Vernon Davis grabbed a two-yard touchdown pass in Sunday's 35-16 loss to the Rams.

Our View:Davis has now scored in two straight games (his only two scores of the year), but unfortunately those were his only two catches of the games.
November 15, 2008
Vernon Davis spent extra time catching passes after Friday's practice, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Perhaps the 49ers intend to utilize Davis more in the passing attack this weekend against the Rams. Davis has been a non-factor in fantasy leagues this season, with only 17 receptions for 214 yards and one score over nine outings.
November 10, 2008
Vernon Davis had just one catch on Monday night, but it was good enough to get him his first touchdown of the season as the 49ers lost 24-29 in Arizona.

Our View:Davis continues to struggle but it seems obvious that he and coach Mike Singletary have ironed out their differences.
November 6, 2008
Coach Mike Singletary indicated that Vernon Davis will remain the 49ers' starting tight end for Week 10 at Arizona, according to the Sacramento Bee. Singletary said, "Oh, yeah. Heck yeah. We do want to win."

Our View:This is encouraging news, but Davis only mustered 16 receptions over eight games and is still yet to score his first touchdown.

Not only did 49ers coach Mike Singletary send Vernon Davis to the locker room before the team's game was over last week, he also dropped his pants at halftime and showed the team his rear end for some type of visual aid. After that, he then spoke to the team for a few minutes with his pants around his ankles, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:That's just weird. Singletary clearly has passion, but he may want to re-think how he gets his points across. It's possible that the team responds to this type of motivation, but they could also be turned off by it.
October 26, 2008
Coach Mike Singletary sent Vernon Davis to the locker room during Sunday's game and spoke about the incident after the game, reports the 49ers' official website. "I told him he'd do a better job for us right now taking a shower and coming back and watching the game than going out on the field, simple as that," Singletary said. Singletary would not commit to starting Davis after the team's bye in Week 9.

Our View:It's really not looking good for Davis, but maybe this is what he needs to wakeup. The former first-round pick has clearly underachieved all season, and during his entire career, for that matter.
October 26, 2008
49ers interim head coach Mike Singletary pulled Vernon Davis from Sunday's game after he committed a penalty and sent him to the locker room.

Our View:Singletary is making his presence felt early. It will be interesting to see how this situation shakes out this week, but this can't be good for Davis owners who have already put up with a terribly inconsistent season.

49ers tight end Vernon Davis has made great strides in the team's offense, according to 49ers.com. "He’s progressed so much since the beginning of the season. It’s really exciting. It hasn’t manifested itself in catches necessarily, but we can see it,” said 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Our View:Davis has 11 catches for 162 yards this season, much to the disappointment of fantasy owners. With Martz having more confidence in him, maybe he'll see a rise in production.
October 12, 2008
Vernon Davis is being used as a blocker more than a receiver so far this season, which is the primary reason why he only has five receptions, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:That trend looks to continue today against the Eagles, who love to blitz under the direction of coordinator Jim Johnson.
October 10, 2008
49ers tight end Vernon Davis is not very happy that he has such limited production this season, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. During the games, it's the most frustrating time. I try not to be frustrated. Sometimes it's hard. It's hard when you set goals for yourself and it's taking a while to get there," he said.

Our View:Davis was a combine wonder, showing unparalleled speed and strength for a tight end, but that has not translated to the field. He has just five catches on the year, much to the frustration of not only himself, but fantasy owners as well.
October 6, 2008
Vernon Davis has done a fine job blocking opponents this season, though he has only five receptions through five games, according to The Press Democrat. "He's done an outstanding job blocking, both pass and run," HC Mike Nolan said. "The objective is to get the ball in his hand. He has a responsibility to himself to run the correct routes. By no stretch would I say he's a bust."

Our View:Davis may not be a real life bust, but he is the fantasy football version of Britney Spears career, and that our friends is a complete and utter bust. He certainly can't get any worse, but we've also seen nothing to recommend even rostering him at this point.
September 28, 2008
Vernon Davis had only one catch in Sunday's game. After the catch, he shouted at the 49ers' sideline, angering head coach Mike Nolan, reports the San Jose Mercury News. "He got a little excited, yes he did, and I told him to sit down," said Nolan.

Our View:Davis has been a huge disappointment in the Mike Martz offense, and this action probably won't make matters any better.
September 7, 2008
Vernon Davis was involved in the 49ers offense on Sunday, something that wasn't always the case last season. The talented tight end caught three passes for 51 yards in the Week 1 loss to the Cardinals.

Our View:Mike Martz has never had such a talented tight end to work with, and he would be wise to continue to utilize the big receiver.
August 28, 2008
O.C. Mike Martz commented on Vernon Davis, according to the Sacramento Bee. Martz said, "I think that the numbers for Vernon, in terms of receptions, may or may not be there this year. It may fluctuate during the season. But what we expect from Vernon are big plays. He's a very, very substantial blocker, which really allows us to a lot of good things in the running game. There's no question about that. But, when we get him the ball we'd like to get him the ball down the field or get him the ball in the shallow routes and let him take off with it, so to speak."

Our View:Davis may not challenge strong totals in the receptions department, but should reach new highs in yards and touchdowns, and could move into the top-10 among fantasy tight ends, if not higher.
August 7, 2008
Vernon Davis stated that his role in going to increase "big time" with Mike Martz in control of the offense, according to the SF Chronicle. He believes he can be the top tight end in the NFL and said, "I'm going to be No. 1. That's my goal, nothing less. With this offense, I believe I can do it. I'm saying I'm going to have a great season. An awesome one. Under Martz, my role is going to increase big time. Way more touches. This is a new beginning. This is a breakout season."

Our View:Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson will be the starting receivers this season, but Davis is the most dangerous of the three, and could actually lead the 49ers in receptions and touchdowns in 2008.
July 28, 2008
Vernon Davis continues to field praise from new OC Mike Martz, according to the Press Democrat. "What we'll try to do with him is try to take advantage of his speed more, probably, than what they've done in the past. We'll try to get him down the field, more or less like a wide receiver -- move him out, move him around. At first it was so different for him, but he's really adapted well to it. He's really kind of thrived with it."

Our View:Face it, the 49ers need someone to catch passes in a scheme that could throw 60-70% of the time. Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson will get their share of looks, but Martz's early praise of Davis has some thinking that he could haul in up to 80 passes this season. Probably the biggest thing standing in his way is committing to memorize the new playbook.
June 24, 2008
Vernon Davis garnered praise from new OC Mike Martz, according to the Sacramento Bee. Martz said, "I don't know if anyone in the league can run like Davis can at that position. He gets down the field so fast. I don't know who beats him in a footrace." Martz also noted that Davis worked the hardest among all of the players in the off-season.

Our View:Martz just wants to polish his pass routes, and the team is going to take advantage of his speed this season, meaning he could see time on the outside as a vertical threat. Davis has elite skills and has a chance to join the elite class among fantasy tight ends this season, while under the direction of Martz.
June 18, 2008
Vernon Davis informs the team's official web site that he's running more deep routes this year, and he is even working in spots that O.C. Mike Martz's offense that are best described as "Torry Holt" and "Isaac Bruce."

Our View:Martz has never had a tight end as physically gifted as Davis, but it sounds like the former Rams head coach is figuring out how to move Vernon around and get him involved. The 49ers will pass a lot this year, and it would be silly of Martz to not utilize Davis' receiving talents, even if it means lining him up at receiver.
March 31, 2008
One of the most interesting things to watch in San Francisco in 2008 will be how well tight end Vernon Davis is able to digest new coordinator Mike Martz’s complicated offensive scheme, according to Pro Football Weekly. In regard to Davis’ performance last season, one of his teammates told a team source that he had never seen a NFL starter make so many mistakes. Davis, who started 14 games last season, compiled 52 receptions for 509 yards and four touchdowns, despite being used mostly as a possession receiver. It will be interesting to see how Martz implements Davis into the scheme, given the fact he has never prominently featured the tight end position in the past.
March 20, 2008
Vernon Davis has gained praise from Coach Nolan, according to the SF Chronicle. Nolan was asked about Davis' route running skils and replied, "He's a wild horse kind of player rather than a polished tight end. Davis still has a lot to learn, but is better after the catch than Gates and Gonzalez. In terms of blocking, Davis is better than the other two could ever dream of being." Davis has potential to be an elite fantasy tight end.
