may be gained with a win today.
May 9, 2008
Evgeni Malkin scored two dazzling goals five minutes apart in the Penguins 4-2 victory over Philadelphia in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals Friday.

Our View:Malkin, who is only 21 but is the leading scorer in the playoffs with 17 points following a three-point night, scored with 6.5 seconds left in the first period with a tired Flyers line on the ice to put Pittsburgh up 3-2.
May 4, 2008
Evgeni Malkin scored in Sunday's series-ending win over the Rangers. The 21-year-old center finished the series with four goals and three assists in five games.

Our View:Malkin should be a first-round pick in fantasy leagues next year, and his playoff numbers don't surprise anyone.
April 30, 2008
Evgeni Malkin was named a finalist for the Hart Trophy awarded each year to the league MVP.

Our View:Malkin was second in the league in scoring with 106 points, and he led the NHL in scoring from January 1st on with 65 points in 44 games largely playing without the support of the injured Sidney Crosby.
April 29, 2008
Pittsburgh continues to shine in their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the New York Rangers, using a 5-3 victory this evening to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. More than anyone, winger Evgeni Malkin is enjoying the ride, adding another two goals and an assist to a playoff run that defies explanation.

Our View:The Pens are riding a seven game win streak in these playoffs, and Malkin is the general leading the army with five goals and eight assists in the postseason. Teammate Sidney Crosby may be the man folks debate as the best player in the game, but Malkin is the one putting points on the board.
April 29, 2008
The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers have all but assured the headlines won't be mentioning any of the goalies from tonight's Game-3 semifinal playoff battle. Both teams have posted three goals each with just a few minutes left to play in the 2nd period.

Our View:For Pittsburgh, the feat is rather impressive considering the team has combined for just 12 shots on goal, less than half of the number (29) posted by the Rangers. All three of those Pittsburgh goals were scored in the 1st period, topped by winger Evgeni Malkin's fourth goal of the series. On the flip side, both Ranger wingers Martin Straka and Jaromir Jagr has a goal and an assist.
April 27, 2008
Pittsburgh center Evgeni Malkin managed just three shots on goal in today's 2-0 win over the New York Rangers, but his assist to center Jordan Staal was good for the win.

Our View:In six playoff games, Malkin has failed to post at least one point in just one. Today's performance gives him three goals and seven assists in these playoffs.
April 25, 2008
Evgeni Malkin scored on a power play goal with less than two minutes remaining helping the Pens rally from a three-goal deficit and beat the Rangers 5-4 on Friday night.

Our View:New York appeared to be in complete control of the game with a 3-0 lead late in the second period before Pittsburgh started their run.
April 16, 2008
Evgeni Malkin scored a goal and was named the first star as the Penguins defeated the Senators 3-1 to complete their first round sweep of the Canadian club.

Our View:The goal was the second of the playoffs for Malkin and gives him two goals and five assists in four playoff contests as it's obvious that Malkin is impervious to pressure.
April 11, 2008
Evgeni Malkin set up three goals, two scored by Petr Sykora, on Friday night as the Penguins took a 2-0 lead over the Senators in the first round of the playoffs. Though he didn't score on the night, Malkin did take a game-high eight shots on goal.

Malkin was one of the most underrated superstars in hockey this season and it now appears he’ll use the playoff stage to bring his name into households across the hockey nation.

Evgeni Malkin avoided a major injury on Monday night as his face was just cut by the skate of Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky, this according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I started to feel the blood going down my face, so I knew right away [there was a cut]," said interpreter George Birman. Luckily for Malkin, he only needed eight stiches to close the cut. He would need a huge week to catch Alex Ovechkin for the scoring lead, but Malkin has still be spectacular with 104 points on the year. Continue to start Malkin as he won't miss any game action.
March 30, 2008

Evgeni Malkin was working in top form once again in Pittsburgh’s 7-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils. Malkin scored two goals and added an assist, bringing him to 44 goals and 58 assists on the season. Malkin has been one of the top fantasy players this year and continues to shine even with Sidney Crosby sidelined with injury. February 19, 2008
Evgeni Malkin had the go ahead assist to help the Pittsburgh Penguins erase a two-goal deficit in the third period for a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. Malkin now has 79 points to move ahead of fellow Russian Alexander Ovechkin for the top spot in league scoring.
February 17, 2008

Malkin has scored a point in 8-straight games during which time he has six multi-point games and 19 points overall. How do you spell fantasy all-star? M-A-L-K-I-N.
