Running back Jacob Hester rushed 12 times for 59 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the Rams.

Our View:It was a second straight decent showing for Hester, who is aiming to fill Michael Turner's old shoes. Hester is strictly handcuff material in fantasy leagues.

As the Chargers look to solidify their roster for the coming season, rookie fullback-in-training-for-tailback Jacob Hester is making a strong case to join the squad as the team's secondary rusher, according to the Associated Press. Hester ran for two touchdowns and the Chargers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 31-17 Saturday night in the first preseason game for each team. San Diego’s third-round draft pick out of LSU, Hester scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards. He gained 49 yards on 13 carries.

Our View:Hester is competing with Darren Sproles to replace Michael Turner as the backup for two-time defending NFL rushing champ LaDainian Tomlinson. Sproles gained 7 yards on five carries and had a 5-yard touchdown run, one of three first-half rushing TDs for San Diego.

The Chargers appear to be rather enamored with their latest addition, passing along words of praise tagged with hopes of offensive pertinence for fullback Jacob Hester , the team's 3rd-round draft pick from this year's NFL Draft, according to Chargers.com.

Our View:During the first two days of training camp, Hester has served as the primary ball carrier during team drills but will likely be asked to play fullback, contribute on special teams and have a unique role in the passing game. His performance in camp thus far has coach Norve Turner describing Hester as a “natural runner” who will have plenty of chances to make plays with the ball in his hands, regardless of whatever may be asked of him. Turner has suggested that Hester could easily fit into the role vacated by Michael Turner, spelling LaDainian Tomlinson as a change-of-pace rushing option, and while Darren Sproles is still looking like the favorite to serve as RB2 on the depth chart, it now appears Hester is making a move to earn consideration for that job.

Jacob Hester, the Chargers third-round pick in the NFL draft, has signed a four-year contract that includes a signing bonus of $833,000, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:Hester will back up LaDainian Tomlinson, play fullback, and may even line up in the slot at receiver for San Diego. Still, his fantasy value is not very high as the Chargers possess so many other playmakers.

The Chargers added LSU fullback/running back Jacob Hester in the mid-rounds of his this year's NFL Draft, but it now appears the Bolts see bigger and better things for the rookie rusher, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:We have reported Hester is getting reps playing both fullback and running back in team practices, indicating the team will be utilizing him for more than his blocking skills. Now PFW reports the team is also giving him a look as a slot receiver, believing Hester has the hands to make receptions in traffic and the bulk to gain yards after the catch. It sounds like coach Norv Turner may be looking to turn Hester into a wild-card option that could prove beneficial for the team and fantasy owners. Keep an eye on this situation when training camp gets started. If the team continues to get Hester involved as a receiver, tight end Antonio Gates may be finding competition for short-range catches.
