Tackle Jake Long (ankle) is listed as probable for this Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams, according to NFL.com.

Our View:It will be a matchup of the top two picks as he will square off against defensive end Chris Long of the Rams. Finally, the Rams can look forward to watching an interesting battle on Sunday.

Jake Long practiced on Thursday according to the Palm Beach Post. He should be ready to play on Sunday at St. Louis. He's been bothered by a bad ankle.

Our View:Long's presence would help the Dolphins' strong running game. The Rams have one of the worst running defenses in the league and the Dolphins should be able to have their way with them on Sunday.
November 26, 2008
Dolphins left tackle Jake Long is questionable for the team's game this Sunday against the Rams due to an ankle injury, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View:Even if Long does not play, it shouldn't hurt the fantasy status of any of the team's players. If Long does play, he will square off all day against No. 2 overall pick Chris Long.

Updating an earlier report, Jake Long left Sunday's game with an ankle injury but returned with seven minutes left in the contest, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

Our View:This is obviously good news for the Miami offense.

Offensive tackle Jake Long left Sunday's game with an ankle injury during the third quarter and was taken to the locker room to be evaluated, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Our View:There is no word on the severity of the injury.

In an intriguing story from the NFL, reports from this year's Rookie Symposium have two unnamed players getting into a fight during the league-mandated conference, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:Talk notes the source indicates the league had hoped to keep the story quiet, but that has not happened. The names of the players have not been released, but Talk knows one of those players was a 1st-round draft pick. When we learn more, we'll pass it along (and we'll see if commissioner Roger Goodell hands out any fines or suspensions as a result).

Sources in Miami tell Pro Football Weekly rookie Jake Long is every bit the physical specimen he’s been billed as, but he clearly has a long way to go before becoming an upper-crust offensive lineman. Through minicamp, Long, the first overall pick in the draft, has shown glimpses of dominance as a run blocker but has struggled to hold speed rushers at bay in pass protection.

Our View:Long, who is slated to start at left tackle, will be a key component in the success or failure of the Dolphins offense. It’s still early in the process, and not uncommon for rookie offensive linemen to struggle in pass protection due to the speed of the edge pass rushers at the professional level. We will continue to track his progress going forward and especially in training camp.

The Miami Dolphins are not only confident rookie Jake Long will improve one of the most vital positions on the field (left tackle), but they also believe Long will improve the entire line, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:The move to add Long allows Vernon Carey to switch back to his position of comfort at right tackle, and early reports indicate the entire line is starting to gel much quicker than anticipated as a result.

Bill Parcells, the vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins, had set an internal deadline of Tuesday to get the deal done with tackle Jake Long, or he would have turned to his attention to Virginia defensive end Chris Long, according to ESPN.

Our View:It never came to that because Parcells instructed his negotiators to begin the negotiating process with Jake Long on April 7, after the organization finalized their draft board with the Michigan tackle at the top.

Jake Long has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Dolphins and will go number one in the NFL Draft this weekend, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:The offensive line is the biggest area of need for the Dolphins, and Long will help to solidify the left side at tackle. He is a safe pick for number one.
April 22, 2008
Sources close to offensive tackle Jake Long say it's premature to say a deal with the Miami Dolphins is in place or close, according to ESPN.

Our View:The next two days are important because the complicated language of a huge contract sometimes takes time to complete. The Dolphins are reportedly trying to get Long signed to a contract for less than the six-year, $61 million deal signed by JaMarcus Russell last season.

The Miami Dolphins flirtation with Michigan tackle Jake Long over the past few weeks has been well-publicized, but this morning with six days to go before the draft, a league source is indicating that a contract agreement is nearly in place, according to NBC Sports.

Our View:If this deal gets finalized it would be a step in the right direction of repairing an offensive line that has allowed 83 sacks over the past two seasons. Additionally, St. Louis is expected to select defensive end Chris Long, if this rumor turns into reality.

In an attempt to update an ongoing story that is now turning from annual ritual to potential debacle, the Miami Dolphins, said to be discussing contractual terms with University of Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long , are reportedly offering a contract described as low, and the report goes on to suggest the Fins are actually shopping contracts to three potential picks with the intent of using the 1st-overall pick of this year's NFL Draft on the player that accepts the lowest number, according to Scout.com.

Our View:Rob Rang of Scout.com reports that an unnamed source has called the initial offer to Long "low," but also notes sources inside the Fins' organization are claiming the team is torn between three potential players to pick, adding defensive ends Vernon Gholston and Chris Long to the debate. The report states the Fins have offered Jake Long a deal that is $10-15 million less than the 1st-overall pick of 2007 (Oakland QB JaMarcus Russell) was signed for. Rang reports the team intends to offer the same deal to Gholston and Chris Long, and the team is likely to draft the player that agrees to the deal (assuming one does). However, Range notes these are best described as "rumors" and the Fins have yet to enter negotiations with Gholston or Chris Long, thus it is hard to determine if these assertions are in fact true. Stay tuned.

There is word circulating that offensive tackle Jake Long doesn't want to play for the Dolphins, according to FoxSports.com. The team holds the top pick, and continues to negotiate with him.

Our View:Defensive lineman Chris Long would be the next highest rated player, but Miami reportedly isn't interested in him if they don't get Jake Long.
April 14, 2008
Jake Long reportedly has a deadline to sign a deal from the Dolphins, which would make him the first pick of the draft, according to SI.com.

Our View:Long would be a great pick at number one for Miami, as he would help strengthen a weak offensive line.
April 13, 2008
The St. Louis Rams, possessing the 2nd-overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, are hosting visits with four of this year’s top prospects this weekend, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. University of Virginia DE Chris Long, Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston, LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, and University of Michigan OT Jake Long are all in town visiting the Gateway to the West and are the apparent targets of this team.

Our View:The Rams have more than a few glaring needs and any one of these players would be a welcome addition to the squad. Expect news of potential contract negotiations to follow in the coming days.
April 9, 2008
The agents for former University of Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long were seen in Miami on Tuesday entering the Dolphins’ training complex and are in the midst of preliminary contract negotiations, according to NFL.com. The Fins possess the first overall pick in the NFL Draft and much has been made of their potential move at that spot. Having Bill Parcells on hand and making those decisions, it is difficult to determine exactly what they will do, but this report seems to indicate the Fins may have their man caught in the sights and are looking to get the pick solidified now. However, NFL.com’s Adam Schefter reports the Fins are also interested in meeting with the agents of defensive end Chris Long and defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, so don’t jump to quick conclusions just yet.

Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long is believed to be the top target on the Kansas City Chiefs’ draft board, but assuming he’s gone, the organization will work the phones to try to move down, according to Pro Football Weekly. “I think they’ll want to go about 5-to-7 spots down,” a source close to the team told PFW. “That way, they still should be able to take Boise State offensive tackle Ryan Clady or Pittsburgh offensive tackle Jeff Otah to help their line.” It’s no secret that Kansas City needs a stellar draft class to have a fighter’s chance of making a playoff run in 2008. Coach Herm Edwards’ recent assertion that he hopes between 50-75 percent of his draftees earn starting roles only highlights that need. So, in a somewhat perverse line of logic, the organization could opt for quantity over quality in the draft.

Just because offensive lineman Robert Gallery failed to develop into the Pro Bowl player the Oakland Raiders hoped he would, doesn’t mean the organization would hesitate to pick another offensive lineman at the top of the draft, according to NFL.com. The Raiders are planning to bring Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long to Oakland early next week for a visit with team officials. Long, 6-7 and 315 pounds, is widely considered the top offensive lineman in the 2008 NFL draft. Despite this visit, the rumor mill continues to have the Raiders' selecting running back Darren McFadden in the four hole.
