The News & Observer reports that Erik Cole played only eight minutes last night. Cole, who still is dealing with the effects of the broken neck he sustained seven months ago, missed most of the contest after a hard collision. "It's just something I'm going to have to deal with," Cole said.

The Hurricanes re-signed Erik Cole on Wednesday to a three-year, $12 million contract, following an injury-shortened regular season in which he set career-highs in scoring, according to the AP. Cole had 30 goals, 29 assists and 59 points despite missing the final 22 regular-season games with a fractured vertebra in his neck.

After returning from the fractured vertebra in his neck for Game 6, Erik Cole is expected to play between 15 and 20 minutes in Game 7 tonight, according ot the News & Observer. Cole had missed 46 games since suffering the injury on March 4.

Erik Cole is still recovering from a serious neck injury and will not return the Hurricanes this season, according to the AP. Cole suffered a fractured vertebra on March 4 from a hit from behind by Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik. Cole had resumed skating with the team this week but the team decided to shut him down after receiving results of a CT performed Friday.

If Erik Cole continues to progress in his recovery from two compression fractures in his neck, he'll undergo another CT scan next week to determine whether he has fully healed, according to the Buffalo News. It still appears unlikely he'll return during the playoffs.

Erik Cole skated again on Friday, but the Hurricanes still plan to take things slowly with his attempted return from a fractured neck, according to the News & Observer. "This is not an injury that anybody wants to rush," coach Peter Laviolette said. "I have said all along, first and foremost, we're happy that he's going to be able to return to the game of life and spend it with his wife and kids. That is first and foremost. Secondly, if he plays in the future, whether it's next year, in training camp, if he comes back and plays hockey for the Carolina Hurricanes, that would be terrific. The playoffs really are on the back burner."

Erik Cole skated for 20 minutes Thursday, the first time he's been on the ice since his neck was broken March 4 on a hit from behind by Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik, according to the Buffalo News. He hopes to join his teammates on a noncontact basis Sunday. "Right now I'm just trying to ease my way into it and see what I can tolerate and what I can't," Cole said. "I felt good today, so we'll put a little more structure behind it tomorrow and see how I progress."

Erik Cole said there is no timetable for when he might return from his fractured neck, according to the News & Observer. However, he hopes to get back on the ice next week. "You always have hope, but we have to be very careful," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said. "This is a serious injury and I've said all along it's between the doctors and Erik when he makes that decision."
