Steelers release Najeh Davenport Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers released running
back Najeh Davenport Saturday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Davenport rushed for 499 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games last season,
but was deemed expendable after the Steelers inked free agent running back
Mewelde Moore and used their first pick in this year's draft to select running
back Rashard Mendenhall.
The 29-year-old University of Miami-Florida product spent his first four NFL
seasons with the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Steelers in 2006.
Najeh Davenport may be a fit with the Detroit Lions because of his experience in the league and the fact he has kickoff return experience, according to Pro Football Weekly.
Our View:Davenport had a nice season with Pittsburgh last season, but he would be in competition with a lot of bodies in Detroit, minimizing his fantasy value.
Mewelde Moore has been impressive for the Steelers thus far, and he could be a real offensive weapon as a third-down back, according to Pro Football Weekly.
Our View:The report suggests Moore could snare as many as 40 or 50 passes out of the backfield. If that is the case, he has fantasy value in PPR leagues, but otherwise he is behind Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall, and won't get many carries.
The Arizona Cardinals are not interested in free agent running back Najeh Davenport, according to the Arizona Republic. Davenport had earlier stated his desire to play for the Cardinals or Detroit Lions.
Our View:Davenport should be able to find a home somewhere as a back-up. He had a nice season in that role for the Steelers, but was made expendable when the team drafted Rashard Mendenhall.
