Player Notes
November 30, 2008
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 29-of-45 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns in the Week 13 loss to the Panthers. He also threw a pick late in the fourth quarter.

Our View:Rodgers led the comeback effort and seemed to pick up his play after Ryan Grant hurt his hand. Fantasy owners should like the Week 14 matchup against the Texans.
November 30, 2008
There is a 100 percent chance of snow today in Green Bay, the NFL Network reports.

Our View:It's in the 30's, so it's not bitterly cold and the report did not say it was overly windy. Snow isn't a huge deal if it isn't coming down hard and isn't accompanied by other bad weather factors.
November 24, 2008
Aaron Rodgers threw three interceptions, though he also threw for two scores and ran for another while accumulating 248 passing yards in Green Bay's loss to the Saints.

Our View:Rodgers has had better games, but he wound up forcing passes near the end of the contest, which resulted in one of the picks. He is now responsible for 23 total touchdowns passing and receiving.
November 19, 2008
Aaron Rodgers wasn't listed on the Packers' injury report on Wednesday, according to the Packers' official site.

Our View:This is a good sign for the Packers, especially with the long week before a Monday night game. The crown for the mediocre NFC North is up for grabs, so a healthy Rodgers could lead them to a late-season run which should be plenty to win the division.
November 13, 2008
Aaron Rodgers practiced fully on Thursday, the first time that he has been listed as a full participant in practice since Week 4 when he injured his shoulder, according to the Packers Official Website.

Our View:Rodgers could use some good news after throwing just two touchdown passes the past three weeks. He has a solid matchup this week against the Bears and should be considered a must start in all standard leagues.
November 13, 2008
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers took part in nearly all of the team's practice on Wednesday, the most since he injured his right shoulder, according to the Green Bay Prss-Gazette.

Our View:Rodgers has thrown just one touchdown pass in his last two games, but he has a very solid matchup with Chicago this week, as the Bears sport the third-worst pass defense in the NFL in terms of yards per game allowed.
November 4, 2008
Coach Mike McCarthy criticized Aaron Rodgers' decision making following Sunday's close loss to the Titans, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. McCarthy said, "Disappointed offensively with the red zone production. We had a number of minus decisions down there. We need to do a better job of taking what the defense gives us, staying within the offense. But our decision-making was poor as a whole in the red zone, and it factored in the outcome in a number of those series. We had a number of carries actually where the ball was thrown instead of giving it to the back when the ball should have went to the back. I would have liked to have got Ryan Grant some more opportunities."

Our View:Rodgers shall remain the Packers' starting quarterback, and some poor performances are to be expected as this is only his first season as a starter. He still maintains a solid 95.3 efficiency rating, and is worth employing this weekend in a crucial NFC North showdown with Minnesota.
November 2, 2008
Aaron Rodgers completed 22-of-41 passes for 314 yards in Sunday's 19-16 loss to Tennessee, with one touchdown pass and one interception.

Our View:Rodgers collected his third 300-yard game of the season, and has thrown nine touchdown passes over his last five outings.
November 2, 2008
Bob Holtzman of ESPN indicates that Aaron Rodgers is expected to "air it out" today against the Titans.

Our View:The Titans' secondary is solid, but Cortland Finnegan takes a lot of risks, and the Packers believe they can beat him deep. The Packers are also going to have a tough time running the ball, making the passing game a better option to succeed.
October 31, 2008
Packers.com reports that quarterback Aaron Rodgers (shoulder) was limited in practice on Friday but is expected to start on Sunday against Tennesee.

Our View:Rodgers has a very difficult matchup against Tennessee's number one ranked defense.
October 31, 2008
Aaron Rodgers has inked a long-term deal with the Packers that will keep him with the club through the 2014 season, according to the Packers' official website. GM Ted Thompson said, "As we talked about in the past, we try to be proactive in our discussions with our current players and we felt like this was an appropriate time to try to come to an agreement with Aaron. We feel like this is good for the organization and the players, and we will continue this approach as we move forward." Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View:Rodgers was the Packers' first-round pick in 2005, and is faring very well in his first season as a starter, with 12 touchdown passes over seven games, with a 98.8 efficiency rating.
October 30, 2008
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still limited in his throwing in practice, but he did throw a few from around 20 yards, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Our View:This is the norm for Rodgers lately, and the limited practice time does not seem to be affecting his performances much. He and the rest of the Packers face off against Tennessee this weekend.
October 29, 2008
Aaron Rodgers threw a bit in practice on Wednesday, including some deep passes, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Our View:Rodgers had not been throwing much except shorter tosses, so the fact that he was airing it out a bit is good news. He is still a solid fantasy play, though this week's game against the Titans will be a test, as they have the fourth-ranked pass defense in the NFL.
October 28, 2008
Aaron Rodgers has not returned to his normal practice routine, even while coming off a bye, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Rodgers threw only a few short passes during practice on Monday, and his throwing has been extremely limited since he sprained his right shoulder on September 28 against the Buccaneers. Coach Mike McCarthy said, "If I could get him to throw two days this week, I think that would be probably best. We just have to be smart, but definitely the time off really helped Aaron."

Our View:Rodgers has been solid while playing through the injury, as he threw eight touchdown passes over his last four games. He should remain in fantasy lineups, despite a tough match-up this weekend against the Titans.
October 22, 2008
Aaron Rodgers is hoping to return in Week 9 close to 100 percent health following the Packers' bye, according to the Star Tribune. He said, "I've been looking forward to the bye since I hurt myself in Tampa. I'm not sure how it's going to respond — hopefully positively. It could clear up in the next couple weeks, it could be something I deal with all season. We're just not quite sure yet."

Our View:Rodgers has been rock solid while playing through the shoulder injury, as he fired 12 touchdown passes over seven games, while maintaining a 98.8 efficiency rating. The Packers will have a tough battle against Tennessee in Week 9.
October 20, 2008
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers continues to play through a very sore shoulder, teammates tell the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He was in pain... a lot of pain," wide receiver Ruvell Martin says of their pre-game warm-ups on Sunday. "To the point where he just gave me the 'cut it' sign after about 10 minutes." Tackle Mark Tauscher adds, "He's showing a lot of character and toughness playing with an injury and not making that an issue."

Our View:Rodgers's numbers suggest he is fine, but it sounds like he definitely needs this bye week to rest up. We have to worry that Aaron's arm may never fully heal during this campaign, although he is showing that he can play through it.
October 17, 2008
Aaron Rodgers was a full participant in Friday's practice and should start on Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:Rodgers was still productive over the past two weeks despite a sprained shoulder. He has a 98.0 quarterback rating this season.
October 16, 2008
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that quarterback Aaron Rodgers (right shoulder) threw in several different drills in practice for the first time in weeks. It was apparent he wasn't doing what he normally would do in a practice but he looked to have good zip on the ball and didn't seem to be wincing in pain.

Our View:Rodgers has played well throughout the injury and remains one of the top quarterback options this season. He is carrying a 98.0 quarterback rating.
October 13, 2008
Aaron Rodgers did not suffer any setbacks regarding his shoulder during or after Sunday's game at Seattle, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Coach Mike McCarthy said, "Hopefully, we're moving forward. He's sore again today, which is normal. He'll be dealing with that for some time."

Our View:Rodgers maintains a strong 98.0 efficiency rating, and has not been compromised by the ailment, as he has thrown at least two touchdown passes in each of his last three games, with three coming in Week 5 against Atlanta.
October 12, 2008
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers tossed two touchdowns and ran for one score in the Week 6 win over the Seahawks. He completed 21-of-30 passes for 208 yards and rushed six times for 23 yards.

Our View:For those counting at home, that's four multiple-touchdown games out of the last five contests for Rodgers. He has certainly exceeded our expectations this year and should remain a solid start moving forward.
October 12, 2008
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers (shoulder) will start this week against Seattle.

Our View:Rodgers has a juicy match-up against a the 27th ranked Seattle defense, which is equally poor against the run and pass.
October 10, 2008
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers once again did not throw in practice on Friday, but he will still suit up for the team's Week 6 contest, according to Packers.com.

Our View:The Packers take on the Seahawks and their 26th-ranked pass defense. They are also 24th in the league in opponent's completion percentage, as teams connect on 65 percent of their throws against Seattle.
October 9, 2008
Aaron Rodgers participated in the walkthrough portion of practice for the second straight day Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He did not throw and the plan was for the doctors to evaluate Rodgers after a strenuous rehab workout Wednesday and see whether he was ready to throw today. They decided to wait another day. Rodgers looked loose and excited about being at practice and caught balls from the other quarterbacks during individual drills.

Our View:He looks to be a good bet to start Sunday against Seattle, who field the 25th ranked pass defense.
October 8, 2008
Aaron Rodgers participated in Wednesday's walkthrough and reportedly displayed a "good bounce in his step," according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:He did the throwing motion and then didn't release the ball. He exited for rehab following the walkthrough. He is recovering favorably from his right shoulder ailment, and should be good for go for Week 6 at Seattle.
October 7, 2008
The Packers did not make the decision on Aaron Rodgers playing status until about an hour before the game in Week 5. This week the Packers have said that Rodgers will miss some practice time but is expected to play in Week 6, according to the AP.

Our View:Even with a bum shoulder Rodgers performed well in Week 5. In the Packers loss to the Falcons the quarterback threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns. Even though Rodgers will miss some practice time this week you can expect him to perform well again.
October 6, 2008
Aaron Rodgers (shoulder) performed admirably in Week 5 but due to the injury he will not practice this week until at least Thursday, according to The Sports Network. "I'm not going to practice him Wednesday, and we're going to stay in the rehab," HC Mike McCarthy said. "Then we're looking at potentially limited Thursday was the conversation we had with the doctors, and we'll take it from there."

Our View:Rodgers was seen wincing in pain for most of the outing on Sunday but he still gutted it out for 313 yards and three scores. At this point we still expect him to play in the Packers next contest but it is clear that any hit on game day could force him to the sidelines.
October 5, 2008
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 25-of-37 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns in the Week 5 loss to the Falcons. He also threw an interception.

Our View:Rodgers didn't seem like a good start due to his sore shoulder, but he showed that the joint shouldn't hinder him moving forward.
October 5, 2008
Aaron Rodgers (shoulder) is expected to start in Week 5 against the Falcons, according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.

Our View:Fantasy owners should like the matchup, but we have to worry about Rodgers avoiding re-injury and being able to throw the deep ball.
October 3, 2008
According to the National Football Post, Aaron Rodgers' teammates fully expect him to play this Sunday. He is listed as questionable and will be a game time decision against the Falcons.

Our View:If Rodgers feels ok in warm-ups, he'll play. Even if he does, expect most of the offense to go through Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson.
October 3, 2008
The Green Bay Packers won't know until a little under two hours before game time whether or not quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Rodgers has an injury to his throwing shoulder, and if he cannot go, rookie Matt Flynn would get the call instead.
October 2, 2008
Green Bay signal-caller Aaron Rodgers did not practice on Thursday, and rookies Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm each got work in with the first-team, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Our View:It is doubtful that Rodgers will suit up for the team on Sunday, and in all likelihood, Flynn will get the start. Do not consider him an option in fantasy leagues except in desperate circumstances.
October 2, 2008
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will probably not be able to play on Sunday unless his shoulder makes dramatic improvements the next two days, according to John Clayton of ESPN.com.

Our View:Though rookie seventh-round pick Matt Flynn is sharing snaps in practice with second-round pick Brian Brohm, Flynn will probably be the starter. This would certainly downgrade the fantasy value of receivers like Greg Jennings against the Atlanta Falcons' 13th ranked pass defense.
October 1, 2008
Aaron Rodgers was limited to only four reps in Wednesday's practice while nursing his sprained right shoulder, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:All of his reps were running plays. He intends to play Sunday against Atlanta, but the final decision is not his to make.
September 30, 2008
Aaron Rodgers is dealing with a sprained right shoulder but told coach Mike McCarthy that he intends to play Sunday against Atlanta, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:This is encouraging news but the decision to play is not his, and his status could hinge on Wednesday's practice.
September 29, 2008
Aaron Rodgers may play Sunday against Atlanta despite shoulder pain, according to the AP.

Our View:He intends to play with a sprain, but the team will have a better idea if that is possible following Wednesday's practice. Rookie Matt Flynn will be prepped to start if needed.
September 28, 2008
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will undergo testing on his right shoulder on Sunday night or Monday morning. Rodgers tells the Green Bay Press-Gazette that he thinks he separated his shoulder but isn't sure.

Our View:We should know more within the next day or so. Even if it's a separation, Rodgers won't necessarily miss Week 5.
September 28, 2008
Aaron Rodgers returned to the Week 4 game against the Buccaneers late in the fourth quarter. He previously missed a drive due to a sore shoulder.

Our View:He came back in time to throw his third interception of the day. The positive news is that the injury isn't very serious.
September 28, 2008
Aaron Rodgers suffered a shoulder injury during the third quarter of the Week 4 game against the Buccaneers. The official word is that his return is questionable, but he is throwing the ball on the sidelines.

Our View:It looks like a minor injury, and we wouldn't be surprised if Rodgers was out there on the next drive.
September 21, 2008
Aaron Rodgers threw for 290 yards and ran for a touchdown in Sunday night's loss to the Cowboys. He hit Greg Jennings eight times for 115 yards.

Our View:He did most of his damage late when the team was already out of the game. Just as important for Rodgers, he did not commit any turnovers. He continues to be one of the performing quarterbacks early on in 2008.
September 14, 2008
Aaron Rodgers had a monster effort for the Cheeseheads Sunday, completing 24-of-38 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Detroit. He also had 25 rushing yards but lost a fumble.

Our View:Rodgers has faced two poor pass defenses so far, but you still have to be encouraged with his play so far.
September 8, 2008
Aaron Rodgers completed 18-of-22 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. He added 35 yards rushing and a game-clinching rushing score, as the Packers beat the Vikings 24-19.

Our View:Rodgers looked solid in his debut. He could end up being a great draft-day value as he has very capable receivers in Greg Jennings and Donald Driver.
September 2, 2008
Packers coach Mike McCarthy has said that he will not be going after a veteran quarterback to back up starter Aaron Rodgers, and Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm are the guys, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "I’m not thinking about it. I’m thinking about getting these two young men ready to play," McCarthy said.

Our View:It is quite a leap of faith to give two rookies that responsibility, especially since the top backup at the position was a seventh-round pick just months ago.
August 27, 2008
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has hired a new agent, David Dunn of Athletes First, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Our View:Rodgers will be a free agent in 2009, and should he prove to be a quality quarterback in the NFL, could be in line for a hefty raise.
August 24, 2008
Though many teams hold their starters out of the final preseason game, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play a series or two, according to Packers.com.

Our View:Rodgers had a solid game in the third contest, but still needs to build a rapport with his receivers, thus the extra work.
August 22, 2008
Aaron Rodgers was on point for the Packers, completing 18-of-22 passes, an 81 percent clip, for 193 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in a 27-23 win over Denver.

Our View:Brett who? Okay, maybe not, but Green Bay fans should be encouraged that Rodgers had such a strong game, as should fantasy owners looking at Rodgers as a backup.
August 17, 2008
The smooth travels for Aaron Rodgers came to an end on Saturday night, completing nine of 16 passes for 58 yards and sacked four times by San Francisco in a devastating 34-6 loss, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. San Francisco’s complex defense, which regularly shifts from a 3-4 front to a 4-3 front in an attempt to create indecision in blocking assignments, got the upper hand on Rodgers. According to offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Rodgers audibled out of a number of running plays. Often he found nothing downfield. His hesitation made him look like a backup quarterback who hadn’t played in a long time and often he read the pass rush incorrectly, thinking he had time to pump and reload when he didn’t.

Our View:Rodgers didn’t have very good protection, his receivers were dropping balls and running poor routes and there was no running game to speak of to slow down the 49ers’ pass rush. It serves as a reminder that bumps will come in this road, and while Rodgers has impressed thus far, there will be times when he does not. Temper expectations and you won't get stung.
August 11, 2008
Aaron Rodgers was 9-for-15 for 117 yards, a TD and an interception at his time at the helm of the Packers offense on Monday night.

Our View:Rodgers looked great on the night and seemed very composed in the pocket leading the Packers to 10 points. This effort will likely cause his star to rise in fantasy circles.
August 9, 2008
Here in fantasy sports land, we care far more about the numbers players produced than the numbers on their jerseys. But that is certainly not true in the case of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is taking a lot of heat from fans, including being cursed at by children, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. I'm driving up to the (parking lot) gate and punching in my punch code and somebody says ‘F.U.' to me. That kind of bothers me. Or when a little kid is yelling swear words at me. That kind of gets to me. The boos, they expect a high level of play and they miss Brett Favre. I understand that. But the ‘F.U.' and the little kids saying swear words to me, I don't understand that," Rodgers said.

Our View:Well that's classy. Rodgers doesn't deserve the heat he is taking, as he had nothing to do with the Brett Favre - Green Bay breakup. He was simply drafted by the team. That said, he is a good backup in fantasy terms and has the potential to be more.
August 8, 2008
Aaron Rodgers was sharp in Friday's morning practice, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He was 10-of-15 with two touchdowns, and was 6-of-8 on his two-minute drive. Greg Jennings made an incredible one-handed grab for a touchdown to end practice. Rodgers had scrambled on the play, and then zipped a ball in late and a little high to Jennings, but he made it work.

Our View:Rodgers ranks as a solid No. 2 fantasy quarterback, with upside to be a favorable starter.
August 8, 2008
Aaron Rodgers has fired his agent, Mike Sullivan, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Sullivan said, "Aaron has decided to go in a different direction as far as an agent. While I am disappointed with his decision, I wish him the best."

Our View:Sullivan has represented Rodgers since he was drafted in 2005, and no reason was disclosed as to why Rodgers fired him.
August 6, 2008
Aaron Rodgers threw an interception to Nick Collins Wednesday, but overall he had his best day of camp so far, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He looked calm and confident in 11-on-11 drills, especially through the no huddle portion.

Our View:Rodgers has held up well during the whole Brett Favre situation, and should be less of a distraction as Favre is seemingly close to being shipped out of Green Bay.
August 1, 2008
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has performed well so far in training camp, and the Packers are happy with his progress, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He's protecting the ball. He's throwing the ball well. He's handling the offense. He's checking plays," said offensive coordinator Joe Philbin.

Our View:Either way, the Packers weren't going to come out and say he was struggling, not with The Brett Favre Situation still simmering. Make no mistake, the Packers will do everything in their power to help Rodgers succeed.
July 27, 2008
Coach Mike McCarthy reiterated that Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback of the Packers, according to the AP. McCarthy stated, "Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. That's been stated over and over again. I hope we can finally understand that. That's where we are as an organization and as a head coach of the Green Bay Packers." When asked if Brett Favre had a chance to overake him for the spot, McCarthy noted, "it’s more complicated than that."

Our View:Brett Favre did not file to be reinstated at the close of the business day Saturday, according to an NFL spokesman, and cannot report to camp with the Packers until he does. The first practice of camp is scheduled for Monday, and McCarthy is going to address the Favre situation with the entire team.
July 13, 2008
Aaron Rodgers did an interview with MSNBC.com and said he would welcome Brett Favre back, and was not concerned with things outside of his control.

Our View:The Favre drama is dominating websites, blogs and major media football news. Until training camp begins expect it to be the only worthwhile NFL topic.
July 12, 2008
Packers' GM Ted Thompson stated that Aaron Rodgers is the Packers' starting quarterback, and Brett Favre will have to hold the clipboard if he is on the team this season, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Thompson added, "We have to go with what's real. We don't know what the options are right now. We'll talk about it internally. It's all guess work. This is a very difficult spot we're in. It's a very volatile situation and we don't have all the answers yet. We have moved forward with Rodgers. So we'll see where it goes."

Our View:The Packers previously stated Favre will not be released, but they would consider a trade. As of now, Rodgers is slated to start the season opener against the Vikings.
July 9, 2008
Aaron Rodgers is not distracted by the news swirling that Brett Favre wants to return to the NFL, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He has not talked to Favre and said, "I’ve been up in the mountains hanging out with my family, so I’ve been pretty immune to any media reports out there. So, that’s basically what I’m doing."

Our View:In other words, Rodgers is preparing himself to be the Packers' starting quarterback this season and isn't changing anything in that regard.
June 19, 2008
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has set himself aside as the team leader this offseason, and he has displayed a strong throwing arm in practices, according to ESPN. "He has a cannon," wide receiver Greg Jennings said. "We call him the Human Jugs Machine."

Our View:Aside from the strong arm, it will be interesting to watch how Rodgers evolves as a leader of the team, while trying to fill Brett Favre’s enormous shoes. We currently have Rodgers ranked as a mid-level backup in our early fantasy rankings. But we will be tracking his progress throughout training camp and the preseason games, so that ranking could be fluid in nature.
May 22, 2008
Aaron Rodgers said he is ready for the spotlight following the retirement of future Hall of Famer Brett Favre, according to the AP. He commented, "I know the pressure I’m under. I know who I’m following. I know that it’s a tough situation and a lot of people are expecting me to fail outside of this locker room. I’m just trying to get the guys we’ve got here now to believe in me. I know the comparisons, probably my entire career, as long as I’m a Packer and as long as I play in the NFL, my connection will be the guy who followed Brett Favre. I think that’s probably one of the most underestimated parts of my game is that I have spent the last three offseasons exclusively here and I’ve put in a lot of time and a lot of hard work into figuring out this offense. I think I’ll be ready to go once we can finally lace them up for real. I think I’ve always been a guy who wants to be involved not only in working together but be involved in the lives of these guys. I want us to be a connected team, on and off the field."

Our View:Packers' coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers keeps doing everything right, and added that Rodgers will be the starter despite drafting Brian Brohm in the second round.
May 5, 2008
Head coach Mike McCarthy will adjust the offense to mesh with quarterback Aaron Rodgers' strengths and weaknesses as they become more apparent; however, he suggested the changes will be relatively minor, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. His comments about Rodgers' athleticism suggest he might run more bootleg-type passes than he did with Favre. Also, drafting Jordy Nelson with the top pick suggests the spread passing attack with four and five receivers will remain a staple in the offense to take advantage of the team's best playmakers in Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones and, perhaps now, Nelson. "(The spread personnel) is not the starting point of our offense," McCarthy said. "But we definitely have the players to do that, and it takes advantage of the strength of our perimeter players, because it puts the ball in their hands quickly and gives them the ability to make yards after the catch."

Our View:Whether the scheme changes are minor or not, Rodgers has a steep hill to climb in replacing Favre, who is a first ballot Hall of Famer and a legendary figure in Green Bay.
April 27, 2008
With Brett Favre riding off into the sunset, the Green Bay Packers hit this year's NFL Draft noting their offensive needs and wasted no time in addressing the situation, using their top two picks to bolster their efforts to score points. With the 5th pick in the 2nd round, the Packers drafted Kansas State WR Jordy Nelson and followed that selection by taking Louisville QB Brian Brohm later in the round (the 25th pick of the 2nd round).

Our View:While the addition of Brohm is going to garner great attention (and rightfully so, adding a talented and intelligent play caller to compete with Aaron Rodgers, the Packers' 1st-round pick from '05), the decision to add Nelson may be one of the more underrated additions of the draft. Nelson doesn't possess outstanding speed, but he worked as one of the most productive receivers in college football last season. He's an excellent route runner, he has outstanding hands, and his technique is advanced for a player of his experience. With Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, and James Jones all on hand working as speedy deep threats to spread the field, it would not be surprising to see Nelson emerge as the team's potent slot receiver, eating up mid-range passes that will be crucial for these inexperienced passers.
April 24, 2008
At a time when plenty of teams are rumored to be interested in trading up in the draft, the Green Bay Packers are believed to be hoping to move down, in order to pick up extra picks, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View:Green Bay has the 30th overall selection in the first round, and there are rumors circulating that a handful of undisclosed teams might be interested in trading back into the first round, to select a quarterback.
April 22, 2008
Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson won't pass up a worthwhile passer in this weekend's NFL draft. And if the Packers end up taking a quarterback with the 30th pick in the first round, Thompson said it shouldn't be interpreted as a lack of confidence in new starter Aaron Rodgers, according to ESPN. "If we take a player at any other position, it's no slight on the players that we have at those positions," Thompson said in his pre-draft news conference Monday. "Aaron, he's comfortable in his own skin. He understands the NFL is the NFL."

Our View:The Packers depth chart behind Rodgers is barren wasteland. We fully expect them to select a quarterback in the draft, to not only provide depth, but also a backup plan in case Rodgers is unable to fill the large shoes of Favre.
April 2, 2008
Mike McCarthy acknowledged that rather than bringing in an aging veteran to backup Aaron Rodgers, he could acquire his backup through the draft, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I'm not opposed to it," McCarthy said. "To me, it's experience or talent. I've always developed quarterbacks leaning toward the talent. Youth has never scared me away." The Packers have a pick at the end of the first round (No. 30) and a pair of seconds (Nos. 56 and 60) with which to consider a quarterback and they could come away with someone to both back up and challenge Rodgers. Some of the candidates are Brian Brohm, Joe Flacco, Chad Henne, John David Booty and Andre Woodson.
April 1, 2008
Among the rumors circulating at the owners’ meetings was the Green Bay Packers' apparent interest in veteran quarterbacks A.J. Feeley of the Philadelphia Eagles and J.P. Losman of the Buffalo Bills, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The Packers definitely have a need with only Dalton Bell on the depth chart behind Aaron Rodgers.
April 1, 2008
The Green Bay Packers were awarded a fourth-round draft pick (135th overall) when the league handed out its compensatory picks at the NFL annual owners meetings, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The compensatory pick is based on the Packers’ net losses in free agency the previous year. Last season, Green Bay lost running back Ahman Green and tight end David Martin and signed cornerback Frank Walker. The additional selection gives Green Bay eight picks in the April 26-27 draft. They have a pick in every round except the sixth — plus an extra pick in the second and fourth rounds.

Having overseen a turnaround from a 4-12 record in 2005 to a 13-3 mark in 2007 and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson was named the George Young NFL Executive of the Year by The Sporting News, according to Packers.com. "I'm honored to receive this award on behalf of the Green Bay Packers," Thompson said. "We view this as a team honor and feel the coaches, players and staff should all be very proud of the job they've done in helping this franchise succeed. This award is a credit to their dedication and is particularly special because it's named for George Young, who was a tremendous champion for the NFL and a person I greatly admired." Thompson becomes the second member in the history of the organization to receive the honor, joining former GM Ron Wolf, who was recognized following the 1992 season and who, coincidentally, hired Thompson that year as the former linebacker entered an NFL front office for the first time.

The Green Bay Packers' brain trust believes that former first-round draft pick Aaron Rodgers is more than ready to step into the spotlight now that Brett Favre has finally retired, but there are concerns about his ability to withstand punishment, according to Pro Football Weekly. Despite only taking 59 career snaps, Rodgers has been sidelined on two different occasions with a broken foot and a pulled hamstring. With Craig Nall as the only other option under center, the team has been rumored to be looking at numerous options at backup quarterback including Quinn Gray, Mark Brunell and Gus Frerotte. It’s also possible that the organization might burn a first day draft pick on a quarterback to round out the depth chart.

Aaron Rodgers is expected to make a smooth transition as he takes over as the Packers starting quarterback, as believed by quarterbacks coach Tom Clemens who stated, "Aaron wants to play, so I am sure he is excited about that. I am not going to say anything magical to him. He knows he has to get ready because he is now the guy, and we'll move forward. He is going into his fourth year and I think he is up for the challenge". Rodgers himself mentioned that you can't replace a legend, and all he can do is try to be the best quarterback he can be, this according to PackersNews.com.
