The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that they have terminated the contract of wide receiver Doug Gabriel, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:Gabriel, who had signed with the Bengals earlier in the offseason, is a journeyman type player who just can’t seem to latch on with a team.

Doug Gabriel reportedly has a great shot of making the Bengals' roster this season, according to the Dayton Daily News. He has looked very impressive during workouts.

Our View:Gabriel racked up 30 catches for 428 yards and three scores with Oakland in 2007, and should provide Carson Palmer with another favorable weapon, and could help ease the void in the receiving corps beyond studs Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh following the departure of Chris Henry. Gabriel could battle Antonio Chatman (who excels on special teams), and rookie Andre Caldwell for the slot role as the number three receiver.

In a move that may signal concerns for the WR position, the Cincinnati Bengals have signed free-agent WR Doug Gabriel to a one-year deal, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Terms of the deal were undisclosed. Gabriel was one of very few free agents left for hiring, and while his addition fails to address the loss of Chris Henry, it adds another option to enter training camp and compete for a job. With Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh both missing offseason workouts, it's fair to say the Bengals would be wise to consider options. The WR position has long been a strength and the arm of QB Carson Palmer is the engine that makes this team move. Without targets, it could be a troublesome season.

Doug Gabriel is likely to be active for the Raiders on Sunday in his return to the team. According to the Contra Costa Times, head coach Art Shell said "He'll be a guy that can come in and run the offense if needed. I'm sure (receivers coach) Fred (Biletnikoff) will end up using him some in the game Sunday."
