Kyle Calder was able to skate on Friday. However, he isn't likely to return to action until later this month, according to the LA Times. Since he's recovering from a fractured thumb, skating doesn't mean much to his recovery. Gripping his stick and practicing will be a more definitive sign of an imminent return.

The Kings placed Kyle Calder on injured reserve on Friday. He has an injured left thumb that will cause him to miss at least the next week of action. Calder has three goals and six points in 13 contests this season.

The Kings signed Kyle Calder to a two-year, $5.5 million contract on Monday, according to the AP. He split last season between the Flyers and Red Wings, scoring 14 goals and adding 21 assists in 78 games.

Red Wings GM Ken Holland said he won't re-sign Kyle Calder this offseason, according to the Detroit News. He scored 14 points in 19 games after being acquired at the trade deadline, but he didn't fit into the Wings' long-term plans.

Kyle Calder was traded to the Red Wings Monday in a three-team deal involving Chicago and Philadelphia. Calder is expected to take over for the traded Jason Williams on Detroit's second line.
