Vincent Lecavalier of Canada reports that three-time All-Star Vincent Lecavalier has agreed to a contract extension that will pay him $77 million. He was entering the final year of a four-year, $27.5 million deal. The first overall pick of the 1998 draft, Lecavalier holds the franchise record in goals (273), points (602) and games played (710). He captured the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2006-07 for leading the league in goals with 52.

Our View: On Tuesday Barry Melrose signed on as the new coach, Wednesday the team announced that Bill Barber will resign as the director of player personnel and that goaltender Marc Denis' contract was bought out. The Lighting have been busy the last couple of days.

Barry Melrose has been named the new head coach of the Lightning, according to SI.com.

Our View:He is returning as a coach following 12 years as a television analyst. Melrose coached the Kings from 1992 to 1995, and led the club to the Stanley Cup Finals in his first season.

Vincent Lecavalier is reportedly close to agreeing to a long-term deal with the Lightning, according to TSN.ca. The 28-year old Lecavalier is entering the final season of a four-year, $27.5 million contract where he will earn $7.167 million.

Our View:Lecavalier scored 40 goals and 52 assists with the Lightning in 2007-08, and holds franchise records in goals (273), points (602), and games played (710).
