Bears offensive tackle Chris Williams, the team's first-round draft pick, made his season debut against Green Bay in the fourth quarter, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:The paper reports that it was not a great start, and on Williams' first snap, Aaron Kampman went right by him, with only a good move by Rex Grossman saving a sack.

Because of how well the Bears' offensive line is playing, it does not seem likely that first-round pick Chris Williams will be seeing much action soon, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:John St. Clair is the left tackle, and John Tait mans the far outside post on the right. Neither are so talented that Williams won't eventually see time, but for now, the Bears will hold steady.

Chris Williams is expected to see action with Chicago before their bye in Week 8, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. GM Jerry Angelo stated that he could play at any time and he added, "His progress has been very good. Right now our situation with Chris is he missed all of training camp. He's practicing and we keep graduating him each and every week, really it's the last two weeks he's doing more and more. So everything looks good."

Our View:He was projected to start at left tackle this season prior to sustaining a back ailment, which resulted in surgery to repair a herniated disc. The Bears remaining opponents before the bye are the Falcons and Vikings.

First-round pick Chris Williams participated fully in practice Friday for the first time since having surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "It's real encouraging," Williams said. "I'm ready to play, know what I mean?"

Our View:Williams won't play on Sunday, but the team is hopeful that he'll be back before the end of the month.

Chris Williams is practicing in full pads today, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He is recovering from surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back.

Our View:He is practicing on a limited basis. The team is yet to set a timetable for his return to the gridiron, but GM Jerry Angelo believes he will be back before November.

Top rookie selection tackle Chris Williams unloaded a rather large surprise on the press this morning, announcing he had a herniated disc when the Bears drafted him with the 14th overall pick in April, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Our View:According to Williams, everyone knew and that's why the worst kept secret going, that Williams did not have a pre-existing back condition, was debunked by scouts who spoke to the Sun-Times the day after he had surgery to correct the problem on August 6th. The organization was adamant that Williams was not damaged goods when he was drafted and that the injury was a new one. For two weeks, the company line in camp was that he was suffering from back spasms. It took a while to get to the root of the problem. The Bears have been embarrassed to the point that they have been doing spin control since and worked over every house organ they could find. Williams also disputed a published report that he injured his back this summer in preparing for training camp.

Bears first-round draft pick, tackle Chris Williams, has made it known that he wants to play this season despite the fact he had surgery on a herniated disc, according to ChicagoBears.com. “I’d like to play at least half the season," he said.

Our View:The team was counting on Williams to be a big part of his team's offense, but that plan was clearly put on hold. Williams' timetable for a return is unknown. He could be out just a part of the season, or he could be out for the entire year.
August 13, 2008
Bears GM Jerry Angelo might not agree, but John Clayton is reporting rookie tackle Chris Williams is, for all intents and purposes, done for the season, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:The surgery recently completed to repair a herniated disc in Williams' back is not an easy recovery, and it seems difficult to believe the Bears won't view the investment as one to protect rather than push. Clayton notes it's likely the Bears will keep him on the roster like they did with Rex Grossman a couple of years ago, with the hope he could be available in late November or December. Still, the chances of him doing anything for the team this year are not good.

Chris Williams underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back, but team GM Jerry Angelo does not believe the rookie offensive tackle is in jeopardy of missing the entire season, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Angelo said, "Well, you know the good news is we'll get him back in the season, at some point during the season. We have to wait and see probably for a few weeks and see how the rehab is. We were hoping it was muscular, meaning it was spasms. When they gave him another look they determined it was a herniated disc and so, but the good news is we're going to get him back."

Our View:John Tait may now be forced to start at left tackle heading into Week 1, where he is less effective. Williams' absence will not bode well for the Bears' passing game.

Bears first-round pick, offensive tackle Chris Williams, underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back, and it is possible he could be out for the entire season, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:This explains why the Bears are trying to acquire Fred Miller, and it would be a big blow to a Bears team whose offensive line is shaky, at best.
July 28, 2008
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Chris Williams is still out due to soreness in his lower back. Coach Lovie Smith said, "Chris is getting better, and we need to get him out there."

Our View:The Bears do not believe the injury is serious, but do not have a timetable as to when he will return to the practice field.
July 26, 2008
Continuing to follow a story originating yesterday, Chicago's 1st-round draft pick, tackle Chris Williams , was once again held out of team practices at training camp today due to a stiff back, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Our View:The Bears report Williams is likely to be out until late next week but do not believe the injury is serious. The offensive tackle was injured halfway through the second practice of training camp on Thursday. He skipped Friday's fully padded session and was a bystander Saturday morning. He's expected to skip the evening practice at Ward Field also. Williams was moving around slowly. No one has put a timetable on things for a return but the more days he misses the more difficult it will be for him to unseat veteran John St. Clair. Williams needs practice time that will lead to significant playing time in preseason games. The Bears could also consider switching it up and moving John Tait back to the left side and slotting St. Clair at right tackle. That could spark a game of musical chairs though because if and when Williams is ready to play, he'll need to be at left tackle.
July 24, 2008
First-round pick Chris Williams, who signed with the Bears on Wednesday, has left Thursday's practice with a stiff back, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He left the field during a one-on-one pass rushing drill. Coach Lovie Smith commented, "We'll always err in favor of the players, but it was to the point where he couldn't practice. When I say there is some stiffness, I don't know exactly how much, but he couldn't practice. The guys know there's a difference between pain and injury. It seems like his was more of an injury."

Our View:Williams is expected to play a key factor in the Bears' offense this season, as he is slated to start at left tackle, allowing John Tait to man the right side, where he is best suited. We will keep you posted regarding the severity of Williams' ailment.
July 23, 2008
The Bears have inked first-round pick Chris Williams (Vanderbilt) to a five-year deal, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The deal has a base value of $13 million and can top out at more than $15 million if he meets various triggers.

Our View:He signed before camp, so he has a strong chance to start on the left side at tackle immediately as a rookie. That would allow John Tait to cover the right side, which he is best suited for.
July 18, 2008
The Bears are close to signing their first-round pick, offensive tackle Chris Williams, according to the Chicago Tribune. His agent, Bill Johnson, stated, " We have exchanged dialogue and proposals. I respect the Bears' diligence in working toward a timely resolution, particularly with training camp right around the corner." He is expected to sign a five-year contract, with $9 million guaranteed.

Our View:This would be a key signing before the club heads into training camp. Williams will be needed to fill a void on the offensive line at left tackle, which would allow John Tait to cover the right side, which he is best suited for.
April 26, 2008
The Chicago Bears selected Vanderbilt offensive tackle Chris Williams with the 13th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View:The Bears have plenty of holes to fill, with none more important than the offensive line. Williams could start at left tackle from day one, which would allow John Tait to move to his more natural position at right tackle.
