Brad Cottam will head to the injured reserve with a cracked bone in his vertebra, according to the Kansas City Star's Kent Babb.

Our View:Cottam had a chance to develop into a decent threat at tight end this season following the departure of Tony Gonzalez but never took advantage. He shouldn't receive any attention from fantasy owners next year.

Chiefs' head coach Todd Haley stated that the competition for the starting role at tight end is wide open, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:Brad Cottam was considered the favorite to start at tight end, but has gravely struggled so far in offseason workouts, namely dropping catching passes. Sean Ryan and Tony Curtis are now in the race to win the starting job, and rookie Jake O'Connell should get a fair chance to compete as well.

Chiefs' head coach Todd Haley indicated that Brad Cottam has to earn the starting gig at tight end, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:Cottam is expected to hold the top job, but rookie Jake O'Connell and Tom Crabtree look to get a fair shot to compete. Cottam has solid hands and is a polished route-runner, so he would be worth a look as a flier for deeper leagues as a starter in Kansas City.

The Chiefs are depending on Brad Cottam to fill the void left by Tony Gonzalez's departure to Atlanta, according to the Kansas City Star. Cottam realizes he won't be a worthy replacement for the elite Gonzalez and he said, "I already know I am not going to have 100 catches like Tony would get every season. I am a completely different player than he is. I would like to think I will be able to take some things from his game. But I am not going to worry about trying to keep up with everything he was able to do."

Our View:Cottam has skills to be a strong run blocker, but only caught 21 passes over four years at Tennessee, and has a poor track record with durability. He does have good hands and is a solid route runner however, and will be worth a look as a late-round flier for deeper fantasy leagues.

Third-round pick tight end Brad Cottam and the Chiefs have agreed on a three-year contract, according to KCchiefs.com. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Our View:Cottam will compete for playing time behind veteran Tony Gonzalez.
