Derek Anderson has been benched as the Browns' starting quarterback, according to ESPN. Brady Quinn will now take the reigns.

Our View:And with merit. Anderson is last among all NFL quarterbacks with at least six games played in quarterback rating, and second to last in passing yards. His turnover-to-touchdown ratio is 6-to-1. Expect the Browns to finally take a long, serious look at Quinn three seasons after drafting him.
November 9, 2009
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Derek Anderson is not locked into starting at quarterback for the Browns in Week 10.

Our View:Not surprising considering he's last among all NFL quarterbacks with at least six games played in QB rating and second to last in yards passing. He has thrown nine interceptions and lost thee fumbles while throwing for just two touchdowns. With Brady Quinn yet to get a fair shot at locking down the Browns' QB job in three years in the league, the time is now.
November 3, 2009
In an indictment of just how pitiful the Browns offense has been this season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the New Orleans Saints have scored six defensive touchdowns this season, while Cleveland has scored just five offensive touchdowns.

Our View:Yet first year coach Eric Mangini and the Browns continue to go with faltering veterans Derek Anderson and Jamal Lewis at quarterback and running back, respectively. Something is deeply wrong in Cleveland, and it's not all because of recently fired first-year GM George Kokinis. Meanwhile, Brady Quinn and Jerome Harrison continue to wait for their chances.
November 2, 2009
ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that the Cleveland Browns have fired GM George Kokinis. Kokinis was reportedly escorted out of the buliding earlier in the day.

Our View:There is some major controversy going down in Cleveland, as Kokinis was reportedly fired "with cause", meaning he will not be paid the balance of his contract. This whole situation is just further proof that the Browns are as dysfunctional as it gets.
November 2, 2009
Over the past four weeks, Derek Anderson has completed just 29-of-87 passes for 320 yards. He has one touchdown and five interceptions in that span.

Our View:His high yardage total for any of the four games is 122, and he has failed to eclipse 100 in the other three. It's one of the truly inept streaks of quarterbacking in NFL history, and it speaks to Anderson's awfulness that has been thoroughly outplayed by the Raiders' JaMarcus Russell during the span. With Brady Quinn's incentive laden contract about to get expensive for the Browns if he plays anymore this season, however, the team seems likely to stick with Anderson. Mercifully, the Browns fans get a break this week as the team is on bye.
November 1, 2009
Derek Anderson continues to struggle, as he only completed 6-of-17 passes for 76 yards in Sunday's 30-6 loss at Chicago. He had no touchdowns and threw two interceptions.

Our View:Brady Quinn saw some action, and completed 1-of-3 passes for nine yards. Anderson is clearly not getting the job done for Cleveland - but it remains to be seen if they will turn to Quinn. They have a bye in Week 9.
October 29, 2009
SI.com is reporting that Browns fans are considering staging a protest on November 16th's Monday night game by walking in late for the team's nationally televised contest. Fans are unhappy with the team's losing culture, which prompted the protest.

Our View:While it seems unlikely that this move will get pulled off to enough of an extent, it would send a major message to management if most of the stadium was empty when the Monday Night Football broadcast started. Don't expect anything to come of this, and it shouldn't affect the play on the field.
October 28, 2009
Derek Anderson fully practiced Wednesday, according to the Browns' official website. He is nursing a hip ailment.

Our View:Anderson is not performing well, but looks to be a good bet to start Sunday's game at Chicago, barring a setback with his hip.
October 26, 2009
Browns coach Eric Mangini again stood by quarterback Derek Anderson despite another abysmal performance on Sunday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:Anderson was an embarrassing 12-of-29 for 99 yards, throwing one interception and no touchdowns. It's clear that the Browns and Mangini are not interested in giving Brady Quinn a fair shot at locking down the team's quarterback position he was drafted to fill, and his days in Cleveland are surely numbered.
October 25, 2009
Derek Anderson struggled in today's 31-3 loss to the Packers at Cleveland Browns Stadium, as he only completed 12-of-29 passes for 99 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.

Our View:Brady Quinn did not see any action in the game, even though Anderson could only lead the club to one field goal. Anderson held a dismal 41.7 efficiency rating heading into the game.
October 21, 2009
Derek Anderson fully practiced Wednesday, according to the Browns' official website. He is dealing with an ankle ailment.

Our View:Barring a setback, Anderson should be ready to start Sunday's home game against the Packers, but should not be considered as a fantasy option.
October 19, 2009
Despite another dreadful performance in Week 6, Derek Anderson again got a vote of confidence from Browns coach Eric Mangini, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:Anderson lost two fumbles on Sunday, threw an interception at the one yard line and went just 9-of-24 for 122 yards. His receivers again committed an inordinate amount of drops, but Anderson's play was undeniably ugly. With Brady Quinn still arguably worse, however, the Browns appear to have little choice but to roll with Anderson at this point.
October 12, 2009
Despite his dreadful Week 5 performance, in which he completed just 2-of-17 passes for 23 yards, Derek Anderson will remain the Browns' starting quarterback, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:Could Anderson be an even worse fantasy option than JaMarcus Russell? Maybe. Needless to say, your team is in a major pickle if you own either, but for now, keep Anderson over Russell.
October 11, 2009
Derek Anderson completed only two of his 17 passes in the Week 5 win over the Bills. He finished with 23 passing yards and threw one pick.

Our View:Wow. What can we say? The windy weather didn't help, but there is still no excuse for such a terrible outing. Yet somehow the Browns picked up a win. Crazy.
October 7, 2009
Pro Football Talk reports that Browns quarterback Derek Anderson is "glad" wide receiver Braylon Edwards is gone.

Our View:The quote was not direct, of course, but through one of those ever-present "sources." It might sound a bit strange for a quarterback struggling for his NFL life to be happy his most talented receiver is gone, but considering the amount of drops and drama in Edwards' life recently, it probably isn't. Mohamed Massaquoi is now, in all likelihood, Anderson's best target.
October 6, 2009
Derek Anderson will remain the Browns' starting quarterback for the time being, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.

Our View:Head coach Eric Mangini is satisfied with his play, and Brady Quinn will remain on the bench. Anderson almost led the Browns to a win over the rival Bengals in Week 4, but does not garner fantasy attention for Week 5 at Buffalo.
October 4, 2009
Derek Anderson completed 26-of-48 passes for 269 yards and one touchdown against one interception in the Week 4 overtime loss to Cleveland.

Our View:He also scored a rushing touchdown, and provided the Browns with more offensive spark than they had under Brady Quinn during the first three weeks. The Browns offense is still a work in progress, but there might be a faint light at the end of the tunnel.
September 30, 2009
The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that quarterback Derek Anderson will replace Brady Quinn as the Browns' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Bengals. Anderson took over for Quinn in the middle of last week's game against the Ravens and threw for 92 yards and three interceptions.

Our View:At this point it is irrelevant who starts at quarterback for the Browns, because both players just aren't very good. Quinn has struggled badly in his 2.5 games as a starter this season, but Anderson threw three picks in limited time last week. Neither player is even worth a fantasy roster spot, as they will likely take turns disappointing the Cleveland fans all season.
September 27, 2009
Derek Anderson completed 11-of-19 passes for 92 yards and three interceptions in Sunday's 34-3 loss at Baltimore.

Our View:Anderson was called into action after the club benched Brady Quinn, but Anderson failed to prove his worth with a terrible performance. Neither quarterback will be a good fantasy option for Week 4 against Cincinnati.
September 20, 2009
The AP reports that Eric Mangini did not deny being tempted to pull Brady Quinn in favor of Derek Anderson in Sunday's loss to the Broncos. When asked about it after the game, the coach responded, "What I'm looking to do is play better across the board."

Our View:Quinn has already been sacked nine times this season and the Browns have scored only one offensive touchdown. Anderson had a nice preseason, but Mangini elected to go with the younger Quinn, who has struggled.
September 9, 2009
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Derek Anderson may have tipped his hand to the media that Brady Quinn has won the starting quarterback job for the Browns.

Our View:Coach Mangini is trying to keep the news a secret from the Vikings, but Anderson said in a press conference Wednesday, "after this next two minutes are over I'm not going to be talking to you guys. It's pretty easy....Obviously, the rest of us have to go about our regular preparations and continue to do what we always do and just not talk to our families." Anderson seems to consider himself a non-starter by lumping his name in with "the rest of us", leading everyone to believe that Quinn has indeed won the job. That's what most pundits expected to happen anyway, so this is no big surprise. It's not official, but if you drafted Anderson in hopes that he would start, you'll likely want to drop him.
August 25, 2009
The Akron Beacon Journal says Derek Anderson will be named the team's starting quarterback over Brady Quinn if he can replicate his 8-of-13, 130-yard performance from last weekend against Tennessee next Saturday.

Our View:He did throw an interception, but also led the Browns on their first scoring drive in seven games, punctuated by a Jamal Lewis rushing touchdown. The new Eric Mangini led coaching staff has supposedly liked him since they got there, and it will take a huge effort from Brady Quinn to unseat him at this point.
August 19, 2009
Head coach Eric Mangini commented that he has been pleased with Derek Anderson's leadership qualities, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Mangini said, "Yes, he has done a nice job with recognizing things. I looked yesterday, I was not pleased with either guy, they were on the list of 80, but overall I think that both those guys are getting a greater awareness each week of, 'Okay, here's what the issues are. Here are the tools I have available. Here's how I need to approach it.' I'm looking forward to seeing his progress."

Our View:This is encouraging for Anderson, but Mangini is yet to name a starter for the Browns' next preseason game. Brady Quinn seems to have more upside than Anderson, but neither would likely be good enough to use as a starter in fantasy leagues this season.
August 14, 2009
Browns' head coach Eric Mangini has been working on the no-huddle offense every day in training camp, and Derek Anderson has been pleased with the results, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Anderson said, "Today I think I completed almost every ball (while running the no-huddle). Especially if you get against guys like Big Baby Shaun Rogers out there, you get him out there running around and you cannot get him off the field. You make guys adjust to that and adjust to your tempo. I think it has helped us. It has helped the big guys with their conditioning. It can be a weapon for us."

Our View:Mangini may feature the no-huddle at normal times during a game, and will try to spark a Browns' offense that failed to score any offensive touchdowns over the final six games of 2008.
August 9, 2009
Derek Anderson worked as the Browns' No. 1 quarterback during Sunday's scrimmage, according to Scout.com. He went 12-for-21 with 107 passing yards and an interception with no touchdowns. Brady Quinn fared slightly better as he completed 11-of-19 passes for 121 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

Our View:Head coach Eric Mangini was not impressed with either quarterback today, and there remains no separation among them for the starting job.
August 6, 2009
According to NFL.com, the competition for the role of starting QB between Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn is tightening up.

Our View:Quinn came in as a slight favorite, but Anderson has apparently closed the gap a bit the last three days of practice. Both QBs have been moving the ball well, but one would think that the organization wants to commit to the younger more highly touted Quinn. Anderson would have to largely outplay him to steal the job. He has also already accepted a backup role if the Browns decide to go with Quinn. The sooner the Browns decide, the better, as fantasy drafts are just around the corner.
August 3, 2009
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Browns' quarterback Derek Anderson has said that he will accept the backup role if he does not beat out Brady Quinn for the starting job. Anderson told the paper: "What my role is is going to be determined and I'll embrace whatever it is."

Our View:It's good that Anderson will accept the backup role, because unless he outplays Quinn by a large margin during camp it looks like that's where he will be. It seems like a long shot that Anderson will ever return to his Pro Bowl form, but he may be better served to get out of Cleveland at the first chance he gets.
July 17, 2009
ESPN.com reports that quarterback Derek Anderson has fully recovered from a calf strain and will be ready for the start of training camp.

Our View:Anderson has had a month to rest that balky calf and is now ready to square off with Brady Quinn for the Cleveland Browns Quarterback Sweepstakes. Obviously, the winner will garner all the fantasy attention.
June 12, 2009
Derek Anderson missed the second of two mandatory practices Friday while nursing a leg ailment, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Our View:Further details regarding the injury were not disclosed. Anderson cannot afford to miss much time while battling Brady Quinn for the No. 1 role at quarterback.
May 27, 2009
Derek Anderson is still in the running for the starting gig at quarterback, according to Scout.com. Head coach Eric Mangini said, "Quinn was just the starting rep the starting day. (Quinn and Anderson) both had exactly the same amount of reps. They have had the exact amount of reps in every practice."

Our View:Anderson broke out with 29 touchdown passes in 2007, but regressed last season with a 66.5 efficiency rating over 10 games (nine starts). Quinn has more upside and is considered the favorite to win the starting job.
April 18, 2009
Derek Anderson did not undergo offseason knee surgery following a left MCL injury that ended his 2008 campaign, according to ESPN. There were contrary reports stating that he did have surgery on his knee.

Our View:The Browns believe Anderson is 100 percent recovered, and he is expected to compete for the starting gig at quarterback in 2009. He fired 29 touchdown passes in 2007, but his fantasy outlook does not look good with elite tight end Kellen Winslow traded to Tampa Bay and top receiver Braylon Edwards potentially getting dealt to the Giants.
April 16, 2009
Derek Anderson is completely recovered from the injury to his MCL that was suffered at the end of last season, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Browns GM George Kokinis commented, "Derek's 100 percent. He's been working out. I think Derek's going to come in determined and will compete. He's 100 percent."

Our View:It doesn't appear that Anderson will need surgery, and he figures to compete with Brady Quinn for the starting job in Cleveland. There is still a chance one of the quarterbacks could be moved before the start of the 2009 season.
March 12, 2009
The Browns plan on paying Derek Anderson his $5MM roster bonus on Friday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:GM George Kokinis is trying to get the best players on the team, and considers Anderson one of them. So it looks like Brady Quinn will have to fight for the starting gig at quarterback for 2009.
February 21, 2009
According to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Browns head coach Eric Mangini will let quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson compete for the starting job, dispelling rumors that the latter would be traded away. "Injuries happen all the time and if you only have one guy at a position, suddenly things can dramatically change in terms of the approach of your offense," Mangini said. "You can never have too many quarterbacks."

Our View:Anderson is due a $5 million roster bonus on Mar. 13, which the Browns plan to pay to give themselves more time to figure out what to do with their former starting quarterback.
February 19, 2009
The Tampa Tribune reports that there is a growing possibility that quarterback Derek Anderson will be dealt to the Bucs prior to the draft. The Browns may settle for a third-round pick in return.

Our View:Anderson had a rough season after signing a hefty contract in the summer of 2008. The Bucs currently have Luke McCown penciled in to be their starting quarterback next season, and Anderson would be an upgrade.
February 15, 2009
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns and new head coach Eric Mangini are yet to determine what to do with quarterback Derek Anderson. "We haven't defined which way that has to go. I think I am open to all different possibilities," Mangini said on Feb. 4.

Our View:At least under former head coach Romeo Crennel, the Browns gave every indication they would give the starting job to Brady Quinn, who impressed in late-season duty in 2008. The problem with Anderson, a former Pro Bowler, lies in the fact that it would cost the Browns just as much to trade him away as it would to keep him. Also, he is due a $50,000 workout bonus this March regardless of whether he is traded or retained.
February 11, 2009
If the Jets decide to trade for a quarterback, targeting Derek Anderson may make the most sense for them, according to NFL.com. Anderson has a $5 million roster bonus that takes effect about a month from now.

Our View:Anderson has a pretty loaded contract, but it's cheaper than what Favre's was last season. The quarterback was a big disappointment in 2008 when he totaled just nine touchdowns. He accumulated 32 touchdowns in 2007.
