Eric Staal collected a pair of goals in Thursday's 4-2 preseason win over Nashville. Both goals were scored on a wrist shot.

Our View:Staal is off to a strong start and shall remain a rock solid fantasy center for 2008, capable of topping 40 goals.

The AP reports that Hurricanes center Eric Staal played for the first time in the preseason in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Philadelphia. He had seven of the team's 21 shots on goal through two periods and finished with eight shots and no goals.

Our View:Not sure why he missed out on their previous games but he should be good to go. Of 310 shots last season, Staal only converted 38 of them into goals.

Last week Eric Staal signed a new seven year contract for over $55 million, but the NHL said that the contract is a no go. The NHL has issues with the no-trade clause that is in Staal's contract. TSN.ca is reporting that the re-submitted contract will simply say that the no-trade clause kicks in as soon as he's eligible for unrestricted free agency.

Our View:Last year Staal played in all of the Hurricanes games last year and netted 38 goals and helped on another 44.

According to sources, the Carolina Hurricanes will announce the signing of center Eric Staal to a 7-year, $56-60 million deal on Thursday, according to ESPN.com. "They know I want to be here, they know that I really enjoy the area and love the organization," Staal said.

Our View:We'd want to be there too if someone gave us that much loot. The deal will not kick in until next season as he still has one year left on a deal that owes him $5 million this year. Look for Stall to be a point-per-game performer this season season, one with the capability of cracking the 40-goal plateau.

Eric Staal is close to signing a long term extension with the 'Canes, and he showed up in great shape proving he is ready to be an even bigger part of the Carolina offense, according to the Charlotte Observer. "I think I'm a point-a-game or better player," he said. "I proved that the one year, and last year was a good season, but I still think I have more.

Our View:Stall scored a 100 points in 2005 only to dip to 70 the following season. He bounced back somewhat last season with 38 goals and 82 points, including 14 power-play markers. He won't be one of the first names off the board, but he has proven to be a 35-goal, 85 point performer the past three years, and guys like that should be taking very early.

Eric Staal and the Hurricanes continue to work on a long-term contract. They hope to have something done before training camp opens next week. "They know I want to be here, they know that I really enjoy the area and love the organization," Staal tells the AP. "It's just a matter of finding the (common) ground that works. I think we're getting close as we move forward, but it's not something that I am pressing or that's going to bother me when the season starts."

Our View:A new deal would be nice, but Staal is going to be a top-50 fantasy player even if he enters the season under his current contract.

Eric Staal left Team Canada to attend a family funeral, according to TSN.ca. Staal flew back to Thunder Bay, Ontario to attend his grandfather's funeral. He will not play in Wednesday's quarterfinal game against Norway.

Our View:He will rejoin the team for their game on Friday, if Canada advances. Sam Gagner will be added to the roster and will suit up against Norway on Wednesday. Gagner has yet to appear in a game at this yer's IIHF World Championship. Staal has scored four goals and added three assists over six games for Canada, and racked up 82 points over 82 games for Carolina this season.

Eric Staal continued his tremendous scoring pace of late with a goal and an assist on Wednesday night. Staal now has seven goals and 23 points in his last 14 games as he has been the lone steadying force amongst a team beset by injuries. Mark down Staal as a top playoff option if the Canes qualify.

Eric Staal was named the most valuable player in Sunday’s All-Star Game. He scored a pair of goals and added an assist while playing for the Eastern Conference, which topped the Western Conference by a score of 8-7.

Our View:Poor Rick Nash picked up a hat trick and still didn’t come away with the MVP award. Hopefully fantasy owners enjoyed the weekend off, as the players will get back to work on Tuesday night.
