Player Notes
November 16, 2008
Flyers winger Simon Gagne notched a goal and two assists to help lead Philly to a 4-3 win over the visiting Thrashers.

Our View:Gagne is one of the better scoring forwards in the league for fantasy owners. He now has 11 goals and 11 assists in 16 games for the Flyers.
November 13, 2008
Simon Gagne scored two goals on Thursday night with both goals coming while the Flyers were short-handed.

Our View:That's 10 goals in 14 games including four short-handed goals for Gagne. Clearly he has overcome the concussion issues and he has returned to being one of the most valuable left wings in the entire NHL.
November 6, 2008
For just the second time in 11 games Simon Gagne was held pointless as he was a (-2) in the Flyers' 4-1 loss to the Senators.

Our View:Gagne has rebounded from his concussion with aplomb scoring 14 points in 11 games, so we can easily overlook a down evening. For those of you that took a chance that he would return to prominence after a down season, you are looking awfully smart right now.
November 2, 2008
Simon Gagne scored a goal and assisted on another, but it wasn't enough as the Flyers fell to the Oilers, 5-4.

Our View:Gagne now has eight goals in 10 games, and 14 points overall. He should be on active rosters of all fantasy owners right now.
October 28, 2008
Simon Gagne had two goals (one shorthanded) and two assists in the win over Atlanta Tuesday.

Our View:The winger is off to a nice start, with seven goals and three assists in eight games.
October 25, 2008
Simon Gagne returned to the ice in Friday's win over the Devils after missing Wednesday's game with the flu, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:This is good news for the Flyers, as well as fantasy owners, as he racked up five goals and an assist over six games played.
October 24, 2008
Simon Gagne is questionable for Friday's game against the Devils, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:Gagne missed Wednesday's game, but you can leave him in with a fairly open schedule Friday. If he misses on Friday, you may want to bench him on Saturday. All 30 NHL teams will be in action for the first time in league history, so you will certainly have healthier options that can guarantee you stats.
October 22, 2008
Simon Gagne is out for Wednesday's game against the Sharks with the flu, according to the AP.

Our View:It's possible he could miss multiple games due to the illness. He has five points through five games this season and has scored on four of his 14 shots.
October 18, 2008
The Philadelphia Flyers changed the start time of their game October 25 from the evening to four in the afternoon because the Phillies will be playing Game 3 of the World Series that night, according to the AP.

Our View:The two teams' complexes are right next to each other, so the traffic would have been much worse if both games were happening at the same time.
October 14, 2008
Simon Gagne scored his third goal of the seson in his third game as the Flyers fell 3-2 to the Penguins in overtime on Tuesday.

Our View:Gagne isn't showing any concussion symptoms and is off to a stellar start. Expect him to be among the team leaders in goals scored.
September 29, 2008
Simon Gagne will play in at least two of the Flyers three preseason games this week, according to The Philadelphia Enquirer.

Our View:Gagne, and the Flyers, are taking it easy in the early going since the team clearly needs his scoring presence off the wing for the long haul. So far so good in his comeback from concussion, but we are still skeptical about his ability to return to 40-goal territory until we see a bit more of him on the ice.
September 27, 2008
The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Simon Gagne will play in his first game on Saturday since February 10th when he was hit with a concussion.

Our View:It's expected that Gagne will play on the left wing of the Flyers' top line along with Mike Richards and Daniel Briere. Do to the nature of concussions, you'll want to be sure you have a sound backup plan in place should Gagne suffer another one.
September 24, 2008
Simon Gagne is targeting Saturday for his return to the lineup, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:He hasn't experienced any ill side effects regarding his post-concussion recovery. He still needs to get back into game shape, however.
September 22, 2008
Simon Gagne will not suit up for the clubs first preseason game, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:This is nothing to get nervous about. NHL rules dictate that only eight veterans need to be active for preseason games, and given that the club has 66 players in camp, well, a whole lot of guys wont be playing. Gagne remains on pace to begin the year after being limited to 25 games last season because of his concussion.
September 21, 2008
Philadelphia winger Simon Gagne scored twice in the Flyers' intrasquad scrimmage, but is still waiting to see how responds to being hit for the first time, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "This is one step. The next step is to get the first hit. I have to be confident, and I will be," Gagne remarked.

Our View:Gagne played in only 25 games last season as he suffered from concussion problems, so he is naturally anxious to see how he holds up the first time he is checked into the boards.
September 16, 2008
Flyers winger Simon Gagne is ready to return to action and has been cleared by doctors to resume playing after he missed all but 25 games last season due to a concussion, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:Gagne can be an elite goal-scorer when healthy, as evidenced by his 89 goals in the two seasons before last. If fully healthy, he is a very good selection at wing for fantasy owners.
September 5, 2008
Simon Gagne will enter the 2008 season free of the concussion related symptoms that he dealt with last season if you ask HC John Stevens or GM Paul Holmgren, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:Gagne was limited to just 25 games last season due to his concussion, and is looking to return to the level that saw him score 88 goals in 2005-06. If he can return to those scoring levels off the left wing, the Flyers will be in great shape. Still, until we see him take a hit on the ice we won't be sure about his status, so you will be taking a risk if you reach for Gagne early in your draft despite the upside.
May 23, 2008
Simon Gagne passed baseline and impact tests on Thursday "with flying colors," general manager Paul Holmgren informs the Philadelphia Daily News. The veteran battled concussion symptoms all season and appeared in only 25 games. His next hurdle will be to get in shape, as Holmgren says Gagne is currently a "little chubby."

Our View:Gagne's value will be depressed heading into 2008-09, for obvious reasons. The two-time All-Star could end up being a great value pick if he stays healthy, though.
May 22, 2008
Simon Gagne had a terribly disappointing 2007-08 season being limited to just 25 games of action, but both he and the team believe that he will be ready to go come next season, according to the Philadelphia Enquirer. "I believe that he'll be a good player for us next year and a healthy player," said GM Paul Holmgren, pointing out the Gagne was skating at season's end. "I haven't seen any reports or heard from our doctors or the doctors that have seen Simon that have led me to believe otherwise."

Our View:Gagne had back-to-back seasons of 40-goals in 2005-06, so look for him to be undervalued heading into pools next season marking him as an intriguing mid-round selection with considerable upside.
May 8, 2008
Simon Gagne still wants to play in these playoffs, and in order to make sure he has exhausted all his options, he will visit with his doctor one more time next week, according to the South Jersey Courier Post. "Of course, I want to play," Gagne said. "But on the other hand, I need to think about my career."

Our View:Our best bet is that Gagne has seen his last game action of the season. Gagne has suffered multiple setbacks in his battle with head trauma, so we would be shocked if he was cleared to play even if the Flyers make the Cup Finals.
May 5, 2008
Simon Gagne, who was limited to only 25 games this season due to a concussion, will not return for the Flyers in the playoffs no matter how long they continue to play, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. "He hasn't done anything in terms of fitness," GM Paul Holmgren said yesterday. "I don't see him being an option no matter how long this thing goes.

Our View:Too bad cause the Flyers could really use their high scoring winger in what figures to be a possible offensive explosion with the Penguins in the third round.
March 26, 2008
Simon Gagne will not return this season, unless the Flyers make it to the finals. "If we go all the way this year, you might see me skating again and getting ready again," Gagne tells the AP. "But, no, I’m not coming back." He has not played since February 10 due to a concussion.
February 22, 2008
Updating a previous report, Simon Gagne didn't suffer three concussions this year, he actually suffered only one that never healed according to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's one concussion," Gagne said Dr. James Kelly, a concussion specialist, told him. "It got worse and worse. Every time I was getting hit to the head, the symptoms were coming back." Obviously this is why that Gagne has been shut down for the rest of the season. There is every reason to expect a 100% recovery for Gagne, but given that everyone deals with concussions differently, he will be monitored closely before he is allowed to absorb any physical contact in the future.
February 21, 2008
Simon Gagne is officially out for the rest of the season, the result of what was originally believed to be three concussions. However, there was actually only one concussion that never fully healed according to a report on NHL.com. "Technically, I will be done for this year," Gagne said Thursday night. "I don't think I will be back this year. I think it will be fair to say I'll play next year." Even if the team reaches the playoffs, the decision has been made to shut down Gagne for the entire season no matter how long it lasts. Gagne finishes the year with seven goals and 18 points in 25 disappointing games.
February 20, 2008
Simon Gagne is probably done for the year because of multiple concussions. Concussion specialist James Kelly suggested to Gagne Wednesday that the winger sit out the remainder of the season. "His advice to Simon was to shut it down for the remainder of the season," GM Paul Holmgren said in the AP. "As soon as we have had the opportunity to speak further with Dr. Kelly and Simon we can shed more light on this. Needless to say, we are very disappointed with this news." It's probably safe to go ahead and cut Gagne loose if you haven't already.
February 18, 2008
Simon Gagne is scheduled to see a specialist in Denver on Wednesday to find out if he can play again this season, according to Philly.com. Gagne suffered his third concussion last Sunday in Pittsburgh and will not be cleared to play for at least a week, and as mentioned in the report, could miss the remainder of the season.
February 13, 2008
Flyers coach John Stevens said Simon Gagne felt better but would remain out of action for four more days, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Gagne is recovering from his third concussion of the year, which he suffered on Sunday.
February 11, 2008
Flyers forward Simon Gagne is sidelined following his third concussion of the season, but he hopes to return before the end of the year, according to the AP. He was injured on his first shift of the Flyers' 4-3 loss at Pittsburgh on Sunday and sat out the final two periods. Gagne, who has seven goals and 18 points in 25 games, was examined Monday by the Flyers team doctor. "I don't think the season is lost right now," Gagne said. "Hopefully, I'm not going to have any more symptoms coming up. The way I feel right now is just a balance problem. When this goes away, I will be pretty much symptom free." Gagne suffered a concussion on Oct. 24, sat out four games, then had another concussion on Nov. 7 and missed the next 26 games.
February 10, 2008
Simon Gagne , who left Sunday's 4-3 loss versus the Pittsburgh Penguins, was diagnosed with a mild concussion, according to TSN.ca. The 27-year-old Gagne, who didn't play the final two periods, missed 26 games with dizziness after taking a hit from Florida's Jay Bouwmeester in the Flyers' 4-3 setback to the Panthers on October 24.
