Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated indicated that Frank Gore was slimmer at the 49ers' OTA's in mid-May.

Our View:He was overweight earlier in May, but appears to be back in shape now. Gore only handled 240 rushing attempts under pass-happy offensive coordinator Mike Martz last season, but should see a heftier workload on the ground under new coordinator Jimmy Raye.

According to NFL.com, Frank Gore will not be seeing a reduced workload after the team drafted Alabama running back Glen Coffee in the third round.

Our View:Gore is ready to take on the full load again this season, so don't expect his numbers to suffer at all because of Coffee. Coffee could be a decent handcuff option if he starts the season as the backup to Gore, but he should only have fantasy value if Gore goes down.

The 49ers will likely target a running back at some point in the NFL draft to complement and help extend the career of franchise starter Frank Gore, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The 49ers ranked 27th in rushing offense in 2008, and head coach Mike Singletary said, "I want to know I have the ability to know that I can run the ball. I want to have the ability to know that I can impose my will on the defense. I want to know that in the fourth quarter, I can run the football. When they put eight people in the box, I can still run the football, if I want to."

Our View:Andre Brown (Texas A&M) and Kory Sheets (Purdue) visited the 49ers. The club may have interest in Rashad Jennings (Liberty) as well. As of now the only running backs on the 49ers' roster are Gore, Michael Robinson and the unproven Thomas Clayton.

The 49ers will look to upgrade their backup running back situation this offseason. Frank Gore remains the starter, but head coach Mike Singletary's comments suggest DeShaun Foster may not return. "(Gore is) a special back, and I'm very excited over the way he runs," Singletary tells Pro Football Weekly. "But I think we could help him if we could have someone sharing the load who has a different style."

Our View:The 49ers rarely used any other running back when Gore was healthy in 2008, and Singletary is stating the obvious here. Even the best workhorses need breaks to stay healthy, and the 49ers might look to add a mid-round back or check out a free agent like Maurice Morris to help shoulder the load. Fantasy owners should not be scared by the coach's comments.

The Contra Costa Times reports that the Raiders are considering longtime NFL assistant Ted Tollner for the team's vacant offensive line coaching position.

Our View:Tollner was fired on Dec. 30 as the 49ers' quarterbacks coach along with offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Toller has worked with quarterbacks such as Trent Edwards, preparing young signal-callers for the NFL scouting combine.
