Pro Football Weekly reports Alex Smith (shoulder) should be ready to start throwing next month and will likely participate in spring minicamp.

Our View:Considering his big pending payday, Smith seems unlikely to stick with the 49ers.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that quarterback Alex Smith (shoulder) has yet to throw a football since undergoing surgery before the season, but he expects to be ready for spring drills.

Our View:Whether he is or is not, it's unlikely he will be making $9.6 million from the 49ers. Expect Smith to find a new home in the offseason.

Alex Smith may return to the 49ers in 2009 as the club is yet to rule out the possibility, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

Our View:Smith is slated to make $9.625 million next season, so he would likely have to agree to terminate that contract to remain with the club. He will miss the remainder of this season while recovering from surgery to repair a fractured bone in his throwing shoulder. Smith has failed to live up to high expecatations as a No. 1 overall draft pick, and would likely be best suited by moving on with a fresh start with a new team.

The Sacramento Bee reports that quarterback Alex Smith had surgery in Birmingham, AL on Thursday to remove a small piece of bone from his throwing shoulder that broke just before the start of the regular season.

Our View:Smith orginally injured the shoulder on Sept. 30, 2007 when he suffered a Grade 3 separation after being driven into the ground. His status with the 49ers next season is up in the air as he carries a huge contract and has been largely ineffecive for most of his career.
September 28, 2008
PressDemocrat.com reports Smith's shoulder injury is progressing well, and he won't require surgery to insert a screw. He could have surgery to remove wire sutures that were inserted last December, however.

Our View:Smith is out for the 2008 season and may not return to the 49ers next season due to his high salary.
