Wes Walz, who announced his retirement last December, has been asked about his interest in taking on an assistant coaching position with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to the Star Tribune. "I was asked if I'd be interested in a position if it's available, and my answer was, 'I would be,'" Walz said.

Our View:Hey, it's a slow news day. The Lightning would also like to speak with Rich Tocchet and Cap Reader about the opening.

Wes Walz is expected to announce his retirement Saturday morning, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. He played in more games (438) than any other Wild player, and his departure leaves Marian Gaborik as the only original Wild player on the team.

Wes Walz missed his third game on Monday while taking a personal leave of absence. The team has declined to say why Walz is taking time off, although they have stated that it is not due to any family issues.

Our View:There are rumors that Walz may opt to retire, which seems odd given that he was skating on the top line before he left. He’s one of head coach Jacques Lemaire’s favorite players, so we do not believe his problems are related to a conflict between him and management.
