Player Notes
December 1, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk has scored eight goals and 13 assists over 23 games, but coach John Anderson decided to demote him to the fourth line, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:He is being paired with Marty Reasoner and Chris Thorburn. Anderson noted that he was going to make some changes as he has been displeased with the play of the team.
November 28, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk scored his eighth goal of the season in his 22 game on ice for the Thrashers.

Our View:At his current rate, Ilya would score 30-goals which is a far cry from the 41+ goals that he has scored in each of the past four seasons as he has scored more goals in that time than any other NHL skater (197 goals). Consider this a good time to buy low on the Russian sniper if his current owner has grown frustrated with the slow pace.
November 22, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk was held pointless with a (-1) rating as the Thrashers were shutout by the Blue Jackets 2-0.

Our View:Every player has an off game and this was more of an off game by a team than anything. He should be scoring again in not time.
November 16, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk dished out his ninth and tenth assists of the year, but did not score, and the Thrashers were downed by the Flyers, 4-3.

Our View:Kovalchuk has six goals on the season in 17 games, which isn't quite the pace fantasy owners were hoping for.
November 4, 2008
The Thrashers' co-owner Bruce Levenson said the GM Don Waddell's job is safe, according to the Sporting News.

Our View:Levenson wouldn't rule out future changes, however, which does leave the door open for a team that is currently struggling in attendance as well as in the standings.
November 2, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk scored two goals and added an assist, and the Atlanta Thrashers held off the Florida Panthers 5-3 Sunday night to end a six-game losing streak.

Our View:The disgruntled forward has nine points in 11 games with Atlanta this season.
November 2, 2008
Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk is apparently not thrilled playing in Atlanta, and a Russian newspaper reported that both Toronto and Montreal were going after him, but those rumors are unfounded, according to the Toronto Star. "I can absolutely tell you there has been no conversations about any player with Atlanta, let alone the player you mentioned," said Toronto GM Cliff Fletcher.

Our View:Kovalchuk has just six points (3g, 3a) through 10 games this season, but he is a supreme talent who should provide fantasy owners with another solid season.
October 29, 2008
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that coach John Anderson has reunited Erik Christensen and Jason Williams with Ilya Kovalchuk in a trio that last worked together in the preseason.

Our View:He is trying to get pucks in the net and hopes that this trio will solve the Thrashers' scoring difficulties. Kovalchuk has six points through nine games, but he is capable of doing even better.
October 25, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk has started out slow this year, but he picked it up Saturday, collecting a goal and an assist in the Thrashers loss to the Bruins.

Our View:Kovalchuk has just four points (2g, 2a) in seven games before this. He has just two shots in this contest, bringing his season total to 18, which isn't nearly enough for someone as skilled as he is.
October 24, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk continued his slow start to the year on Friday night as he recorded a (-2) with just a single shot on goal in the Thrashers loss to the Wings.

Our View:Kovalchuk has scored just twice in seven games and even worse is the fact that he has just 17 shots on goal, an average of under two and a half shots a game which is exceedingly low for a skater who has averaged four shots a game the past four years. If his current owner is getting antsy, make a push to acquire the talented winger as he will surely rebound.
October 16, 2008
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Ilya Kovalchuk has been manning the point on a new power play unit that features four forwards.

Our View:The Thrashers are 0-for-7 on the power play in their last two games and are looking for a spark. Kovalchuk has three points in three games.
October 14, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk is still looking for his first goal of the season after scoring 52 in 2007, according to NHL.com.

Our View:He has two assists, and the goals should start to come for him soon enough. Atlanta hosts Minnesota tonight.
September 18, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk returned to Atlanta from Russia in preparation for training camp, but he was minus his two front lower teeth, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Kovalchuk explained that he lost the teeth playing hockey in Russia, but will get two implants next week. Hopefully, Kovalchuk's new teeth won't affect his scoring ability, as he remains a top option for fantasy owners.
May 19, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk helped to lead the Russian National Team to the 2008 IIHF World Championship over Canada five to four, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Kovalchuck scored late in the game to tie it and then scored in OT to seal the deal, a nice comeback from a suspension early in the tournament for fighting.
April 7, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk isn't happy with the way that the season went in Atlanta this year, and he wasn't shy about it while speaking to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "I want to win something before my contract is up," Kovalchuk said. "Hopefully, we can make the right moves and go forward. Not stand in the same place..."It's six years here now and nothing really changed." When a guy with 50 goals in two of the last three seasons speaks, you would hope the organization will listen. The team lost Marian Hossa at the deadline this year because they couldn't pay him, and the same thing could happen in two years when Kovalchuck's contract runs out.
March 31, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk scored two goals in the third period to lead the Thrashers to a 2-0 victory over the Lightning. Ilya now has 11 goals in his last 15 games, and with 52 markers on the year he has tied his career best mark from 2005-06. The Thrashers may be going nowhere, but Kovalchuk will remain a top-10 fantasy pick next season regardless of his linemates giving his dynamic offensive game.
March 18, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk continues to work as the catalyst for offense in Atlanta, netting a goal and an assist in the Thrashers' 2-3 loss to Philadelphia. Tonight's performance gives Kovalchuk 83 points on the season, one of few highlights for the Thrashers this season.
March 13, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk recorded a hat trick as he scored three goals in a 6-4 win over Calgary. He also added an assist and now has 80 points for the season.
March 5, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 43rd goal of the season for the Trashers in a loss to the Hurricanes. Kovalchuk also had an assist though points have still been hard to come by for the sniper with only four points in his last six games.
February 15, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 40th goal Friday night as the Thrashers defeated the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in a shootout. Kovalchuk has 66 points on the season for the 29-27-4 Thrashers.
February 13, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk, hot for almost all of the season, has hit his first protracted slump of the year with only two tallies in his last nine games. Ilya is still second in the league with 39 goals though his play has appeared to have suffered a bit since he injured his knee. Still, he is one pace to easily eclipse 50-goals, so don't go bailing on him just because he has hit a rough patch.
February 5, 2008
As we reported earlier, Ilya Kovalchuk returned to action on Tuesday night. He wore a brace to protect his injured knee, but that didn't stop him from scoring a goal early in the second period. It looks the superstar, Thrashers and fantasy folk were very fortunate to have him back this quickly, since the knee-to-knee hit he took could have caused much more damage.
February 5, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk made an unexpected return to the ice for Tuesday's game. It had been reported that he wouldn't get back in the mix until Thursday. The game is just getting underway, but he's playing, as he comes back from a knee injury.
February 5, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk skated before practice on Monday morning, but he's unlikely to play Tuesday night. "He's doing good. He'll be day-to-day. He's getting much better than he was before the weekend," coach Don Waddell said in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I think our doctors would be more comfortable if [he didn't play]. I think he's out." Waddell said Kovalchuk, who's missed the last two games with a knee injury, was probable for Thursday's game against Vancouver.
February 3, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk stayed home and rested his sore knee, but he'll test it out with another workout on Sunday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. How the joint responds to the workout over the next 24-48 hours will determine whether he'll be able to return to action for Tuesday's game. Whether he can lace up his skates for that one or not, it sounds like Kovy avoided any long-term damage to his knee.
February 2, 2008
The Thrashers can take a collective sigh of relief after an MRI revealed that Ilya Kovalchuk has no structural damage in his knee, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Kovy said doctors initially told him he'd miss 1-3 weeks due to the injury, but he plans to work out Saturday to see how the joint reacts. He'll be re-examined early next week, so keep him out of your lineups for now.
February 1, 2008
Ilya Kovalchuk will miss at least two games due to the knee injury he sustained during Wednesday's contest, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He went for a precautionary MRI Thursday, though the results haven't been made public. Kovy had no swelling in the joint, and coach Don Waddell said he expected the MRI to be negative. For now, it appears the superstar escaped with minimal damage and could miss just a couple of games.
January 24, 2008
The NHL suspended Ilya Kovalchuk for one game for an illegal hit he made during a game on Tuesday against the Rangers. The AP reports that he will not be allowed to play in the rematch between those teams on Thursday.

Our View:Obviously, fantasy owners should find a replacement for Kovalchuk on Thursday and then put him back in the lineup as quickly as possible.
