It appears Curtis Martin's career will officially come to an end, a year after it became clear the NFL legend was unlikely to ever take the field again. According to a report in the New York Post, Martin will officially announce his retirement at a press conference within the next two days.

Curtis Martin hasn't given up hope of returning to the NFL this coming season. "He's talking about trying to come back," one source told the New York Daily News. Martin probably won't make a decision until training camp nears in late July. He's worn down the cartilage in his knee to the point that it's just bone on bone, so the odds of him playing again are slim, at best. The Jets brought in Thomas Jones during the offseason, so they are set to move on without Martin.

The Jets will get $9.15 million in cap relief if Curtis Martin retires as expected, according to the AP. Martin has been ruled out for this season and it's considered very remote that he'll ever play again, given the absence of cartilage in his knee.

The AP reports that the Jets placed Curtis Martin on the reserved physically-unable-to perform list, ending any chance that he could play this season. "I think his heart was saying one thing and unfortunately, the injury was saying something else," head coach Eric Mangini said. Mangini said the door would be left open for Martin to try to play in 2007, but that seems unlikely to happen.

The New York Daily News cites a source close to Curtis Martin, who said the veteran running back has given up his attempted comeback for this season. "He's not coming back," said the source. A public announcement should be made today. Martin almost certainly is done playing pro football.
