The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Tarvaris Jackson believes the quarterback battle between him and Sage Rosenfels is at 50-50 right now. "We're going to fight for it as hard as we can," Jackson told the paper.

Our View:This could all be a moot point if the Vikes land Brett Favre, but it would seem like Jackson would have the slight edge since he has been in the system longer. Rosenfels is probably the better quarterback, but Jackson has more upside.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Vikings head coach Brad Childress would like Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte to compete for the starting quarterback position next season. "We need to put somebody in place that will push him and compete with (Jackson)," Childress said. "I think competition is the nature of the game."

Our View:Childress said that Frerotte has not asked for his release nor expressed an interest to be traded, but the paper contends the veteran signal-caller said on Jan. 7 he would return to the Vikings only if he were named the starter over Jackson.

ESPN.com reports that the Vikings approached Fox Sports' Jay Glazer about getting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson into a mixed martial arts program. However, Jackson has declined interest.

Our View:This is certainly an odd story for the fact that Jackson is currently in line to be the Vikings' starter next season and MMA is an extremely physical sport that would increase his odds of getting injured. We're not completely sure what the reasoning was for the request.

The Vikings will make finding a new quarterback the No. 1 priority this offseason, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The team is expected to have $20.4 million available under the salary cap.

Our View:Shouldn't this article have come out about 10 minutes after last weekend's loss to the Eagles? Welcome to the party, Star Tribune.

Coach Brad Childress felt that Tarvaris Jackson made progress this season, but added that his status as a starting quarterback for 2009 is yet to be decided, according to the Star Tribune. Childress said, "It’s really kind of a whole offseason study. I’m not going to pass judgement right at this particular point. I think you owe it to everybody here in the organization, just like we always have, to turn over all the rocks and see what you have there. I would also say there’s point with Tarvaris of continuing to evolve as a quarterback. While you’d like that process to happen immediately, it doesn’t always happen immediately. But there’s not anything we’re going to leave unturned in terms of free agency, draft."

Our View:Jackson was inconsistent this season, but did throw nine touchdown passes and only two interceptions over nine games, while maintaining a 95.4 efficiency rating.
