The Chargers have had a "change of heart" and decided to keep running back Darren Sproles, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. They are placing a first and third round tender on the diminutive running back and return man.

Our View:This, of course, means they can match any offer Sproles receives, or get a first and third round draft pick from the team that signs him if he goes elsewhere. According to the paper, "the move guarantees Sproles a salary of $7.27 million if he stays with the Chargers," and makes him highly unlikely to go anywhere else.

The Redskins are expected to be one of the teams bidding on free agent Darren Sproles, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:We also reported earlier today that the Redskins will be bidding on Julius Peppers; with Dan Snyder's deep pockets they'll surely be active on the free agent market, though it's highly unlikely they'd be able to sign both. The Chargers have also expressed interest in re-signing Sproles, and wherever he lands, you can expect him to be used as part of a platoon role.

The Chargers would like to retain Darren Sproles for the 2010 campaign - just not at his tender price of $7.3MM, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:San Diego would like to lock him up long-term at a more attractive price. They may also still target a running back in the first-round of the draft.

The Chargers interviewed running back Jonathan Dwyer (Georgia Tech) at the NFL Combine this week, according to ESPN.

Our View:Dwyer's meeting went well, and San Diego is in the market for a running back following the release of LaDainian Tomlinson, and with Darren Sproles expected to leave in free agency. The Chargers currently hold the 28th pick in the first round of the 2010 draft.

According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, the 49ers are no longer interested in Darren Sproles due to the fact that he is expected to command $5 million per year.

Our View:The 49ers were expected to be a leading candidate for Sproles' services, but $5 million is too much to spend on a third-down back/special teamer. Buried behind Frank Gore and Glen Coffee, he wouldn't provide much of an impact outside of returning kicks.
