Antonio Gates had just one catch, for 24 yards, in Monday's win over the Broncos. He was covered fairly well for the first half of the game, then played just part of the second half as the Chargers removed several of their starters early. It's the third time in four weeks Gates has finished a ballgame with just one reception.

Antonio Gates again did not practice on Thursday due to his sore back. "Antonio's a lot better today than he was yesterday and I would hope he can do parts of practice tomorrow," coach Norv Turner told the AP. "He's getting a lot better. If he progresses the way he has over the last two days, then I think he'll be all right." Barring a setback, Gates should be on the field for Week 15.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers may rely even more on his top receiving target this year, Antonio Gates. "With a year under my belt it can be more of an understanding," Rivers tells the San Diego Union-Tribune. "A couple times (last season) I came off him too soon, trying to be too careful, play by the textbook. I could have maybe cut loose a couple times. He could have caught it. That comes with experience." Gates has come into camp a few pounds leaner and more muscular, and head coach Norv Turner has designed more routes for the dynamic tight end.
