Vernon Gholston hasn't seen much playing time and is still looking for his first sack this year, according to the NY Daily News. Coach Eric Mangini isn't worried about the sixth overall pick yet. "When I'm going to be concerned is when we're not making progress, and when we're not seeing him get better, week-in, week-out," Mangini said. "That, to me, is a concern."

Our View:Gholston was viewed by many as a boom or bust type pick, and so far it looks like he may end up being the latter. Give him some time, though, as even those that predicted big things for him knew he was raw.

The AP reports that Vernon Gholston is still trying to grasp the Jets' defense. “I just looked over the plays that I’ve had and kind of evaluate myself a little bit, see the things I need to do better and try to get a better grasp of the concepts on defense,” Gholston said Thursday. “We put in a lot of new stuff over the bye week, so I was just trying to get a handle on that kind of stuff.”

Our View:Gholston was a defensive end with the Buckeyes and set the school’s single-season record with 14 sacks last year. The Jets are transforming Gholston into a 3-4 outside linebacker, and the transition has taken lots of getting used to. Gholston has one tackle on defense, but had four special-teams tackles in the Jets’ 56-35 victory over Arizona in Week 4. The effort earned Gholston the Jets’ special teams player of the week award.

Coach Eric Mangini says he is not overly concerned about the slow development of first round pick Vernon Gholston. "Guys develop differently," Mangini said. "There's no one set timeline that I've ever seen for a rookie. All he has to do is keep chipping away at it and keep making progress each week."

Our View:The number six overall pick has been a nonfactor in the first two games. He holds no fantasy value except for perhaps in deep keeper leagues.

Just as he was in training camp, Jets rookie outside linebacker Vernon Gholston is struggling, and was responsible for a penalty when he was the 12th man on the field, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Gholston has done absolutely nothing, so fantasy owners who selected him in IDP leagues hoping for a Shawne Merriman-esque start to his career should cut bait and look elsewhere.

Jets first-round selection Vernon Gholston has been among the biggest disappointments in training camp, and had a poor night in the team's final preseason game, with just three tackles in over 40 snaps, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:Ghoston was supposed to come in and be a pass rusher on the outside for New York, but that has yet to happen. If you drafted him for depth in IDP leagues with the hope that he would put up a decent number of sacks, it doesn't look like that is in the forecast early on.

First-round rookie (sixth overall) Vernon Gholston had another quiet game in the preseason against Washington, according to the Star-Ledger. He registered three tackles, but failed to make any big plays.

Our View:The Jets are being patient with him, but equally have to be anxious to see him make a positive impact on defense.

After missing one day of training camp, Vernon Gholston has signed a five-year, $50 million deal with the New York Jets, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Gholston is guaranteed $21 million, and he will provide an immediate pass rushing threat off the edge in the team's 3-4 defense.
July 24, 2008
Vernon Gholston has reportedly signed with the Jets, according to Newsday. Terms of the deal are yet to be announced. The team released defensive back Etienne Boulay, to make room on the roster for the first-round pick out of Ohio State.

Our View:Gholston is signed in time for camp, but missed valuable practice time through the off-season since being drafted.

The Jets continue to work diligently to get 1st-round draft pick defensive lineman Vernon Gholston signed to his first NFL contract so he can report to training camp on time, and reports out of New York indicate the sides are close, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:As of Wednesday night, Gholston, the Jets' top draft pick (No. 6 overall), still was unsigned. However, the two sides made late progress, according to two NFL sources, and were expected to have a marathon negotiating session with the hope of producing an agreement by Thursday. That Gholston wasn't signed by Wednesday's reporting date was somewhat surprising, considering the top four picks in the draft are under contract. But recent changes in the collective bargaining agreement complicated matters, especially with regard to contract length. By rule, Gholston can sign for up to six years, but it could end up being a five-year deal with about $24 million in guarantees. Gholston probably will be paid in the neighborhood of $8 million to $9 million per year, making it one of the richest in team history.

Vernon Gholston is probably not going to start, as the New York Jets plan to transition him slowly onto the field, according to Pro Football Weekly. The web site reports he will be used initially only in pass rushing situations.

Our View:Even if he only plays on passing downs, Gholston can still make some noise. He likely won't pile up the tackles, but his most important job is to get to the quarterback anyway. Double digit sacks are probably an unrealistic goal, but he will still register his share.
April 26, 2008
The New York Jets selected Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston with the sixth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View:Gholston possesses freakish measurables, but some pundits feel he disappears too often on tape. Regardless, he will likely start at outside linebacker on the other side of Calvin Pace in the Jets 3-4 scheme.
April 20, 2008
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Vernon Gholston figures to be one of the first names - maybe even the very first - announced from the podium in the opening round of the NFL draft on Saturday. One of the few questions surrounding Gholston is where to play him in the pros. He was a defensive end in Ohio State's 4-3 defense, but could play either end or outside linebacker in an NFL team's 3-4 alignment. "Gholston has excited people," ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. told the Kansas City Star. "Those kinds of players, those attacking, outside-linebacker/defensive-end types, are going to help you right away."

Our View:Rumor has it that Miami is considering making the Ohio State defensive end, their overall top selection. Surprising, but possible. Earlier this week, the Sun-Sentinel reported, the Fins contacted seeking the representatives for Gholston to see what it would take to sign the uber-athlete.

Following a story that continues to grow, while the Miami Dolphins continue to talk contract with Tom Condon, the agent for University of Michigan OT Jake Long, and has reportedly contacted the agents for University of Virginia DE Chris Long and LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, it appears the team is adding another name to the list of potential choices, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The Sun-Sentinel reports the Fins are also seeking talks with the representatives for Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston .

Our View:Gholston turned heads in this year’s Scouting Combine and has continued to grow his draft stock in personal workouts, ranked as the one player at his position capable of pushing Long, former son of NFL great Howie Long and long viewed as the top DE of choice in this year’s draft, as the top DE available for hire. Securing such a deal, while crucial in the process for the Fins, should not necessarily indicate the choice is made. This has become a regular practice for NFL franchises in today’s business model and it would be wise for any team in this position to seek multiple options. The names mentioned as potential candidates do not shock, though the absence of QB Matt Ryan and RB Darren McFadden certainly gives those teams that come later in the 1st Round a ray of hope.

Vernon Gholston is a possible target for the Raiders with their fourth overall pick, according to ProFootballTalk. A league source stated that there are "strong indications" that Oakland will select Gholston. His draft stock has improved greatly as a result of strong pre-draft workouts. He would likely be a starter right away in Oakland.

The New England Patriots put Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston through a private workout yesterday, according to Fan Nation. The Patriots, who have the seventh overall selection, schedule numerous private workouts leading up to the draft. The workouts don't necessarily indicate surefire interest, but it does reflect that more information is being sought before making a determination. Gholston, who is currently one of the “risers” in the 2008 NFL draft, might not make it to New England at 1.07 according to recent rumors in the media.

Vernon Gholston was a standout two weeks ago at the Indianapolis scouting combine, but blew his measurements out of the water at his recent Pro Day, according to FOX Sports. To be certain, Gholston was one of the true standouts at the NFL Draft Combine two weeks ago. At 6-3, 266 pounds, the defensive end/linebacker ran a mind-boggling 4.67 40-yard-dash and measured in with an impressive 35.5-inch vertical jump. Fast forward to this past Saturday, and Gholston blew his late February times and measurements out of the water, clocking in with a jaw-dropping 4.58 40-yard-dash and exhibiting a 42-inch vertical. Gholston, who was already a lock top 10 pick, could move into the top 5 and beyond with this scintillating performance at Ohio State’s Pro Day.
