Player Notes
December 30, 2008
The Texans have fired defensive coordinator Richard Smith, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The Texans' defense finished the season ranked 22nd in the NFL, allowing more than 336 yards a game. They ranked among the worst in the league while allowing 24.6 points per game as well.
December 28, 2008
Quarterback Matt Schaub completed 27-of-36 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 17 win over the Bears.

Our View:Schaub showed off top-five fantasy quarterback potential this season, but for the second straight year, he was held to only 11 games due to injuries. His medical dossier could keep him out of top-10 lists entering 2009.
December 7, 2008
Matt Schaub completed 28-of-42 passes for 414 yards with two touchdowns against one interception in the Week 14 victory over Green Bay.

Our View:Schaub, who missed the past month with a knee injury, has thrown multiple touchdowns in three of the last four games that he has played in. Next up the Texans host the Titans in Week 15.
December 7, 2008
Quarterback Matt Schaub (knee) is active and will start in Week 14 at Green Bay.

Our View:Scahub, who has missed the last four games, could be a risky play against a quality Packers' secondary in his first game back in a month.
December 5, 2008
Packers.com reports that Houston quarterback Matt Schaub (knee) participated fully for the third straight day and is listed as probable. He is expected to make his first start since sustaining the injury November 2 at Minnesota.

Our View:Backup Sage Rosenfels has not filled in nearly as admirably as last season, so this is good news for Houston. Regarless, Schaub is not a particularly strong play against a Packers' secondary that is among the best in the league.
December 4, 2008
Offensive tackle Eric Winston noted that Matt Schaub is looking good in practice this week, according to the Houston Chronicle. Winston said, "He looks like the same old Matt. He's fine. He really looks good. Other than that brace he’s wearing now, he looks the same running, the same speed. He’s throwing the ball well. He’s moving around, same command in the huddle. He’ll be fine." He had been recovering from a knee injury.

Our View:This is encouraging news as Schaub gets set to return to the gridiron as the Texans' starting quarterback Sunday against a tough Packers' secondary at Lambeau Field.
December 2, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Matt Schaub is expected to start on Sunday barring any setbacks, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The Packers' defense has given up 86 points in their last two games and the Texans' top receiver Andre Johnson isn't slowing down, so Schaub could be a decent fantasy player this week.
December 2, 2008
Matt Schaub, who served as the No. 2 quarterback behind Sage Rosenfels Monday night against the Jaguars, could return to the starting lineup in Week 14, according to the Houston Chronicle. Schaub had been recovering from a knee injury.

Our View:Schaub held a solid 91.0 efficiency rating as the Texans' starter this season, and should resume his role with a favorable week of practice. He would draw a tough assignment in his first game back though, as the Texans play the Packers at Lambeau Field.
November 29, 2008
Matt Schaub practiced on Saturday, taking the scout team snaps, and he could be the team's No. 2 quarterback on Monday night, according to HoustonTexans.com.

Our View:Schaub is still about a week away from returning to start. Sage Rosenfels will get the nod behind center once again.
November 28, 2008
Matt Schaub (MCL) handled an increased workload on Friday and there is still a chance he might play on Monday night, according to the Texans Official Website. “I think there’s a chance (that Schaub will play), but I think we’ve got to be smart and know that he can go out there and do all of the things he can do on a normal basis,” Kubiak said.

Our View:The club really should err on the side of caution here with Schaub which means he likely wont play in Week 13. At this point, we would wager that it will be Sage Rosenfels facing the Jaguars.
November 26, 2008
Texans quarterback Matt Schaub is day-to-day, and the possibility remains that he could play this weekend, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Schaub has missed time due to an injury to his MCL. He did some things in practice on Wednesday and will do more the rest of the week.
November 23, 2008
Texans inactives: QB Matt Schaub, FB Cecil Sapp, FS Will Demps, LB Kevis Coley, G Kasey Studdard, OT Rashad Butler, TE Mark Bruener, DT Frank Okam.

Our View:Matt Schaub remains out, and Sage Rosenfels is starting at quarterback.
November 18, 2008
Matt Schaub could begin throwing sometime this week, according to the Texans' official site.

Our View:Schaub probably won't have much fantasy value the rest of the year. He'll probably at most only be able to play Houston's last two games.
November 17, 2008
The AP reports that Texans quarterback Matt Schaub's recovery from a left knee injury will take longer than the two to four weeks initially projected. He has been out two weeks with an injured medial collateral ligament and coach Gary Kubiak was far more candid Monday about his condition than he has been since the injury. Kubiak said it could be another four weeks.

Our View:Sage Rosenfels will remain the starter and it is certainly worth considering shedding Schaub from your roster if you have not already.
November 16, 2008
Texans inactives: QB Matt Schaub, WR Andre Davis, LB Kevis Coley, LB Morlon Greenwood, G Kasey Studdard, T Rashad Butler, TE Mark Bruener, DT Amobi Okoye.

Our View:Sage Rosenfels gets the start for the second straight week in place of Matt Schaub, who is inactive due to a knee injury.
November 14, 2008
Matt Schaub is slowly recovering from a torn MCL in his left knee, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:He is making progress, but the Texans are unsure if he will be able to make the trip for Sunday's game at Indianapolis. The team wants to be sure he doesn't have swelling or other problems before he takes a flight. The team does not believe they will know a lot regarding his condition for at least another week or two. Sage Rosenfels will make another start at quarterback in his place.
November 12, 2008
The Texans' website reports that Matt Schaub will undergo tests later this week to determine his health. “He (Schaub) has definitely moved forward,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “The question right now is whether or not we’re going to take him on the trip this week or not, whether they feel good about him flying, where they don’t think there will be any problems - swelling or anything."

Our View:Schaub will not be returning this weekend and Sage Rosenfels will continue to start.
November 9, 2008
Week 10 inactives: QB Matt Schaub, WR Andre Davis, S Will Demps, LB Chaun Thompson, G Kasey Studdard, OT Rashad Butler, TE Mark Bruener, DT Amobi Okoye.

Our View:Sage Rosenfels will start at quarterback. Ahman Green is active and will be the backup to Steve Slaton. The defense will miss Okoye, but DeMeco Ryans is active.
November 3, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Matt Schaub has sustained a torn MCL in his left knee during Sunday's game against Minnesota, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:He will miss at least a month, hence boosting the fantasy value of Sage Rosenfels, who will replace him at quarterback.
November 3, 2008
Matt Schaub is slated for an MRI on his injured knee, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:The injury was initially reported to be a sprain, but the team feels it may only be a bruise. We will keep you posted on his status. Sage Rosenfels would start at quarterback against the Ravens in Week 10 if Schaub is unable to go.
November 2, 2008
Quarterback Matt Schaub exited the game against Minnesota in the third quarter with a knee injury.

Our View:Sage Rosenfels has replaced him in the lineup. No additional information is currently available
October 26, 2008
Quarterback Matt Schaub completed 24-of-28 passes for 280 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks in the Week 8 win over the Bengals.

Our View:Schaub has really picked up his play since Week 3. He is clicking with Andre Johnson (and others), and it helps that Steve Slaton and Ahman Green make defenses honor the ground game. Schaub currently looks like an every-week fantasy starter.
October 19, 2008
Matt Schaub was 26-for-31 with 267 yards and touchdown in the Texans 28-21 win over the Lions.

Our View:Schaub has now thrown six touchdowns on the year to go along with seven interceptions. The Texans QB and Andre Johnson have started to click again just like in 2007. In Week 7 Johnson and Schaub connected on 11 passes for 141 yards.
October 12, 2008
Matt Schaub rebounded from two early interceptions to complete 22-of-42 passes for 379 yards and a touchdown during the Texans' 29-28 win over Miami on Sunday. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Our View:The Sage Rosenfels whispers can remain quiet for another week. Schaub now has two consecutive 300-yard passing games.
October 7, 2008
Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who missed the team's Week 5 game due to illness, should be at practice on Wednesday and start on Sunday, according to the Houston Chronicle. "Matt’s still a little weak, but he should be fine," coach Gary Kubiak said.

Our View:This comes a week after Sage Rosenfels almost single-handedly gave the game away to the Colts, foolishly making a diving attempt at a first down and getting spun like a top while losing the ball. Indy recovered and scored on the play. Rosenfels was stripped of the ball the very next series, leading to another Colts' score.
October 5, 2008
According to ESPN's Jim Mortensen, quarterback Matt Schaub is sick and will not start this week against Indianapolis.

Our View:Sage Rosenfels will take his place in the starting lineup. Schaub is still active, but has a stomach virus.
September 28, 2008
Quarterback Matt Schaub completed 29-of-40 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions in the Week 4 loss to Jacksonville.

Our View:Prior to this effort, Schaub was on the hotseat with one touchdown against five interceptions in the previous two games. Despite the early struggles, we remain bullish on the Texans passing game, as they have the next four games at home, including contests against Miami, Detroit and Cincinnati.
September 22, 2008
Matt Schaub will remain the Texans starter in Week 4 despite some awful work thus far, according to the Houston Chroncicle.

Our View:This call isn't really all that surprising, though Schaub will need to do much better than one passing score and five interceptions if he wants to remain at the helm of the offense moving forward. Sage Rosenfels is warming up in the bullpen to borrow a baseball saying.
September 22, 2008
Matt Schaub was sacked three times in Sunday's loss against the Titans, pushing his season total to eight (over two games), according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Schaub was only sacked 16 times over 11 starts in 2007. He is not getting sufficient time to release the ball and analyze his targets, which has resulted in five interceptions and a dismal 50.3 efficiency rating over two games. Things don't look to get better in Week 4 with a tough road trip to Jacksonville, who are coming off a big win over the Colts.
September 16, 2008
Should Reliant Stadium not be available for the Houston Texans to play in when their first home game comes October 5, the team is considering playing at Rice Stadium, according to the AP.

Our View:Rice Stadium is just four miles away from Reliant, which is one positive to the situation. Part of Reliant's roof came off, and the team is not sure if it will be repaired in time for the team's game.
September 13, 2008
The game between the Ravens and Texans has been rescheduled for November 9 due to severe damage sustained to Reliant Stadium by Hurricane Ike, according to the AP.

Our View:Ike tore chunks off the stadium’s retractable roof and the damage couldn’t be fixed in time for the game. Houston was originally scheduled to play the Bengals on November 9. Now, those teams will play on October 26 and Cincinnati will take its bye week on November 9, when the Texans now play the Ravens. Baltimore had an open date on November 9 on its original schedule. Be sure to remove all Texans and Ravens from your Week 2 lineup.
September 8, 2008
Coach Gary Kubiak said he considered pulling Matt Schaub for Sage Rosenfels, but only because Schaub took a hard hit on a sack, which was one of five racked up by the Steelers' defense, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Schaub completed 25-of-33 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown, but had two interceptions in the 38-17 loss. The Texans don't catch a break with a lighter match-up in Week 2 as they face the imposing Ravens, who shut down the Bengals Sunday.
September 5, 2008
Matt Schaub commented on Sunday's opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to the Houston Chronicle. Schaub said, "This is one of those games that you basically have eight months to prepare for. You start watching this opponent early on in the offseason and you really get into depth into what they do. Again, it’s the first game. You can look at players all you want, but they could come out with something totally new and totally different. You always have to diagnose what they are doing early and be able to attack those things."

Our View:Schaub is expected to serve as a solid No. 2 fantasy quarterback this season, and a solid performance against an imposing Steelers' defense will help solidify that belief.
August 22, 2008
Matt Schaub had a solid game against the Cowboys, throwing 27 passes and completing 15 of them for 166 yards and a touchdown, but Houston was still downed by Dallas, 23-22.

Our View:Schaub will not single-handedly lead fantasy owners to a championship, but he can be a reliable second QB, especially with Andre Johnson healthy.
August 16, 2008
Matt Schaub torched the Saints secondary in the second round of preseason games. He completed 14-of-16 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. One of his incompletions was a drop by Andre Davis.

Our View:Schaub did his best to show-up Drew Brees, who was nearly as efficient. We continue to like Schaub as a solid No. 2 fantasy quarterback
May 9, 2008
Matt Schaub, who is recovering from surgery on his left shoulder, will participate fully during minicamp, according to the Houston Chronicle. Coach Gary Kubiak said he will be able to do everything in their weekend minicamp.

Our View:His rehab is going favorably. Schaub fired nine touchdown passes over 11 games last season, and the Texans' success in 2008 will depend on his recovery.
April 24, 2008
Even though the Houston Texans are slated to make their first selection at No. 18, the organization isn’t overly attached to that slot, according to the Houston Chronicle. With the NFL draft just two days away, general manager Rick Smith has already started making phone calls. "Certainly we're confident that we're going to get a good player at the 18th pick, but if there is an opportunity for us to move backwards and acquire additional picks I think you've got to entertain that," Smith said. "I think what happens is as the board starts to fall and you start to evaluate the players that are on the board, if there is a player that you feel like can make a significant difference with your club I think you've got to take it. If that's not the case, I think you have to entertain moving back.”

Our View:The Texans have several holes to fill, and are interested in acquiring more picks since they have only five.
April 2, 2008
Houston general manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak expect to get a starter with the 18th overall pick in the first round, according to the Houston Chronicle. "We can't miss on this player, we've got a lot of needs," Kubiak said. "We need a left tackle, a cornerback, a running back and another pass rusher. We can't say we're not taking any position." Heading into the draft it was thought that cornerback was the Texans’ biggest area of need, but reading between the lines it appears they might take the best player available at a position of need with the 18th overall pick.
March 28, 2008
Matt Schaub, recovering from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, will throw passes to receivers during the Texans' offseason program, according to the Houston Chroncle. "I'm close to having my full range of motion back. I just need to keep getting my muscles stronger," said Schaub. "We're moving right along." Even though Sage Rosenfels won four of his five starts while filling in for Schaub last season, coach Gary Kubiak has made it clear that Schaub is his starter.
March 20, 2008
Matt Schaub could be slightly limited when the Houston Texans conditioning program starts on March 31, according to the Houston Chronicle. Schaub’s shoulder is healing well, and the Texans are not expecting him to be slowed for long. Schaub almost has his full range of motion back, and is able to throw to receivers right now, but the non-throwing surgically repaired shoulder isn’t strong enough to take a hit yet.
January 14, 2008
Matt Schaub recently underwent surgery to repair his dislocated shoulder. He's expected to require 2-3 months to recover, according to the Houston Chronicle. Barring any setbacks, Schaub should be fully healed in time for the Texans' OTAs.
