Former first-round draft pick Robert Meachem was inactive for the Saints Week 1 contest, but New Orleans head coach Sean Payton said he does not think it will be a regular occurrence, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "I think it was just this first week. I don't envision that being the case all season long," Payton said.

Our View:Must be reassuring for Meachem to know that Payton has no plans to bench him for the entire year. The big wideout had a nice preseason, and looked like he was coming on as somebody who could help the Saints and fantasy owners alike, but being sat down Week 1 is not a positive sign.

Week 1 Inactives: WR Robert Meachem, RB Aaron Stecker, CB Usama Young, CB Mike McKenzie, LB Mark Simoneau, LB Troy Evans, T Jermon Bushrod, DT Hollis Thomas.

Our View:Kind of surprising that Robert Meachem is on the inactive list after a strong offseason and slate of preseason games. With Stecker out, look for McAllister and Pierre Thomas to share the power running load against Tampa Bay.

Robert Meachem had another nice showing Saturday, catching four passes for 71 yards in a win over Cincinnati.

Our View:Meachem has looked good in camp and the preseason, but he's still only the No. 5 option, at best, in the Saints' passing game right now.

Former first-round pick, wide receiver Robert Meachem, had a great preseason debut, catching four passes for 139 yards and a score as the Saints beat Arizona 24-10.

Our View:This is the type of performance fantasy owners thought was possible for Meachem. He missed most of last season and did not catch a pass, but he could be in line for a decent year, and fantasy owners should pay more attention to how he plays in future preseason contests.

Reports from New Orleans training camp indicate one of the more intriguing position battles this season may be coming from the Saints' receiving corps, according to the Times-Picayune. According to the Times, both Marques Colston and David Patten have secured roles in the starting lineup, but lining up in the slot remains open to competition between Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem .

Our View:Henderson is injured and might not be back for a week or two, leaving a window of opportunity for Meachem to shine with the 1st-team offense. Early reports indicate Meachem is taking full advantage and is likely to earn, at the very least, a share of the workload among these top four guys. Meanwhile both Terrance Copper and Lance Moore are expected to focus on special teams until more options are needed behind those top receivers. We'll keep you posted on the battle between Meachem and Henderson as it could carry heavy implications for fantasy owners.
