Raiders director of squad development Willie Brown has stated that JaMarcus Russell was absent from the team's voluntary offseason workouts yesterday due to personal reasons and should be back with the team today and in better shape that last season, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Our View:Does "being lazy and not caring about your improvement" count as a personal reason? To Russell's credit, Brown said that Russell had to be in Alabama to "close a home", though we still won't believe that Russell is a changed man until he gives us a reason to believe so.

JaMarcus Russell was not present at the Raiders' voluntary offseason workouts that started today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:Russell has become somewhat of a joke across NFL circles, known for his poor work ethic and errant throws that have led to the former No. 1 pick's overall legacy as a monumental bust. You'd think that he'd have learned by now to at least show some sort of effort toward becoming a better player, though that does not appear to be the case in the early stages of this offseason.

John Clayton of ESPN believes that JaMarcus Russell should be the top candidate to start at quarterback for the Raiders in 2010.

Our View:Hue Jackson was brought in to help develop and bring the best out of Russell, who has been a bust so far with Oakland. Bruce Gradkowski will push him for the No. 1 gig in training camp.

While the Raiders have apparently still not officially decided head coach Tom Cable's fate, they have reportedly hired former Ravens quarterback coach Hue Jackson as their new offensive coordinator, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

Our View:Jackson was set to interview for the same position in Chicago, so the Raiders decided to stop messing around and hire him after days of rumors. His entry into the fold in Oakland makes it very unlikely that Cable will be fired, considering no one, not even Al Davis, would hire an offensive coordinator before hiring a head coach. Stay tuned.

JaMarcus Russell will not be released this offseason, according to ESPN.

Our View:As expected, Raiders owner Al Davis is still reluctant to cut the already amazingly-long cord he has given to the former number one overall pick. With Tom Cable expected to return as head coach, however, Russell will almost certainly be riding the pine next season. Maybe, just maybe - somehow - Russell will learn from this experience and use it to get better and work harder. Miracles can happen, after all.
