Ryan Malone has agreed to a seven-year, $31.5 million contract with the Lightning, TSN.ca reports. His exclusive negotiating right were traded to the Lightning on Saturday. Malone notched 27 goals and 24 assists over 77 games for the Penguins last season.

Our View:Looks who cashed in on a career year, huh? Malone is primed to continue his ascent as an all-around force up front, though just how high his ceiling is is unclear.

The NHL free agent market is as fresh as can be, but the Tampa Bay Lightning have wasted no time getting busy, according to TSN.ca. TSN is reporting the Lightning have traded a fourth-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for the negotiation rights to forwards Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts, scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

Our View:Sources say if the Lightning were to sign Malone, the more coveted free agent of the two, the fourth-round pick would become a third-round pick. Malone has indicated he intends to go to July 1 to see what the market would bear for his services. Whether this development changes that remains to be seen. It is more likely the Lightning may be able to sign the veteran Roberts, who said during the playoffs that he intended to play again but knew it would not be for the Penguins.

It appears that potential unrestricted free agent Ryan Malone may be paddling down the Ohio river into Columbus come draft day. The Penguins winger has garnered interest from several teams. However the Blue Jackets are more than willing to give up their second and third round picks in exchange for Malone, given that they already have two first round picks.

Our View:Columbus should then have the opportunity to draft a franchise blueliner sixth overall, such as Luke Schenn, and perhaps a long term project forward with their 19th overall selection. Coach Ken Hitchcock will have plenty to work with in the very near future.

Forward Ryan Malone is not interested in being traded prior to July 1. He'd rather become an unrestricted free agent, and agent Mike Luit says his client might choose not to sign a deal if he is traded. "Ryan doesn't want to go down that road," Luit informs the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:Malone (and his agent) obviously prefer an open market where teams can bid against each other. This could get ugly if the Pens accept an offer between now and July 1. Either way, it sounds like Malone won't be back in Pittsburgh.

The Blue Jackets are reportedly close to acquiring the rights to Ryan Malone, according to TSN.ca. The Penguins' forward is to become a unrestricted free agent on July 1, and Columbus is said to acquire his rights as soon as Tuesday.

Our View:Vancouver and Minnesota are also believed to be interested in acquiring Malone's rights. The source indicates the Blue Jackets would likely offer Malone a four or five-year contract worth between $4.5 million and $5.5 million per season. Malone reached a career-best 27 goals in 2007-08 with Pittsburgh.

Ryan Malone could be on the Oilers' radar, according to the Edmonton Journal. Oilers' GM Kevin Lowe may have contacted Pittsburgh Penguins' GM Ray Shero about unrestricted free-agent winger Ryan Malone. The Columbus Blue Jackets have also reportedly inquired about getting the rights to Malone, who has had two lowball offers and is certainly going to test the market on July 1.

Our View:Malone broke out with 27 goals and 24 assists with the Penguins in 2007-08, and could potentially challenge 30 goals next season.

Ryan Malone's agent, Mike Liut, had preliminary discussions with Penguins general manager Ray Shero regarding a new deal, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Not much was exchanged," Liut said. "We talked briefly during the regular season, too. They have a lot of free agents. They have a [salary] cap they have to deal with. They have a lot of things to think about. They have some really good young players there. One of the hallmarks of the new [collective bargaining] deal is sometimes you have to pick and choose. [The Penguins] are in the process of doing that."

Our View:Malone, who had 51 points and 103 PIM last year, is an unrestricted free agent. The Pens are hoping to get a hometown discount, but we'll see if that happens.

Ryan Malone took a shot to the face in the second period on Monday night and left the game, the Ticker notes. The forward broke his nose in the series opener against the Red Wings. Malone returned to the bench to start the third period.

Our View:You aren't such a pretty boy now, are you Malone? Joking aside, he is showing a lot of toughness.
May 25, 2008
Ryan Malone has been moved up to the first-line with Sidney Crosby and Marian Hossa, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Pascal Dupuis has been dropped from the first-line to the third.

Our View:Dupuis failed to make an impact on the first-line, and Malone is playing well with six goals and nine assists through the playoffs. Pittsburgh trails Detroit 1-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals, and coach Michel Therrien decided to alter the lines for Game 2.

The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to surprise with their maturity and a 6-0 win Sunday over the Philadelphia clinched a Stanley Cup final berth for the Flyers, this according to TSN.ca. ''We still have a long way to go,'' said Penguins winger Ryan Malone. ''So there's nothing to celebrate, that's for sure.'' ''We're not going to wear these shirts or these hats,'' said forward Pascal Dupuis. ''We want the big prize.''

Our View:The big prize was what the Penguins had in mind when they drafted Sidney Crosby first overall July 30, 2005. He was the franchise saviour. Depending on, or regardless of, who wins the West (Detroit leads the series 3-2 over Dallas), could one have ever imagined the 20-year old Crosby could carry his team into the Stanley Cup final less then three years, and maybe even win?

Ryan Malone scored two goals and had an assist to led the Penguins to a stunning 6-0 victory over the Flyers on Sunday to propel the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1992.

Our View:Both of Malone's goals were on the power-play, and he enters the finals with six goals and 15 points, not bad for a secondary scoring option huh? Like the Pens need anymore scoring options.
April 14, 2008
Ryan Malone (flu) missed practice for the Penguins on Sunday, but he is still expected to be in the lineup for the Pens for Game 3 on Monday against the Senators, this according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:Malone has four points in two games and has been a huge factor skating on a line with Evgeni Malkin and Petr Sykora thus far, and look for that to continue as the trio has undeniable chemistry right now.
April 12, 2008
Ryan Malone scored two goals and an assist in a winning effort against the Senators on Friday, and he has been named the first star of the night, according to NHL.com. The Penguins now hold a 2-0 lead in the series.

Our View:Malone scored 27 goals in the regular season, and is off to a great start in the playoffs.
April 11, 2008
Ryan Malone scored two goals in the third period, including the game winner, on Friday night. Malone also added an assist in the win over the Senators. Pretty quietly this season Malone was able to score 27 times while contributing 103 PIM, so it would stand to reason that his gritty play would be successful in the playoffs.
March 25, 2008
Ryan Malone carried the weight for the Penguins in a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils this evening, netting a goal and an assist. Malone now touts 50 points on the season, a valiant effort put forth in the shadows of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
February 19, 2008
Ryan Malone netted two pucks in the final four minutes as the Pittsburgh Penguins erased a two-goal third-period deficit for a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. Malone now has 35 points on the season, 19 of those coming by goals.
