SD: Edmonds released
Jim Edmonds (CF)5/9: Jim Edmonds has been released by the Padres, according to the AP. The team recalled outfielder Jody Gerut from Triple-A Portland to cover the open spot on the roster. Our View: This was to be expected, as Edmonds only hit .178 over 90 at-bats this season, with 24 strikeouts. He only recorded one home run as well.
TOR: Santos designated for assignment
Sergio Santos (SS)5/9: Infielder Sergio Santos has been designated for assignment, according to MLB.com. The team acquired outfielders Brad Wilkerson and Kevin Mench, and Santos was moved to free up roster space. Our View: Santos did not register any at-bats this season, and held no fantasy value prior to today's move.
TOR: Chacin designated for assignment
Gustavo Chacin (P)5/9: Gustavo Chacin has been designated for assignment, according to MLB.com. The team needed to make room on the roster for new outfielders Brad Wilkerson and Kevin Mench. Our View: Chacin did not register an appearance with Toronto in 2008, and held no fantasy value prior to his designation.
TOR: Inglett optioned to Triple-A
Joe Inglett (3B)5/9: Joe Inglett has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, according to MLB.com. The team needed to free up a roster spot for newly acquired outfielders Brad Wilkerson and Kevin Mench. Our View: Inglett fared well in limited action this season, as he hit .303 with four RBI over 33 at-bats. He also registered two stolen bases. He will have to wait for another shot to prove his worth with Toronto.
TOR: Mench lands in Toronto
Kevin Mench (OF)5/9: Kevin Mench has landed in Toronto, according to Fox Sports. He was acquired for cash from the Texas Rangers.
Our View: Mench, who was with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma, hit .267 with eight homers and 37 RBI in 2007 while a member of the Brewers. He is a liability defensively, but will provide the Jays with an extra bat off the bench.
TOR: Blue Jays acquire Wilkerson
Brad Wilkerson (RF)5/9: Brad Wilkerson has been acquired by the Blue Jays, according to Fox Sports. He was recently cut by the Mariners. Our View: Wilkerson was brought in as he is good against left-handed pitching, and the Jays are going to face three lefties in their current series against Cleveland. He will also provide them with flexibility to use him at first base, or in the outfield.
ATL: McCann has good record vs. Snell
Brian McCann (C)5/9: Brian McCann has a good track record against Ian Snell, tonight's opposing hurler for Pittsburgh, according to MLB.com. McCann is 7-for-12 with three homers over his career versus Snell. Our View: McCann is hitting .299 this season, with one homer and 17 RBI. He already has eight hits and five RBI over five games in May, and shouldn't cool off against the Pirates tonight.
ATL: Glavine shooting for first win
Tom Glavine (P)5/9: Tom Glavine will be shooting for his first win of the season when he takes the mound against the Pirates tonight, according to MLB.com. Glavine is 0-1 over five starts, with a 4.50 ERA and 1.73 WHIP. Our View: Glavine is 22-12 with a 3.12 ERA against the Pirates in his career. Glavine was rocked for six runs in his last start (against Cincinnati) but has only allowed five earned runs in his four previous starts. He is pitching well overall, despite not having any wins, and he is worth starting tonight.
OAK: Foulke activated
Keith Foulke (P)5/9: Keith Foulke has been activated from the 15-day DL, according to the Sports Network. He has recovered from neck stiffness. Our View: Foulke registered six strikeouts over seven innings this season, with five hits and two runs allowed. The 35-year old reliever will help the Athletics' bullpen, but holds little fantasy value.
CLE: Sabathia looking for second win
C.C. Sabathia (P)5/9: C.C. Sabathia will be looking for his second win of the season when the Indians host the Blue Jays tonight, according to MLB.com. The former Cy Young Award winner is 1-5 with a 7.51 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 38.1 innings, with 18 walks and 37 strikeouts. He has already allowed six home runs. Our View: Sabathia has allowed nine runs in two of his seven starts this season, but has only allowed a total of five runs (and four walks) over his last three outings.

GB: K-Rob to be released?
Koren Robinson (WR)5/9: A league source has reported that the Packers plan to release Koren Robinson, according to ProFootballTalk. The move can happen as soon as today. The Packers initially gave him time to line up a trade, but teams are just going to wait for him to be cut. Our View: The Packers want to go younger at the position, and the drafting of Jordy Nelson (Kansas State) made K-Rob expendable. Robinson has a bone-on-bone knee problem that likely isn't going to go away, which will hurt his stock when he is cut.
HOU: Schaub will participate fully
Matt Schaub (QB)5/9: Matt Schaub, who is recovering from surgery on his left shoulder, will participate fully during minicamp, according to the Houston Chronicle. Coach Gary Kubiak said he will be able to do everything in their weekend minicamp.
Our View: His rehab is going favorably. Schaub fired nine touchdown passes over 11 games last season, and the Texans' success in 2008 will depend on his recovery.
DET: Rogers could land in the CFL
Charles Rogers (WR)5/9: Another once highly prized NFL receiver appears headed to the CFL looking to put problems both on and off the field behind him. Just weeks after the Toronto Argonauts signed former first-round NFL pick David Boston, the Montreal Alouettes are close to a deal with Charles Rogers, the second overall pick of the 2003 NFL draft, according to the Toronto Globe & Mail. "I would say there's about an 80-20 chance of him being at training camp, coming in and competing for a job," Montreal general manager Jim Popp said yesterday. Our View: The Detroit Lions signed Rogers to a six-year, $55 million contract, including $14 million in guaranteed money. In 15 games over three NFL seasons with Detroit, Rogers caught 36 passes for 440 yards and four touchdowns, while becoming one of the biggest busts in recent NFL history.
MIA: McCown excited about QB competition
Josh McCown (QB)5/9: Josh McCown is excited about competing for the starting quarterback job in Miami this season, according to the Palm Beach Post. McCown said, "As long as the guys in the building tell me it's an open competition, I could care less what fans or media say. At the end of the day, from what I've been told and am experiencing at the facility, it's a three-man race. I have a lot of experience to help me. But it also will help the whole group. I want to play and be the starter, but if someone ends up in front of me, then he'll be pretty good. This is the last chance I'll get to compete like this."
Our View: McCown threw 10 touchdown passes and 11 inteceptions over nine games with Oakland in 2007. He will compete with John Beck and rookie Chad Henne for the starting job. He will benefit from a fresh start in Miami, but isn't likely to make a big impact if he wins the starting gig.
CLE: Davis, Williams to compete for job
Andra Davis (LB)5/9: Heading into next week's opening of spring practice, it appears D'Qwell Jackson is locked in at one starting inside linebacker job, with veteran Andra Davis and third-year player Leon Williams sharing the other spot, according to the Canton Repository. Our View: This report makes it sound like Jackson is the only Cleveland inside linebacker to target in IDP leagues. Davis and Williams will battle in training camp, but they shared time last year, and it appears the rotation could be in full effect again in 2008. It remains to be seen how rookie, Beau Bell, will be mixed in on the inside. General manager Phil Savage has made it clear Bell has a chance to be on the field as a rookie, and not just on special teams. Bell’s deficiencies in pass coverage were exposed during the Browns recent rookie mini-camp, but coaches aren't overly concerned, because it was understood when Bell was drafted in Round 4 that he might be limited to playing on running downs.
NYG: Shockey not likely to be traded
Jeremy Shockey (TE)5/9: Newsday NFL writer Bob Glauber reported on ESPN this morning that the only way the New York Giants would trade tight end Jeremy Shockey is if they received an offer that “knocked their socks off”. Our View: Glauber said the organization originally wanted in excess of a second rounder for Shockey, and now that the draft has concluded, the price would probably rise. Reading between the lines it sounds like the Giants want a second round pick and a player or a first round pick, which at this stage of the offseason appears unlikely. The New Orleans Saints continue to be the only team interested in Shockey.
NYG: Strahan wants a substantial raise?
Michael Strahan (DE)5/9: Newsday NFL writer Bob Glauber reported on ESPN this morning that defensive lineman Michael Strahan is leaning towards retirement. But the 15-year veteran could be coaxed into playing if the New York Giants gave him a $3 million raise, or the equivalent of $7 million for the 2008 season. Our View: Previous reports (during the offseason) made it sound like the organization was receptive to giving Strahan more money, though no mention was made if they were willing to almost double his salary. Stay tuned.
BAL: Ogden expected to skip mini-camp
Jonathan Ogden (T)5/9: Left tackle Jonathan Ogden is not expected to attend the Baltimore Ravens’ mandatory minicamp, which runs over the next three days, according to the Baltimore Sun. Our View: Ogden, 33, is a 12-year veteran who advised the organization earlier in the offseason to proceed with their plans as if he was retiring, though he has not made a final decision yet.
BAL: Washington impressive in mini-camp
Fabian Washington (DB)5/9: Cornerback Fabian Washington stood out during last week’s Baltimore Ravens’ mini-camp because of his competitiveness in drills, according to the Baltimore Sun. Our View: Washington joins the Ravens as a nickel back, but the club will let him compete with Samari Rolle for a starting job. Rolle was limited to a career-low six games last season because of epilepsy and a shoulder injury.
KC: KC has three-headed kicker competition
Billy Cundiff (K)5/9: The Kansas City Chiefs will be evaluating three place kickers during the offseason including journeymen Nick Novak, Billy Cundiff and free agent rookie Connor Barth, according to the Kansas City Star. “We’ll have to decide at the end of the day if one of these three guys is the guy or do we have to go out and get one of those old guys who doesn’t want to come to training camp?” coach Herm Edwards said. “Hopefully we don’t have to do that, but if we have to, we’ll do it.” Our View: Novak and Cundiff are already kicking during informal workouts. Barth will join them when offseason practice begins in two weeks. The “old guys” Edwards referred to include John Carney, who kicked for the Chiefs toward the end of last season, and former Indianapolis kicker Mike Vanderjagt, who worked out for them early in the spring. Both are free agents.

WAS: Mason Jr. expects to move
Roger Mason Jr (G)5/9: The Wizards expect free agent guard Roger Mason Jr to sign elsewhere when he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, the Washington Post reports. Our View: The Wizards need to concentrate on bringing back Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison. Mason will probably be able to find more money and a sixth or seventh-man role somewhere. He seems to have found a nice niche as a hot-shooting chucker off the bench.
MIA: Wright rehab going well
Dorell Wright (F)5/9: Dorell Wright is making good progress as he recovers from early March surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, the Miami Herald reports. The 22-year-old swingman is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, but signs point to him returning to Miami. Wright remains roughly a month away from returning to basketball activities. Our View: Wright was just starting to step into a bigger role when he injured his knee on March 2. Shawn Marion and Dwyane Wade will be the Heat's leaders in 2008-09, but there's a sizable void behind those stars. There's a spot for Wright to step into a No. 3-like role if he can get healthy and progress as hoped.
WAS: Thomas to be ready for 2008-09
Etan Thomas (C)5/9: President Ernie Grunfeld confirmed on Thursday that Etan Thomas will be at full speed by the start of next training camp, the Washington Post reports. The big man missed the entire 2007-08 season after undergoing open-heart surgery to repair a cardiac irregularity. Our View: Thomas isn't much of a fantasy factor, but he's a good banger and shot blocker who can backup Brendan Haywood.
NJ: Vandeweghe promoted to GM
Vince Carter (G)5/9: The Nets have promoted Kiki Vandeweghe from special assistant to general manager. "We've still got a lot of work to do, which I'm excited about. I'm looking forward to getting right at it," Vandeweghe tells the New York Post. He received a two-year deal worth roughly $3 million. Our View: The Nets have some nice pieces in Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson, Devin Harris, and Nenad Krstic. Their future seems to rest on if young players like Josh Boone, Marcus Williams, Sean Williams, and Maurice Ager can turn into productive parts of the rotation. Coincidentally, Vandeweghe helped the Nets build that young group, as the former Nuggets GM once traded the franchise three first-round picks for Kenyon Martin.
DET: Billups remains questionable
Chauncey Billups (G)5/9: Chauncey Billups is feeling better today, according to the D etroit News. Billups said, "I am feeling a little better today, but it's still tough to say whether I will be ready to play in Game 4 Saturday. It's a soft tissue injury and it's tough. It's very restrictive. Even when I just try to walk fast, it's restrictive. I have to be careful." Pistons' physical therapist Arnie Kander said, "The fact that he has improved this quickly is a great sign. Usually Day 2 after you irritate a muscle feels terrible. That fact that he is walking normally is really positive."
Our View: Billups added that he might shoot some Friday, but he wouldn't full-out test the leg until Saturday morning. He is really needed for pivotal Game 4 in Orlando, as Detroit holds a 2-1 lead in the series.
BOS: Garnett records double-double in win
Kevin Garnett (F)5/9: Kevin Garnett recorded a double-double in Thursday's 89-73 win over Cleveland in Game 2. Garnett scored 13 points and 12 boards, with four assists, one steal, and one block. Our View: That was his fifth double-double of the playoffs. He helped guide the Celtics to a 2-0 lead in the series against the Cavs.
NO: West has double-double in loss
David West (F)5/8: David West scored 23 points and added 12 boards and three blocks but it wasn't enough as the Hornets fell to the Spurs 110-99 in Game 3. Our View: This was West's second straight double-double against the Spurs and he has averaged 21 points a game over the three contests. He will likely continue to work against Tim Duncan at times, a tough matchup for the Hornets best inside presence.
SA: Duncan solid in win
Tim Duncan (C)5/8: Tim Duncan took only 13 shots in Game 3 but he made six of them on his way to a 16 point, 13 rebound, four block shot night. Our View: Duncan played a game-high 43 minutes in his second solid outing after possibly his worst playoff performance of his storied career. He will need to be even better in Game 4 if the Spurs hope to even up the series.
SA: Ginobili leads in win
Manu Ginobili (G)5/8: Manu Ginobili scored 31 points for the Spurs in their 110-99 victory over the Hornets in Game 3. Ginobili made three 3-pointers on the night and was 11-for-22 from the field. Our View: This was only the second time in these playoffs that Ginobili went for 25 in a game and it was a welcomed change since he had been held to an average of 12.5 points per game over the last four.
SA: Parker goes for 31 in win
Tony Parker (G)5/8: Tony Parker may not have been able to stop Chris Paul from scoring but he did his best to keep up as he hit 12 of 24 shots on his way to 31 points (Paul had 35). Our View: Parker did out assist the MVP candidate 11 to nine in over 40 minutes of action. Parker has now gone for 30 points in four of the last seven playoff games as he is once again proving why he is considered such a clutch performer.

COL: Quenneville fired
Peter Forsberg (C)5/9: Joel Quenneville has been fired by the Avalanche, according to the AP. GM Francois Giguere said, "After meeting with Joel, we mutually agreed that the best decision for both parties involved is to go separate ways. On behalf of the organization, I want to thank Joel for his years of service and wish him the best in his coaching career."
Our View: He coached the Avalanche to a 44-31-7 regular-season record and a berth in the Western Conference playoffs this year.
EDM: Pisani eying Masterson award
Fernando Pisani (W)5/9: Fernando Pisani is a finalist for the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, the AP reports. The award honors the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication. Pisani bounced back after missing the first 26 games of the season due to ulcerative colitis. Our View: Nothing against Pisani, but we'll take the guy who fought through cancer (Jason Blake) or the warrior who logged his 24th season (Chris Chelios) over the dude with colitis.
TOR: Blake finalist for Masterson Trophy
Jason Blake (W)5/9: Jason Blake is a finalist for the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, the AP reports. The award honors the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication. Blake was diagnosed in October with chronic myelogenous leukemia but still played in all 82 games. Our View: Blake disappointed fantasy owners because he lost his goal-scoring touch this past season, but it's awfully tough to be hard on the guy. We expect him to have a better year in 2008-09.
DET: Chelios up for Masterson Trophy
Chris Chelios (D)5/9: Chris Chelios is a finalist for the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, the AP reports. The award honors the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication. Our View: If 24 seasons of NHL don't scream perseverance and dedication, we don't know what does.
DAL: Barnes ready to return for Game 2?
Stu Barnes (C)5/9: Stu Barnes said he may be ready to return for Game 2 against Detroit, according to the Dallas Morning News. He has missed four straight games due to concussion-like symptoms sustained back in Game 3 against the Sharks. Our View: He has been experiencing dizziness when he works out, but feels better every day. This is an important game for Dallas as they trail 1-0, and the team will make sure he is ready before putting him back on the ice.
DAL: Boucher expected to return in series
Philippe Boucher (D)5/9: Philippe Boucher missed his 10th straight playoff game on Thursday, but is expected to return to action at some point during the series with Detroit, according to the Dallas Morning News. He has been slowed by a hip strain, but was able to skate for the first time on Monday. Our View: The Stars' enforcer racked up 14 points over 38 games in the regular season, and his toughness will be much needed against Detroit. Dallas currently trails 1-0 in the series.
DET: Maltby returned to action
Kirk Maltby (W)5/9: Kirk Maltby returned to the ice for the first time in over a month on Thursday, according to the Detroit News. He has been out nursing a hamstring injury. He replaced Darren McCarty. Our View: Maltby is a good penalty killer, and a high-energy player. He only scored 10 points over 61 games in the regular season, but the Red Wings are pleased to have him back.
DET: McCarty was healthy scratch Thurs.
Darren McCarty (W)5/9: Darren McCarty was a healthy scratch for Thursday's game against Dallas, according to the Detroit News. He was replaced by Kirk Maltby and Coach Mike Babcock said, "It was a tough decision. Mac's played real good. Maltby's a good penalty killer and plays with tempo. This series will be faster and faster."
Our View: McCarty only has one point (a goal) over 10 playoff games.
WAS: Kolzig won't return to Caps?
Olaf Kolzig (G)5/9: Olaf Kolzig has confirmed that he has played his last game for the Capitals, according to FanNation. He also said he would like to return for a 17th NHL campaign. Our View: The franchise drafted him back in 1989. Kolzig went 25-21-6 in 2007, with a .892 save percentage. He only had one shutout, but can still hold his own between the pipes.
DET: Filppula battles injury and scores goal
Valtteri Filppula (C)5/9: Valtteri Filppula battled his leg injury and contributed a goal in Thursday's 4-1 win over Dallas in Game 1. Our View: He has racked up five points over his last five playoff games, and has emerged as an unlikely source of production in the playoffs for Detroit, as he only scored 36 points over 78 games in the regular season.
