Player Notes
November 15, 2008
If Antonio Gates can reach the endzone Sunday at Pittsburgh, he would become the fastest tight end to score 50 touchdowns, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Gates has 49 touchdowns through 86 career games, and the current fastest to 50 is former Redskins' tight end Jerry Smith, who took 100 games to reach the milestone. It took Tony Gonzalez 118 games to reach 50.
November 9, 2008
Antonio Gates reached the end zone for the sixth time on the year in Sunday's 20-19 win over the Chiefs.

Our View:Gates caught eight passes for 66 yards and it looks like he is almost back to 100%.
October 27, 2008
Antonio Gates said that he felt "great" during the Chargers' week 8 loss to the Saints in London, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Gates owners should start seeing his production back to normal levels again. Make sure he's in your lineup for the rest of the season after next week's bye.
October 26, 2008
Tight end Antonio Gates caught six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown in the Week 8 loss to the Saints. Along with season highs in catches and yards, the outing included a season-long 30-yard catch.

Our View:Gates hasn't had a dynamic first half of the season, but he has scored five times and this outing bodes well for a stronger second half.
October 12, 2008
Tight end Antonio Gates caught four passes for 35 yards and a touchdown in the Week 6 win over the Patriots. He also dropped a likely touchdown early in the first quarter.

Our View:Gates has scored in four of the six games, but he has yet to produce more than 61 yards in any contest. He has been battling injuries, and we're hoping he will start to rack up more catches and yards as his toe and hip feel better.
October 5, 2008
Antonio Gates had only one catch for 12 yards in the Chargers loss to the Dolphins. The superstar tight end told the San Diego Union-Tribune that a hip stinger greatly affected his ability to get open.

Our View:Gates has been battling injuries all season but has visited the end zone three times in five games. Throughout the week you can expect Gates to miss some practice time but will most likely be able to play.
October 5, 2008
Tight end Antonio Gates is active and will start against Miami.

Our View:This was expected as Gates (hip) was probable on the injury report and praticed fully this week.
October 2, 2008
Antonio Gates returned to a full practice Thursday, according to the Chargers' official website. He did not participate Wednesday while nursing his hip ailment.

Our View:He should be ready to start Sunday against the Dolphins. He only caught four passes over the first four weeks, but scored three touchdowns.
October 1, 2008
Antonio Gates was listed on the Chargers injury report on Wednesday after he didn't practice due to his hip, according to Chargers.com.

Our View:Gates yardage has been down in the first four games but he has visited the end zone already three times.
September 28, 2008
Antonio Gates caught five passes for 58 yards and his third touchdown pass in four games on Sunday.

Our View:Gates has not been a superstar this season, but he has been very consistent for fantasy owners with significant production each week.
September 25, 2008
More good news came from the Chargers today as Antonio Gates went through a whole practice, according to the AP.

Our View:Gates has not had the yardage (147) that fantasy owners are used to but he has already visited the end zone twice in three games.
September 15, 2008
Antonio Gates played sparingly in Sunday's loss to Denver as he continues to recover from his hip ailment, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:He was also seen wearing only a sandal on his left foot, which could be an indication he is still bothered by his toe. Over two games, he racked up eight receptions for 122 yards and a score.
September 10, 2008
For the last couple of years it seems like you can always find Antonio Gates' name on the injury report. This week Gates was limited in practice due to a nagging hip injury, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Gates is on the injury report a lot but it sure seems like he always finds the field and the end zone.
September 9, 2008
Antonio Gates is still recovering from his toe ailment, but intends to play in Week 2 against the division rival Broncos, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The elite tight end said, "I don't plan on being 100 percent. The toe has progressed. The more I run on it, the better it becomes. The hip is sore, but that's how you feel after a game."

Our View:Fantasy owners didn't draft Gates to sit on the bench, so he should be active in all lineups against Denver. The Broncos held tight end Zach Miller in check in Week 1, but he is not in the same class as Gates.
September 7, 2008
Antonio Gates, who was limited on Sunday as he continues to recover from a foot injury, caught a touchdown pass and recorded 61 receiving yards.

Our View:Gates, even in a part-time role, was the leading receiver for the Chargers.
September 7, 2008
Antonio Gates left the season opener in the first half due to a bruised hip. He headed to the locker room but is expected to return.

Our View:Initial reports make this ailment sound minor, and we'll follow up when more information becomes available. He currently has two catches for 30 yards.
September 7, 2008
Tight end Antonio Gates (toe) is active and is expected to start in the season opener.

Our View:This news just confirms what we already expected. Fantasy owners can feel free to use the dynamic tight end.
September 5, 2008
Contrary to earlier reports Antonio Gates should be ready to go in week one despite his bum foot. Though he is officially considered probable he practiced fully at the end of the week.
September 4, 2008
Despite practicing fully this week, Antonio Gates will be limited in the Chargers regular season opener, and will not start the game, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Gates is an elite tight end, but with him being limited Week 1 you should look for another option.
September 3, 2008
Antonio Gates went through a full practice on Wednesday, according to chargers.com.

Our View:This is all but confirmation that Gates will be ready to start in Week 1. If he plays, Gates is a must start.
August 22, 2008
Antonio Gates participated in his first full workout Thursday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He said, "I was rusty; I hadn't had any contact since last January. But I was excited to be out there. I had been anxious to get back out there, so it felt good."

Our View:The Chargers feel he will be ready for Week 1, and this news further solidifies that belief. Gates should be drafted as an elite tight end.
August 19, 2008
Antonio Gates was taken off the PUP list on Tuesday and worked individual drills during practice. "It’s another step forward," Gates tells the team's official web site. "Hopefully I’ll work my way back in there. I’m glad to be back practicing with my teammates and now you just hope things continue to go well." He is not expected to play in either of the final two preseason games. Gates is coming off surgery to repair his big left toe.

Our View:As the man says, it's another step in the right direction. The Chargers continue to suggest that Gates will be ready for Week 1, and this report only helps that claim.
August 17, 2008
Antonio Gates, who is recovering from a surgically repaired toe, ran about 20 routes before the Chargers preseason game against the Rams and is feeling closer to normal again, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. quarterback Philip Rivers said, "He looked really good. That's encouraging for us."

Our View:Gates ran short and deep routes, and at full speed, and came in and out of breaks very well. He walked off the field without a limp and less-than-usual discomfort afterward. This is encouraging news, and Gates should be drafted as the No. 1 fantasy tight end. Even if he gets off to a slow start early in the year, he should still generate strong numbers over the course of the season to justify his ranking.
August 15, 2008
Antonio Gates is still experiencing pain in his surgically repaired toe, but he has no intention of still being on the PUP list once the season has begun, according to the North County Times. "I refuse to be on that thing, man," Gates said. "I wouldn't imagine they would put me on it, based on the running I've been doing and the cutting I've been doing. I can feel some changes, but whether or not I can do it to the ability I need to (is the question). It looks OK, but the way it feels is the problem."

Our View:It is very unlikely Gates will miss the first six weeks, but we wouldn't be surprised at all if he isn't that effective in the early going.
August 12, 2008
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates ran routes and caught passes on the sidelines before team practices on Tuesday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Although he is progressing, Gates is still experiencing a lot of discomfort saying, "It's not as comfortable as it looks. I got through it. The pain is tolerable.”

Our View:Gates is on the PUP list and has yet to practice with the team this training camp. Although Gates has made some strides forward, there's still a chance he could miss the start of the season.
August 6, 2008
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates has been present at Chargers training camp, but he hasn't practiced with teammates during drills as he continues to nurse his surgically-repaired foot. However, the team reports he is running and making cuts once or twice a day instead, and while the veteran believes he'll "definitely be ready for the opener" against the Carolina Panthers, Gates suggests he won't return at less than 100 percent, according to NFL.com. "This team is too talented and too dedicated to winning for me to come back and not be ready to contribute," Gates told the Tribune. "I wouldn't shortchange this team. Being out there and playing is one thing, but contributing is another."

Our View:While recent reports have been positive, there's still a chance that he'll miss the start of the season or be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. The latter scenario would force him to miss the first six weeks, or close to half of fantasy football's standard regular season. Owners should watch this a tinge of concern, and it would be wise to carry insurance with a reliable backup option should Gates fail to gain full health in time for Week 1. As always, we'll keep you posted.
July 30, 2008
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates believes he will be ready for the team's first regular season game, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Gates and Jason Witten are the two top tight ends in fantasy football, with a wink to Tony Gonzalez as well. Fantasy owners who drafted him have to be excited with this news.
July 25, 2008
All Pro tight end Antonio Gates has started the season on the Active-Physically-Unable-to-Perform list as he recovers from a toe injury suffered last season, according to Chargers.com.

Our View:This should not be a surprise to anybody, and Gates should be back in a matter of weeks. He is still a top option at tight end in fantasy leagues.
July 21, 2008
Antonio Gates tested his left big toe on Monday and tells the AP that the digit is 65-to-70 percent healed. "Obviously, it's a process," Gates says. "I'm a lot better than I felt a month ago. I can say that. I have no determinant on when and how fast I'll be coming back. But right now, I feel good. It's a little sore, but it's tolerable." The tight end underwent surgery in late February to repair a tear in the plantar plate. He worked out for 45 minutes by running and cutting on Monday.

Our View:Gates' status for Week 1 remains uncertain, and he could even open the season on the PUP list. His fantasy value won't be solidified until later in the preseason.
July 21, 2008
Antonio Gates' status for Week 1 is yet to be determined by the Chargers, according to the North County Times. He is recovering from off-season toe surgery.

Our View:It is too early to begin worrying about Gates. He could come at a value in earlier fantasy drafts if his uncertain Week 1 status scares away other owners.
June 2, 2008
Antonio Gates has yet to begin running, the team's official web site reports. "He's exercising and working it pretty good," head coach Norv Turner explains. "He's making great progress. I don't think they want him running yet." Gates is coming off surgery to repair a dislocated and sprained big left toe and was slated to begin running by the end of May.

Our View:It's too soon to begin worrying significantly about Gates' status. He is still expected to be ready for Week 1, but Gates could be limited throughout camp and the preseason.
May 5, 2008
Antonio Gates, who is recovering from toe surgery (in February), will begin running later this month, according to CBSsports. His recovery was expected to take 4-6 months, so it is unlikely he will be ready for training camp in late July.

Our View:He expects to be ready for the season opener against Carolina on September 7, and is already the best TE in the league, so missing training camp won't hurt him, other than from a conditioning standpoint.
May 2, 2008
All world tight end Antonio Gates will not participate in the San Diego Chargers weekend minicamp, according to Chargers.com. Gates will attend the festivities, but continues to recover from the toe surgery he had in February.

Our View:The recovery time for the surgery is between four to six months meaning Gates could return sometime between June and August, depending on how well his foot responds to rehabilitation.
April 14, 2008
Antonio Gates, who underwent foot surgery on his big toe, is expected to be ready to participate in training camp, according to the SD Union-Tribune. General Manager A.J. Smith said. "He is supposed to be ready (for camp). There is no question he is going to be fine. It's the timetable." Coach Turner also expects him to be ready.

Our View:He should remain the top fantasy stud at the position heading into the 2008 season, assuming all goes well in camp for him.
February 23, 2008
Antonio Gates will undergo foot surgery to repair damage suffered late in the regular season, according to ESPN.com. The Pro Bowl tight end will reportedly need four-to-six months of recovery time which puts his offseason conditioning programs and mini-camp participation in jeopardy. "It may be the beginning of training camp and it may be the middle of the season," Antonio Gates said. Gates played through the injury during the Chargers playoff run and it's hard to believe he wouldn't be ready for the beginning of the 2008 regular season.
January 18, 2008
Antonio Gates missed Friday's practice due to his sore toe and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game at New England. Gates was able to play through the doubtful tag and dress at Indianapolis last week, but nonetheless there's a viable chance he won't be able to go here.
January 14, 2008
Amazingly, Antonio Gates was able to suit up and play Sunday, despite dislocating his left big toe just a week earlier. He'll see a toe specialist today to help determine whether he'll be able to suit up to face the Pats this weekend, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "The way I feel today, I don't know," Gates said. "I'm putting weight on it, running, cutting. The only thing is, I'm not supposed to be doing it. It is a dislocated toe." He was mostly used as a decoy, catching just two passes for 28 yards, and clearly wasn't anywhere near full speed. Even if he can face the Pats, you should expect him to remain very limited.
January 13, 2008
Antonio Gates was listed as doubtful for today's game due to a dislocated toe. However, he tested it out before the contest and is expected to "give it a go," according to ESPN's John Clayton. He's likely facing surgery on the digit following the season, regardless. So Gates figures he'll see what he can do in game action. Playing is one thing, performing well is another, making him a risky fantasy play today.
January 11, 2008
Antonio Gates missed practice again on Friday and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's AFC divisional playoff game against the Colts because of a dislocated toe, according to the AP. Gates said Thursday that he would be game-time decision.
January 11, 2008
Antonio Gates (toe) is still hoping to try and play on Sunday against the Colts. “I'm trying to do everything I can,” he tells the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Right now, it's still a game-time decision. It's pretty sore. It felt good Tuesday, but it doesn't feel as good today. It's a tricky situation, really it is." Gates may need surgery to help repair his dislocated left big toe.
January 9, 2008
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates has been downgraded to doubtful according to ESPN’s Jon Clayton. Clayton has reported that Gates’ toe is dislocated rather than sprained, and that the Chargers will most likely be without him until at least the week of the Super Bowl, if they are to advance that far.
January 8, 2008
Antonio Gates may not be able to play this Sunday against the Colts because of a sprained and dislocated left big toe. "I don't know how long it's going to be," general manager A.J. Smith tells the San Diego Union-Tribune.
January 7, 2008
Antonio Gates sprained his left big toe during Sunday's win over the Titans. When asked if he'd be available to face the Colts this weekend, Gates said, "I won't know until later this week," according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. You can expect him to do his best to get out on the field, but it's unlikely he'll be near full speed if he does play.
January 6, 2008
Antonio Gates was carted off the field left in the second quarter of Sunday's Wild Card game with a toe injury. His return is questionable.
