Coach Mike Shanahan said that Mike Bell got the majority of the carries in the second half Sunday because he was running better than Tatum Bell, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "He (quarterbacks coach Bobby Turner) kind of gets a feel of how the backs are feeling during the game," Shanahan said Monday. "Bobby felt at that time, Mike was running a little bit better than Tatum was, like he was the hot back, and gave him some more opportunities, and after looking at the film, he was right. Mike was playing exceptionally well. Tatum wasn't having one of his better games."
December 17, 2006
While Tatum Bell struggled on Sunday, Mike Bell had a solid day. Mike rushed for 61 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. He now has seven touchdowns this year.
November 24, 2006
Mike Bell started Thursday at Kansas City but didn't do much with the opportunity, rushing 10 times for 28 yards. Bell also had three catches for five yards. Tatum Bell (turf toes) and Cedric Cobbs didn't dress for the Broncos, and Damien Nash (four carries, no yards) wasn't a factor. The Broncos host Seattle in Week 13.

Mike Bell is starting for the Broncos tonight with Tatum Bell inactive. Damien Nash will back him up.
November 22, 2006
Mike Bell practiced on Wednesday and was upgraded to probable on the official NFL injury report. Tatum Bell was also upgraded to probable, which makes the Denver running back situation even more difficult to figure. Odds are good that Mike Bell will at least get significant playing time.
November 21, 2006
Mike Bell is questionable this week with a thigh injury, according to the Sports Network. At this point, he doesn't appear to be in danger of missing Thursday's game against the Chiefs.
November 19, 2006
Mike Bell ran well Sunday as the Broncos' primary running back, picking up 90 yards and two TDs on 20 carries. Bell also caught two passes for 17 yards.
November 16, 2006
Mike Bell has kept a positive attitude despite being deactivated last week. According to the Broncos website, Bell took it as a message. "I’ve got to fight harder," he said. "You’ve got to get 2 and 3 (yards on carries). You can’t accept 1(-yard-runs). I’m going in with a different attitude."
November 13, 2006
The Broncos deactivated Mike Bell and Cedric Cobbs (ankle) Sunday and went with starter Tatum Bell and Damien Nash as their primary running backs. The Broncos made Mike Bell inactive because they felt he took a step back in the previous game in terms of exploiting cutback lines, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "I've got a lot of confidence in Mike Bell and Cedric," coach Mike Shanahan said. "I wanted to give Damien a chance because he's been practicing very well and I wanted to see what he could do. There's a lot of competition at the running back position. Obviously, Tatum's our starter and we'll evaluate that week by week as to which way we'll go."
November 12, 2006
Mike Bell is inactive for the Broncos today, and so is Cedric Cobbs. While Cobbs has an ankle injury, Bell was a coaches' decision. That leaves Damien Nash and fullback Cecil Sapp to back up Tatum Bell.
November 12, 2006
Mike Bell's value for today's game appears to be diminishing. Tatum Bell is expected to return to action today and start, and the Denver Post reports that there's a chance Mike Bell may not even be active for the game. The Broncos apparently are considering replacing Mike Bell with Damien Nash, who was promoted from the practice squad yesterday. Mike Bell had just 28 yards on 17 carries last week in place of the injured Tatum Bell.
November 5, 2006
Mike Bell started in place of the injured Tatum Bell on Sunday, but he did little with his opportunity, picking up just 28 yards on 17 carries. He did catch five passes for 40 yards, but they weren't enough to salvage his day.
October 29, 2006
Mike Bell replaced a gimpy Tatum Bell as the primary runner for the Broncos in the second half of Sunday's game against the Colts. Mike Bell ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns, while Tatum had only 27 yards on 13 carries. Tatum will probably remain the starter, but Mike will see action if Tatum can't stay healthy.
September 27, 2006
Mike Bell is now a true backup, as the Broncos have decided to halt their rotating backs plan and feature Tatum Bell. However, Tatum Bell hasn't proved (in fairness, he hasn't had the opportunity) that he can hold up under a full work load, so Mike Bell have yet have significant value this season.
September 15, 2006
Mike Bell says he's not held back at all by his dislocated middle finger, the Denver Post reports. "I haven't even been thinking about it," Bell said Thursday. "I don't see any problems." He's expected to work behind Tatum Bell Sunday against Kansas City.
September 13, 2006
Mike Bell is expected to return kicks again in Week 2, according to the Denver Post. Bell returned the first two kickoffs of Sunday's game but was replaced in the role after fracturing and dislocating his finger, even though he remained in the game at running back.
September 12, 2006
Mike Bell has stated he will practice this week and be ready to play Sunday despite suffering a fracture to his right middle finger in Week 1, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "It was a fracture, the bone came out, the fingernail came out, but (the finger) looked like it went back in place," coach Mike Shanahan said. "He should be able to go." Bell said he planned to just tape the finger to one of his other fingers against the Chiefs.
September 11, 2006
Mike Bell said he dislocated his right middle finger during yesterday's game, according to the Rocky Mountain News. He may require surgery on the digit. However, coach Mike Shanahan said Bell injured the finger on the second play of the game and was able to finish out the contest, according to the Broncos' official Web site. "Mike had a fingernail torn off in the first quarter," Shanahan said. "It looked quite ugly. He came back and I was really pleased with that. He showed some toughness."
September 10, 2006
Mike Bell rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and caught four passes for 30 yards in the season opener for the Broncos. September 10, 2006
Mike Bell did NOT start for the Broncos on Sunday. Tatum Bell got the nod, though both are expected to see plenty of work. Mike Bell was actually on the field first, as he returned to opening kickoff.
September 5, 2006
Denver head coach Mike Shanahan said that he will not name a starting running back before Week 1, according to the Denver Post. Mike Bell has been on top of the depth chart and has done nothing to lose his spot, but Tatum Bell has reportedly showed improved work ethic. "I know I'm going to play some, but whether or not I start, I'm not sure," Mike Bell said. "I'm not worried about it because I'm just happy to be here. Coaches have told us they're not going to tell us anything until game day." Both Bells are likely to get carries, and Cedric Cobbs could see action, as well.
August 20, 2006
Mike Bell bounced back from an uninspiring preseason debut with a solid performance in the Broncos' second exhibition game on Saturday night. Bell rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He likely put some distance between himself and Tatum Bell, who rushed for 24 yards on seven carries.
August 12, 2006
Mike Bell started the preseason opener for the Broncos and rushed for just 20 yards on seven carries. He also lost a fumble. Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan doesn't generally have much tolerance for fumbles, so Bell had better be more careful with the ball.
August 7, 2006
The Denver Post reports that Mike Bell has moved up to No. 1 on the Denver depth chart at running back and will start the preseason opener. Tatum Bell is No. 2 on the depth chart and Ron Dayne is No. 3.
July 31, 2006
Undrafted rookie Mike Bell has been so impressive early in training camp that he's passed Cedric Cobbs as the No. 3 running back behind Ron Dayne and Tatum Bell, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "A lot of players see him making some plays that they haven't seen in a while," coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's right in the mix." The former Arizona back has been practicing against the second and third strings, and it's early in camp, though.
